2018-08-13l2tp: fix unused function warningArnd Bergmann1-5/+2
Removing one of the callers of pppol2tp_session_get_sock caused a harmless warning in some configurations: net/l2tp/l2tp_ppp.c:142:21: 'pppol2tp_session_get_sock' defined but not used [-Wunused-function] Rather than adding another #ifdef here, using a proper IS_ENABLED() check makes the code more readable and avoids those warnings while letting the compiler figure out for itself which code is needed. This adds one pointer for the unused show() callback in struct l2tp_session, but that seems harmless. 2018-08-03l2tp: ignore L2TP_ATTR_MTUGuillaume Nault1-10/+7
This attribute's handling is broken. It can only be used when creating Ethernet pseudo-wires, in which case its value can be used as the initial MTU for the l2tpeth device. However, when handling update requests, L2TP_ATTR_MTU only modifies session->mtu. This value is never propagated to the l2tpeth device. Dump requests also return the value of session->mtu, which is not synchronised anymore with the device MTU. The same problem occurs if the device MTU is properly updated using the generic IFLA_MTU attribute. In this case, session->mtu is not updated, and L2TP_ATTR_MTU will report an invalid value again when dumping the session. It does not seem worthwhile to complexify l2tp_eth.c to synchronise session->mtu with the device MTU. Even the ip-l2tp manpage advises to use 'ip link' to initialise the MTU of l2tpeth devices (iproute2 does not handle L2TP_ATTR_MTU at all anyway). So let's just ignore it entirely. 2017-10-29l2tp: initialise l2tp_eth sessions before registering themGuillaume Nault1-31/+75
Sessions must be initialised before being made externally visible by l2tp_session_register(). Otherwise the session may be concurrently deleted before being initialised, which can confuse the deletion path and eventually lead to kernel oops. Therefore, we need to move l2tp_session_register() down in l2tp_eth_create(), but also handle the intermediate step where only the session or the netdevice has been registered. We can't just call l2tp_session_register() in ->ndo_init() because we'd have no way to properly undo this operation in ->ndo_uninit(). Instead, let's register the session and the netdevice in two different steps and protect the session's device pointer with RCU. And now that we allow the session's .dev field to be NULL, we don't need to prevent the netdevice from being removed anymore. So we can drop the dev_hold() and dev_put() calls in l2tp_eth_create() and l2tp_eth_dev_uninit(). 2017-10-29l2tp: don't register sessions in l2tp_session_create()Guillaume Nault1-0/+9
Sessions created by l2tp_session_create() aren't fully initialised: some pseudo-wire specific operations need to be done before making the session usable. Therefore the PPP and Ethernet pseudo-wires continue working on the returned l2tp session while it's already been exposed to the rest of the system. This can lead to various issues. In particular, the session may enter the deletion process before having been fully initialised, which will confuse the session removal code. This patch moves session registration out of l2tp_session_create(), so that callers can control when the session is exposed to the rest of the system. This is done by the new l2tp_session_register() function. Only pppol2tp_session_create() can be easily converted to avoid modifying its session after registration (the debug message is dropped in order to avoid the need for holding a reference on the session). For pppol2tp_connect() and l2tp_eth_create()), more work is needed. That'll be done in followup patches. For now, let's just register the session right after its creation, like it was done before. The only difference is that we can easily take a reference on the session before registering it, so, at least, we're sure it's not going to be freed while we're working on it. 2017-10-01l2tp: fix l2tp_eth module loadingGuillaume Nault1-49/+2
The l2tp_eth module crashes if its netlink callbacks are run when the pernet data aren't initialised. We should normally register_pernet_device() before the genl callbacks. However, the pernet data only maintain a list of l2tpeth interfaces, and this list is never used. So let's just drop pernet handling instead. 2017-09-03l2tp: pass tunnel pointer to ->session_create()Guillaume Nault1-8/+3
Using l2tp_tunnel_find() in pppol2tp_session_create() and l2tp_eth_create() is racy, because no reference is held on the returned session. These functions are only used to implement the ->session_create callback which is run by l2tp_nl_cmd_session_create(). Therefore searching for the parent tunnel isn't necessary because l2tp_nl_cmd_session_create() already has a pointer to it and holds a reference. This patch modifies ->session_create()'s prototype to directly pass the the parent tunnel as parameter, thus avoiding searching for it in pppol2tp_session_create() and l2tp_eth_create(). Since we have to touch the ->session_create() call in l2tp_nl_cmd_session_create(), let's also remove the useless conditional: we know that ->session_create isn't NULL at this point because it's already been checked earlier in this same function. Finally, one might be tempted to think that the removed l2tp_tunnel_find() calls were harmless because they would return the same tunnel as the one held by l2tp_nl_cmd_session_create() anyway. But that tunnel might be removed and a new one created with same tunnel Id before the l2tp_tunnel_find() call. In this case l2tp_tunnel_find() would return the new tunnel which wouldn't be protected by the reference held by l2tp_nl_cmd_session_create(). This fixes a counter problem on 32bit systems: When the rx_bytes counter reached 2 GiB, it jumpd to (2^64 Bytes - 2GiB) Bytes. rtnl_link_stats64 has __u64 type and atomic_long_read returns atomic_long_t which is signed. 2017-06-07net: Fix inconsistent teardown and release of private netdev state.David S. Miller1-1/+1
Network devices can allocate reasources and private memory using netdev_ops->ndo_init(). However, the release of these resources can occur in one of two different places. Either netdev_ops->ndo_uninit() or netdev->destructor(). The decision of which operation frees the resources depends upon whether it is necessary for all netdev refs to be released before it is safe to perform the freeing. netdev_ops->ndo_uninit() presumably can occur right after the NETDEV_UNREGISTER notifier completes and the unicast and multicast address lists are flushed. netdev->destructor(), on the other hand, does not run until the netdev references all go away. Further complicating the situation is that netdev->destructor() almost universally does also a free_netdev(). This creates a problem for the logic in register_netdevice(). Because all callers of register_netdevice() manage the freeing of the netdev, and invoke free_netdev(dev) if register_netdevice() fails. If netdev_ops->ndo_init() succeeds, but something else fails inside of register_netdevice(), it does call ndo_ops->ndo_uninit(). But it is not able to invoke netdev->destructor(). This is because netdev->destructor() will do a free_netdev() and then the caller of register_netdevice() will do the same. However, this means that the resources that would normally be released by netdev->destructor() will not be. Over the years drivers have added local hacks to deal with this, by invoking their destructor parts by hand when register_netdevice() fails. Many drivers do not try to deal with this, and instead we have leaks. Let's close this hole by formalizing the distinction between what private things need to be freed up by netdev->destructor() and whether the driver needs unregister_netdevice() to perform the free_netdev(). netdev->priv_destructor() performs all actions to free up the private resources that used to be freed by netdev->destructor(), except for free_netdev(). netdev->needs_free_netdev is a boolean that indicates whether free_netdev() should be done at the end of unregister_netdevice(). Now, register_netdevice() can sanely release all resources after ndo_ops->ndo_init() succeeds, by invoking both ndo_ops->ndo_uninit() and netdev->priv_destructor(). And at the end of unregister_netdevice(), we invoke netdev->priv_destructor() and optionally call free_netdev(). Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>

2017-04-17l2tp: device MTU setup, tunnel socket needs a lockR. Parameswaran1-0/+2
The MTU overhead calculation in L2TP device set-up merged via commit b784e7ebfce8cfb16c6f95e14e8532d0768ab7ff needs to be adjusted to lock the tunnel socket while referencing the sub-data structures to derive the socket's IP overhead. 2017-04-06L2TP:Adjust intf MTU, add underlay L3, L2 hdrs.R. Parameswaran1-4/+51
Existing L2TP kernel code does not derive the optimal MTU for Ethernet pseudowires and instead leaves this to a userspace L2TP daemon or operator. If an MTU is not specified, the existing kernel code chooses an MTU that does not take account of all tunnel header overheads, which can lead to unwanted IP fragmentation. When L2TP is used without a control plane (userspace daemon), we would prefer that the kernel does a better job of choosing a default pseudowire MTU, taking account of all tunnel header overheads, including IP header options, if any. This patch addresses this. Change-set here uses the new kernel function, kernel_sock_ip_overhead(), to factor the outer IP overhead on the L2TP tunnel socket (including IP Options, if any) when calculating the default MTU for an Ethernet pseudowire, along with consideration of the inner Ethernet header. 2017-04-01l2tp: fix duplicate session creationGuillaume Nault1-8/+2
l2tp_session_create() relies on its caller for checking for duplicate sessions. This is racy since a session can be concurrently inserted after the caller's verification. Fix this by letting l2tp_session_create() verify sessions uniqueness upon insertion. Callers need to be adapted to check for l2tp_session_create()'s return code instead of calling l2tp_session_find(). pppol2tp_connect() is a bit special because it has to work on existing sessions (if they're not connected) or to create a new session if none is found. When acting on a preexisting session, a reference must be held or it could go away on us. So we have to use l2tp_session_get() instead of l2tp_session_find() and drop the reference before exiting. All conflicts were simple overlapping changes except perhaps for the Thunder driver. That driver has a change_mtu method explicitly for sending a message to the hardware. If that fails it returns an error. Normally a driver doesn't need an ndo_change_mtu method becuase those are usually just range changes, which are now handled generically. But since this extra operation is needed in the Thunder driver, it has to stay. However, if the message send fails we have to restore the original MTU before the change because the entire call chain expects that if an error is thrown by ndo_change_mtu then the MTU did not change. Therefore code is added to nicvf_change_mtu to remember the original MTU, and to restore it upon nicvf_update_hw_max_frs() failue. Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>

When creating an L2TPv3 Ethernet session, if register_netdev() should fail for any reason (for example, automatic naming for "l2tpeth%d" interfaces hits the 32k-interface limit), the netdev is freed in the error path. (So same fixes are probably needed on non LLTX stacked drivers) Noticed while stressing L2TPV3 setup : ====================================================== [ INFO: possible circular locking dependency detected ] 3.6.0-rc3+ #788 Not tainted ------------------------------------------------------- netperf/4660 is trying to acquire lock: (l2tpsock){+.-...}, at: [<ffffffffa0208db2>] l2tp_xmit_skb+0x172/0xa50 [l2tp_core] but task is already holding lock: (&(&sch->busylock)->rlock){+.-...}, at: [<ffffffff81596595>] dev_queue_xmit+0xd75/0xe00 which lock already depends on the new lock. the existing dependency chain (in reverse order) is: -> #1 (&(&sch->busylock)->rlock){+.-...}: [<ffffffff810a5df0>] lock_acquire+0x90/0x200 [<ffffffff817499fc>] _raw_spin_lock_irqsave+0x4c/0x60 [<ffffffff81074872>] __wake_up+0x32/0x70 [<ffffffff8136d39e>] tty_wakeup+0x3e/0x80 [<ffffffff81378fb3>] pty_write+0x73/0x80 [<ffffffff8136cb4c>] tty_put_char+0x3c/0x40 [<ffffffff813722b2>] process_echoes+0x142/0x330 [<ffffffff813742ab>] n_tty_receive_buf+0x8fb/0x1230 [<ffffffff813777b2>] flush_to_ldisc+0x142/0x1c0 [<ffffffff81062818>] process_one_work+0x198/0x760 [<ffffffff81063236>] worker_thread+0x186/0x4b0 [<ffffffff810694d3>] kthread+0x93/0xa0 [<ffffffff81753e24>] kernel_thread_helper+0x4/0x10 -> #0 (l2tpsock){+.-...}: [<ffffffff810a5288>] __lock_acquire+0x1628/0x1b10 [<ffffffff810a5df0>] lock_acquire+0x90/0x200 [<ffffffff817498c1>] _raw_spin_lock+0x41/0x50 [<ffffffffa0208db2>] l2tp_xmit_skb+0x172/0xa50 [l2tp_core] [<ffffffffa021a802>] l2tp_eth_dev_xmit+0x32/0x60 [l2tp_eth] [<ffffffff815952b2>] dev_hard_start_xmit+0x502/0xa70 [<ffffffff815b63ce>] sch_direct_xmit+0xfe/0x290 [<ffffffff81595a05>] dev_queue_xmit+0x1e5/0xe00 [<ffffffff815d9d60>] ip_finish_output+0x3d0/0x890 [<ffffffff815db019>] ip_output+0x59/0xf0 [<ffffffff815da36d>] ip_local_out+0x2d/0xa0 [<ffffffff815da5a3>] ip_queue_xmit+0x1c3/0x680 [<ffffffff815f4192>] tcp_transmit_skb+0x402/0xa60 [<ffffffff815f4a94>] tcp_write_xmit+0x1f4/0xa30 [<ffffffff815f5300>] tcp_push_one+0x30/0x40 [<ffffffff815e6672>] tcp_sendmsg+0xe82/0x1040 [<ffffffff81614495>] inet_sendmsg+0x125/0x230 [<ffffffff81576cdc>] sock_sendmsg+0xdc/0xf0 [<ffffffff81579ece>] sys_sendto+0xfe/0x130 [<ffffffff81752c92>] system_call_fastpath+0x16/0x1b Possible unsafe locking scenario: CPU0 CPU1 ---- ---- lock(&(&sch->busylock)->rlock); lock(l2tpsock); lock(&(&sch->busylock)->rlock); lock(l2tpsock); *** DEADLOCK *** 5 locks held by netperf/4660: #0: (sk_lock-AF_INET){+.+.+.}, at: [<ffffffff815e581c>] tcp_sendmsg+0x2c/0x1040 #1: (rcu_read_lock){.+.+..}, at: [<ffffffff815da3e0>] ip_queue_xmit+0x0/0x680 #2: (rcu_read_lock_bh){.+....}, at: [<ffffffff815d9ac5>] ip_finish_output+0x135/0x890 #3: (rcu_read_lock_bh){.+....}, at: [<ffffffff81595820>] dev_queue_xmit+0x0/0xe00 #4: (&(&sch->busylock)->rlock){+.-...}, at: [<ffffffff81596595>] dev_queue_xmit+0xd75/0xe00 stack backtrace: Pid: 4660, comm: netperf Not tainted 3.6.0-rc3+ #788 Call Trace: [<ffffffff8173dbf8>] print_circular_bug+0x1fb/0x20c [<ffffffff810a5288>] __lock_acquire+0x1628/0x1b10 [<ffffffff810a334b>] ? close https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16529 Before calling dev_forward_skb(), we should make sure skb head contains at least an ethernet header, even if length included in upper layer said so. Use pskb_may_pull() to make sure this ethernet header is present in skb head. Since .size is set properly in "struct pernet_operations l2tp_eth_net_ops", allocating space for "struct l2tp_eth_net" by hand is not correct, even causes memory leakage. Signed-off-by: Jiri Pirko <jpirko@redhat.com> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>

2010-04-03l2tp: Add debugfs files for dumping l2tp debug infoJames Chapman1-0/+14
The existing pppol2tp driver exports debug info to /proc/net/pppol2tp. Rather than adding info to that file for the new functionality added in this patch series, we add new files in debugfs, leaving the old /proc file for backwards compatibility (L2TPv2 only). Currently only one file is provided: l2tp/tunnels, which lists internal debug info for all l2tp tunnels and sessions. More files may be added later. The info is for debug and problem analysis only - userspace apps should use netlink to obtain status about l2tp tunnels and sessions. Although debugfs does not support net namespaces, the tunnels and sessions dumped in l2tp/tunnels are only those in the net namespace of the process reading the file. 2010-04-03l2tp: Add L2TP ethernet pseudowire supportJames Chapman1-0/+347
This driver presents a regular net_device for each L2TP ethernet pseudowire instance. These interfaces are named l2tpethN by default, though userspace can specify an alternative name when the L2TP session is created, if preferred. When the pseudowire is established, regular Linux networking utilities may be used to configure the interface, i.e. give it IP address info or add it to a bridge. Any data passed over the interface is carried over an L2TP tunnel. Signed-off-by: James Chapman <jchapman@katalix.com> Reviewed-by: Randy Dunlap <randy.dunlap@oracle.com> Signed-off-by: David S.
