2021-01-20perf tools: Add 'evlist' control commandJiri Olsa1-1/+1
Add a new 'evlist' control command to display all the evlist events. When it is received, perf will scan and print current evlist into perf record terminal. The interface string for control file is: evlist [-v|-g|-F] The syntax follows perf evlist command: -F Show just the sample frequency used for each event. -v Show all fields. -g Show event group information. Example session: terminal 1: # mkfifo control ack # perf record --control=fifo:control,ack -e '{cycles,instructions}' terminal 2: # echo evlist > control terminal 1: cycles instructions dummy:HG terminal 2: # echo 'evlist -v' > control terminal 1: cycles: size: 120, { sample_period, sample_freq }: 4000, sample_type: \ IP|TID|TIME|ID|CPU|PERIOD, read_format: ID, disabled: 1, inherit: 1, freq: 1, \ sample_id_all: 1, exclude_guest: 1 instructions: size: 120, config: 0x1, { sample_period, sample_freq }: 4000, \ sample_type: IP|TID|TIME|ID|CPU|PERIOD, read_format: ID, inherit: 1, freq: 1, \ sample_id_all: 1, exclude_guest: 1 dummy:HG: type: 1, size: 120, config: 0x9, { sample_period, sample_freq }: 4000, \ sample_type: IP|TID|TIME|ID|CPU|PERIOD, read_format: ID, inherit: 1, mmap: 1, \ comm: 1, freq: 1, task: 1, sample_id_all: 1, mmap2: 1, comm_exec: 1, ksymbol: 1, \ bpf_event: 1 terminal 2: # echo 'evlist -g' > control terminal 1: {cycles,instructions} dummy:HG terminal 2: # echo 'evlist -F' > control terminal 1: cycles: sample_freq=4000 instructions: sample_freq=4000 dummy:HG: sample_freq=4000 This new evlist command is handy to get real event names when wildcards are used. Adding evsel_fprintf.c object to python/perf.so build, because it's now evlist.c dependency. Adding PYTHON_PERF define for python/perf.so compilation, so we can use it to compile in only evsel__fprintf from evsel_fprintf.c object. 2020-04-03perf python: Fix clang detection to strip out options passed in $CCArnaldo Carvalho de Melo1-1/+1
The clang check in the python setup.py file expected $CC to be just the name of the compiler, not the compiler + options, i.e. all options were expected to be passed in $CFLAGS, this ends up making it fail in systems where CC is set to, e.g.: "aarch64-linaro-linux-gcc --sysroot=/oe/build/tmp/work/juno-linaro-linux/perf/1.0-r9/recipe-sysroot" Like this: $ python3 >>> from subprocess import Popen >>> a = Popen(["aarch64-linux-gnu-gcc --sysroot=/oe/build/tmp/work/juno-linaro-linux/perf/1.0-r9/recipe-sysroot", "-v"]) Traceback (most recent call last): File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module> File "/usr/lib/python3.6/subprocess.py", line 729, in __init__ restore_signals, start_new_session) File "/usr/lib/python3.6/subprocess.py", line 1364, in _execute_child raise child_exception_type(errno_num, err_msg, err_filename) FileNotFoundError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: 'aarch64-linux-gnu-gcc --sysroot=/oe/build/tmp/work/juno-linaro-linux/perf/1.0-r9/recipe-sysroot': 'aarch64-linux-gnu-gcc --sysroot=/oe/build/tmp/work/juno-linaro-linux/perf/1.0-r9/recipe-sysroot' >>> Make it more robust, covering this case, by passing cc.split()[0] as the first arg to popen(). 2020-03-09perf python: Fix clang detection when using CC=clang-versionIlie Halip1-4/+6
Currently, the setup.py script detects the clang compiler only when invoked with CC=clang. But when using a specific version (e.g. CC=clang-11), this doesn't work correctly and wrong compiler flags are set, leading to build errors. To properly detect clang, invoke the compiler with -v and check the output. The first line should start with "clang version ...". that the distro specific python extension building compiler defaults: if cc_is_clang: from distutils.sysconfig import get_config_vars vars = get_config_vars() for var in ('CFLAGS', 'OPT'): vars[var] = sub("-specs=[^ ]+", "", vars[var]) if not clang_has_option("-mcet"): vars[var] = sub("-mcet", "", vars[var]) if not clang_has_option("-fcf-protection"): vars[var] = sub("-fcf-protection", "", sub("-fstack-protector-strong", "", vars[var]) So "-fcf-protection=full" is used, clang-9 has this option and thus it was kept, the perf python extension was built with it and the build completed successfully. Now perf builds with gcc in ClearLinux with the following Dockerfile: # docker.io/acmel/linux-perf-tools-build-clearlinux:latest FROM docker.io/clearlinux:latest MAINTAINER Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@kernel.org> RUN swupd update && \ swupd bundle-add sysadmin-basic-dev RUN mkdir -m 777 -p /git /tmp/build/perf /tmp/build/objtool /tmp/build/linux && \ groupadd -r perfbuilder && \ useradd -m -r -g perfbuilder perfbuilder && \ chown -R perfbuilder.perfbuilder /tmp/build/ /git/ USER perfbuilder COPY rx_and_build.sh / ENV EXTRA_MAKE_ARGS=PYTHON=python3 ENTRYPOINT ["/rx_and_build.sh"] Now to figure out why the build fails with clang, that is present in the above container as detected by the rx_and_build.sh script: clang version 6.0.1 (tags/RELEASE_601/final) Target: x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu Thread model: posix InstalledDir: /usr/sbin make: Entering directory '/git/linux/tools/perf' BUILD: Doing 'make -j4' parallel build HOSTCC /tmp/build/perf/fixdep.o HOSTLD /tmp/build/perf/fixdep-in.o LINK /tmp/build/perf/fixdep Auto-detecting system features: ... dwarf: [ OFF ] ... dwarf_getlocations: [ OFF ] ... glibc: [ OFF ] ... gtk2: [ OFF ] ... libaudit: [ OFF ] ... libbfd: [ OFF ] ... libelf: [ OFF ] ... libnuma: [ OFF ] ... numa_num_possible_cpus: [ OFF ] ... libperl: [ OFF ] ... libpython: [ OFF ] ... libslang: [ OFF ] ... libcrypto: [ OFF ] ... libunwind: [ OFF ] ... libdw-dwarf-unwind: [ OFF ] ... zlib: [ OFF ] ... lzma: [ OFF ] ... get_cpuid: [ OFF ] ... bpf: [ OFF ] Makefile.config:331: *** No gnu/libc-version.h found, please install glibc-dev[el]. 2018-08-14perf python: Remove -mcet and -fcf-protection when building with clangArnaldo Carvalho de Melo1-1/+9
These options are not present in older clang versions, so when we build for a distro that has a gcc new enough to have these options and that the distro python build config settings use them but clang doesn't support, b00m. This is the case with fedora 28 and rawhide, so check if clang has the options and remove the missing ones from CFLAGS. 2018-03-19perf tools: Fix python extension build for gcc 8Jiri Olsa1-0/+2
The gcc 8 compiler won't compile the python extension code with the following errors (one example): python.c:830:15: error: cast between incompatible function types from \ ‘PyObject * (*)(struct pyrf_evsel *, PyObject *, PyObject *)’ \ uct _object * (*)(struct pyrf_evsel *, struct _object *, struct _object *)’} to \ ‘PyObject * (*)(PyObject *, PyObject *)’ {aka ‘struct _object * (*)(struct _objeuct \ _object *)’} [-Werror=cast-function-type] .ml_meth = (PyCFunction)pyrf_evsel__open, The problem with the PyMethodDef::ml_meth callback is that its type is determined based on the PyMethodDef::ml_flags value, which we set as METH_VARARGS | METH_KEYWORDS. That indicates that the callback is expecting an extra PyObject* arg, and is actually PyCFunctionWithKeywords type, but the base PyMethodDef::ml_meth type stays PyCFunction. Previous gccs did not find this, gcc8 now does. Fixing this by silencing this warning for python.c build. Commiter notes: Do not do that for CC=clang, as it breaks the build in some clang versions, like the ones in fedora up to fedora27: fedora:25:error: unknown warning option '-Wno-cast-function-type'; did you mean '-Wno-bad-function-cast'? [-Werror,-Wunknown-warning-option] fedora:26:error: unknown warning option '-Wno-cast-function-type'; did you mean '-Wno-bad-function-cast'? [-Werror,-Wunknown-warning-option] # those have: clang version 3.9.1 (tags/RELEASE_391/final) The one in rawhide accepts that: clang version 6.0.0 (tags/RELEASE_600/final) Signed-off-by: Jiri Olsa <jolsa@kernel.org> Tested-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com> Cc: Alexander Shishkin <alexander.shishkin@linux.intel.com> Cc: David Ahern <dsahern@gmail.com> Cc: Josh Poimboeuf <jpoimboe@redhat.com> Cc: Namhyung Kim <namhyung@kernel.org> Cc: Peter Zijlstra <peterz@infradead.org> Cc: Sergey Senozhatsky <sergey.senozhatsky.work@gmail.com> Link: http://lkml.kernel.org/r/20180319082902.4518-2-jolsa@kernel.org Signed-off-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com>
2018-02-19perf tools: Add Python 3 supportJaroslav Škarvada1-3/+3
Added Python 3 support while keeping Python 2.7 compatibility. Committer notes: This doesn't make it to auto detect python 3, one has to explicitely ask it to build with python 3 devel files, here are the instructions provided by Jaroslav: --- $ cp -a tools/perf tools/python3-perf $ make V=1 prefix=/usr -C tools/perf PYTHON=/usr/bin/python2 all $ make V=1 prefix=/usr -C tools/python3-perf PYTHON=/usr/bin/python3 all $ make V=1 prefix=/usr -C tools/python3-perf PYTHON=/usr/bin/python3 DESTDIR=%{buildroot} install-python_ext $ make V=1 prefix=/usr -C tools/perf PYTHON=/usr/bin/python2 DESTDIR=%{buildroot} install-python_ext --- We need to make this automatic, just like the existing tests for checking if the python2 devel files are in place, allowing the build with python3 if available, fallbacking to python2 and then just disabling it if none are available. So, using the PYTHON variable to build it using O= we get: Before this patch: $ rpm -q python3 python3-devel python3-3.6.4-7.fc27.x86_64 python3-devel-3.6.4-7.fc27.x86_64 $ rm -rf /tmp/build/perf/ ; mkdir -p /tmp/build/perf ; make O=/tmp/build/perf PYTHON=/usr/bin/python3 -C tools/perf install-bin make: Entering directory '/home/acme/git/linux/tools/perf' <SNIP> Makefile.config:670: Python 3 is not yet supported; please set Makefile.config:671: PYTHON and/or PYTHON_CONFIG appropriately. 2017-02-17perf python: Filter out -specs=/a/b/c from the python binding cc optionsArnaldo Carvalho de Melo1-1/+8
The -spec=/path/to/file can be used to change what gcc puts in the cc, ld, etc command lines, but this is not present in clang, filter it out at the setup.py file by changing python2's internal variable where it keeps its initial CFLAGS value. With this all of perf can be built in at least Fedora 25, fixing this problem: GEN /tmp/build/perf/python/perf.so CC /tmp/build/perf/builtin-buildid-list.o clang-4.0: error: argument unused during compilation: '-specs=/usr/lib/rpm/redhat/redhat-hardened-cc1' [-Werror,-Wunused-command-line-argument] clang-4.0: error: argument unused during compilation: '-specs=/usr/lib/rpm/redhat/redhat-hardened-cc1' [-Werror,-Wunused-command-line-argument] error: command 'clang' failed with exit status 1 Now I need to change all the containers where I have clang to build perf with it, so that we can check that in other distros (opensuse, debian, ubuntu, etc) this also works. 2016-02-29perf tools: Fix python extension buildJiri Olsa1-0/+4
The util/python-ext-sources file contains source files required to build the python extension relative to $(srctree)/tools/perf, Such a file path $(FILE).c is handed over to the python extension build system, which builds the final object in the $(PYTHON_EXTBUILD)/tmp/$(FILE).o path. After the build is done all files from $(PYTHON_EXTBUILD)lib/ are carried as the result binaries. Above system fails when we add source file relative to ../lib, which we do for: ../lib/bitmap.c ../lib/find_bit.c ../lib/hweight.c ../lib/rbtree.c All above objects will be built like: $(PYTHON_EXTBUILD)/tmp/../lib/bitmap.c $(PYTHON_EXTBUILD)/tmp/../lib/find_bit.c $(PYTHON_EXTBUILD)/tmp/../lib/hweight.c $(PYTHON_EXTBUILD)/tmp/../lib/rbtree.c which accidentally happens to be final library path: $(PYTHON_EXTBUILD)/lib/ Changing setup.py to pass full paths of source files to Extension build class and thus keep all built objects under $(PYTHON_EXTBUILD)tmp directory. Move debugfs.* to api/fs/. We have a common tools/lib/api/ place where the Makefile lives and then we place the headers in subdirs. 2012-02-13perf tools: Fix build dependency of perf python extensionNamhyung Kim1-4/+4
The perf python extention (perf.so) file lacks its dependencies in the Makefile so that it cannot be refreshed if one of source files it depends is changed. Fix it by putting them in a separate file and processing it in both of Makefile and setup.py. 2011-08-08perf tools: Add support to install perf python extensionJiri Olsa1-1/+20
Adding install-python_ext target to install python extension related files. Installation directory is governed by python distutils package and follows the DESTDIR variable settings. Also moving python extension build output into '$(O)python_ext_build' directory and making it configurable via PYTHON_EXTBUILD variable. Keeping the '$(O)python/perf.so' file, so it could be used for testing as of until now. 2011-01-30perf tools: Initial python bindingArnaldo Carvalho de Melo1-0/+18
First clarifying that this kind of binding is not a replacement or an equivalent to the 'perf script' way of using python with perf. The 'perf script' way is to process events and look at a given script for some python function that matches the events to pass each event for processing. This is a python module, i.e. everything is driven from the python script, that merely uses "import perf" or "from perf import". perf script is focused on tracepoints, this binding is focused on profiling as an initial target. More work is needed to make available tracepoint specific variables as event variables accessible via this binding. There is one example of such usage model, in tools/perf/python/twatch.py, a tool to watch "cycles" events together with task (fork, exit) and comm perf events. For now, due to me not being able to grok how python distutils cope with building C extensions outside the sources dir the install target just builds it, I'm using it as: [root@emilia linux]# export PYTHONPATH=~acme/git/build/perf/lib.linux-x86_64-2.6/ [root@emilia linux]# tools/perf/python/twatch.py cpu: 4, pid: 30126, tid: 30126 { type: mmap, pid: 30126, tid: 30126, start: 0x4, length: 0x82e9ca03, offset: 0, filename: } cpu: 6, pid: 47, tid: 47 { type: mmap, pid: 47, tid: 47, start: 0x6, length: 0xbef87c36, offset: 0, filename: } cpu: 1, pid: 0, tid: 0 { type: mmap, pid: 0, tid: 0, start: 0x1, length: 0x775d1904, offset: 0, filename: } cpu: 7, pid: 0, tid: 0 { type: mmap, pid: 0, tid: 0, start: 0x7, length: 0xc750aeb6, offset: 0, filename: } cpu: 5, pid: 2255, tid: 2255 { type: mmap, pid: 2255, tid: 2255, start: 0x5, length: 0x76669635, offset: 0, filename: } cpu: 0, pid: 0, tid: 0 { type: mmap, pid: 0, tid: 0, start: 0, length: 0x6422ef6b, offset: 0, filename: } cpu: 2, pid: 2255, tid: 2255 { type: mmap, pid: 2255, tid: 2255, start: 0x2, length: 0xe078757a, offset: 0, filename: } cpu: 1, pid: 5769, tid: 5769 { type: fork, pid: 30127, ppid: 5769, tid: 30127, ptid: 5769, time: 103893991270534} cpu: 6, pid: 30127, tid: 30127 { type: comm, pid: 30127, tid: 30127, comm: ls } cpu: 6, pid: 30127, tid: 30127 { type: exit, pid: 30127, ppid: 30127, tid: 30127, ptid: 30127, time: 103893993273024} The first 8 mmap events in this 8 way machine are a mistery that is still being investigated. More of the tools/perf/util/ APIs will be exposed via this python binding as the need arises. For now the focus is on creating events and processing them, symbol resolution is an obvious next step, with tracepoint variables as a close second step.
