The commit b37a46683739 ("netdevice: add the case if dev is NULL") changed
the way how the NULL check for net_devices have to be handled when trying
to reduce its reference counter. Before this commit, it was the
responsibility of the caller to check whether the object is NULL or not.
But it was changed to behave more like kfree. Now the callee has to handle
the NULL-case.
The batman-adv code was scanned via cocinelle for similar places. These
were changed to use the paradigm

The batadv_dhcp_packet is used to read in parts of the DHCP packet and
extract relevant information for the distributed arp table. But the
structure contained the flexible member "options" which is no where used in
the code.
A sizeof on this kind of type would return the size of everything except
the flexible member. But sparse will detect this kind of sizeof and warn
with
warning: using sizeof on a flexible structure
This can be avoided by dropping the unused flexible member.

The batman-adv source code was using the year of publication (to net-next)
as "last" year for the copyright statement. The whole source code mentioned
in the MAINTAINERS "BATMAN ADVANCED" section was handled as a single entity
regarding the publishing year.
This avoided having outdated (in sense of year information - not copyright
holder) publishing information inside several files. But since the simple
"update copyright year" commit (without other changes) in the file was not
well received in the upstream kernel, the option to not have a copyright
year (for initial and last publication) in the files are chosen instead.
More detailed information about the years can still be retrieved from the
SCM system.

The current codebase makes use of the zero-length array language
extension to the C90 standard, but the preferred mechanism to declare
variable-length types such as these ones is a flexible array member[1][2],
introduced in C99:
struct foo {
int stuff;
struct boo array[];
};
By making use of the mechanism above, we will get a compiler warning
in case the flexible array does not occur last in the structure, which
will help us prevent some kind of undefined behavior bugs from being
inadvertently introduced[3] to the codebase from now on.
Also, notice that, dynamic memory allocations won't be affected by
this change:
"Flexible array members have incomplete type, and so the sizeof operator
may not be applied. As a quirk of the original implementation of
zero-length arrays, sizeof evaluates to zero."[1]
This issue was found with the help of Coccinelle.

The sparse commit 6002ded74587 ("add a flag to warn on casts to/from
bitwise pointers") introduced a check for non-direct casts from/to
restricted datatypes (when -Wbitwise-pointer is enabled).
This triggered various warnings in batman-adv when some (already big
endian) buffer content was casted to/from the corresponding big endian
integer data types. But these were correct and can therefore be marked with
__force to signalize sparse an intended cast from/to a bitwise type.

The distributed arp table is using a DHT to store and retrieve MAC address
information for an IP address. This is done using unicast messages to
selected peers. The potential peers are looked up using the IP address and
the VID.
While the IP address is always stored in big endian byte order, this is not
the case of the VID. It can (depending on the host system) either be big
endian or little endian. The host must therefore always convert it to big
endian to ensure that all devices calculate the same peers for the same
lookup data.

Currently incoming ARP Replies, for example via a DHT-PUT message, do
not update the timeout for an already existing DAT entry. These ARP
Replies are dropped instead.
This however defeats the purpose of the DHCPACK snooping, for instance.
Right now, a DAT entry in the DHT will be purged every five minutes,
likely leading to a mesh-wide ARP Request broadcast after this timeout.
Which then recreates the entry. The idea of the DHCPACK snooping is to
be able to update an entry before a timeout happens, to avoid ARP Request
flooding.
This patch fixes this issue by updating a DAT entry on incoming
ARP Replies even if a matching DAT entry already exists. While still
filtering the ARP Reply towards the soft-interface, to avoid duplicate
messages on the client device side.

The send functions in batman-adv are expected to consume the skb when
either the data is queued up for the underlying driver or when some
precondition failed. batadv_dat_send_data didn't do this and instead
created a copy of the skb, modified it and queued the copy up for
transmission. The caller has to take care that the skb is handled correctly
(for example free'd) when batadv_dat_send_data returns.
This unclear behavior already lead to memory leaks in the recent past.
Renaming the function to batadv_dat_forward_data should make it easier to
identify that the data is forwarded but the skb is not actually
send+consumed.

batadv_dat_put_dhcp is creating a new ARP packet via
batadv_dat_arp_create_reply and tries to forward it via
batadv_dat_send_data to different peers in the DHT. The original skb is not
consumed by batadv_dat_send_data and thus has to be consumed by the caller.

In a 1000 nodes mesh network (Freifunk Hamburg) we can still see
30KBit/s of ARP traffic (equalling about 25% of all layer two
specific overhead, remaining after some filtering) flooded through
the mesh. These 30KBit/s are mainly ARP Requests from the
gateways / DHCP servers.
By snooping DHCPACKs we can learn about MAC/IP address pairs
in the DHCP range without relying on ARP. This patch is in preparation
to eliminate the need for mesh wide message flooding for IPv4 address
resolution.
Also this allows to quickly update a MAC/IP pair at least in the DHT when
DHCP reassigns an IP address to a new host.

The netlink dump functionality transfers a large number of entries from the
kernel to userspace. It is rather likely that the transfer has to
interrupted and later continued. During that time, it can happen that
either new entries are added or removed. The userspace could than either
receive some entries multiple times or miss entries.
Commit 670dc2833d14 ("netlink: advertise incomplete dumps") introduced a
mechanism to inform userspace about this problem. Userspace can then decide
whether it is necessary or not to retry dumping the information again.
The netlink dump functions have to be switched to exclusive locks to avoid
changes while the current message is prepared. The already existing
generation sequence counter from the hash helper can be used for this
simple hash.

Fun set of conflict resolutions here...
For the mac80211 stuff, these were fortunately just parallel
adds. Trivially resolved.
In drivers/net/phy/phy.c we had a bug fix in 'net' that moved the
function phy_disable_interrupts() earlier in the file, whilst in
'net-next' the phy_error() call from this function was removed.
In net/ipv4/xfrm4_policy.c, David Ahern's changes to remove the
'rt_table_id' member of rtable collided with a bug fix in 'net' that
added a new struct member "rt_mtu_locked" which needs to be copied
over here.
The mlxsw driver conflict consisted of net-next separating
the span code and definitions into separate files, whilst
a 'net' bug fix made some changes to that moved code.
The mlx5 infiniband conflict resolution was quite non-trivial,
the RDMA tree's merge commit was used as a guide here, and
here are their notes:
====================
Due to bug fixes found by the syzkaller bot and taken into the for-rc
branch after development for the 4.17 merge window had already started
being taken into the for-next branch, there were fairly non-trivial
merge issues that would need to be resolved between the for-rc branch
and the for-next branch. This merge resolves those conflicts and
provides a unified base upon which ongoing development for 4.17 can
be based.
Conflicts:
drivers/infiniband/hw/mlx5/main.c - Commit 42cea83f9524
(IB/mlx5: Fix cleanup order on unload) added to for-rc and
commit b5ca15ad7e61 (IB/mlx5: Add proper representors support)
add as part of the devel cycle both needed to modify the
init/de-init functions used by mlx5. To support the new
representors, the new functions added by the cleanup patch
needed to be made non-static, and the init/de-init list
added by the representors patch needed to be modified to
match the init/de-init list changes made by the cleanup
patch.
Updates:
drivers/infiniband/hw/mlx5/mlx5_ib.h - Update function
prototypes added by representors patch to reflect new function
names as changed by cleanup patch
drivers/infiniband/hw/mlx5/ib_rep.c - Update init/de-init
stage list to match new order from cleanup patch

If none of the backbone gateways in a bla setup has already knowledge of
the mac address searched for in an incoming ARP request from the backbone
an address resolution via the DHT of DAT is started. The gateway can send
several ARP requests to different DHT nodes and therefore can get several
replies. This patch assures that not all of the possible ARP replies are
returned to the backbone by checking the local DAT cache of the gateway.
If there is an entry in the local cache the gateway has already learned
the requested address and there is no need to forward the additional reply
to the backbone.
Furthermore it is checked if this gateway has claimed the source of the ARP
reply and only forwards it to the backbone if it has claimed the source or
if there is no claim at all.

The network stack no longer uses the last_rx member of struct net_device
since the bonding driver switched to use its own private last_rx in
commit 9f242738376d ("bonding: use last_arp_rx in slave_last_rx()").
However, some drivers still (ab)use the field for their own purposes and
some driver just update it without actually using it.
Previously, there was an accompanying comment for the last_rx member
added in commit 4dc89133f49b ("net: add a comment on netdev->last_rx")
which asked drivers not to update is, unless really needed. However,
this commend was removed in commit f8ff080dacec ("bonding: remove
useless updating of slave->dev->last_rx"), so some drivers added later
on still did update last_rx.
Remove all usage of last_rx and switch three drivers (sky2, atp and
smc91c92_cs) which actually read and write it to use their own private
copy in netdev_priv.

lines). Moving it to a separate file makes it better visible as a main
component of the batman-adv implementation and hides it less in the other
helper functions in main.c
