2022-07-19KVM: selftests: Fix target thread to be migrated in rseq_testGavin Shan1-3/+5
In rseq_test, there are two threads, which are vCPU thread and migration worker separately. Unfortunately, the test has the wrong PID passed to sched_setaffinity() in the migration worker. It forces migration on the migration worker because zeroed PID represents the calling thread, which is the migration worker itself. 2022-06-23selftests: KVM: Handle compiler optimizations in ucallRaghavendra Rao Ananta1-5/+4
The selftests, when built with newer versions of clang, is found to have over optimized guests' ucall() function, and eliminating the stores for uc.cmd (perhaps due to no immediate readers). This resulted in the userspace side always reading a value of '0', and causing multiple test failures. As a result, prevent the compiler from optimizing the stores in ucall() with WRITE_ONCE(). 2022-06-09KVM: selftests: Restrict test region to 48-bit physical addresses when using ↵David Matlack1-3/+15
nested The selftests nested code only supports 4-level paging at the moment. This means it cannot map nested guest physical addresses with more than 48 bits. Allow perf_test_util nested mode to work on hosts with more than 48 physical addresses by restricting the guest test region to 48-bits. While here, opportunistically fix an off-by-one error when dealing with vm_get_max_gfn(). perf_test_util.c was treating this as the maximum number of GFNs, rather than the maximum allowed GFN. This didn't result in any correctness issues, but it did end up shifting the test region down slightly when using huge pages. 2022-06-09KVM: selftests: Add option to run dirty_log_perf_test vCPUs in L2David Matlack8-8/+182
Add an option to dirty_log_perf_test that configures the vCPUs to run in L2 instead of L1. This makes it possible to benchmark the dirty logging performance of nested virtualization, which is particularly interesting because KVM must shadow L1's EPT/NPT tables. For now this support only works on x86_64 CPUs with VMX. Otherwise passing -n results in the test being skipped. 2022-06-09KVM: selftests: Link selftests directly with lib object filesDavid Matlack1-7/+4
The linker does obey strong/weak symbols when linking static libraries, it simply resolves an undefined symbol to the first-encountered symbol. This means that defining __weak arch-generic functions and then defining arch-specific strong functions to override them in libkvm will not always work. More specifically, if we have: lib/generic.c: void __weak foo(void) { pr_info("weak\n"); } void bar(void) { foo(); } lib/x86_64/arch.c: void foo(void) { pr_info("strong\n"); } And a selftest that calls bar(), it will print "weak". Now if you make generic.o explicitly depend on arch.o (e.g. add function to arch.c that is called directly from generic.c) it will print "strong". In other words, it seems that the linker is free to throw out arch.o when linking because generic.o does not explicitly depend on it, which causes the linker to lose the strong symbol. One solution is to link libkvm.a with --whole-archive so that the linker doesn't throw away object files it thinks are unnecessary. However that is a bit difficult to plumb since we are using the common selftests makefile rules. An easier solution is to drop libkvm.a just link selftests with all the .o files that were originally in libkvm.a. 2022-06-09KVM: selftests: Replace x86_page_size with PG_LEVEL_XXDavid Matlack4-24/+29
x86_page_size is an enum used to communicate the desired page size with which to map a range of memory. Under the hood they just encode the desired level at which to map the page. This ends up being clunky in a few ways: - The name suggests it encodes the size of the page rather than the level. - In other places in x86_64/processor.c we just use a raw int to encode the level. Simplify this by adopting the kernel style of PG_LEVEL_XX enums and pass around raw ints when referring to the level. This makes the code easier to understand since these macros are very common in KVM MMU code. hyperv_clock doesn't always give a stable test result, especially with AMD CPUs. The test compares Hyper-V MSR clocksource (acquired either with rdmsr() from within the guest or KVM_GET_MSRS from the host) against rdtsc(). To increase the accuracy, increase the measured delay (done with nop loop) by two orders of magnitude and take the mean rdtsc() value before and after rdmsr()/KVM_GET_MSRS. 2022-05-20selftests: kvm/x86: Verify the pmu event filter matches the correct eventAaron Lewis1-0/+19
Add a test to demonstrate that when the guest programs an event select it is matched correctly in the pmu event filter and not inadvertently filtered. This could happen on AMD if the high nybble[1] in the event select gets truncated away only leaving the bottom byte[2] left for matching. This is a contrived example used for the convenience of demonstrating this issue, however, this can be applied to event selects 0x28A (OC Mode Switch) and 0x08A (L1 BTB Correction), where 0x08A could end up being denied when the event select was only set up to deny 0x28A. Currently, we simply hang using "while (1) ;" upon any unexpected guest traps because the default guest trap handler is guest_hang(). The above approach is not useful to anyone because KVM selftests users will only see a hung application upon any unexpected guest trap. It turns out that the address translation for clearing idle page tracking returned a wrong result; addr_gva2gpa()'s last step, which is based on "pte[index[0]].pfn", did the calculation with 40 bits length and the high 12 bits got truncated. In above case the GPA address to be returned should be 0x3fffbffff000 for GVA 0xc0000000, but it got truncated into 0xffbffff000 and the subsequent gpa2hva lookup failed. The width of operations on bit fields greater than 32-bit is implementation defined, and differs between GCC (which uses the bitfield precision) and clang (which uses 64-bit arithmetic), so this is a potential minefield. Remove the bit fields and using manual masking instead. Supporting hardware updates of PTE A and D bits is optional for any RISC-V implementation so current software strategy is to always set these bits in both G-stage (hypervisor) and VS-stage (guest kernel). If PTE A and D bits are not set by software (hypervisor or guest) then RISC-V implementations not supporting hardware updates of these bits will cause traps even for perfectly valid PTEs. Based on above explanation, the VS-stage page table created by various KVM selftest applications is not correct because PTE A and D bits are not set. This patch fixes VS-stage page table programming of PTE A and D bits for KVM selftests. 2022-04-07selftests: KVM: Don't leak GIC FD across dirty log test iterationsOliver Upton1-3/+31
dirty_log_perf_test instantiates a VGICv3 for the guest (if supported by hardware) to reduce the overhead of guest exits. However, the test does not actually close the GIC fd when cleaning up the VM between test iterations, meaning that the VM is never actually destroyed in the kernel. While this is generally a bad idea, the bug was detected from the kernel spewing about duplicate debugfs entries as subsequent VMs happen to reuse the same FD even though the debugfs directory is still present. Abstract away the notion of setup/cleanup of the GIC FD from the test by creating arch-specific helpers for test setup/cleanup. Close the GIC FD on VM cleanup and do nothing for the other architectures. When testing a kernel with commit a5905d6af492 ("KVM: arm64: Allow SMCCC_ARCH_WORKAROUND_3 to be discovered and migrated") get-reg-list output vregs: Number blessed registers: 234 vregs: Number registers: 238 vregs: There are 1 new registers. Consider adding them to the blessed reg list with the following lines: KVM_REG_ARM_FW_REG(3), vregs: PASS ... That output inspired two changes: 1) add the new register to the blessed list and 2) explain why "Number registers" is actually four larger than "Number blessed registers" (on the system used for testing), even though only one register is being stated as new. The reason is that some registers are host dependent and they get filtered out when comparing with the blessed list. The system used for the test apparently had three filtered registers.
