2021-06-23mac80211: Switch to a virtual time-based airtime schedulerToke Høiland-Jørgensen1-18/+49
This switches the airtime scheduler in mac80211 to use a virtual time-based scheduler instead of the round-robin scheduler used before. This has a couple of advantages: - No need to sync up the round-robin scheduler in firmware/hardware with the round-robin airtime scheduler. - If several stations are eligible for transmission we can schedule both of them; no need to hard-block the scheduling rotation until the head of the queue has used up its quantum. - The check of whether a station is eligible for transmission becomes simpler (in ieee80211_txq_may_transmit()). The drawback is that scheduling becomes slightly more expensive, as we need to maintain an rbtree of TXQs sorted by virtual time. This means that ieee80211_register_airtime() becomes O(logN) in the number of currently scheduled TXQs because it can change the order of the scheduled stations. We mitigate this overhead by only resorting when a station changes position in the tree, and hopefully N rarely grows too big (it's only TXQs currently backlogged, not all associated stations), so it shouldn't be too big of an issue. To prevent divisions in the fast path, we maintain both station sums and pre-computed reciprocals of the sums. This turns the fast-path operation into a multiplication, with divisions only happening as the number of active stations change (to re-compute the current sum of all active station weights). To prevent this re-computation of the reciprocal from happening too frequently, we use a time-based notion of station activity, instead of updating the weight every time a station gets scheduled or de-scheduled. As queues can oscillate between empty and occupied quite frequently, this can significantly cut down on the number of re-computations. It also has the added benefit of making the station airtime calculation independent on whether the queue happened to have drained at the time an airtime value was accounted. 2021-06-23mac80211: consider per-CPU statistics if presentJohannes Berg1-8/+3
If we have been keeping per-CPU statistics, consider them regardless of USES_RSS, because we may not actually fill those, for example in non-fast-RX cases when the connection is not compatible with fast-RX. If we didn't fill them, the additional data will be zero and not affect anything, and if we did fill them then it's more correct to consider them. This fixes an issue in mesh mode where some statistics are not updated due to USES_RSS being set, but fast-RX isn't used. 2021-05-11mac80211: add fragment cache to sta_infoJohannes Berg1-1/+5
Prior patches protected against fragmentation cache attacks by coloring keys, but this shows that it can lead to issues when multiple stations use the same sequence number. Add a fragment cache to struct sta_info (in addition to the one in the interface) to separate fragments for different stations properly. This then automatically clear most of the fragment cache when a station disconnects (or reassociates) from an AP, or when client interfaces disconnect from the network, etc. On the way, also fix the comment there since this brings us in line with the recommendation in 802.11-2016 ("An AP should support ..."). Additionally, remove a useless condition (since there's no problem purging an already empty list). 2020-11-13mac80211: free sta in sta_info_insert_finish() on errorsJohannes Berg1-10/+4
If sta_info_insert_finish() fails, we currently keep the station around and free it only in the caller, but there's only one such caller and it always frees it immediately. As syzbot found, another consequence of this split is that we can put things that sleep only into __cleanup_single_sta() and not in sta_info_free(), but this is the only place that requires such of sta_info_free() now. Change this to free the station in sta_info_insert_finish(), in which case we can still sleep. This will also let us unify the cleanup code later. 2020-10-30mac80211: always wind down STA stateJohannes Berg1-0/+18
When (for example) an IBSS station is pre-moved to AUTHORIZED before it's inserted, and then the insertion fails, we don't clean up the fast RX/TX states that might already have been created, since we don't go through all the state transitions again on the way down. Do that, if it hasn't been done already, when the station is freed. I considered only freeing the fast TX/RX state there, but we might add more state so it's more robust to wind down the state properly. Note that we warn if the station was ever inserted, it should have been properly cleaned up in that case, and the driver will probably not like things happening out of order. 2020-10-08mac80211: handle lack of sband->bitrates in ratesThomas Pedersen1-0/+4

2020-07-30mac80211: remove STA txq pending airtime underflow warningFelix Fietkau1-3/+1
This warning can trigger if there is a mismatch between frames that were sent with the sta pointer set vs tx status frames reported for the sta address. This can happen due to race conditions on re-creating stations, or even in the case of .sta_add/remove being used instead of .sta_state, which can cause frames to be sent to a station that has not been uploaded yet. 2019-12-13mac80211: Turn AQL into an NL80211_EXT_FEATUREToke Høiland-Jørgensen1-0/+3
Instead of just having an airtime flag in debugfs, turn AQL into a proper NL80211_EXT_FEATURE, so drivers can turn it on when they are ready, and so we also expose the presence of the feature to userspace. This also has the effect of flipping the default, so drivers have to opt in to using AQL instead of getting it by default with TXQs. To keep functionality the same as pre-patch, we set this feature for ath10k (which is where it is needed the most). While we're at it, split out the debugfs interface so AQL gets its own per-station debugfs file instead of using the 'airtime' file. [Johannes:] This effectively disables AQL for iwlwifi, where it fixes a number of issues: * TSO in iwlwifi is causing underflows and associated warnings in AQL * HE (802.11ax) rates aren't reported properly so at HE rates, AQL could never have a valid estimate (it'd use 6 Mbps instead of up to 2400!) 2019-11-22mac80211: Implement Airtime-based Queue Limit (AQL)Kan Yan1-0/+38
In order for the Fq_CoDel algorithm integrated in mac80211 layer to operate effectively to control excessive queueing latency, the CoDel algorithm requires an accurate measure of how long packets stays in the queue, AKA sojourn time. The sojourn time measured at the mac80211 layer doesn't include queueing latency in the lower layer (firmware/hardware) and CoDel expects lower layer to have a short queue. However, most 802.11ac chipsets offload tasks such TX aggregation to firmware or hardware, thus have a deep lower layer queue. Without a mechanism to control the lower layer queue size, packets only stay in mac80211 layer transiently before being sent to firmware queue. As a result, the sojourn time measured by CoDel in the mac80211 layer is almost always lower than the CoDel latency target, hence CoDel does little to control the latency, even when the lower layer queue causes excessive latency. The Byte Queue Limits (BQL) mechanism is commonly used to address the similar issue with wired network interface. However, this method cannot be applied directly to the wireless network interface. "Bytes" is not a suitable measure of queue depth in the wireless network, as the data rate can vary dramatically from station to station in the same network, from a few Mbps to over Gbps. This patch implements an Airtime-based Queue Limit (AQL) to make CoDel work effectively with wireless drivers that utilized firmware/hardware offloading. AQL allows each txq to release just enough packets to the lower layer to form 1-2 large aggregations to keep hardware fully utilized and retains the rest of the frames in mac80211 layer to be controlled by the CoDel algorithm. 2019-09-11mac80211: Do not send Layer 2 Update frame before authorizationJouni Malinen1-0/+4
The Layer 2 Update frame is used to update bridges when a station roams to another AP even if that STA does not transmit any frames after the reassociation. This behavior was described in IEEE Std 802.11F-2003 as something that would happen based on MLME-ASSOCIATE.indication, i.e., before completing 4-way handshake. However, this IEEE trial-use recommended practice document was published before RSN (IEEE Std 802.11i-2004) and as such, did not consider RSN use cases. Furthermore, IEEE Std 802.11F-2003 was withdrawn in 2006 and as such, has not been maintained amd should not be used anymore. Sending out the Layer 2 Update frame immediately after association is fine for open networks (and also when using SAE, FT protocol, or FILS authentication when the station is actually authenticated by the time association completes). However, it is not appropriate for cases where RSN is used with PSK or EAP authentication since the station is actually fully authenticated only once the 4-way handshake completes after authentication and attackers might be able to use the unauthenticated triggering of Layer 2 Update frame transmission to disrupt bridge behavior. Fix this by postponing transmission of the Layer 2 Update frame from station entry addition to the point when the station entry is marked authorized. Similarly, send out the VLAN binding update only if the STA entry has already been authorized. 2019-06-14mac80211: use STA info in rate_control_send_low()Johannes Berg1-1/+42
Even if we have a station, we currently call rate_control_send_low() with the NULL station unless further rate control (driver, minstrel) has been initialized. Change this so we can use more information about the station to use a better rate. For example, when we associate with an AP, we will now use the lowest rate it advertised as supported (that we can) rather than the lowest mandatory rate. This aligns our behaviour with most other 802.11 implementations. To make this possible, we need to also ensure that we have non-zero rates at all times, so in case we really have *nothing* pre-fill the supp_rates bitmap with the very lowest mandatory bitmap (11b and 11a on 2.4 and 5 GHz respectively). Additionally, hostapd appears to be giving us an empty supported rates bitmap (it can and should do better, since the STA must have supported for at least the basic rates in the BSS), so ignore any such bitmaps that would actually zero out the supp_rates, and in that case just keep the pre-filled mandatory rates. 2019-01-19mac80211: Add airtime accounting and scheduling to TXQsToke Høiland-Jørgensen1-3/+41
This adds airtime accounting and scheduling to the mac80211 TXQ scheduler. A new callback, ieee80211_sta_register_airtime(), is added that drivers can call to report airtime usage for stations. When airtime information is present, mac80211 will schedule TXQs (through ieee80211_next_txq()) in a way that enforces airtime fairness between active stations. This scheduling works the same way as the ath9k in-driver airtime fairness scheduling. If no airtime usage is reported by the driver, the scheduler will default to round-robin scheduling. For drivers that don't control TXQ scheduling in software, a new API function, ieee80211_txq_may_transmit(), is added which the driver can use to check if the TXQ is eligible for transmission, or should be throttled to enforce fairness. Calls to this function must also be enclosed in ieee80211_txq_schedule_{start,end}() calls to ensure proper locking. The API ieee80211_txq_may_transmit() also ensures that TXQ list will be aligned aginst driver's own round-robin scheduler list. i.e it rotates the TXQ list till it makes the requested node becomes the first entry in TXQ list. Thus both the TXQ list and driver's list are in sync. 2019-01-19mac80211: Add TXQ scheduling APIToke Høiland-Jørgensen1-1/+1
This adds an API to mac80211 to handle scheduling of TXQs. The interface between driver and mac80211 for TXQ handling is changed by adding two new functions: ieee80211_next_txq(), which will return the next TXQ to schedule in the current round-robin rotation, and ieee80211_return_txq(), which the driver uses to indicate that it has finished scheduling a TXQ (which will then be put back in the scheduling rotation if it isn't empty). The driver must call ieee80211_txq_schedule_start() at the start of each scheduling session, and ieee80211_txq_schedule_end() at the end. The API then guarantees that the same TXQ is not returned twice in the same session (so a driver can loop on ieee80211_next_txq() without worrying about breaking the loop. Usage of the new API is optional, so drivers can be ported one at a time. In this patch, the actual scheduling performed by mac80211 is simple round-robin, but a subsequent commit adds airtime fairness awareness to the scheduler. 2018-11-09{nl,mac}80211: report gate connectivity in station infoBob Copeland1-1/+3
Capture the current state of gate connectivity from the mesh formation field in mesh config whenever we receive a beacon, and report that via GET_STATION. This allows applications doing mesh peering in userspace to make peering decisions based on peers' current upstream connectivity. 2018-11-09mac80211: sta_info: avoid tidstats variable shadowingJohannes Berg1-5/+2

2018-09-05mac80211: add an optional TXQ for other PS-buffered framesJohannes Berg1-8/+13

2018-08-29cfg80211: clarify frames covered by average ACK signal reportBalaji Pothunoori1-3/+3
Modify the API to include all ACK frames in average ACK signal strength reporting, not just ACKs for data frames. Make exposing the data conditional on implementing the extended feature flag. This is how it was really implemented in mac80211, update the code there to use the new defines and clean up some of the setting code. Keep nl80211.h source compatibility by keeping the old names. 2018-06-29mac80211: use BIT_ULL for NL80211_STA_INFO_* attribute typesOmer Efrat1-42/+42
The BIT macro uses unsigned long which some architectures handle as 32 bit and therefore might cause macro's shift to overflow when used on a value equals or larger than 32 (NL80211_STA_INFO_RX_DURATION and afterwards). Since 'filled' member in station_info changed to u64, BIT_ULL macro should be used with all NL80211_STA_INFO_* attribute types instead of BIT to prevent future possible bugs when one will use BIT macro for higher attributes by mistake. This commit cleans up all usages of BIT macro with the above field in mac80211 by changing it to BIT_ULL instead. 2018-05-18cfg80211: dynamically allocate per-tid stats for station infoArend van Spriel1-4/+5
With the addition of TXQ stats in the per-tid statistics the struct station_info grew significantly. This resulted in stack size warnings due to the structure itself being above the limit for the warnings. Add an allocation function that those who want to provide per-tid stats should use to allocate the tid array, i.e. struct station_info::pertid.
