2006-06-28[PATCH] mark address_space_operations constChristoph Hellwig1-3/+3
Same as with already do with the file operations: keep them in .rodata and prevents people from doing runtime patching. Signed-off-by: Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de> Cc: Steven French <sfrench@us.ibm.com> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
2006-06-23[PATCH] VFS: Permit filesystem to perform statfs with a known root dentryDavid Howells1-2/+2
Give the statfs superblock operation a dentry pointer rather than a superblock pointer. This complements the get_sb() patch. That reduced the significance of sb->s_root, allowing NFS to place a fake root there. However, NFS does require a dentry to use as a target for the statfs operation. This permits the root in the vfsmount to be used instead. linux/mount.h has been added where necessary to make allyesconfig build successfully. Interest has also been expressed for use with the FUSE and XFS filesystems. 2006-06-23[PATCH] VFS: Permit filesystem to override root dentry on mountDavid Howells1-4/+4
Extend the get_sb() filesystem operation to take an extra argument that permits the VFS to pass in the target vfsmount that defines the mountpoint. The filesystem is then required to manually set the superblock and root dentry pointers. For most filesystems, this should be done with simple_set_mnt() which will set the superblock pointer and then set the root dentry to the superblock's s_root (as per the old default behaviour). The get_sb() op now returns an integer as there's now no need to return the superblock pointer. This patch permits a superblock to be implicitly shared amongst several mount points, such as can be done with NFS to avoid potential inode aliasing. In such a case, simple_set_mnt() would not be called, and instead the mnt_root and mnt_sb would be set directly. The patch also makes the following changes: (*) the get_sb_*() convenience functions in the core kernel now take a vfsmount pointer argument and return an integer, so most filesystems have to change very little. (*) If one of the convenience function is not used, then get_sb() should normally call simple_set_mnt() to instantiate the vfsmount. This will always return 0, and so can be tail-called from get_sb(). (*) generic_shutdown_super() now calls shrink_dcache_sb() to clean up the dcache upon superblock destruction rather than shrink_dcache_anon(). This is required because the superblock may now have multiple trees that aren't actually bound to s_root, but that still need to be cleaned up. The currently called functions assume that the whole tree is rooted at s_root, and that anonymous dentries are not the roots of trees which results in dentries being left unculled. However, with the way NFS superblock sharing are currently set to be implemented, these assumptions are violated: the root of the filesystem is simply a dummy dentry and inode (the real inode for '/' may well be inaccessible), and all the vfsmounts are rooted on anonymous[*] dentries with child trees. [*] Anonymous until discovered from another tree. (*) The documentation has been adjusted, including the additional bit of changing ext2_* into foo_* in the documentation. 2006-03-28[PATCH] Make most file operations structs in fs/ constArjan van de Ven1-2/+2
This is a conversion to make the various file_operations structs in fs/ const. Basically a regexp job, with a few manual fixups The goal is both to increase correctness (harder to accidentally write to shared datastructures) and reducing the false sharing of cachelines with things that get dirty in .data (while .rodata is nicely read only and thus cache clean) Signed-off-by: Arjan van de Ven <arjan@infradead.org> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
2006-03-27[PATCH] uml: fix hostfs stack corruptionJeff Dike1-1/+0
Noted by Oleg Drokin: We initialized an extra slot of struct kstatfs.spare, sometimes causing stack corruption. 2005-12-29[PATCH] uml: hostfs - fix possible PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT overflowsPaolo 'Blaisorblade' Giarrusso1-1/+6
Prevent page->index << PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT from overflowing. There is a casting there, but was added without care, so it's at the wrong place. Note the extra parens around the shift - "+" is higher precedence than "<<", leading to a GCC warning which saved all us. 2005-12-29[PATCH] Hostfs: remove unused varPaolo 'Blaisorblade' Giarrusso1-2/+0
Trivial removal of unused variable from this file - doesn't even change the generated assembly code, in fact (gcc should trigger a warning for unused value here). Signed-off-by: Paolo 'Blaisorblade' Giarrusso <blaisorblade@yahoo.it> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
2005-11-09[PATCH] changing CONFIG_LOCALVERSION rebuilds too much, for no good reasonOlaf Hering1-1/+0
This patch removes almost all inclusions of linux/version.h. The 3 #defines are unused in most of the touched files. A few drivers use the simple KERNEL_VERSION(a,b,c) macro, which is unfortunatly in linux/version.h. There are also lots of #ifdef for long obsolete kernels, this was not touched. In a few places, the linux/version.h include was move to where the LINUX_VERSION_CODE was used. quilt vi `find * -type f -name "*.[ch]"|xargs grep -El '(UTS_RELEASE|LINUX_VERSION_CODE|KERNEL_VERSION|linux/version.h)'|grep -Ev '(/(boot|coda|drm)/|~$)'` search pattern: /UTS_RELEASE\|LINUX_VERSION_CODE\|KERNEL_VERSION\|linux\/\(utsname\|version\).h Signed-off-by: Olaf Hering <olh@suse.de> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
2005-11-07[PATCH] kfree cleanup: fsJesper Juhl1-2/+1

2005-09-30[PATCH] uml: remove empty hostfs_truncate methodPaolo 'Blaisorblade' Giarrusso1-7/+0
Calling truncate() on hostfs spits a kernel warning "Something isn't implemented here", but it still works fine. Indeed, hostfs i_op->truncate doesn't do anything. But hostfs_setattr() -> set_attr() correctly detects ATTR_SIZE and calls truncate() on the host. So we should be safe (using ftruncate() may be better, in case the file is unlinked on the host, but we aren't sure to have the file open for writing, and reopening it would cause the same races; plus nobody should expect UML to be so careful). So, the warning is wrong, because the current implementation is working. Al, am I correct, and can the warning be therefore dropped? 2005-09-09[PATCH] update filesystems for new delete_inode behaviorMark Fasheh1-0/+1
Update the file systems in fs/ implementing a delete_inode() callback to call truncate_inode_pages(). One implementation note: In developing this patch I put the calls to truncate_inode_pages() at the very top of those filesystems delete_inode() callbacks in order to retain the previous behavior. I'm guessing that some of those could probably be optimized. 2005-07-14[PATCH] uml: hostfs: unuse ROOT_DEVPaolo 'Blaisorblade' Giarrusso1-9/+0

2005-05-28[PATCH] uml: remove 2_5compat.hJeff Dike1-1/+0

2005-05-01[PATCH] uml - hostfs: avoid buffersPaolo 'Blaisorblade' Giarrusso1-1/+1
Use this: .set_page_dirty = __set_page_dirty_nobuffers, We already dropped the inclusion of <linux/buffer_head.h>, and we don't have a backing block device for this FS. "Without having looked at it, I'm sure that hostfs does not use buffer_heads. So setting your ->set_page_dirty a_op to point at __set_page_dirty_nobuffers() is a reasonable thing to do - it'll provide a slight speedup." This speedup is one less spinlock held and one less conditional branch, which isn't bad. Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
