2018-06-12treewide: Use array_size() in vmalloc()Kees Cook1-3/+3
The vmalloc() function has no 2-factor argument form, so multiplication factors need to be wrapped in array_size(). This patch replaces cases of: vmalloc(a * b) with: vmalloc(array_size(a, b)) as well as handling cases of: vmalloc(a * b * c) with: vmalloc(array3_size(a, b, c)) This does, however, attempt to ignore constant size factors like: vmalloc(4 * 1024) though any constants defined via macros get caught up in the conversion. Any factors with a sizeof() of "unsigned char", "char", and "u8" were dropped, since they're redundant. The Coccinelle script used for this was: // Fix redundant parens around sizeof(). @@ type TYPE; expression THING, E; @@ ( vmalloc( - (sizeof(TYPE)) * E + sizeof(TYPE) * E , ...) | vmalloc( - (sizeof(THING)) * E + sizeof(THING) * E , ...) ) // Drop single-byte sizes and redundant parens. @@ expression COUNT; typedef u8; typedef __u8; @@ ( vmalloc( - sizeof(u8) * (COUNT) + COUNT , ...) | vmalloc( - sizeof(__u8) * (COUNT) + COUNT , ...) | vmalloc( - sizeof(char) * (COUNT) + COUNT , ...) | vmalloc( - sizeof(unsigned char) * (COUNT) + COUNT , ...) | vmalloc( - sizeof(u8) * COUNT + COUNT , ...) | vmalloc( - sizeof(__u8) * COUNT + COUNT , ...) | vmalloc( - sizeof(char) * COUNT + COUNT , ...) | vmalloc( - sizeof(unsigned char) * COUNT + COUNT , ...) ) // 2-factor product with sizeof(type/expression) and identifier or constant. @@ type TYPE; expression THING; identifier COUNT_ID; constant COUNT_CONST; @@ ( vmalloc( - sizeof(TYPE) * (COUNT_ID) + array_size(COUNT_ID, sizeof(TYPE)) , ...) | vmalloc( - sizeof(TYPE) * COUNT_ID + array_size(COUNT_ID, sizeof(TYPE)) , ...) | vmalloc( - sizeof(TYPE) * (COUNT_CONST) + array_size(COUNT_CONST, sizeof(TYPE)) , ...) | vmalloc( - sizeof(TYPE) * COUNT_CONST + array_size(COUNT_CONST, sizeof(TYPE)) , ...) | vmalloc( - sizeof(THING) * (COUNT_ID) + array_size(COUNT_ID, sizeof(THING)) , ...) | vmalloc( - sizeof(THING) * COUNT_ID + array_size(COUNT_ID, sizeof(THING)) , ...) | vmalloc( - sizeof(THING) * (COUNT_CONST) + array_size(COUNT_CONST, sizeof(THING)) , ...) | vmalloc( - sizeof(THING) * COUNT_CONST + array_size(COUNT_CONST, sizeof(THING)) , ...) ) // 2-factor product, only identifiers. @@ identifier SIZE, COUNT; @@ vmalloc( - SIZE * COUNT + array_size(COUNT, SIZE) , ...) // 3-factor product with 1 sizeof(type) or sizeof(expression), with // redundant parens removed. @@ expression THING; identifier STRIDE, COUNT; type TYPE; @@ ( vmalloc( - sizeof(TYPE) * (COUNT) * (STRIDE) + array3_size(COUNT, STRIDE, sizeof(TYPE)) , ...) | vmalloc( - sizeof(TYPE) * (COUNT) * STRIDE + array3_size(COUNT, STRIDE, sizeof(TYPE)) , ...) | vmalloc( - sizeof(TYPE) * COUNT * (STRIDE) + array3_size(COUNT, STRIDE, sizeof(TYPE)) , ...) | vmalloc( - sizeof(TYPE) * COUNT * STRIDE + array3_size(COUNT, STRIDE, sizeof(TYPE)) , ...) | vmalloc( - sizeof(THING) * (COUNT) * (STRIDE) + array3_size(COUNT, STRIDE, sizeof(THING)) , ...) | vmalloc( - sizeof(THING) * (COUNT) * STRIDE + array3_size(COUNT, STRIDE, sizeof(THING)) , ...) | vmalloc( - sizeof(THING) * COUNT * (STRIDE) + array3_size(COUNT, STRIDE, sizeof(THING)) , ...) | vmalloc( - sizeof(THING) * COUNT * STRIDE + array3_size(COUNT, STRIDE, sizeof(THING)) , ...) ) // 3-factor product with 2 sizeof(variable), with redundant parens removed. @@ expression THING1, THING2; identifier COUNT; type TYPE1, TYPE2; @@ ( vmalloc( - sizeof(TYPE1) * sizeof(TYPE2) * COUNT + array3_size(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE1), sizeof(TYPE2)) , ...) | vmalloc( - sizeof(TYPE1) * sizeof(THING2) * (COUNT) + array3_size(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE1), sizeof(TYPE2)) , ...) | vmalloc( - sizeof(THING1) * sizeof(THING2) * COUNT + array3_size(COUNT, sizeof(THING1), sizeof(THING2)) , ...) | vmalloc( - sizeof(THING1) * sizeof(THING2) * (COUNT) + array3_size(COUNT, sizeof(THING1), sizeof(THING2)) , ...) | vmalloc( - sizeof(TYPE1) * sizeof(THING2) * COUNT + array3_size(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE1), sizeof(THING2)) , ...) | vmalloc( - sizeof(TYPE1) * sizeof(THING2) * (COUNT) + array3_size(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE1), sizeof(THING2)) , ...) ) // 3-factor product, only identifiers, with redundant parens removed. @@ identifier STRIDE, SIZE, COUNT; @@ ( vmalloc( - (COUNT) * STRIDE * SIZE + array3_size(COUNT, STRIDE, SIZE) , ...) | vmalloc( - COUNT * (STRIDE) * SIZE + array3_size(COUNT, STRIDE, SIZE) , ...) | vmalloc( - COUNT * STRIDE * (SIZE) + array3_size(COUNT, STRIDE, SIZE) , ...) | vmalloc( - (COUNT) * (STRIDE) * SIZE + array3_size(COUNT, STRIDE, SIZE) , ...) | vmalloc( - COUNT * (STRIDE) * (SIZE) + array3_size(COUNT, STRIDE, SIZE) , ...) | vmalloc( - (COUNT) * STRIDE * (SIZE) + array3_size(COUNT, STRIDE, SIZE) , ...) | vmalloc( - (COUNT) * (STRIDE) * (SIZE) + array3_size(COUNT, STRIDE, SIZE) , ...) | vmalloc( - COUNT * STRIDE * SIZE + array3_size(COUNT, STRIDE, SIZE) , ...) ) // Any remaining multi-factor products, first at least 3-factor products // when they're not all constants... @@ expression E1, E2, E3; constant C1, C2, C3; @@ ( vmalloc(C1 * C2 * C3, ...) | vmalloc( - E1 * E2 * E3 + array3_size(E1, E2, E3) , ...) ) // And then all remaining 2 factors products when they're not all constants. @@ expression E1, E2; constant C1, C2; @@ ( vmalloc(C1 * C2, ...) | vmalloc( - E1 * E2 + array_size(E1, E2) , ...) ) Signed-off-by: Kees Cook <keescook@chromium.org>

2017-08-23block: replace bi_bdev with a gendisk pointer and partitions indexChristoph Hellwig1-3/+2
This way we don't need a block_device structure to submit I/O. The block_device has different life time rules from the gendisk and request_queue and is usually only available when the block device node is open. Other callers need to explicitly create one (e.g. the lightnvm passthrough code, or the new nvme multipathing code). For the actual I/O path all that we need is the gendisk, which exists once per block device. But given that the block layer also does partition remapping we additionally need a partition index, which is used for said remapping in generic_make_request. Note that all the block drivers generally want request_queue or sometimes the gendisk, so this removes a layer of indirection all over the stack. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rafael/linux-pm Pull power management updates from Rafael Wysocki: "Again, the majority of changes go into the cpufreq subsystem, but there are no big features this time. The cpufreq changes that stand out somewhat are the governor interface rework and improvements related to the handling of frequency tables. Apart from those, there are fixes and new device/CPU IDs in drivers, cleanups and an improvement of the new schedutil governor. Next, there are some changes in the hibernation core, including a fix for a nasty problem related to the MONITOR/MWAIT usage by CPU offline during resume from hibernation, a few core improvements related to memory management during resume, a couple of additional debug features and cleanups. Finally, we have some fixes and cleanups in the devfreq subsystem, generic power domains framework improvements related to system suspend/resume, support for some new chips in intel_idle and in the power capping RAPL driver, a new version of the AnalyzeSuspend utility and some assorted fixes and cleanups. Specifics: - Rework the cpufreq governor interface to make it more straightforward and modify the conservative governor to avoid using transition notifications (Rafael Wysocki). - Rework the handling of frequency tables by the cpufreq core to make it more efficient (Viresh Kumar). - Modify the schedutil governor to reduce the number of wakeups it causes to occur in cases when the CPU frequency doesn't need to be changed (Steve Muckle, Viresh Kumar). - Fix some minor issues and clean up code in the cpufreq core and governors (Rafael Wysocki, Viresh Kumar). - Add Intel Broxton support to the intel_pstate driver (Srinivas Pandruvada). - Fix problems related to the config TDP feature and to the validity of the MSR_HWP_INTERRUPT register in intel_pstate (Jan Kiszka, Srinivas Pandruvada). - Make intel_pstate update the cpu_frequency tracepoint even if the frequency doesn't change to avoid confusing powertop (Rafael Wysocki). - Clean up the usage of __init/__initdata in intel_pstate, mark some of its internal variables as __read_mostly and drop an unused structure element from it (Jisheng Zhang, Carsten Emde). - Clean up the usage of some duplicate MSR symbols in intel_pstate and turbostat (Srinivas Pandruvada). - Update/fix the powernv, s3c24xx and mvebu cpufreq drivers (Akshay Adiga, Viresh Kumar, Ben Dooks). - Fix a regression (introduced during the 4.5 cycle) in the pcc-cpufreq driver by reverting the problematic commit (Andreas Herrmann). - Add support for Intel Denverton to intel_idle, clean up Broxton support in it and make it explicitly non-modular (Jacob Pan, Jan Beulich, Paul Gortmaker). - Add support for Denverton and Ivy Bridge server to the Intel RAPL power capping driver and make it more careful about the handing of MSRs that may not be present (Jacob Pan, Xiaolong Wang). - Fix resume from hibernation on x86-64 by making the CPU offline during resume avoid using MONITOR/MWAIT in the "play dead" loop which may lead to an inadvertent "revival" of a "dead" CPU and a page fault leading to a kernel crash from it (Rafael Wysocki). - Make memory management during resume from hibernation more straightforward (Rafael Wysocki). - Add debug features that should help to detect problems related to hibernation and resume from it (Rafael Wysocki, Chen Yu). - Clean up hibernation core somewhat (Rafael Wysocki). - Prevent KASAN from instrumenting the hibernation core which leads to large numbers of false-positives from it (James Morse). - Prevent PM (hibernate and suspend) notifiers from being called during the cleanup phase if they have not been called during the corresponding preparation phase which is possible if one of the other notifiers returns an error at that time (Lianwei Wang). - Improve suspend-related debug printout in the tasks freezer and clean up suspend-related console handling (Roger Lu, Borislav Petkov). - Update the AnalyzeSuspend script in the kernel sources to version 4.2 (Todd Brandt). - Modify the generic power domains framework to make it handle system suspend/resume better (Ulf Hansson). - Make the runtime PM framework avoid resuming devices synchronously when user space changes the runtime PM settings for them and improve its error reporting (Rafael Wysocki, Linus Walleij). - Fix error paths in devfreq drivers (exynos, exynos-ppmu, exynos-bus) and in the core, make some devfreq code explicitly non-modular and change some of it into tristate (Bartlomiej Zolnierkiewicz, Peter Chen, Paul Gortmaker). - Add DT support to the generic PM clocks management code and make it export some more symbols (Jon Hunter, Paul Gortmaker). - Make the PCI PM core code slightly more robust against possible driver errors (Andy Shevchenko). - Make it possible to change DESTDIR and PREFIX in turbostat (Andy Shevchenko)" * tag 'pm-4.8-rc1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rafael/linux-pm: (89 commits) Revert "cpufreq: pcc-cpufreq: update default value of cpuinfo_transition_latency" PM / hibernate: Introduce test_resume mode for hibernation cpufreq: export cpufreq_driver_resolve_freq() cpufreq: Disallow ->resolve_freq() for drivers providing ->target_index() PCI / PM: check all fields in pci_set_platform_pm() cpufreq: acpi-cpufreq: use cached frequency mapping when possible cpufreq: schedutil: map raw required frequency to driver frequency cpufreq: add cpufreq_driver_resolve_freq() cpufreq: intel_pstate: Check cpuid for MSR_HWP_INTERRUPT intel_pstate: Update cpu_frequency tracepoint every time cpufreq: intel_pstate: clean remnant struct element PM / tools: scripts: AnalyzeSuspend v4.2 x86 / hibernate: Use hlt_play_dead() when resuming from hibernation cpufreq: powernv: Replacing pstate_id with frequency table index intel_pstate: Fix MSR_CONFIG_TDP_x addressing in core_get_max_pstate() PM / hibernate: Image data protection during restoration PM / hibernate: Add missing braces in __register_nosave_region() PM / hibernate: Clean up comments in snapshot.c PM / hibernate: Clean up function headers in snapshot.c PM / hibernate: Add missing braces in hibernate_setup() ...
2016-07-22PM / hibernate: Introduce test_resume mode for hibernationChen Yu1-0/+6
test_resume mode is to verify if the snapshot data written to swap device can be successfully restored to memory. It is useful to ease the debugging process on hibernation, since this mode can not only bypass the BIOSes/bootloader, but also the system re-initialization. To avoid the risk to break the filesystm on persistent storage, this patch resumes the image with tasks frozen. 2016-04-28PM / Hibernate: Call flush_icache_range() on pages restored in-placeJames Morse1-0/+18
Some architectures require code written to memory as if it were data to be 'cleaned' from any data caches before the processor can fetch them as new instructions. During resume from hibernate, the snapshot code copies some pages directly, meaning these architectures do not get a chance to perform their cache maintenance. 2015-11-06mm, page_alloc: rename __GFP_WAIT to __GFP_RECLAIMMel Gorman1-8/+8
__GFP_WAIT was used to signal that the caller was in atomic context and could not sleep. Now it is possible to distinguish between true atomic context and callers that are not willing to sleep. The latter should clear __GFP_DIRECT_RECLAIM so kswapd will still wake. As clearing __GFP_WAIT behaves differently, there is a risk that people will clear the wrong flags. This patch renames __GFP_WAIT to __GFP_RECLAIM to clearly indicate what it does -- setting it allows all reclaim activity, clearing them prevents it. 2015-07-29block: add a bi_error field to struct bioChristoph Hellwig1-8/+4
Currently we have two different ways to signal an I/O error on a BIO: (1) by clearing the BIO_UPTODATE flag (2) by returning a Linux errno value to the bi_end_io callback The first one has the drawback of only communicating a single possible error (-EIO), and the second one has the drawback of not beeing persistent when bios are queued up, and are not passed along from child to parent bio in the ever more popular chaining scenario. Having both mechanisms available has the additional drawback of utterly confusing driver authors and introducing bugs where various I/O submitters only deal with one of them, and the others have to add boilerplate code to deal with both kinds of error returns. So add a new bi_error field to store an errno value directly in struct bio and remove the existing mechanisms to clean all this up. 2012-07-01PM / Hibernate: Print hibernation/thaw progress indicator one line at a time.Bojan Smojver1-27/+27
With the introduction of suspend to both into in-kernel hibernation code, dmesg was getting polluted with backspace characters printed as part of image saving progress indicator. This patch introduces printing of progress indicator on image save/load every 10% and one line at a time. As an additional benefit, all other messages emitted by the kernel during hibernation/thaw should now print cleanly as well. 2012-07-01PM / Hibernate: Enable suspend to both for in-kernel hibernation.Bojan Smojver1-0/+28
It is often useful to suspend to memory after hibernation image has been written to disk. If the battery runs out or power is otherwise lost, the computer will resume from the hibernated image. If not, it will resume from memory and hibernation image will be discarded. Signed-off-by: Bojan Smojver <bojan@rexursive.com> Signed-off-by: Rafael J. Wysocki <rjw@sisk.pl>
2012-05-01PM / Hibernate: Hibernate/thaw fixes/improvementsBojan Smojver1-23/+39
1. Do not allocate memory for buffers from emergency pools, unless absolutely required. Do not warn about and do not retry non-essential failed allocations. 2. Do not check the amount of free pages left on every single page write, but wait until one map is completely populated and then check. 3. Set maximum number of pages for read buffering consistently, instead of inadvertently depending on the size of the sector type. 4. Fix copyright line, which I missed when I submitted the hibernation threading patch. 5. Dispense with bit shifting arithmetic to improve readability. 6. Really recalculate the number of pages required to be free after all allocations have been done. 7. Fix calculation of pages required for read buffering. Only count in pages that do not belong to high memory. Signed-off-by: Bojan Smojver <bojan@rexursive.com> Signed-off-by: Rafael J. Wysocki <rjw@sisk.pl>
2012-04-24PM / Hibernate: fix the number of pages used for hibernate/thaw bufferingBojan Smojver1-6/+22
Hibernation regression fix, since 3.2. Calculate the number of required free pages based on non-high memory pages only, because that is where the buffers will come from. Commit 081a9d043c983f161b78fdc4671324d1342b86bc introduced a new buffer page allocation logic during hibernation, in order to improve the performance. The amount of pages allocated was calculated based on total amount of pages available, although only non-high memory pages are usable for this purpose. This caused hibernation code to attempt to over allocate pages on platforms that have high memory, which led to hangs. Signed-off-by: Bojan Smojver <bojan@rexursive.com> Signed-off-by: Rafael J. 2010-12-16PM / Hibernate: Restore old swap signature to avoid user space breakageRafael J. Wysocki1-1/+1
Commit 3624eb0 (PM / Hibernate: Modify signature used to mark swap) attempted to modify hibernate signature used to mark swap partitions containing hibernation images, so that old kernels don't try to handle compressed images. However, this change broke resume from hibernation on Fedora 14 that apparently doesn't pass the resume= argument to the kernel and tries to trigger resume from early user space. This doesn't work, because the signature is now different, so the old signature has to be restored to avoid the problem. Addresses https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=22732 . 2010-12-06PM / Hibernate: Use async I/O when reading compressed hibernation imageBojan Smojver1-15/+38
This is a fix for reading LZO compressed image using async I/O. Essentially, instead of having just one page into which we keep reading blocks from swap, we allocate enough of them to cover the largest compressed size and then let block I/O pick them all up. Once we have them all (and here we wait), we decompress them, as usual. Obviously, the very first block we still pick up synchronously, because we need to know the size of the lot before we pick up the rest. Also fixed the copyright line, which I've forgotten before. 2010-11-13block: clean up blkdev_get() wrappers and their usersTejun Heo1-2/+2
After recent blkdev_get() modifications, open_by_devnum() and open_bdev_exclusive() are simple wrappers around blkdev_get(). Replace them with blkdev_get_by_dev() and blkdev_get_by_path(). blkdev_get_by_dev() is identical to open_by_devnum(). blkdev_get_by_path() is slightly different in that it doesn't automatically add %FMODE_EXCL to @mode. All users are converted. Most conversions are mechanical and don't introduce any behavior difference. There are several exceptions. * btrfs now sets FMODE_EXCL in btrfs_device->mode, so there's no reason to OR it explicitly on blkdev_put(). * gfs2, nilfs2 and the generic mount_bdev() now set FMODE_EXCL in sb->s_mode. * With the above changes, sb->s_mode now always should contain FMODE_EXCL. WARN_ON_ONCE() added to kill_block_super() to detect errors. The new blkdev_get_*() functions are with proper docbook comments. While at it, add function description to blkdev_get() too. 2010-11-13block: make blkdev_get/put() handle exclusive accessTejun Heo1-2/+3
Over time, block layer has accumulated a set of APIs dealing with bdev open, close, claim and release. * blkdev_get/put() are the primary open and close functions. * bd_claim/release() deal with exclusive open. * open/close_bdev_exclusive() are combination of open and claim and the other way around, respectively. * bd_link/unlink_disk_holder() to create and remove holder/slave symlinks. * open_by_devnum() wraps bdget() + blkdev_get(). The interface is a bit confusing and the decoupling of open and claim makes it impossible to properly guarantee exclusive access as in-kernel open + claim sequence can disturb the existing exclusive open even before the block layer knows the current open if for another exclusive access. Reorganize the interface such that, * blkdev_get() is extended to include exclusive access management. @holder argument is added and, if is @FMODE_EXCL specified, it will gain exclusive access atomically w.r.t. other exclusive accesses. * blkdev_put() is similarly extended. It now takes @mode argument and if @FMODE_EXCL is set, it releases an exclusive access. Also, when the last exclusive claim is released, the holder/slave symlinks are removed automatically. * bd_claim/release() and close_bdev_exclusive() are no longer necessary and either made static or removed. * bd_link_disk_holder() remains the same but bd_unlink_disk_holder() is no longer necessary and removed. * open_bdev_exclusive() becomes a simple wrapper around lookup_bdev() and blkdev_get(). It also has an unexpected extra bdev_read_only() test which probably should be moved into blkdev_get(). * open_by_devnum() is modified to take @holder argument and pass it to blkdev_get(). Most of bdev open/close operations are unified into blkdev_get/put() and most exclusive accesses are tested atomically at the open time (as it should). This cleans up code and removes some, both valid and invalid, but unnecessary all the same, corner cases. open_bdev_exclusive() and open_by_devnum() can use further cleanup - rename to blkdev_get_by_path() and blkdev_get_by_devt() and drop special features. Well, let's leave them for another day. Most conversions are straight-forward. drbd conversion is a bit more involved as there was some reordering, but the logic should stay the same. 2010-09-09swap: revert special hibernation allocationHugh Dickins1-3/+3
Please revert 2.6.36-rc commit d2997b1042ec150616c1963b5e5e919ffd0b0ebf "hibernation: freeze swap at hibernation". It complicated matters by adding a second swap allocation path, just for hibernation; without in any way fixing the issue that it was intended to address - page reclaim after fixing the hibernation image might free swap from a page already imaged as swapcache, letting its swap be reallocated to store a different page of the image: resulting in data corruption if the imaged page were freed as clean then swapped back in. Pages freed to si->swap_map were still in danger of being reallocated by the alternative allocation path. I guess it inadvertently fixed slow SSD swap allocation for hibernation, as reported by Nigel Cunningham: by missing out the discards that occur on the usual swap allocation path; but that was unintentional, and needs a separate fix. 2010-08-09hibernation: freeze swap at hibernationKAMEZAWA Hiroyuki1-3/+3
When taking a memory snapshot in hibernate_snapshot(), all (directly called) memory allocations use GFP_ATOMIC. Hence swap misusage during hibernation never occurs. But from a pessimistic point of view, there is no guarantee that no page allcation has __GFP_WAIT. It is better to have a global indication "we enter hibernation, don't use swap!". This patch tries to freeze new-swap-allocation during hibernation. (All user processes are frozenm so swapin is not a concern). This way, no updates will happen to swap_map[] between hibernate_snapshot() and save_image(). Swap is thawed when swsusp_free() is called. We can be assured that swap corruption will not occur.
