2011-08-12xfs: remove subdirectoriesChristoph Hellwig2-92/+0
Use the move from Linux 2.6 to Linux 3.x as an excuse to kill the annoying subdirectories in the XFS source code. Besides the large amount of file rename the only changes are to the Makefile, a few files including headers with the subdirectory prefix, and the binary sysctl compat code that includes a header under fs/xfs/ from kernel/. The remaining functionality in debug.[ch] is effectively just assert handling, conditional debug definitions and hex dumping. The hex dumping and assert function can be moved into the new printk module, while the rest can be moved into top-level header files. This allows fs/xfs/support/debug.[ch] to be completely removed from the codebase. 2011-01-12xfs: prevent NMI timeouts in cmn_errDave Chinner2-68/+66
We currently have a global error message buffer in cmn_err that is protected by a spin lock that disables interrupts. Recently there have been reports of NMI timeouts occurring when the console is being flooded by SCSI error reports due to cmn_err() getting stuck trying to print to the console while holding this lock (i.e. with interrupts disabled). The NMI watchdog is seeing this CPU as non-responding and so is triggering a panic. While the trigger for the reported case is SCSI errors, pretty much anything that spams the kernel log could cause this to occur. Realistically the only reason that we have the intemediate message buffer is to prepend the correct kernel log level prefix to the log message. The only reason we have the lock is to protect the global message buffer and the only reason the message buffer is global is to keep it off the stack. Hence if we can avoid needing a global message buffer we avoid needing the lock, and we can do this with a small amount of cleanup and some preprocessor tricks: 1. clean up xfs_cmn_err() panic mask functionality to avoid needing debug code in xfs_cmn_err() 2. remove the couple of "!" message prefixes that still exist that the existing cmn_err() code steps over. 3. redefine CE_* levels directly to KERN_* 4. redefine cmn_err() and friends to use printk() directly via variable argument length macros. By doing this, we can completely remove the cmn_err() code and the lock that is causing the problems, and rely solely on printk() serialisation to ensure that we don't get garbled messages. A series of followup patches is really needed to clean up all the cmn_err() calls and related messages properly, but that results in a series that is not easily back portable to enterprise kernels. Hence this initial fix is only to address the direct problem in the lowest impact way possible. 2010-07-26xfs: drop dmapi hooksChristoph Hellwig1-1/+0
Dmapi support was never merged upstream, but we still have a lot of hooks bloating XFS for it, all over the fast pathes of the filesystem. This patch drops over 700 lines of dmapi overhead. If we'll ever get HSM support in mainline at least the namespace events can be done much saner in the VFS instead of the individual filesystem, so it's not like this is much help for future work. Convert the old xfs tracing support that could only be used with the out of tree kdb and xfsidbg patches to use the generic event tracer. To use it make sure CONFIG_EVENT_TRACING is enabled and then enable all xfs trace channels by: echo 1 > /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/events/xfs/enable or alternatively enable single events by just doing the same in one event subdirectory, e.g. echo 1 > /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/events/xfs/xfs_ihold/enable or set more complex filters, etc. In Documentation/trace/events.txt all this is desctribed in more detail. To reads the events do a cat /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/trace Compared to the last posting this patch converts the tracing mostly to the one tracepoint per callsite model that other users of the new tracing facility also employ. This allows a very fine-grained control of the tracing, a cleaner output of the traces and also enables the perf tool to use each tracepoint as a virtual performance counter, allowing us to e.g. count how often certain workloads git various spots in XFS. Take a look at http://lwn.net/Articles/346470/ for some examples. Also the btree tracing isn't included at all yet, as it will require additional core tracing features not in mainline yet, I plan to deliver it later. xfs_fs_vcmn_err can be called under a spinlock, but does a sleeping memory allocation to create buffer for it's internal sprintf. Fortunately it's the only caller of icmn_err, so we can merge the two and have one single static buffer and spinlock protecting it. While we're at it make sure we proper __attribute__ format annotations so that the compiler can detect mismatched format strings. 2008-07-28[XFS] streamline init/exit pathChristoph Hellwig2-8/+1
Currently the xfs module init/exit code is a mess. It's farmed out over a lot of function with very little error checking. This patch makes sure we propagate all initialization failures properly and clean up after them. Various runtime initializations are replaced with compile-time initializations where possible to make this easier. The exit path is similarly consolidated. There's now split out function to create/destroy the kmem zones and alloc/free the trace buffers. I've also changed the ktrace allocations to KM_MAYFAIL and handled errors resulting from that. And yes, we really should replace the XFS_*_TRACE ifdefs with a single XFS_TRACE.. 2008-04-18[XFS] Use power-of-2 sized buffers to reduce overheadDavid Chinner2-8/+15
Now that the ktrace_enter() code is using atomics, the non-power-of-2 buffer sizes - which require modulus operations to get the index - are showing up as using substantial CPU in the profiles. Force the buffer sizes to be rounded up to the nearest power of two and use masking rather than modulus operations to convert the index counter to the buffer index. This reduces ktrace_enter overhead to 8% of a CPU time, and again almost halves the trace intensive test runtime. ktrace_enter() is consuming vast amounts of CPU time due to the use of a single global lock for protecting buffer index increments. Change it to use per-buffer atomic counters - this reduces ktrace_enter() overhead during a trace intensive test on a 4p machine from 58% of all CPU time to 12% and halves test runtime. - remove the != 0 inside the unlikely in ASSERT_ALWAYS because sparse now complains about comparisons between pointers and 0 - add a standalone ASSERT implementation because defining it to ASSERT_ALWAYS means the string is expanded before the token passing stringification. This way we get the actual content of the assertion in the assfail message and don't overflow sparse's stringification buffer leading to sparse error messages. 2007-02-10[XFS] Keep stack usage down for 4k stacks by using noinline.David Chinner1-3/+27
gcc-4.1 and more recent aggressively inline static functions which increases XFS stack usage by ~15% in critical paths. Prevent this from occurring by adding noinline to the STATIC definition. Also uninline some functions that are too large to be inlined and were causing problems with CONFIG_FORCED_INLINING=y. Finally, clean up all the different users of inline, __inline and __inline__ and put them under one STATIC_INLINE macro. For debug kernels the STATIC_INLINE macro uninlines those functions. 2007-02-10[XFS] Prevent buffer overrun in cmn_err().Lachlan McIlroy1-10/+13
The message buffer used by cmn_err() is only 256 bytes and some CXFS messages were exceeding this length. Since we were using vsprintf() and not checking for buffer overruns we were clobbering memory beyond the buffer. The size of the buffer has been increased to 1024 bytes so we can capture these larger messages and we are now using vsnprintf() to prevent overrunning the buffer size. 2006-01-09[PATCH] mutex subsystem, semaphore to mutex: XFSJes Sorensen1-3/+3
This patch switches XFS over to use the new mutex code directly as opposed to the previous workaround patch I posted earlier that avoided the namespace clash by forcing it back to semaphores.
