2011-01-07fs: rcu-walk aware d_revalidate methodNick Piggin1-0/+2

2011-01-07fs: dcache reduce branches in lookup pathNick Piggin2-3/+3
Reduce some branches and memory accesses in dcache lookup by adding dentry flags to indicate common d_ops are set, rather than having to check them. This saves a pointer memory access (dentry->d_op) in common path lookup situations, and saves another pointer load and branch in cases where we have d_op but not the particular operation. Patched with: git grep -E '[.>]([[:space:]])*d_op([[:space:]])*=' | xargs sed -e 's/\([^\t ]*\)->d_op = \(.*\);/d_set_d_op(\1, \2);/' -e 's/\([^\t ]*\)\.d_op = \(.*\);/d_set_d_op(\&\1, \2);/' -i Signed-off-by: Nick Piggin <npiggin@kernel.dk>
2011-01-07fs: icache RCU free inodesNick Piggin1-1/+9
RCU free the struct inode. This will allow: - Subsequent store-free path walking patch. The inode must be consulted for permissions when walking, so an RCU inode reference is a must. - sb_inode_list_lock to be moved inside i_lock because sb list walkers who want to take i_lock no longer need to take sb_inode_list_lock to walk the list in the first place. This will simplify and optimize locking. - Could remove some nested trylock loops in dcache code - Could potentially simplify things a bit in VM land. Do not need to take the page lock to follow page->mapping. The downsides of this is the performance cost of using RCU. In a simple creat/unlink microbenchmark, performance drops by about 10% due to inability to reuse cache-hot slab objects. As iterations increase and RCU freeing starts kicking over, this increases to about 20%. In cases where inode lifetimes are longer (ie. many inodes may be allocated during the average life span of a single inode), a lot of this cache reuse is not applicable, so the regression caused by this patch is smaller. The cache-hot regression could largely be avoided by using SLAB_DESTROY_BY_RCU, however this adds some complexity to list walking and store-free path walking, so I prefer to implement this at a later date, if it is shown to be a win in real situations. I haven't found a regression in any non-micro benchmark so I doubt it will be a problem. Signed-off-by: Nick Piggin <npiggin@kernel.dk>
2011-01-07fs: change d_hash for rcu-walkNick Piggin1-1/+2

2011-01-07fs: change d_compare for rcu-walkNick Piggin1-4/+7
Change d_compare so it may be called from lock-free RCU lookups. This does put significant restrictions on what may be done from the callback, however there don't seem to have been any problems with in-tree fses. If some strange use case pops up that _really_ cannot cope with the rcu-walk rules, we can just add new rcu-unaware callbacks, which would cause name lookup to drop out of rcu-walk mode. For in-tree filesystems, this is just a mechanical change. Signed-off-by: Nick Piggin <npiggin@kernel.dk>
2011-01-07jfs: dont overwrite dentry name in d_revalidateNick Piggin1-8/+35
Use vfat's method for dealing with negative dentries to preserve case, rather than overwrite dentry name in d_revalidate, which is a bit ugly and also gets in the way of doing lock-free path walking. Signed-off-by: Nick Piggin <npiggin@kernel.dk>
2010-11-13block: clean up blkdev_get() wrappers and their usersTejun Heo1-2/+2
After recent blkdev_get() modifications, open_by_devnum() and open_bdev_exclusive() are simple wrappers around blkdev_get(). Replace them with blkdev_get_by_dev() and blkdev_get_by_path(). blkdev_get_by_dev() is identical to open_by_devnum(). blkdev_get_by_path() is slightly different in that it doesn't automatically add %FMODE_EXCL to @mode. All users are converted. Most conversions are mechanical and don't introduce any behavior difference. There are several exceptions. * btrfs now sets FMODE_EXCL in btrfs_device->mode, so there's no reason to OR it explicitly on blkdev_put(). * gfs2, nilfs2 and the generic mount_bdev() now set FMODE_EXCL in sb->s_mode. * With the above changes, sb->s_mode now always should contain FMODE_EXCL. WARN_ON_ONCE() added to kill_block_super() to detect errors. The new blkdev_get_*() functions are with proper docbook comments. While at it, add function description to blkdev_get() too. 2010-11-13block: make blkdev_get/put() handle exclusive accessTejun Heo1-12/+5
Over time, block layer has accumulated a set of APIs dealing with bdev open, close, claim and release. * blkdev_get/put() are the primary open and close functions. * bd_claim/release() deal with exclusive open. * open/close_bdev_exclusive() are combination of open and claim and the other way around, respectively. * bd_link/unlink_disk_holder() to create and remove holder/slave symlinks. * open_by_devnum() wraps bdget() + blkdev_get(). The interface is a bit confusing and the decoupling of open and claim makes it impossible to properly guarantee exclusive access as in-kernel open + claim sequence can disturb the existing exclusive open even before the block layer knows the current open if for another exclusive access. Reorganize the interface such that, * blkdev_get() is extended to include exclusive access management. @holder argument is added and, if is @FMODE_EXCL specified, it will gain exclusive access atomically w.r.t. other exclusive accesses. * blkdev_put() is similarly extended. It now takes @mode argument and if @FMODE_EXCL is set, it releases an exclusive access. Also, when the last exclusive claim is released, the holder/slave symlinks are removed automatically. * bd_claim/release() and close_bdev_exclusive() are no longer necessary and either made static or removed. * bd_link_disk_holder() remains the same but bd_unlink_disk_holder() is no longer necessary and removed. * open_bdev_exclusive() becomes a simple wrapper around lookup_bdev() and blkdev_get(). It also has an unexpected extra bdev_read_only() test which probably should be moved into blkdev_get(). * open_by_devnum() is modified to take @holder argument and pass it to blkdev_get(). Most of bdev open/close operations are unified into blkdev_get/put() and most exclusive accesses are tested atomically at the open time (as it should). This cleans up code and removes some, both valid and invalid, but unnecessary all the same, corner cases. open_bdev_exclusive() and open_by_devnum() can use further cleanup - rename to blkdev_get_by_path() and blkdev_get_by_devt() and drop special features. Well, let's leave them for another day. Most conversions are straight-forward. drbd conversion is a bit more involved as there was some reordering, but the logic should stay the same. 2010-10-04BKL: Remove BKL from JFSJan Blunck1-28/+7

2010-10-04BKL: Explicitly add BKL around get_sb/fill_superJan Blunck1-2/+10
This patch is a preparation necessary to remove the BKL from do_new_mount(). It explicitly adds calls to lock_kernel()/unlock_kernel() around get_sb/fill_super operations for filesystems that still uses the BKL. I've read through all the code formerly covered by the BKL inside do_kern_mount() and have satisfied myself that it doesn't need the BKL any more. do_kern_mount() is already called without the BKL when mounting the rootfs and in nfsctl. do_kern_mount() calls vfs_kern_mount(), which is called from various places without BKL: simple_pin_fs(), nfs_do_clone_mount() through nfs_follow_mountpoint(), afs_mntpt_do_automount() through afs_mntpt_follow_link(). Both later functions are actually the filesystems follow_link inode operation. vfs_kern_mount() is calling the specified get_sb function and lets the filesystem do its job by calling the given fill_super function. Therefore I think it is safe to push down the BKL from the VFS to the low-level filesystems get_sb/fill_super operation. 2010-08-09remove inode_setattrChristoph Hellwig1-3/+11
Replace inode_setattr with opencoded variants of it in all callers. This moves the remaining call to vmtruncate into the filesystem methods where it can be replaced with the proper truncate sequence. In a few cases it was obvious that we would never end up calling vmtruncate so it was left out in the opencoded variant: spufs: explicitly checks for ATTR_SIZE earlier btrfs, hugetlbfs, logfs, dlmfs: explicitly clears ATTR_SIZE earlier ufs: contains an opencoded simple_seattr + truncate that sets the filesize just above In addition to that ncpfs called inode_setattr with handcrafted iattrs, which allowed to trim down the opencoded variant. 2010-05-24quota: move unmount handling into the filesystemChristoph Hellwig1-0/+2
Currently the VFS calls into the quotactl interface for unmounting filesystems. This means filesystems with their own quota handling can't easily distinguish between user-space originating quotaoff and an unount. Instead move the responsibily of the unmount handling into the filesystem to be consistent with all other dquot handling. Note that we do call dquot_disable a lot later now, e.g. after a sync_filesystem. But this is fine as the quota code does all its writes via blockdev's mapping and that is synced even later. Currently do_remount_sb calls into the dquot code to tell it about going from rw to ro and ro to rw. Move this code into the filesystem to not depend on the dquot code in the VFS - note ocfs2 already ignores these calls and handles remount by itself. 2010-03-30include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking ↵Tejun Heo9-0/+9
implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies. percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is used as the basis of conversion. http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py The script does the followings. * Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used, gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h. * When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered - alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there doesn't seem to be any matching order. * If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the file. The conversion was done in the following steps. 1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400 files. 2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion, some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added inclusions to around 150 files. 3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits from #2 to make sure no file was left behind. 4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed. e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually. 5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as necessary. 6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h. 7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq). * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config. * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig * ia64 SMP allmodconfig * s390 SMP allmodconfig * alpha SMP allmodconfig * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig 8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as a separate patch and serve as bisection point. Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step 6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch. If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of the specific arch. 2010-03-05pass writeback_control to ->write_inodeChristoph Hellwig2-2/+5
This gives the filesystem more information about the writeback that is happening. Trond requested this for the NFS unstable write handling, and other filesystems might benefit from this too by beeing able to distinguish between the different callers in more detail. 2010-03-05dquot: cleanup dquot initialize routineChristoph Hellwig4-16/+16
Get rid of the initialize dquot operation - it is now always called from the filesystem and if a filesystem really needs it's own (which none currently does) it can just call into it's own routine directly. Rename the now static low-level dquot_initialize helper to __dquot_initialize and vfs_dq_init to dquot_initialize to have a consistent namespace. 2010-03-05dquot: move dquot initialization responsibility into the filesystemChristoph Hellwig3-1/+21
Currently various places in the VFS call vfs_dq_init directly. This means we tie the quota code into the VFS. Get rid of that and make the filesystem responsible for the initialization. For most metadata operations this is a straight forward move into the methods, but for truncate and open it's a bit more complicated. For truncate we currently only call vfs_dq_init for the sys_truncate case because open already takes care of it for ftruncate and open(O_TRUNC) - the new code causes an additional vfs_dq_init for those which is harmless. For open the initialization is moved from do_filp_open into the open method, which means it happens slightly earlier now, and only for regular files. The latter is fine because we don't need to initialize it for operations on special files, and we already do it as part of the namespace operations for directories. Add a dquot_file_open helper that filesystems that support generic quotas can use to fill in ->open. Signed-off-by: Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de> Signed-off-by: Jan Kara <jack@suse.cz>

2010-03-05dquot: move dquot drop responsibility into the filesystemChristoph Hellwig1-0/+6
Currently clear_inode calls vfs_dq_drop directly. This means we tie the quota code into the VFS. Get rid of that and make the filesystem responsible for the drop inside the ->clear_inode superblock operation. Signed-off-by: Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de> Signed-off-by: Jan Kara <jack@suse.cz>
2010-03-05dquot: cleanup dquot transfer routineChristoph Hellwig1-2/+3
Get rid of the transfer dquot operation - it is now always called from the filesystem and if a filesystem really needs it's own (which none currently does) it can just call into it's own routine directly. Rename the now static low-level dquot_transfer helper to __dquot_transfer and vfs_dq_transfer to dquot_transfer to have a consistent namespace, and make the new dquot_transfer return a normal negative errno value which all callers expect. 2010-03-05dquot: move dquot transfer responsibility into the filesystemChristoph Hellwig5-28/+34
Currently notify_change calls vfs_dq_transfer directly. This means we tie the quota code into the VFS. Get rid of that and make the filesystem responsible for the transfer. Most filesystems already do this, only ufs and udf need the code added, and for jfs it needs to be enabled unconditionally instead of only when ACLs are enabled.
