Assume:
de=0xffff8881317c2fff
dlimit=0x0xffff8881317c3000
If read 'de->name_len' which address is 0xffff8881317c3005, obviously is
out of range, then will trigger use-after-free.
To solve this issue, 'dlimit' must reserve 8 bytes, as we will read
'de->name_len' to judge if '(char *) de + de->name_len' out of range.

We got issue as follows:
[home]# fsck.ext4 -fn ram0yb
e2fsck 1.45.6 (20-Mar-2020)
Pass 1: Checking inodes, blocks, and sizes
Pass 2: Checking directory structure
Symlink /p3/d14/d1a/l3d (inode #3494) is invalid.
Clear? no
Entry 'l3d' in /p3/d14/d1a (3383) has an incorrect filetype (was 7, should be 0).
Fix? no
As the symlink file size does not match the file content. If the writeback
of the symlink data block failed, ext4_finish_bio() handles the end of IO.
However this function fails to mark the buffer with BH_write_io_error and
so when unmount does journal checkpoint it cannot detect the writeback
error and will cleanup the journal. Thus we've lost the correct data in the
journal area. To solve this issue, mark the buffer as BH_write_io_error in
ext4_finish_bio().

Since the initial introduction of (posix) fallocate back at the turn of
the century, it has been possible to use this syscall to change the
user-visible contents of files. This can happen by extending the file
size during a preallocation, or through any of the newer modes (punch,
zero, collapse, insert range). Because the call can be used to change
file contents, we should treat it like we do any other modification to a
file -- update the mtime, and drop set[ug]id privileges/capabilities.
The VFS function file_modified() does all this for us if pass it a
locked inode, so let's make fallocate drop permissions correctly.

This adds commit_tid info in ext4_fc_commit_start/stop which is helpful
in debugging fast_commit issues.
For e.g. issues where due to jbd2 journal full commit, FC miss to commit
updates to a file.
Also improves TP_prink format string i.e. all ext4 and jbd2 trace events
starts with "dev MAjOR,MINOR". Let's follow the same convention while we
are still at it.

callers of ext4_fc_track_template(). This is helpful in debugging race

dirty page without buffers. Add WARN_ON_ONCE to

creating dirty data without preparing the page properly. Also update the

Currently mb_optimize_scan scan feature which improves filesystem
performance heavily (when FS is fragmented), seems to be not working
with files with extents (ext4 by default has files with extents).
This patch fixes that and makes mb_optimize_scan feature work
for files with extents.
Below are some performance numbers obtained when allocating a 10M and 100M
file with and w/o this patch on a filesytem with no 1M contiguous block.

After moving to the new mount API, mb_optimize_scan mount option
handling was not working as expected due to the parsed value always
being overwritten by default. Refactor and fix this to the expected
behavior described below:
* mb_optimize_scan=1 - On
* mb_optimize_scan=0 - Off
* mb_optimize_scan not passed - On if no. of BGs > threshold else off
* Remounts retain previous value unless we explicitly pass the option

[un]pin_user_pages_remote is dirtying pages without properly warning
the file system in advance. A related race was noted by Jan Kara in
2018[1]; however, more recently instead of it being a very hard-to-hit
race, it could be reliably triggered by process_vm_writev(2) which was
discovered by Syzbot[2].
This is technically a bug in mm/gup.c, but arguably ext4 is fragile in
that if some other kernel subsystem dirty pages without properly
notifying the file system using page_mkwrite(), ext4 will BUG, while
other file systems will not BUG (although data will still be lost).
So instead of crashing with a BUG, issue a warning (since there may be
potential data loss) and just mark the page as clean to avoid
unprivileged denial of service attacks until the problem can be
properly fixed. More discussion and background can be found in the
thread starting at [2].

when ext4 filesystem is created with 64k block size, ^extent and
^huge_file features. the upper_limit would underflow during the
computations in ext4_max_bitmap_size(). The problem is the size of block
index tree for such large block size is more than i_blocks can carry.
So fix the computation to count with this possibility. After this fix,
the 'res' cannot overflow loff_t on the extreme case of filesystem with
huge_files and 64K block size, so this patch also revert commit
75ca6ad408f4 ("ext4: fix loff_t overflow in ext4_max_bitmap_size()").

Currently ext4_fc_commit_dentry_updates() is of quadratic time
complexity, which is causing performance bottlenecks with high
threads/file/dir count with fs_mark.
This patch makes commit dentry updates (and hence ext4_fc_commit()) path
to linear time complexity. Hence improves the performance of workloads
which does fsync on multiple threads/open files one-by-one.

Currently ext4_mb_clear_bb() & ext4_group_add_blocks() only checks
whether the given block ranges (which is to be freed) belongs to any FS
metadata blocks or not, of the block's respective block group.
But to detect any FS error early, it is better to add more strict
checkings in those functions which checks whether the given blocks
belongs to any critical FS metadata or not within system-zone.

In case of flex_bg feature (which is by default enabled), extents for
any given inode might span across blocks from two different block group.
ext4_mb_mark_bb() only reads the buffer_head of block bitmap once for the
starting block group, but it fails to read it again when the extent length
boundary overflows to another block group. Then in this below loop it
accesses memory beyond the block group bitmap buffer_head and results
into a data abort.
for (i = 0; i < clen; i++)
if (!mb_test_bit(blkoff + i, bitmap_bh->b_data) == !state)
already++;
This patch adds this functionality for checking block group boundary in
ext4_mb_mark_bb() and update the buffer_head(bitmap_bh) for every different
block group.
w/o this patch, I was easily able to hit a data access abort using Power platform.

CONFIG_JBD2_DEBUG and jbd2_journal_enable_debug knobs were added in
update_t_max_wait(), since earlier it used to take a spinlock for
updating t_max_wait, which could cause a bottleneck while starting a
txn (start_this_handle()).
Since in previous patch, we have killed t_handle_lock completely, we
could get rid of this debug config and knob to let t_max_wait be
updated by default again.

This patch kills t_handle_lock transaction spinlock completely from
jbd2.
To explain the reasoning, currently there were three sites at which
this spinlock was used.
1. jbd2_journal_wait_updates()
a. Based on careful code review it can be seen that, we don't need this
lock here. This is since we wait for any currently ongoing updates
based on a atomic variable t_updates. And we anyway don't take any
t_handle_lock while in stop_this_handle().
i.e.
write_lock(&journal->j_state_lock()
jbd2_journal_wait_updates() stop_this_handle()
while (atomic_read(txn->t_updates) { |
DEFINE_WAIT(wait); |
prepare_to_wait(); |
if (atomic_read(txn->t_updates) if (atomic_dec_and_test(txn->t_updates))
write_unlock(&journal->j_state_lock);
schedule(); wake_up()
write_lock(&journal->j_state_lock);
finish_wait();
}
txn->t_state = T_COMMIT
write_unlock(&journal->j_state_lock);
b. Also note that between atomic_inc(&txn->t_updates) in
start_this_handle() and jbd2_journal_wait_updates(), the
synchronization happens via read_lock(journal->j_state_lock) in
start_this_handle();
2. jbd2_journal_extend()
a. jbd2_journal_extend() is called with the handle of each process from
task_struct. So no lock required in updating member fields of handle_t
b. For member fields of h_transaction, all updates happens only via
atomic APIs (which is also within read_lock()).
So, no need of this transaction spinlock.
3. update_t_max_wait()
Based on Jan suggestion, this can be carefully removed using atomic
cmpxchg API.
Note that there can be several processes which are waiting for a new
transaction to be allocated and started. For doing this only one
process will succeed in taking write_lock() and allocating a new txn.
After that all of the process will be updating the t_max_wait (max
transaction wait time). This can be done via below method w/o taking
any locks using atomic cmpxchg.
For more details refer [1]
new = get_new_val();
old = READ_ONCE(ptr->max_val);
while (old < new)
old = cmpxchg(&ptr->max_val, old, new);

jbd2_journal_wait_updates() is called with j_state_lock held. But if
there is a commit in progress, then this transaction might get committed
and freed via jbd2_journal_commit_transaction() ->
jbd2_journal_free_transaction(), when we release j_state_lock.
So check for journal->j_running_transaction everytime we release and
acquire j_state_lock to avoid use-after-free issue.

After commit 6e47a3cc68fc ("ext4: get rid of super block and sbi from
handle_mount_ops()") the 'abort' options stopped working. This is
because we're using ctx_set_mount_flags() helper that's expecting an
argument with the appropriate bit set, but instead got
EXT4_MF_FS_ABORTED which is a bit position. ext4_set_mount_flag() is
using set_bit() while ctx_set_mount_flags() was using bitwise OR.
Create a separate helper ctx_set_mount_flag() to handle setting the
mount_flags correctly.
While we're at it clean up the EXT4_SET_CTX macros so that we're only
creating helpers that we actually use to avoid warnings.

In nfs4_update_changeattr_locked(), we don't need to set the
NFS_INO_REVAL_PAGECACHE flag, because we already know the value of the
change attribute, and we're already flagging the size. In fact, this
forces us to revalidate the change attribute a second time for no good
reason.
This extra flag appears to have been introduced as part of the xattr

When we create a file with modefromsids we set an ACL that
has one ACE for the magic modefromsid as well as a second ACE that
grants full access to all authenticated users.
When later we chante the mode on the file we strip away this, and other,
ACE for authenticated users in set_chmod_dacl() and then just add back/update
the modefromsid ACE.
Thus leaving the file with a single ACE that is for the mode and no ACE
to grant any user any rights to access the file.
Fix this by always adding back also the modefromsid ACE so that we do not
drop the rights to access the file.

When cifs_get_root() fails during cifs_smb3_do_mount() we call
deactivate_locked_super() which eventually will call delayed_free() which
will free the context.
In this situation we should not proceed to enter the out: section in
cifs_smb3_do_mount() and free the same resources a second time.

When idsfromsid is used we create a special SID for owner/group.
This structure must be initialized or else the first 5 bytes
of the Authority field of the SID will contain uninitialized data
and thus not be a valid SID.

'setcifsacl -g <SID>' silently fails to set the group SID on server.
Actually, the bug existed since commit 438471b67963 ("CIFS: Add support
for setting owner info, dos attributes, and create time"), but this fix
will not apply cleanly to kernel versions <= v5.10.
