2022-09-02x86/defconfig: Enable CONFIG_DEBUG_WX=yIngo Molnar2-0/+2
7 years after it got introduced it's time to make this the default, at least in the x86 defconfigs. Signed-off-by: Ingo Molnar <mingo@kernel.org>
2022-09-02x86/defconfig: Refresh the defconfigsIngo Molnar2-4/+5
Just go through a 'make savedefconfig' cycle to pick up fresh Kconfig details, no change in settings, just reordering of some entries. ( This makes followup changes generated via 'make savedefconfig' contain less noise. ) Signed-off-by: Ingo Molnar <mingo@kernel.org>

Commit c70727a5bc18 ("xen: allow more than 512 GB of RAM for 64 bit pv-domains") from July 2015 replaces the config XEN_MAX_DOMAIN_MEMORY with a new config XEN_512GB, but misses to adjust arch/x86/configs/xen.config. As XEN_512GB defaults to yes, there is no need to explicitly set any config in xen.config. Just remove setting the obsolete config XEN_MAX_DOMAIN_MEMORY. 2022-06-24efi: vars: Remove deprecated 'efivars' sysfs interfaceArd Biesheuvel2-2/+0
Commit 5d9db883761a ("efi: Add support for a UEFI variable filesystem") dated Oct 5, 2012, introduced a new efivarfs pseudo-filesystem to replace the efivars sysfs interface that was used up to that point to expose EFI variables to user space. The main problem with the sysfs interface was that it only supported up to 1024 bytes of payload per file, whereas the underlying variables themselves are only bounded by a platform specific per-variable and global limit that is typically much higher than 1024 bytes. The deprecated sysfs interface is only enabled on x86 and Itanium, other EFI enabled architectures only support the efivarfs pseudo-filesystem. So let's finally rip off the band aid, and drop the old interface entirely. This will make it easier to refactor and clean up the underlying infrastructure that is shared between efivars, efivarfs and efi-pstore, and is long overdue for a makeover. 2022-03-24x86/defconfig: Enable WERRORBorislav Petkov2-0/+2
To quote Linus: "EVERYBODY should have CONFIG_WERROR=y on at least x86-64 and other serious architectures, unless you have some completely random experimental (and broken) compiler. New compiler warnings are not acceptable." So this should make at least the most obvious and common ones not go unnoticed. 2022-01-08x86/kbuild: Enable CONFIG_KALLSYMS_ALL=y in the defconfigsIngo Molnar2-0/+2
Most distro kernels have this option enabled, to improve debug output. Lockdep also selects it. 2021-12-30x86/defconfig: Enable CONFIG_LOCALVERSION_AUTO=y in the defconfigIngo Molnar2-2/+0
With CONFIG_LOCALVERSION_AUTO=y enabled, 'uname' provides much more useful output on debug kernels: Before: # CONFIG_LOCALVERSION_AUTO is not set $ uname -a Linux localhost 5.16.0-rc7+ #4563 SMP PREEMPT Thu Dec 30 08:28:38 CET 2021 x86_64 GNU/Linux After: # CONFIG_LOCALVERSION_AUTO=y $ uname -a Linux localhost 5.16.0-rc7-02294-g5537f9709b16 #4562 SMP PREEMPT Thu Dec 30 08:27:17 CET 2021 x86_64 GNU/Linux This is particularly valuable during bisection, if we want to double check the exact kernel version we are testing. 2020-09-14vgacon: remove software scrollback supportLinus Torvalds2-2/+0
Yunhai Zhang recently fixed a VGA software scrollback bug in commit ebfdfeeae8c0 ("vgacon: Fix for missing check in scrollback handling"), but that then made people look more closely at some of this code, and there were more problems on the vgacon side, but also the fbcon software scrollback. We don't really have anybody who maintains this code - probably because nobody actually _uses_ it any more. Sure, people still use both VGA and the framebuffer consoles, but they are no longer the main user interfaces to the kernel, and haven't been for decades, so these kinds of extra features end up bitrotting and not really being used. So rather than try to maintain a likely unused set of code, I'll just aggressively remove it, and see if anybody even notices. Maybe there are people who haven't jumped on the whole GUI badnwagon yet, and think it's just a fad. And maybe those people use the scrollback code. If that turns out to be the case, we can resurrect this again, once we've found the sucker^Wmaintainer for it who actually uses it. These patches were shared with the KVM tree and are already merged through that tree. - generic DT-binding support for the ARM-SMMU driver. With this the driver now makes use of the generic DMA-API code. This also required some changes outside of the IOMMU code, but these are acked by the respective maintainers. - more cleanups and fixes all over the place. * tag 'iommu-updates-v4.9' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/joro/iommu: (40 commits) iommu/amd: No need to wait iommu completion if no dte irq entry change iommu/amd: Free domain id when free a domain of struct dma_ops_domain iommu/amd: Use standard bitmap operation to set bitmap iommu/amd: Clean up the cmpxchg64 invocation iommu/io-pgtable-arm: Check for v7s-incapable systems iommu/dma: Avoid PCI host bridge windows iommu/dma: Add support for mapping MSIs iommu/arm-smmu: Set domain geometry iommu/arm-smmu: Wire up generic configuration support Docs: dt: document ARM SMMU generic binding usage iommu/arm-smmu: Convert to iommu_fwspec iommu/arm-smmu: Intelligent SMR allocation iommu/arm-smmu: Add a stream map entry iterator iommu/arm-smmu: Streamline SMMU data lookups iommu/arm-smmu: Refactor mmu-masters handling iommu/arm-smmu: Keep track of S2CR state iommu/arm-smmu: Consolidate stream map entry state iommu/arm-smmu: Handle stream IDs more dynamically iommu/arm-smmu: Set PRIVCFG in stage 1 STEs iommu/arm-smmu: Support non-PCI devices with SMMUv3 ...

2016-09-01kconfig: tinyconfig: provide whole choice blocks to avoid warningsArnd Bergmann1-0/+2
Using "make tinyconfig" produces a couple of annoying warnings that show up for build test machines all the time: .config:966:warning: override: NOHIGHMEM changes choice state .config:965:warning: override: SLOB changes choice state .config:963:warning: override: KERNEL_XZ changes choice state .config:962:warning: override: CC_OPTIMIZE_FOR_SIZE changes choice state .config:933:warning: override: SLOB changes choice state .config:930:warning: override: CC_OPTIMIZE_FOR_SIZE changes choice state .config:870:warning: override: SLOB changes choice state .config:868:warning: override: KERNEL_XZ changes choice state .config:867:warning: override: CC_OPTIMIZE_FOR_SIZE changes choice state I've made a previous attempt at fixing them and we discussed a number of alternatives. I tried changing the Makefile to use "merge_config.sh -n $(fragment-list)" but couldn't get that to work properly. This is yet another approach, based on the observation that we do want to see a warning for conflicting 'choice' options, and that we can simply make them non-conflicting by listing all other options as disabled. This is a trivial patch that we can apply independent of plans for other changes.
