2014-06-27tipc: same receive code path for connection protocol and data messagesJon Paul Maloy1-40/+0
As a preparation to eliminate port_lock we need to bring reception of connection protocol messages under proper protection of bh_lock_sock or socket owner. We fix this by letting those messages follow the same code path as incoming data messages. As a side effect of this change, the last reference to the function net_route_msg() disappears, and we can eliminate that function. 2014-06-27tipc: introduce message evaluation functionJon Paul Maloy1-27/+6
When a message arrives in a node and finds no destination socket, we may need to drop it, reject it, or forward it after a secondary destination lookup. The latter two cases currently results in a code path that is perceived as complex, because it follows a deep call chain via obscure functions such as net_route_named_msg() and net_route_msg(). We now introduce a function, tipc_msg_eval(), that takes the decision about whether such a message should be rejected or forwarded, but leaves it to the caller to actually perform the indicated action. If the decision is 'reject', it is still the task of the recently introduced function tipc_msg_reverse() to take the final decision about whether the message is rejectable or not. In the latter case it drops the message. As a result of this change, we can finally eliminate the function net_route_named_msg(), and hence become independent of net_route_msg(). 2014-04-22tipc: purge tipc_net_lock lockYing Xue1-35/+24
Now tipc routing hierarchy comprises the structures 'node', 'link'and 'bearer'. The whole hierarchy is protected by a big read/write lock, tipc_net_lock, to ensure that nothing is added or removed while code is accessing any of these structures. Obviously the locking policy makes node, link and bearer components closely bound together so that their relationship becomes unnecessarily complex. In the worst case, such locking policy not only has a negative influence on performance, but also it's prone to lead to deadlock occasionally. In order o decouple the complex relationship between bearer and node as well as link, the locking policy is adjusted as follows: - Bearer level RTNL lock is used on update side, and RCU is used on read side. Meanwhile, all bearer instances including broadcast bearer are saved into bearer_list array. - Node and link level All node instances are saved into two tipc_node_list and node_htable lists. The two lists are protected by node_list_lock on write side, and they are guarded with RCU lock on read side. All members in node structure including link instances are protected by node spin lock. - The relationship between bearer and node When link accesses bearer, it first needs to find the bearer with its bearer identity from the bearer_list array. When bearer accesses node, it can iterate the node_htable hash list with the node address to find the corresponding node. In the new locking policy, every component has its private locking solution and the relationship between bearer and node is very simple, that is, they can find each other with node address or bearer identity from node_htable hash list or bearer_list array. Until now above all changes have been done, so tipc_net_lock can be removed safely. 2014-04-03tipc: fix regression bug where node events are not being generatedErik Hugne1-0/+3
Commit 5902385a2440a55f005b266c93e0bb9398e5a62b ("tipc: obsolete the remote management feature") introduces a regression where node topology events are not being generated because the publication that triggers this: {0, <z.c.n>, <z.c.n>} is no longer available. This will break applications that rely on node events to discover when nodes join/leave a cluster. We fix this by advertising the node publication when TIPC enters networking mode, and withdraws it upon shutdown. 2014-03-27tipc: rename node create lock to protect node list and hlistYing Xue1-4/+3
When a node is created, tipc_net_lock read lock is first held and then node_create_lock is grabbed in order to prevent the same node from being created and inserted into both node list and hlist twice. But when we query node from the two node lists, we only hold tipc_net_lock read lock without grabbing node_create_lock. Obviously this locking policy is unable to guarantee that the two node lists are always synchronized especially when the operation of changing and accessing them occurs in different contexts like currently doing. Therefore, rename node_create_lock to node_list_lock to protect the two node lists, that is, whenever node is inserted into them or node is queried from them, the node_list_lock should be always held. As a result, tipc_net_lock read lock becomes redundant and then can be removed from the node query functions. 2014-03-27tipc: obsolete the remote management featureYing Xue1-2/+0
Due to the lacking of any credential, it's allowed to accept commands requested from remote nodes to query the local node status, which is prone to involve potential security risks. Instead, if we login to a remote node with ssh command, this approach is not only more safe than the remote management feature, but also it can give us more permissions like changing the remote node configuration. 2012-04-26tipc: Enhance re-initialization of network topology serviceAllan Stephens1-3/+0
Streamlines the job of re-initializing TIPC's network topology service when a node's network address is first assigned. Rather than destroying the topology server port and breaking its connections to existing subscribers, TIPC now simply lets the service continue running (since the change to the port identifier of each port used by the topology service no longer impacts the flow of messages between the service and its subscribers). This enhancement means that applications that utilize the topology service prior to the assignment of TIPC's network address no longer need to re-establish their subscriptions when the address is finally assigned. However, it is worth noting that any subsequent events for existing subscriptions report the new port identifier of the publishing port, rather than the original port identifier. (For example, a name that was previously reported as being published by <0.0.0:ref> may be subsequently withdrawn by <Z.C.N:ref>.) This doesn't impact any of the existing known userspace in tipc-utils, since (a) TIPC continues to treat references to the original port ID correctly and (b) normal use cases assign an address before active use. However if there does happen to be some rare/custom application out there that was relying on this, they can simply bypass the enhancement by issuing a subscription to {0,0} and break its connection to the topology service, if an associated withdrawal event occurs. 2012-04-26tipc: Optimize re-initialization of configuration serviceAllan Stephens1-2/+1
Streamlines the job of re-initializing TIPC's configuration service when a node's network address is first assigned. 2012-04-19tipc: take lock while updating node network addressAllan Stephens1-1/+2
The routine that changes the node's network address now takes TIPC's network lock in write mode while the main address variable and associated data structures are being changed; this is needed to ensure that the link subsystem won't attempt to send a message off-node until the sending port's message header template has been updated with the node's new network address. 2012-02-24tipc: Eliminate support for tipc_mode global variableAllan Stephens1-6/+1
Removes all references to the global variable that records whether TIPC is running in "single node" mode or "network" mode, since this information can be easily deduced from the global variable that records TIPC's network address. (i.e. a non-zero network address means that TIPC is running in network mode.) The changes made update most existing mode-based checks to use the network address global variable. A few checks that are no longer needed are removed entirely, along with any associated code lying on non-executable control paths. 2011-12-27tipc: Eliminate dynamic allocation of broadcast link data structuresAllan Stephens1-4/+1
Creates global variables to hold the broadcast link's pseudo-bearer and pseudo-link structures, rather than allocating them dynamically. 2011-03-13tipc: Convert node object array to a hash tableAllan Stephens1-10/+5
Replaces the dynamically allocated array of pointers to the cluster's node objects with a static hash table. Hash collisions are resolved using chaining, with a typical hash chain having only a single node, to avoid degrading performance during processing of incoming packets. The conversion to a hash table reduces the memory requirements for TIPC's node table to approximately the same size it had prior to the previous commit. In addition to the hash table itself, TIPC now also maintains a linked list for the node objects, sorted by ascending network address. This list allows TIPC to continue sending responses to user space applications that request node and link information in sorted order. The list also improves performance when name table update messages are sent by making it easier to identify the nodes that must be notified. 2011-03-13tipc: Eliminate configuration for maximum number of cluster nodesAllan Stephens1-2/+1
Gets rid of the need for users to specify the maximum number of cluster nodes supported by TIPC. TIPC now automatically provides support for all 4K nodes allowed by its addressing scheme. Note: This change sets TIPC's memory usage to the amount used by a maximum size node table with 4K entries. An upcoming patch that converts the node table from a linear array to a hash table will compact the node table to a more efficient design, but for clarity it is nice to have all the Kconfig infrastruture go away separately. Removes a race condition that could cause TIPC's internal counter of the number of links it has to neighboring nodes to have the incorrect value if two independent threads of control simultaneously create new link endpoints connecting to two different nodes using two different bearers. Such under counting would result in TIPC failing to list the final link(s) in its response to a configuration request to list all of the node's links. The following backtrace has been observed: ID: 13459 TASK: ffff810014640040 CPU: 0 COMMAND: "tipc-client" [exception RIP: tipc_node_select_next_hop+90] RIP: ffffffff8869d3c3 RSP: ffff81002d9a5ab8 RFLAGS: 00010202 RAX: 0000000000000001 RBX: 0000000000000001 RCX: 0000000000000001 RDX: 0000000000000000 RSI: 0000000000000001 RDI: 0000000001001001 RBP: 0000000001001001 R8: 0074736575716552 R9: 0000000000000000 R10: ffff81003fbd0680 R11: 00000000000000c8 R12: 0000000000000008 R13: 0000000000000001 R14: 0000000000000001 R15: ffff810015c6ca00 ORIG_RAX: ffffffffffffffff CS: 0010 SS: 0018 RIP: 0000003cbd8d49a3 RSP: 00007fffc84e0be8 RFLAGS: 00010206 RAX: 000000000000002c RBX: ffffffff8005d116 RCX: 0000000000000000 RDX: 0000000000000008 RSI: 00007fffc84e0c00 RDI: 0000000000000003 RBP: 0000000000000000 R8: 00007fffc84e0c10 R9: 0000000000000010 R10: 0000000000000000 R11: 0000000000000246 R12: 0000000000000000 R13: 00007fffc84e0d10 R14: 0000000000000000 R15: 00007fffc84e0c30 ORIG_RAX: 000000000000002c CS: 0033 SS: 002b What happens is that, when the tipc module in inserted it enters a standalone node mode in which communication to its own address is allowed <0.0.0> but not to other addresses, since the appropriate data structures have not been allocated yet (specifically the tipc_net pointer). There is nothing stopping a client from trying to send such a message however, and if that happens, we attempt to dereference tipc_net.zones while the pointer is still NULL, and explode. The fix is pretty straightforward. Since these oopses all arise from the dereference of global pointers prior to their assignment to allocated values, and since these allocations are small (about 2k total), lets convert these pointers to static arrays of the appropriate size. All the accesses to these bits consider 0/NULL to be a non match when searching, so all the lookups still work properly, and there is no longer a chance of a bad dererence anywhere. As a bonus, this lets us eliminate the setup/teardown routines for those pointers, and elimnates the need to preform any locking around them to prevent access while their being allocated/freed. I've updated the tipc_net structure to behave this way to fix the exact reported problem, and also fixed up the tipc_bearers and media_list arrays to fix an obvious simmilar problem that arises from issuing tipc-config commands to manipulate bearers/links prior to entering networked mode I've tested this for a few hours by running the sanity tests and stress test with the tipcutils suite, and nothing has fallen over. There have been a few lockdep warnings, but those were there before, and can be addressed later, as they didn't actually result in any deadlock. 2008-09-02tipc: Don't use structure names which easily globally conflict.David S. Miller1-1/+1
Andrew Morton reported a build failure on sparc32, because TIPC uses names like "struct node" and there is a like named data structure defined in linux/node.h This just regexp replaces "struct node*" to "struct tipc_node*" to avoid this and any future similar problems. 2008-07-14tipc: Eliminate improper use of TIPC_OK error codeAllan Stephens1-2/+2
This patch corrects many places where TIPC routines indicated successful completion by returning TIPC_OK instead of 0. (The TIPC_OK symbol has the value 0, but it should only be used in contexts that deal with the error code field of a TIPC message header.) 2008-05-21tipc: Fix initialization sequence problems when entering network modeAllan Stephens1-3/+7
This patch ensures that TIPC's topology service and configuration service are shut down before switching into "network mode". This ensures that TIPC does not mistakenly try to send unnecessary "publication withdraw" messages to other nodes before it is fully initialized for sending off-node messages. Note that the node's current network address is now updated only after the two services are shut down; this ensures that any existing connections to the topology server are terminated correctly using the old address. 2006-06-27[PATCH] spin/rwlock init cleanupsIngo Molnar1-1/+1
locking init cleanups: - convert " = SPIN_LOCK_UNLOCKED" to spin_lock_init() or DEFINE_SPINLOCK() - convert rwlocks in a similar manner this patch was generated automatically. Motivation: - cleanliness - lockdep needs control of lock initialization, which the open-coded variants do not give - it's also useful for -rt and for lock debugging in general Signed-off-by: Ingo Molnar <mingo@elte.hu> Signed-off-by: Arjan van de Ven <arjan@linux.intel.com> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
