We shouldn't use headers from the kernel sources directly, instead we should use the system's headers or in cases where that isn't possible, like with perf_event.h, where the introduction of kernel features such as perf_event_attr.{write_backwards,sample_max_stack} and PERF_EVENT_IOC_PAUSE_OUTPUT take some time to become available in /usr/include/linux/perf_event.h we need a copy. Do it and check for source code drift, emitting a warning when changes are detected. The tools so far have been using the strerror_r() GNU variant, that returns a string, be it the buffer passed or something else. But that, besides being tricky in cases where we expect that the function using strerror_r() returns the error formatted in a provided buffer (we have to check if it returned something else and copy that instead), breaks the build on systems not using glibc, like Alpine Linux, where musl libc is used. So, introduce yet another wrapper, str_error_r(), that has the GNU interface, but uses the portable XSI variant of strerror_r(), so that users rest asured that the provided buffer is used and it is what is returned. The commit that introduced it should've moved it to the same place, plus the 'tools/' prefix, but instead moved it to a bogus tools/lib/util/ directory, being the only file there. 2015-10-28perf tools: Make perf depend on libbpfWang Nan1-0/+3
By adding libbpf into perf's Makefile, this patch enables perf to build libbpf if libelf is found and neither NO_LIBELF nor NO_LIBBPF is set. The newly introduced code is similar to how libapi and libtraceevent are wired into Makefile.perf. MANIFEST is also updated for 'make perf-*-src-pkg'. Append make_no_libbpf to tools/perf/tests/make. The 'bpf' feature check is appended into default FEATURE_TESTS and FEATURE_DISPLAY, so perf will check the API version of bpf in /path/to/kernel/include/uapi/linux/bpf.h. Which should not fail except when we are trying to port this code to an old kernel. Error messages are also updated to notify users about the lack of BPF support in 'perf record' if libelf is missing or the BPF API check failed. tools/lib/bpf is added to TAG_FOLDERS to allow us to navigate libbpf files when working on perf using tools/perf/tags. 2015-09-02perf tools: Copy linux/filter.h to tools/includeHe Kuang1-0/+1
This patch copies filter.h from include/linux/kernel.h to tools/include/linux/filter.h to enable other libraries to use macros in it, like libbpf which will be introduced by further patches. Currently, the filter.h copy only contains the useful macros needed by libbpf for not introducing too much dependence. tools/perf/MANIFEST is also updated for 'make perf-*-src-pkg'. One change: The 'imm' field of BPF_EMIT_CALL becomes ((FUNC) - BPF_FUNC_unspec) to suit user space code generator. 2015-08-07perf tests: Add LLVM test for eBPF on-the-fly compilingWang Nan1-0/+1
Previous patches introduce llvm__compile_bpf() to compile source file to eBPF object. This patch adds testcase to test it. It also tests libbpf by opening generated object after applying next patch which introduces HAVE_LIBBPF_SUPPORT option. Since llvm__compile_bpf() prints long messages which users who don't explicitly test llvm doesn't care, this patch set verbose to -1 to suppress all debug, warning and error message, and hint user use 'perf test -v' to see the full output. For the same reason, if clang is not found in PATH and there's no [llvm] section in .perfconfig, skip this test. This patch moves list.h from tools/perf/util/include/linux/list.h to tools/include/linux/list.h to enable other libraries use macros in it, like libbpf which will be introduced by further patches. Since list.h depend on poison.h, poison.h is also moved. Both file use relative path, so one '..' is removed for each header to make them suit for new directory. MANIFEST is also updated for 'make perf-*-src-pkg'. Adding new build framework into 'tools/build' to be used by tools. There's no change for actual building at this point, it comes in the next patches. The idea and more details are explained in the 'tools/build/Documentation/Build.txt' file. I adopted everything from the kernel build system, with some changes to allow for multiple binaries build definitions. While the kernel's build output is single image (forget modules) we need to be able to build several binaries/libraries. We need to use lib/hweight.c for that, just like we do for lib/rbtree.c, so tools need to link hweight.o. For now do it directly, but we need to have a tools/lib/lk.a or .so that collects these goodies...
