2019-01-29drm/i915: Replace global breadcrumbs with per-context interrupt trackingChris Wilson1-470/+0
A few years ago, see commit 688e6c725816 ("drm/i915: Slaughter the thundering i915_wait_request herd"), the issue of handling multiple clients waiting in parallel was brought to our attention. The requirement was that every client should be woken immediately upon its request being signaled, without incurring any cpu overhead. To handle certain fragility of our hw meant that we could not do a simple check inside the irq handler (some generations required almost unbounded delays before we could be sure of seqno coherency) and so request completion checking required delegation. Before commit 688e6c725816, the solution was simple. Every client waiting on a request would be woken on every interrupt and each would do a heavyweight check to see if their request was complete. Commit 688e6c725816 introduced an rbtree so that only the earliest waiter on the global timeline would woken, and would wake the next and so on. (Along with various complications to handle requests being reordered along the global timeline, and also a requirement for kthread to provide a delegate for fence signaling that had no process context.) The global rbtree depends on knowing the execution timeline (and global seqno). Without knowing that order, we must instead check all contexts queued to the HW to see which may have advanced. We trim that list by only checking queued contexts that are being waited on, but still we keep a list of all active contexts and their active signalers that we inspect from inside the irq handler. By moving the waiters onto the fence signal list, we can combine the client wakeup with the dma_fence signaling (a dramatic reduction in complexity, but does require the HW being coherent, the seqno must be visible from the cpu before the interrupt is raised - we keep a timer backup just in case). Having previously fixed all the issues with irq-seqno serialisation (by inserting delays onto the GPU after each request instead of random delays on the CPU after each interrupt), we can rely on the seqno state to perfom direct wakeups from the interrupt handler. This allows us to preserve our single context switch behaviour of the current routine, with the only downside that we lose the RT priority sorting of wakeups. In general, direct wakeup latency of multiple clients is about the same (about 10% better in most cases) with a reduction in total CPU time spent in the waiter (about 20-50% depending on gen). Average herd behaviour is improved, but at the cost of not delegating wakeups on task_prio. v2: Capture fence signaling state for error state and add comments to warm even the most cold of hearts. v3: Check if the request is still active before busywaiting v4: Reduce the amount of pointer misdirection with list_for_each_safe and using a local i915_request variable inside the loops v5: Add a missing pluralisation to a purely informative selftest message. 2018-05-02drm/i915/selftests: Fix error checking for wait_var_timeoutChris Wilson1-2/+3
The old wait_on_atomic_t used a custom callback to perform the schedule(), which used my return semantics of reporting an error code on timeout. wait_var_event_timeout() uses the schedule() return semantics of reporting the remaining jiffies (1 if it timed out with 0 jiffies remaining!) and 0 on failure. This semantic mismatch lead to us falsely claiming a time out occurred. Make wait_on_atomic_t() pass the TASK_* mode onto its action function as an extra argument and make it 'unsigned int throughout. Also, consolidate a bunch of identical action functions into a default function that can do the appropriate thing for the mode. Also, change the argument name in the bit_wait*() function declarations to reflect the fact that it's the mode and not the bit number. 2017-09-13mm: treewide: remove GFP_TEMPORARY allocation flagMichal Hocko1-5/+5
GFP_TEMPORARY was introduced by commit e12ba74d8ff3 ("Group short-lived and reclaimable kernel allocations") along with __GFP_RECLAIMABLE. It's primary motivation was to allow users to tell that an allocation is short lived and so the allocator can try to place such allocations close together and prevent long term fragmentation. As much as this sounds like a reasonable semantic it becomes much less clear when to use the highlevel GFP_TEMPORARY allocation flag. How long is temporary? Can the context holding that memory sleep? Can it take locks? It seems there is no good answer for those questions. The current implementation of GFP_TEMPORARY is basically GFP_KERNEL | __GFP_RECLAIMABLE which in itself is tricky because basically none of the existing caller provide a way to reclaim the allocated memory. So this is rather misleading and hard to evaluate for any benefits. I have checked some random users and none of them has added the flag with a specific justification. I suspect most of them just copied from other existing users and others just thought it might be a good idea to use without any measuring. This suggests that GFP_TEMPORARY just motivates for cargo cult usage without any reasoning. I believe that our gfp flags are quite complex already and especially those with highlevel semantic should be clearly defined to prevent from confusion and abuse. Therefore I propose dropping GFP_TEMPORARY and replace all existing users to simply use GFP_KERNEL. Please note that SLAB users with shrinkers will still get __GFP_RECLAIMABLE heuristic and so they will be placed properly for memory fragmentation prevention. I can see reasons we might want some gfp flag to reflect shorterm allocations but I propose starting from a clear semantic definition and only then add users with proper justification. This was been brought up before LSF this year by Matthew [1] and it turned out that GFP_TEMPORARY really doesn't have a clear semantic. It seems to be a heuristic without any measured advantage for most (if not all) its current users. The follow up discussion has revealed that opinions on what might be temporary allocation differ a lot between developers. So rather than trying to tweak existing users into a semantic which they haven't expected I propose to simply remove the flag and start from scratch if we really need a semantic for short term allocations. 2017-02-23drm/i915: Protect the request->global_seqno with the engine->timeline lockChris Wilson1-3/+3
A request is assigned a global seqno only when it is on the hardware execution queue. The global seqno can be used to maintain a list of requests on the same engine in retirement order, for example for constructing a priority queue for waiting. Prior to its execution, or if it is subsequently removed in the event of preemption, its global seqno is zero. As both insertion and removal from the execution queue may operate in IRQ context, it is not guarded by the usual struct_mutex BKL. Instead those relying on the global seqno must be prepared for its value to change between reads. Only when the request is complete can the global seqno be stable (due to the memory barriers on submitting the commands to the hardware to write the breadcrumb, if the HWS shows that it has passed the global seqno and the global seqno is unchanged after the read, it is indeed complete).
