2016-09-27fs: Replace CURRENT_TIME_SEC with current_time() for inode timestampsDeepa Dinamani1-3/+3
CURRENT_TIME_SEC is not y2038 safe. current_time() will be transitioned to use 64 bit time along with vfs in a separate patch. There is no plan to transistion CURRENT_TIME_SEC to use y2038 safe time interfaces. current_time() will also be extended to use superblock range checking parameters when range checking is introduced. This works because alloc_super() fills in the the s_time_gran in super block to NSEC_PER_SEC. 2016-05-02simple local filesystems: switch to ->iterate_shared()Al Viro1-1/+1
no changes needed (XFS isn't simple, but it has the same parallelism in the interesting parts exercised from CXFS). Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk>
2016-04-04mm, fs: get rid of PAGE_CACHE_* and page_cache_{get,release} macrosKirill A. Shutemov1-9/+9
PAGE_CACHE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN} macros were introduced *long* time ago with promise that one day it will be possible to implement page cache with bigger chunks than PAGE_SIZE. This promise never materialized. And unlikely will. We have many places where PAGE_CACHE_SIZE assumed to be equal to PAGE_SIZE. And it's constant source of confusion on whether PAGE_CACHE_* or PAGE_* constant should be used in a particular case, especially on the border between fs and mm. Global switching to PAGE_CACHE_SIZE != PAGE_SIZE would cause to much breakage to be doable. Let's stop pretending that pages in page cache are special. They are not. The changes are pretty straight-forward: - <foo> << (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) -> <foo>; - <foo> >> (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) -> <foo>; - PAGE_CACHE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN} -> PAGE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN}; - page_cache_get() -> get_page(); - page_cache_release() -> put_page(); This patch contains automated changes generated with coccinelle using script below. For some reason, coccinelle doesn't patch header files. I've called spatch for them manually. The only adjustment after coccinelle is revert of changes to PAGE_CAHCE_ALIGN definition: we are going to drop it later. There are few places in the code where coccinelle didn't reach. I'll fix them manually in a separate patch. Comments and documentation also will be addressed with the separate patch. virtual patch @@ expression E; @@ - E << (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) + E @@ expression E; @@ - E >> (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) + E @@ @@ - PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT + PAGE_SHIFT @@ @@ - PAGE_CACHE_SIZE + PAGE_SIZE @@ @@ - PAGE_CACHE_MASK + PAGE_MASK @@ expression E; @@ - PAGE_CACHE_ALIGN(E) + PAGE_ALIGN(E) @@ expression E; @@ - page_cache_get(E) + get_page(E) @@ expression E; @@ - page_cache_release(E) + put_page(E) Signed-off-by: Kirill A. 2010-08-09clean up write_begin usage for directories in pagecacheChristoph Hellwig1-14/+7
For filesystem that implement directories in pagecache we call block_write_begin with an already allocated page for this code, while the normal regular file write path uses the default block_write_begin behaviour. Get rid of the __foofs_write_begin helper and opencode the normal write_begin call in foofs_write_begin, while adding a new foofs_prepare_chunk helper for the directory code. The added benefit is that foofs_prepare_chunk has a much saner calling convention. Note that the interruptible flag passed into block_write_begin is always ignored if we already pass in a page (see next patch for details), and we never were doing truncations of exessive blocks for this case either so we can switch directly to block_write_begin_newtrunc. 2010-05-27rename the generic fsync implementationsChristoph Hellwig1-1/+1
We don't name our generic fsync implementations very well currently. The no-op implementation for in-memory filesystems currently is called simple_sync_file which doesn't make too much sense to start with, the the generic one for simple filesystems is called simple_fsync which can lead to some confusion. This patch renames the generic file fsync method to generic_file_fsync to match the other generic_file_* routines it is supposed to be used with, and the no-op implementation to noop_fsync to make it obvious what to expect. In addition add some documentation for both methods. Signed-off-by: Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de> Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk>

2007-05-07mm: make read_cache_page synchronousNick Piggin1-9/+1
Ensure pages are uptodate after returning from read_cache_page, which allows us to cut out most of the filesystem-internal PageUptodate calls. I didn't have a great look down the call chains, but this appears to fixes 7 possible use-before uptodate in hfs, 2 in hfsplus, 1 in jfs, a few in ecryptfs, 1 in jffs2, and a possible cleared data overwritten with readpage in block2mtd. All depending on whether the filler is async and/or can return with a !uptodate page. 2006-03-28[PATCH] Make most file operations structs in fs/ constArjan van de Ven1-1/+1
This is a conversion to make the various file_operations structs in fs/ const. Basically a regexp job, with a few manual fixups The goal is both to increase correctness (harder to accidentally write to shared datastructures) and reducing the false sharing of cachelines with things that get dirty in .data (while .rodata is nicely read only and thus cache clean) Signed-off-by: Arjan van de Ven <arjan@infradead.org> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
2006-01-08[PATCH] fix possible PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT overflowsAndrew Morton1-2/+2
We've had two instances recently of overflows when doing 64_bit_value = (32_bit_value << PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT) I did a tree-wide grep of `<<.*PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT' and this is the result. - afs_rxfs_fetch_descriptor.offset is of type off_t, which seems broken. - jfs and jffs are limited to 4GB anyway. - reiserfs map_block_for_writepage() takes an unsigned long for the block - it should take sector_t. (It'll fail for huge filesystems with blocksize<PAGE_CACHE_SIZE) - cramfs_read() needs to use sector_t (I think cramsfs is busted on large filesystems anyway) - affs is limited in file size anyway. - I generally didn't fix 32-bit overflows in directory operations. - arm's __flush_dcache_page() is peculiar. What if the page lies beyond 4G? - gss_wrap_req_priv() needs checking (snd_buf->page_base) Cc: Oleg Drokin <green@linuxhacker.ru> Cc: David Howells <dhowells@redhat.com> Cc: David Woodhouse <dwmw2@infradead.org> Cc: <reiserfs-dev@namesys.com> Cc: Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de> Cc: Anton Altaparmakov <aia21@cantab.net> Cc: Jeff Dike <jdike@addtoit.com> Cc: Paolo 'Blaisorblade' Giarrusso <blaisorblade@yahoo.it> Cc: Roman Zippel <zippel@linux-m68k.org> Cc: <linux-fsdevel@vger.kernel.org> Cc: Miklos Szeredi <miklos@szeredi.hu> Cc: Russell King <rmk@arm.linux.org.uk> Cc: Trond Myklebust <trond.myklebust@fys.uio.no> Cc: Neil Brown <neilb@cse.unsw.edu.au> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>

Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
