2016-09-27fs: Replace CURRENT_TIME with current_time() for inode timestampsDeepa Dinamani1-1/+1
CURRENT_TIME macro is not appropriate for filesystems as it doesn't use the right granularity for filesystem timestamps. Use current_time() instead. CURRENT_TIME is also not y2038 safe. This is also in preparation for the patch that transitions vfs timestamps to use 64 bit time and hence make them y2038 safe. As part of the effort current_time() will be extended to do range checks. Hence, it is necessary for all file system timestamps to use current_time(). Also, current_time() will be transitioned along with vfs to be y2038 safe. Note that whenever a single call to current_time() is used to change timestamps in different inodes, it is because they share the same time granularity. 2016-08-02nilfs2: move ioctl interface and disk layout to uapi separatelyRyusuke Konishi1-1/+0
The header file "include/linux/nilfs2_fs.h" is composed of parts for ioctl and disk format, and both are intended to be shared with user space programs. This moves them to the uapi directory "include/uapi/linux" splitting the file to "nilfs2_api.h" and "nilfs2_ondisk.h". The following minor changes are accompanied by this migration: - nilfs_direct_node struct in nilfs2/direct.h is converged to nilfs2_ondisk.h because it's an on-disk structure. - inline functions nilfs_rec_len_from_disk() and nilfs_rec_len_to_disk() are moved to nilfs2/dir.c. 2014-10-14nilfs2: add missing blkdev_issue_flush() to nilfs_sync_fs()Andreas Rohner1-5/+3
Under normal circumstances nilfs_sync_fs() writes out the super block, which causes a flush of the underlying block device. But this depends on the THE_NILFS_SB_DIRTY flag, which is only set if the pointer to the last segment crosses a segment boundary. So if only a small amount of data is written before the call to nilfs_sync_fs(), no flush of the block device occurs. In the above case an additional call to blkdev_issue_flush() is needed. To prevent unnecessary overhead, the new flag nilfs->ns_flushed_device is introduced, which is cleared whenever new logs are written and set whenever the block device is flushed. For convenience the function nilfs_flush_device() is added, which contains the above logic. 2014-04-03nilfs2: implementation of NILFS_IOCTL_SET_SUINFO ioctlAndreas Rohner1-0/+92
With this ioctl the segment usage entries in the SUFILE can be updated from userspace. This is useful, because it allows the userspace GC to modify and update segment usage entries for specific segments, which enables it to avoid unnecessary write operations. If a segment needs to be cleaned, but there is no or very little reclaimable space in it, the cleaning operation basically degrades to a useless moving operation. In the end the only thing that changes is the location of the data and a timestamp in the segment usage information. With this ioctl the GC can skip the cleaning and update the segment usage entries directly instead. This is basically a shortcut to cleaning the segment. It is still necessary to read the segment summary information, but the writing of the live blocks can be skipped if it's not worth it. 2014-01-23fs/nilfs2: fix integer overflow in nilfs_ioctl_wrap_copy()Wenliang Fan1-0/+8
The local variable 'pos' in nilfs_ioctl_wrap_copy function can overflow if a large number was passed to argv->v_index from userspace and the sum of argv->v_index and argv->v_nmembs exceeds the maximum value of __u64 type integer (= ~(__u64)0 = 18446744073709551615). Here, argv->v_index is a 64-bit width argument to specify the start position of target data items (such as segment number, checkpoint number, or virtual block address of nilfs), and argv->v_nmembs gives the total number of the items that userland programs (such as lssu, lscp, or cleanerd) want to get information about, which also gives the maximum element count of argv->v_base[] array. nilfs_ioctl_wrap_copy() calls dofunc() repeatedly and increments the position variable 'pos' at the end of each iteration if dofunc() itself didn't update 'pos': if (pos == ppos) pos += n; This patch prevents the overflow here by rejecting pairs of a start position (argv->v_index) and a total count (argv->v_nmembs) which leads to the overflow. 2013-02-05nilfs2: fix fix very long mount time issueVyacheslav Dubeyko1-1/+4
There exists a situation when GC can work in background alone without any other filesystem activity during significant time. The nilfs_clean_segments() method calls nilfs_segctor_construct() that updates superblocks in the case of NILFS_SC_SUPER_ROOT and THE_NILFS_DISCONTINUED flags are set. But when GC is working alone the nilfs_clean_segments() is called with unset THE_NILFS_DISCONTINUED flag. As a result, the update of superblocks doesn't occurred all this time and in the case of SPOR superblocks keep very old values of last super root placement. SYMPTOMS: Trying to mount a NILFS2 volume after SPOR in such environment ends with very long mounting time (it can achieve about several hours in some cases). REPRODUCING PATH: 1. It needs to use external USB HDD, disable automount and doesn't make any additional filesystem activity on the NILFS2 volume. 2. Generate temporary file with size about 100 - 500 GB (for example, dd if=/dev/zero of=<file_name> bs=1073741824 count=200). The size of file defines duration of GC working. 3. Then it needs to delete file. 4. Start GC manually by means of command "nilfs-clean -p 0". When you start GC by means of such way then, at the end, superblocks is updated by once. So, for simulation of SPOR, it needs to wait sometime (15 - 40 minutes) and simply switch off USB HDD manually. 5. Switch on USB HDD again and try to mount NILFS2 volume. As a result, NILFS2 volume will mount during very long time. REPRODUCIBILITY: 100% FIX: This patch adds checking that superblocks need to update and set THE_NILFS_DISCONTINUED flag before nilfs_clean_segments() call. This is because nilfs_ioctl_change_cpmode() first locks sb->s_umount in read mode and then waits for unfreezing in nilfs_transaction_begin(), whereas thaw_super() locks sb->s_umount in write mode. The locking of sb->s_umount here was intended to make snapshot mounts and the downgrade of snapshots to checkpoints exclusive. This fixes the deadlock issue by replacing the sb->s_umount usage in nilfs_ioctl_change_cpmode() with a dedicated mutex which protects snapshot mounts. 2011-12-20nilfs2: potential integer overflow in nilfs_ioctl_clean_segments()Haogang Chen1-0/+3
There is a potential integer overflow in nilfs_ioctl_clean_segments(). When a large argv[n].v_nmembs is passed from the userspace, the subsequent call to vmalloc() will allocate a buffer smaller than expected, which leads to out-of-bound access in nilfs_ioctl_move_blocks() and lfs_clean_segments(). The following check does not prevent the overflow because nsegs is also controlled by the userspace and could be very large. if (argv[n].v_nmembs > nsegs * nilfs->ns_blocks_per_segment) goto out_free; This patch clamps argv[n].v_nmembs to UINT_MAX / argv[n].v_size, and returns -EINVAL when overflow. 2011-03-09nilfs2: get rid of nilfs_sb_info structureRyusuke Konishi1-12/+11
This directly uses sb->s_fs_info to keep a nilfs filesystem object and fully removes the intermediate nilfs_sb_info structure. With this change, the hierarchy of on-memory structures of nilfs will be simplified as follows: Before: super_block -> nilfs_sb_info -> the_nilfs -> cptree --+-> nilfs_root (current file system) +-> nilfs_root (snapshot A) +-> nilfs_root (snapshot B) : -> nilfs_sc_info (log writer structure) After: super_block -> the_nilfs -> cptree --+-> nilfs_root (current file system) +-> nilfs_root (snapshot A) +-> nilfs_root (snapshot B) : -> nilfs_sc_info (log writer structure) The reason why we didn't design so from the beginning is because the initial shape also differed from the above. The early hierachy was composed of "per-mount-point" super_block -> nilfs_sb_info pairs and a shared nilfs object. On the kernel 2.6.37, it was changed to the current shape in order to unify super block instances into one per device, and this cleanup became applicable as the result. 2011-03-08nilfs2: add compat ioctlRyusuke Konishi1-0/+21

2011-03-08nilfs2: implement FS_IOC_GETFLAGS/SETFLAGS/GETVERSIONRyusuke Konishi1-0/+70
Add support for the standard attributes set via chattr and read via lsattr. These attributes are already in the flags value in the nilfs2 inode, but currently we don't have any ioctl commands that expose them to the userland. Collaterally, this adds the FS_IOC_GETVERSION ioctl for getting i_generation, which allows users to list the file's generation number with "lsattr -v". 2011-01-10nilfs2: unfold nilfs_dat_inode functionRyusuke Konishi1-7/+5
nilfs_dat_inode function was a wrapper to switch between normal dat inode and gcdat, a clone of the dat inode for garbage collection. This function got obsolete when the gcdat inode was removed, and now we can access the dat inode directly from a nilfs object. So, we will unfold the wrapper and remove it. 2010-12-16nilfs2: fix regression of garbage collection ioctlRyusuke Konishi1-0/+12
On 2.6.37-rc1, garbage collection ioctl of nilfs was broken due to the commit 263d90cefc7d82a0 ("nilfs2: remove own inode hash used for GC"), and leading to filesystem corruption. The patch doesn't queue gc-inodes for log writer if they are reused through the vfs inode cache. Here, gc-inode is the inode which buffers blocks to be relocated on GC. That patch queues gc-inodes in nilfs_init_gcinode() function, but this function is not called when they don't have I_NEW flag. Thus, some of live blocks are wrongly overrode without being moved to new logs. This resolves the problem by moving the gc-inode queueing to an outer function to ensure it's done right. 2010-10-23nilfs2: add bdev freeze/thaw supportRyusuke Konishi1-0/+2
Nilfs hasn't supported the freeze/thaw feature because it didn't work due to the peculiar design that multiple super block instances could be allocated for a device. This limitation was removed by the patch "nilfs2: do not allocate multiple super block instances for a device". So now this adds the freeze/thaw support to nilfs. 2010-03-30include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking ↵Tejun Heo1-0/+1
implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies. percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is used as the basis of conversion. http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py The script does the followings. * Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used, gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h. * When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered - alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there doesn't seem to be any matching order. * If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the file. The conversion was done in the following steps. 1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400 files. 2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion, some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added inclusions to around 150 files. 3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits from #2 to make sure no file was left behind. 4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed. e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually. 5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as necessary. 6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h. 7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq). * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config. * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig * ia64 SMP allmodconfig * s390 SMP allmodconfig * alpha SMP allmodconfig * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig 8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as a separate patch and serve as bisection point. Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step 6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch. If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of the specific arch. 2009-11-08nilfs2: fix kernel oops in error case of nilfs_ioctl_move_blocksRyusuke Konishi1-17/+13
This fixes a kernel oops reported by Markus Trippelsdorf in the email titled "[NILFS users] kernel Oops while running nilfs_cleanerd". The oops was caused by a bug of error path in nilfs_ioctl_move_blocks() function, which was inlined in nilfs_ioctl_clean_segments(). nilfs_ioctl_move_blocks checks duplication of blocks which will be moved in garbage collection. But, the check should have be done within nilfs_ioctl_move_inode_block() to prevent list corruption among buffers storing the target blocks. To fix the kernel oops, this moves forward the duplication check before the list insertion. I also tested this for stable trees [2.6.30, 2.6.31]. 2009-09-14nilfs2: shorten freeze period due to GC in write operation v3Jiro SEKIBA1-7/+19
This is a re-revised patch to shorten freeze period. This version include a fix of the bug Konishi-san mentioned last time. When GC is runnning, GC moves live block to difference segments. Copying live blocks into memory is done in a transaction, however it is not necessarily to be in the transaction. This patch will get the nilfs_ioctl_move_blocks() out from transaction lock and put it before the transaction. I ran sysbench fileio test against nilfs partition. I copied some DVD/CD images and created snapshot to create live blocks before starting the benchmark. Followings are summary of rc8 and rc8 w/ the patch of per-request statistics, which is min/max and avg. I ran each test three times and bellow is average of those numers. According to this benchmark result, average time is slightly degrated. However, worstcase (max) result is significantly improved.
