2008-02-08CONFIG_HIGHPTE vs. sub-page page tables.Martin Schwidefsky2-4/+7
Background: I've implemented 1K/2K page tables for s390. These sub-page page tables are required to properly support the s390 virtualization instruction with KVM. The SIE instruction requires that the page tables have 256 page table entries (pte) followed by 256 page status table entries (pgste). The pgstes are only required if the process is using the SIE instruction. The pgstes are updated by the hardware and by the hypervisor for a number of reasons, one of them is dirty and reference bit tracking. To avoid wasting memory the standard pte table allocation should return 1K/2K (31/64 bit) and 2K/4K if the process is using SIE. Problem: Page size on s390 is 4K, page table size is 1K or 2K. That means the s390 version for pte_alloc_one cannot return a pointer to a struct page. Trouble is that with the CONFIG_HIGHPTE feature on x86 pte_alloc_one cannot return a pointer to a pte either, since that would require more than 32 bit for the return value of pte_alloc_one (and the pte * would not be accessible since its not kmapped). Solution: The only solution I found to this dilemma is a new typedef: a pgtable_t. For s390 pgtable_t will be a (pte *) - to be introduced with a later patch. For everybody else it will be a (struct page *). The additional problem with the initialization of the ptl lock and the NR_PAGETABLE accounting is solved with a constructor pgtable_page_ctor and a destructor pgtable_page_dtor. The page table allocation and free functions need to call these two whenever a page table page is allocated or freed. pmd_populate will get a pgtable_t instead of a struct page pointer. To get the pgtable_t back from a pmd entry that has been installed with pmd_populate a new function pmd_pgtable is added. It replaces the pmd_page call in free_pte_range and apply_to_pte_range. 2008-02-08avoid overflows in kernel/time.cH. Peter Anvin1-1/+1
When the conversion factor between jiffies and milli- or microseconds is not a single multiply or divide, as for the case of HZ == 300, we currently do a multiply followed by a divide. The intervening result, however, is subject to overflows, especially since the fraction is not simplified (for HZ == 300, we multiply by 300 and divide by 1000). This is exposed to the user when passing a large timeout to poll(), for example. This patch replaces the multiply-divide with a reciprocal multiplication on 32-bit platforms. When the input is an unsigned long, there is no portable way to do this on 64-bit platforms there is no portable way to do this since it requires a 128-bit intermediate result (which gcc does support on 64-bit platforms but may generate libgcc calls, e.g. on 64-bit s390), but since the output is a 32-bit integer in the cases affected, just simplify the multiply-divide (*3/10 instead of *300/1000). The reciprocal multiply used can have off-by-one errors in the upper half of the valid output range. This could be avoided at the expense of having to deal with a potential 65-bit intermediate result. Since the intent is to avoid overflow problems and most of the other time conversions are only semiexact, the off-by-one errors were considered an acceptable tradeoff. At Ralf Baechle's suggestion, this version uses a Perl script to compute the necessary constants. We already have dependencies on Perl for kernel compiles. This does, however, require the Perl module Math::BigInt, which is included in the standard Perl distribution starting with version 5.8.0. In order to support older versions of Perl, include a table of canned constants in the script itself, and structure the script so that Math::BigInt isn't required if pulling values from said table. Running the script requires that the HZ value is available from the Makefile. Thus, this patch also adds the Kconfig variable CONFIG_HZ to the architectures which didn't already have it (alpha, cris, frv, h8300, m32r, m68k, m68knommu, sparc, v850, and xtensa.) It does *not* touch the sh or sh64 architectures, since Paul Mundt has dealt with those separately in the sh tree. Signed-off-by: H. 2008-02-07Sanitize the type of struct user.u_ar0H. Peter Anvin1-1/+1
struct user.u_ar0 is defined to contain a pointer offset on all architectures in which it is defined (all architectures which define an a.out format except SPARC.) However, it has a pointer type in the headers, which is pointless -- <asm/user.h> is not exported to userspace, and it just makes the code messy. Redefine the field as "unsigned long" (which is the same size as a pointer on all Linux architectures) and change the setting code to user offsetof() instead of hand-coded arithmetic. 2008-02-06Fix __const_udelay declaration and definition mismatchesJeff Dike1-1/+1
The declaration and implementation of __const_udelay use different names for the parameter on a number of architectures: include/asm-avr32/delay.h:15:extern void __const_udelay(unsigned long usecs); arch/avr32/lib/delay.c:39:inline void __const_udelay(unsigned long xloops) include/asm-sh/delay.h:15:extern void __const_udelay(unsigned long usecs); arch/sh/lib/delay.c:22:inline void __const_udelay(unsigned long xloops) include/asm-m32r/delay.h:15:extern void __const_udelay(unsigned long usecs); arch/m32r/lib/delay.c:58:void __const_udelay(unsigned long xloops) include/asm-x86/delay.h:16:extern void __const_udelay(unsigned long usecs); arch/x86/lib/delay_32.c:82:inline void __const_udelay(unsigned long xloops) arch/x86/lib/delay_64.c:46:inline void __const_udelay(unsigned long xloops) The units of the parameter isn't usecs, so that name is definitely wrong. 2007-07-19arch: personality independent stack topPeter Zijlstra1-0/+1
New arch macro STACK_TOP_MAX it gives the larges valid stack address for the architecture in question. It differs from STACK_TOP in that it will not distinguish between personalities but will always return the largest possible address. This is used to create the initial stack on execve, which we will move down to the proper location once the binfmt code has figured out where that is. 2007-07-17fbdev: detect primary display deviceAntonino A. Daplas1-0/+6
Add function helper, fb_is_primary_device(). Given struct fb_info, it will return a nonzero value if the device is the primary display. Currently, only the i386 is supported where the function checks for the IORESOURCE_ROM_SHADOW flag. 2007-07-17Add __GFP_MOVABLE for callers to flag allocations from high memory that may ↵Mel Gorman1-1/+2
be migrated It is often known at allocation time whether a page may be migrated or not. This patch adds a flag called __GFP_MOVABLE and a new mask called GFP_HIGH_MOVABLE. Allocations using the __GFP_MOVABLE can be either migrated using the page migration mechanism or reclaimed by syncing with backing storage and discarding. An API function very similar to alloc_zeroed_user_highpage() is added for __GFP_MOVABLE allocations called alloc_zeroed_user_highpage_movable(). The flags used by alloc_zeroed_user_highpage() are not changed because it would change the semantics of an existing API. After this patch is applied there are no in-kernel users of alloc_zeroed_user_highpage() so it probably should be marked deprecated if this patch is merged. Note that this patch includes a minor cleanup to the use of __GFP_ZERO in shmem.c to keep all flag modifications to inode->mapping in the shmem_dir_alloc() helper function. This clean-up suggestion is courtesy of Hugh Dickens. Additional credit goes to Christoph Lameter and Linus Torvalds for shaping the concept. 2007-07-16dma-mapping: prevent dma dependent code from linking on !HAS_DMA archsDan Williams1-6/+0
Continuing the work started in 411f0f3edc141a582190d3605cadd1d993abb6df ... This enables code with a dma path, that compiles away, to build without requiring additional code factoring. It also prevents code that calls dma_alloc_coherent and dma_free_coherent from linking whereas previously the code would hit a BUG() at run time. Finally, it allows archs that set !HAS_DMA to delete their asm/dma-mapping.h file. 2007-05-11m32r: fix switch_to macro to push/pop frame pointer if neededHirokazu Takata1-0/+11
This patch fixes a rarely-happened but severe scheduling problem of the recent m32r kernel of 2.6.17-rc3 or later. In the following previous m32r patch, the switch_to macro was modified not to do unnecessary push/pop operations for tuning. > [PATCH] m32r: update switch_to macro for tuning > 4127272c38619c56f0c1aa01d01c7bd757db70a1 In this modification, only 'lr' and 'sp' registers are push/pop'ed, assuming that the m32r kernel is always compiled with -fomit-frame-pointer option. However, in 2.6 kernel, kernel/sched.c is irregularly compiled with -fno-omit-frame-pointer if CONFIG_SCHED_NO_NO_OMIT_FRAME_POINTER is not defined. -- kernel/Makefile -- : ifneq ($(CONFIG_SCHED_NO_NO_OMIT_FRAME_POINTER),y) # According to Alan Modra <alan@linuxcare.com.au>, the -fno-omit-frame-pointer is # needed for x86 only. Why this used to be enabled for all architectures is beyond # me. I suspect most platforms don't need this, but until we know that for sure # I turn this off for IA-64 only. Andreas Schwab says it's also needed on m68k # to get a correct value for the wait-channel (WCHAN in ps). --davidm CFLAGS_sched.o := $(PROFILING) -fno-omit-frame-pointer endif : --- Therefore, for the recent m32r kernel, we have to push/pop 'fp' (frame pointer) if CONFIG_FRAME_POINTER is defined or CONFIG_SCHED_NO_NO_OMIT_FRAME_POINTER is not defined. 2007-05-09Remove hardcoding of hard_smp_processor_id on UP systemsFernando Luis Vazquez Cao1-1/+5
With the advent of kdump, the assumption that the boot CPU when booting an UP kernel is always the CPU with a particular hardware ID (often 0) (usually referred to as BSP on some architectures) is not valid anymore. The reason being that the dump capture kernel boots on the crashed CPU (the CPU that invoked crash_kexec), which may be or may not be that particular CPU. Move definition of hard_smp_processor_id for the UP case to architecture-specific code ("asm/smp.h") where it belongs, so that each architecture can provide its own implementation.
