2017-05-01avr32: remove support for AVR32 architectureHans-Christian Noren Egtvedt80-6148/+0
This patch drops support for AVR32 architecture from the Linux kernel. The AVR32 architecture is not keeping up with the development of the kernel, and since it shares so much of the drivers with Atmel ARM SoC, it is starting to hinder these drivers to develop swiftly. Also, all AVR32 AP7 SoC processors are end of lifed from Atmel (now Microchip). Finally, the GCC toolchain is stuck at version 4.2.x, and has not received any patches since the last release from Atmel; 4.2.4-atmel.1.1.3.avr32linux.1. When building kernel v4.10, this toolchain is no longer able to properly link the network stack. Haavard and I have came to the conclusion that we feel keeping AVR32 on life support offers more obstacles for Atmel ARMs, than it gives joy to AVR32 users. I also suspect there are very few AVR32 users left today, if anybody at all. 2017-03-09arch, mm: convert all architectures to use 5level-fixup.hKirill A. Shutemov1-0/+1
If an architecture uses 4level-fixup.h we don't need to do anything as it includes 5level-fixup.h. If an architecture uses pgtable-nop*d.h, define __ARCH_USE_5LEVEL_HACK before inclusion of the header. It makes asm-generic code to use 5level-fixup.h. If an architecture has 4-level paging or folds levels on its own, include 5level-fixup.h directly. Signed-off-by: Kirill A. 2017-02-27kprobes: move kprobe declarations to asm-generic/kprobes.hLuis R. Rodriguez1-1/+6
Often all is needed is these small helpers, instead of compiler.h or a full kprobes.h. This is important for asm helpers, in fact even some asm/kprobes.h make use of these helpers... instead just keep a generic asm file with helpers useful for asm code with the least amount of clutter as possible. Likewise we need now to also address what to do about this file for both when architectures have CONFIG_HAVE_KPROBES, and when they do not. Then for when architectures have CONFIG_HAVE_KPROBES but have disabled CONFIG_KPROBES. Right now most asm/kprobes.h do not have guards against CONFIG_KPROBES, this means most architecture code cannot include asm/kprobes.h safely. Correct this and add guards for architectures missing them. Additionally provide architectures that not have kprobes support with the default asm-generic solution. This lets us force asm/kprobes.h on the header include/linux/kprobes.h always, but most importantly we can now safely include just asm/kprobes.h on architecture code without bringing the full kitchen sink of header files. Two architectures already provided a guard against CONFIG_KPROBES on its kprobes.h: sh, arch. The rest of the architectures needed gaurds added. We avoid including any not-needed headers on asm/kprobes.h unless kprobes have been enabled. In a subsequent atomic change we can try now to remove compiler.h from include/linux/kprobes.h. During this sweep I've also identified a few architectures defining a common macro needed for both kprobes and ftrace, that of the definition of the breakput instruction up. Some refer to this as BREAKPOINT_INSTRUCTION. This must be kept outside of the #ifdef CONFIG_KPROBES guard. 2017-02-01sched/cputime: Remove generic asm headersFrederic Weisbecker1-1/+0
cputime_t is now only used by two architectures: * powerpc (when CONFIG_VIRT_CPU_ACCOUNTING_NATIVE=y) * s390 And since the core doesn't use it anymore, we don't need any arch support from the others. So we can remove their stub implementations. A final cleanup would be to provide an efficient pure arch implementation of cputime_to_nsec() for s390 and powerpc and finally remove include/linux/cputime.h . 2016-11-16locking/core: Introduce cpu_relax_yield()Christian Borntraeger1-0/+1
For spinning loops people do often use barrier() or cpu_relax(). For most architectures cpu_relax and barrier are the same, but on some architectures cpu_relax can add some latency. For example on power,sparc64 and arc, cpu_relax can shift the CPU towards other hardware threads in an SMT environment. On s390 cpu_relax does even more, it uses an hypercall to the hypervisor to give up the timeslice. In contrast to the SMT yielding this can result in larger latencies. In some places this latency is unwanted, so another variant "cpu_relax_lowlatency" was introduced. Before this is used in more and more places, lets revert the logic and provide a cpu_relax_yield that can be called in places where yielding is more important than latency. By default this is the same as cpu_relax on all architectures. 2016-06-24tree wide: get rid of __GFP_REPEAT for order-0 allocations part IMichal Hocko1-3/+3
This is the third version of the patchset previously sent [1]. I have basically only rebased it on top of 4.7-rc1 tree and dropped "dm: get rid of superfluous gfp flags" which went through dm tree. I am sending it now because it is tree wide and chances for conflicts are reduced considerably when we want to target rc2. I plan to send the next step and rename the flag and move to a better semantic later during this release cycle so we will have a new semantic ready for 4.8 merge window hopefully. Motivation: While working on something unrelated I've checked the current usage of __GFP_REPEAT in the tree. It seems that a majority of the usage is and always has been bogus because __GFP_REPEAT has always been about costly high order allocations while we are using it for order-0 or very small orders very often. It seems that a big pile of them is just a copy&paste when a code has been adopted from one arch to another. I think it makes some sense to get rid of them because they are just making the semantic more unclear. Please note that GFP_REPEAT is documented as * __GFP_REPEAT: Try hard to allocate the memory, but the allocation attempt * _might_ fail. This depends upon the particular VM implementation. while !costly requests have basically nofail semantic. So one could reasonably expect that order-0 request with __GFP_REPEAT will not loop for ever. This is not implemented right now though. I would like to move on with __GFP_REPEAT and define a better semantic for it. $ git grep __GFP_REPEAT origin/master | wc -l 111 $ git grep __GFP_REPEAT | wc -l 36 So we are down to the third after this patch series. The remaining places really seem to be relying on __GFP_REPEAT due to large allocation requests. This still needs some double checking which I will do later after all the simple ones are sorted out. I am touching a lot of arch specific code here and I hope I got it right but as a matter of fact I even didn't compile test for some archs as I do not have cross compiler for them. Patches should be quite trivial to review for stupid compile mistakes though. The tricky parts are usually hidden by macro definitions and thats where I would appreciate help from arch maintainers. [1] http://lkml.kernel.org/r/1461849846-27209-1-git-send-email-mhocko@kernel.org This patch (of 19): __GFP_REPEAT has a rather weak semantic but since it has been introduced around 2.6.12 it has been ignored for low order allocations. Yet we have the full kernel tree with its usage for apparently order-0 allocations. This is really confusing because __GFP_REPEAT is explicitly documented to allow allocation failures which is a weaker semantic than the current order-0 has (basically nofail). Let's simply drop __GFP_REPEAT from those places. This would allow to identify place which really need allocator to retry harder and formulate a more specific semantic for what the flag is supposed to do actually. 2016-03-14avr32: fix asm operand constraint in cmpxchg()Mans Rullgard1-1/+1
If the 'old' operand to cmpxchg() is a constant wider than 21 bits, linking fails with a "relocation truncated to fit: R_AVR32_21S" error. Fix this by replacing the "i" constraint with "Ks21" which makes the compiler use a temporary register for out of range constants. 2016-03-14avr32: wire up copy_file_range syscallHans-Christian Egtvedt1-0/+1
This patch wires up the new copy_file_range syscall on AVR32. On AVR32, all parameters beyond the 5th are passed on the stack. System calls don't use the stack -- they borrow a callee-saved register instead. This means that syscalls that take 6 parameters must be called through a stub that pushes the last parameter on the stack. Signed-off-by: Hans-Christian Noren Egtvedt <egtvedt@samfundet.no>
2016-03-13ipv4: Update parameters for csum_tcpudp_magic to their original typesAlexander Duyck1-6/+4
This patch updates all instances of csum_tcpudp_magic and csum_tcpudp_nofold to reflect the types that are usually used as the source inputs. For example the protocol field is populated based on nexthdr which is actually an unsigned 8 bit value. The length is usually populated based on skb->len which is an unsigned integer. This addresses an issue in which the IPv6 function csum_ipv6_magic was generating a checksum using the full 32b of skb->len while csum_tcpudp_magic was only using the lower 16 bits. As a result we could run into issues when attempting to adjust the checksum as there was no protocol agnostic way to update it. With this change the value is still truncated as many architectures use "(len + proto) << 8", however this truncation only occurs for values greater than 16776960 in length and as such is unlikely to occur as we stop the inner headers at ~64K in size. I did have to make a few minor changes in the arm, mn10300, nios2, and score versions of the function in order to support these changes as they were either using things such as an OR to combine the protocol and length, or were using ntohs to convert the length which would have truncated the value. I also updated a few spots in terms of whitespace and type differences for the addresses. Most of this was just to make sure all of the definitions were in sync going forward. 2016-02-25net: Facility to report route quality of connected socketsTom Herbert1-0/+2
This patch add the SO_CNX_ADVICE socket option (setsockopt only). The purpose is to allow an application to give feedback to the kernel about the quality of the network path for a connected socket. The value argument indicates the type of quality report. For this initial patch the only supported advice is a value of 1 which indicates "bad path, please reroute"-- the action taken by the kernel is to call dst_negative_advice which will attempt to choose a different ECMP route, reset the TX hash for flow label and UDP source port in encapsulation, etc. This facility should be useful for connected UDP sockets where only the application can provide any feedback about path quality. It could also be useful for TCP applications that have additional knowledge about the path outside of the normal TCP control loop. 2015-10-04Merge branch 'strscpy' of ↵Linus Torvalds1-0/+1
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/cmetcalf/linux-tile Pull strscpy string copy function implementation from Chris Metcalf. Chris sent this during the merge window, but I waffled back and forth on the pull request, which is why it's going in only now. The new "strscpy()" function is definitely easier to use and more secure than either strncpy() or strlcpy(), both of which are horrible nasty interfaces that have serious and irredeemable problems. strncpy() has a useless return value, and doesn't NUL-terminate an overlong result. To make matters worse, it pads a short result with zeroes, which is a performance disaster if you have big buffers. strlcpy(), by contrast, is a mis-designed "fix" for strlcpy(), lacking the insane NUL padding, but having a differently broken return value which returns the original length of the source string. Which means that it will read characters past the count from the source buffer, and you have to trust the source to be properly terminated. It also makes error handling fragile, since the test for overflow is unnecessarily subtle. strscpy() avoids both these problems, guaranteeing the NUL termination (but not excessive padding) if the destination size wasn't zero, and making the overflow condition very obvious by returning -E2BIG. It also doesn't read past the size of the source, and can thus be used for untrusted source data too. So why did I waffle about this for so long? Every time we introduce a new-and-improved interface, people start doing these interminable series of trivial conversion patches. And every time that happens, somebody does some silly mistake, and the conversion patch to the improved interface actually makes things worse. Because the patch is mindnumbing and trivial, nobody has the attention span to look at it carefully, and it's usually done over large swatches of source code which means that not every conversion gets tested. So I'm pulling the strscpy() support because it *is* a better interface. But I will refuse to pull mindless conversion patches. Use this in places where it makes sense, but don't do trivial patches to fix things that aren't actually known to be broken. * 'strscpy' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/cmetcalf/linux-tile: tile: use global strscpy() rather than private copy string: provide strscpy() Make asm/word-at-a-time.h available on all architectures

Now every architecture supports the primitives consistently (by Peter Zijlstra) - Generic support for 'relaxed atomics': - _acquire/release/relaxed() flavours of xchg(), cmpxchg() and {add,sub}_return() - atomic_read_acquire() - atomic_set_release() This came out of porting qwrlock code to arm64 (by Will Deacon) - Clean up the fragile static_key APIs that were causing repeat bugs, by introducing a new one: DEFINE_STATIC_KEY_TRUE(name); DEFINE_STATIC_KEY_FALSE(name); which define a key of different types with an initial true/false value. Then allow: static_branch_likely() static_branch_unlikely() to take a key of either type and emit the right instruction for the case. To be able to know the 'type' of the static key we encode it in the jump entry (by Peter Zijlstra) - Static key self-tests (by Jason Baron) - qrwlock optimizations (by Waiman Long) - small futex enhancements (by Davidlohr Bueso) - ... and misc other changes" * 'locking-core-for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip: (63 commits) jump_label/x86: Work around asm build bug on older/backported GCCs locking, ARM, atomics: Define our SMP atomics in terms of _relaxed() operations locking, include/llist: Use linux/atomic.h instead of asm/cmpxchg.h locking/qrwlock: Make use of _{acquire|release|relaxed}() atomics locking/qrwlock: Implement queue_write_unlock() using smp_store_release() locking/lockref: Remove homebrew cmpxchg64_relaxed() macro definition locking, asm-generic: Add _{relaxed|acquire|release}() variants for 'atomic_long_t' locking, asm-generic: Rework atomic-long.h to avoid bulk code duplication locking/atomics: Add _{acquire|release|relaxed}() variants of some atomic operations locking, compiler.h: Cast away attributes in the WRITE_ONCE() magic locking/static_keys: Make verify_keys() static jump label, locking/static_keys: Update docs locking/static_keys: Provide a selftest jump_label: Provide a self-test s390/uaccess, locking/static_keys: employ static_branch_likely() x86, tsc, locking/static_keys: Employ static_branch_likely() locking/static_keys: Add selftest locking/static_keys: Add a new static_key interface locking/static_keys: Rework update logic locking/static_keys: Add static_key_{en,dis}able() helpers ...

git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip Pull x86 mm updates from Ingo Molnar: "The dominant change in this cycle was the continued work to isolate kernel drivers from MTRR legacies: this tree gets rid of all kernel internal driver interfaces to MTRRs (mostly by rewriting it to proper PAT interfaces), the only access left is the /proc/mtrr ABI. 2015-08-31Merge branch 'sched-core-for-linus' of ↵Linus Torvalds1-2/+5
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip Pull scheduler updates from Ingo Molnar: "The biggest change in this cycle is the rewrite of the main SMP load balancing metric: the CPU load/utilization. The main goal was to make the metric more precise and more representative - see the changelog of this commit for the gory details: 9d89c257dfb9 ("sched/fair: Rewrite runnable load and utilization average tracking") It is done in a way that significantly reduces complexity of the code: 5 files changed, 249 insertions(+), 494 deletions(-) and the performance testing results are encouraging. Nevertheless we need to keep an eye on potential regressions, since this potentially affects every SMP workload in existence. This work comes from Yuyang Du. Other changes: - SCHED_DL updates. (Andrea Parri) - Simplify architecture callbacks by removing finish_arch_switch(). (Peter Zijlstra et al) - cputime accounting: guarantee stime + utime == rtime. (Peter Zijlstra) - optimize idle CPU wakeups some more - inspired by Facebook server loads. (Mike Galbraith) - stop_machine fixes and updates. (Oleg Nesterov) - Introduce the 'trace_sched_waking' tracepoint. (Peter Zijlstra) - sched/numa tweaks. (Srikar Dronamraju) - misc fixes and small cleanups" * 'sched-core-for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip: (44 commits) sched/deadline: Fix comment in enqueue_task_dl() sched/deadline: Fix comment in push_dl_tasks() sched: Change the sched_class::set_cpus_allowed() calling context sched: Make sched_class::set_cpus_allowed() unconditional sched: Fix a race between __kthread_bind() and sched_setaffinity() sched: Ensure a task has a non-normalized vruntime when returning back to CFS sched/numa: Fix NUMA_DIRECT topology identification tile: Reorganize _switch_to() sched, sparc32: Update scheduler comments in copy_thread() sched: Remove finish_arch_switch() sched, tile: Remove finish_arch_switch sched, sh: Fold finish_arch_switch() into switch_to() sched, score: Remove finish_arch_switch() sched, avr32: Remove finish_arch_switch() sched, MIPS: Get rid of finish_arch_switch() sched, arm: Remove finish_arch_switch() sched/fair: Clean up load average references sched/fair: Provide runnable_load_avg back to cfs_rq sched/fair: Remove task and group entity load when they are dead sched/fair: Init cfs_rq's sched_entity load average ...

2015-07-29arch/*/io.h: Add ioremap_uc() to all architecturesLuis R. Rodriguez1-0/+1
This adds ioremap_uc() only for architectures that do not include asm-generic.h/io.h as that already provides a default definition for them for both cases where you have CONFIG_MMU and you do not, and because of this, the number of architectures this patch address is less than the architectures that the ioremap_wt() patch addressed, "arch/*/io.h: Add ioremap_wt() to all architectures"). In order to reduce the number of architectures we have to modify by adding new architecture IO APIs we'll have to review the architectures in this patch, see why they can't add asm-generic.h/io.h or issues that would be created by doing so and then spread a consistent inclusion of this header towards the end of their own header. For instance arch/metag includes the asm-generic/io.h *before* the ioremap*() definitions, this should be the other way around but only once we have guard wrappers for the non-MMU case also for asm-generic/io.h.
