2022-10-28drm: bridge: adv7511: use dev_err_probe in probe functionAhmad Fatoum2-16/+10
adv7511 probe may need to be attempted multiple times before no -EPROBE_DEFER is returned. Currently, every such probe results in an error message: [ 4.534229] adv7511 1-003d: failed to find dsi host [ 4.580288] adv7511 1-003d: failed to find dsi host This is misleading, as there is no error and probe deferral is normal behavior. Fix this by using dev_err_probe that will suppress -EPROBE_DEFER errors. While at it, we touch all dev_err in the probe path. This makes the code more concise and included the error code everywhere to aid user in debugging. adv7533 bridge tries to dynamically switch lanes based on the mode by detaching and attaching the mipi dsi device. This approach is incorrect because this method of dynamic switch of detaching and attaching the mipi dsi device also results in removing and adding the component which is not necessary. This approach is also prone to deadlocks. 2022-08-16i2c: Make remove callback return voidUwe Kleine-König1-3/+1
The value returned by an i2c driver's remove function is mostly ignored. (Only an error message is printed if the value is non-zero that the error is ignored.) So change the prototype of the remove function to return no value. This way driver authors are not tempted to assume that passing an error to the upper layer is a good idea. All drivers are adapted accordingly. There is no intended change of behaviour, all callbacks were prepared to return 0 before. The ADV7511_REG_CEC_CTRL = 0xE2 register is part of the main register map - not the CEC register map. As such, we shouldn't apply an offset to the register address. Doing so will cause us to address a bogus register for chips with a CEC register map offset (e.g. ADV7533). 2022-06-10drm: adv7511: override i2c address of cec before accessing itAntonio Borneo1-3/+4
Commit 680532c50bca ("drm: adv7511: Add support for i2c_new_secondary_device") allows a device tree node to override the default addresses of the secondary i2c devices. This is useful for solving address conflicts on the i2c bus. In adv7511_init_cec_regmap() the new i2c address of cec device is read from device tree and immediately accessed, well before it is written in the proper register to override the default address. This can cause an i2c error during probe and a consequent probe failure. Once the new i2c address is read from the device tree, override the default address before any attempt to access the cec. Tested with adv7533 and stm32mp157f. 2022-05-02drm: bridge: adv7511: use non-legacy mode for CEC RXAlvin Šipraga3-32/+106
The ADV7511 family of bridges supports two modes for CEC RX: legacy and non-legacy mode. The only difference is whether the chip uses a single CEC RX buffer, or uses all three available RX buffers. Currently the adv7511 driver uses legacy mode. While debugging a stall in CEC RX on an ADV7535, we reached out to Analog Devices, who suggested to use non-legacy mode instead. According to the programming guide for the ADV7511 [1], and the register control manual of the ADV7535 [2], this is the default behaviour on reset. As previously stated, the adv7511 driver currently overrides this to legacy mode. This patch updates the adv7511 driver to instead use non-legacy mode with all three CEC RX buffers. As a result of this change, we no longer experience any stalling of CEC RX with the ADV7535. It is not known why non-legacy mode solves this particular issue, but besides this, no functional change is to be expected by this patch. Please note that this has only been tested on an ADV7535. What follows is a brief description of the non-legacy mode interrupt handling behaviour. The programming guide in [1] gives a more detailed explanation. With three RX buffers, the interrupt handler checks the CEC_RX_STATUS register (renamed from CEC_RX_ENABLE in this patch), which contains 2-bit psuedo-timestamps for each of the RX buffers. The RX timestamps for each buffer represent the time of arrival for the CEC frame held in a given buffer, with lower timestamp values indicating chronologically older frames. A special value of 0 indicates that the given RX buffer is inactive and should be skipped. The interrupt handler parses these timestamps and then reads the active RX buffers in the prescribed order using the same logic as before. Changes have been made to ensure that the correct RX buffer is cleared after processing. This clearing procesure also sets the timestamp of the given RX buffer to 0 to mark it as inactive. Like the ADV7533, the ADV7535 has an offset for the CEC register map, and it is the same value (ADV7533_REG_CEC_OFFSET = 0x70). Rather than testing for numerous chip types in the offset calculations throughout the driver, just compute it during driver probe and put it in the private adv7511 data structure. Connector detection using poll method won't work in case of bridge attached to the encoder with the flag DRM_BRIDGE_ATTACH_NO_CONNECTOR, as the code defaults to HPD. Enable DRM_BRIDGE_OP_HPD based on HPD interrupt availability, so that it will fall back to polling, if HPD is not available. Implement the bridge connector-related .get_edid(), .detect() and .hpd_notify() operations, and report the related bridge capabilities. Output status detection is implemented using the same backend as for the DRM connector, but requires making mode retrieval at detection time optional as no pointer to the connector is available to the bridge .detect() operation. The reason for the need to retrieve modes at detection time is unclear to me, and this may benefit from further refactoring of hot plug handling code. Hot plug detection is notified through the bridge HPD notification framework when the bridge is used without creating a connector, and falls back to the existing implementation otherwise. CEC handling of disconnection is handled in the new .hpd_notify() operation in the new code path. 2020-02-26drm/bridge: Extend bridge API to disable connector creationLaurent Pinchart1-1/+7
Most bridge drivers create a DRM connector to model the connector at the output of the bridge. This model is historical and has worked pretty well so far, but causes several issues: - It prevents supporting more complex display pipelines where DRM connector operations are split over multiple components. For instance a pipeline with a bridge connected to the DDC signals to read EDID data, and another one connected to the HPD signal to detect connection and disconnection, will not be possible to support through this model. - It requires every bridge driver to implement similar connector handling code, resulting in code duplication. - It assumes that a bridge will either be wired to a connector or to another bridge, but doesn't support bridges that can be used in both positions very well (although there is some ad-hoc support for this in the analogix_dp bridge driver). In order to solve these issues, ownership of the connector should be moved to the display controller driver (where it can be implemented using helpers provided by the core). Extend the bridge API to allow disabling connector creation in bridge drivers as a first step towards the new model. The new flags argument to the bridge .attach() operation allows instructing the bridge driver to skip creating a connector. Unconditionally set the new flags argument to 0 for now to keep the existing behaviour, and modify all existing bridge drivers to return an error when connector creation is not requested as they don't support this feature yet. This reverts commit 83f35bc3a852f1c3892c7474998c5cec707c7ba3. There are at least two DSI controller drivers which relies on the old behaviour of adv7511 driver. To avoid platform breakage this patch should be reverted. This is a temporary solution, as it blocks adv7511 usage with other platforms. Assumption that DSI device driver (bridge/panel) should first expose drm_bridge/drm_panel object, then look for DSI bus is just incorrect - it can work with devices controlled via i2c but it cannot work with devices controlled via DSI - they will not be able to probe. To solve the issue following steps should be performed: - rework reverted patch allowing co-operation with broken DSI controller drivers - with simple/ugly workaround, - fix controller drivers and then remove workaround. 2019-07-01drm/bridge: adv7511: Attach to DSI host at probe timeMatt Redfearn1-3/+9
In contrast to all of the DSI panel drivers in drivers/gpu/drm/panel which attach to the DSI host via mipi_dsi_attach() at probe time, the ADV7533 bridge device does not. Instead it defers this to the point that the upstream device connects to its bridge via drm_bridge_attach(). The generic Synopsys MIPI DSI host driver does not register it's own drm_bridge until the MIPI DSI has attached. But it does not call drm_bridge_attach() on the downstream device until the upstream device has attached. This leads to a chicken and the egg failure and the DRM pipeline does not complete. Since all other mipi_dsi_device drivers call mipi_dsi_attach() in probe(), make the adv7533 mipi_dsi_device do the same. This ensures that the Synopsys MIPI DSI host registers it's bridge such that it is available for the upstream device to connect to. 2019-05-13drm/bridge: adv7511: Fix low refresh rate selectionMatt Redfearn1-3/+3
The driver currently sets register 0xfb (Low Refresh Rate) based on the value of mode->vrefresh. Firstly, this field is specified to be in Hz, but the magic numbers used by the code are Hz * 1000. This essentially leads to the low refresh rate always being set to 0x01, since the vrefresh value will always be less than 24000. Fix the magic numbers to be in Hz. Secondly, according to the comment in drm_modes.h, the field is not supposed to be used in a functional way anyway. Instead, use the helper function drm_mode_vrefresh(). 2019-01-24drm: Split out drm_probe_helper.hDaniel Vetter2-1/+4
Having the probe helper stuff (which pretty much everyone needs) in the drm_crtc_helper.h file (which atomic drivers should never need) is confusing. Split them out. To make sure I actually achieved the goal here I went through all drivers. And indeed, all atomic drivers are now free of drm_crtc_helper.h includes. v2: Make it compile. There was so much compile fail on arm drivers that I figured I'll better not include any of the acks on v1. v3: Massive rebase because i915 has lost a lot of drmP.h includes, but not all: Through drm_crtc_helper.h > drm_modeset_helper.h -> drmP.h there was still one, which this patch largely removes. Which means rolling out lots more includes all over. This will also conflict with ongoing drmP.h cleanup by others I expect. v3: Rebase on top of atomic bochs. v4: Review from Laurent for bridge/rcar/omap/shmob/core bits: - (re)move some of the added includes, use the better include files in other places (all suggested from Laurent adopted unchanged). - sort alphabetically v5: Actually try to sort them, and while at it, sort all the ones I touch. v6: Rebase onto i915 changes. v7: Rebase once more.
