2021-07-27tty: drop put_tty_driverJiri Slaby1-2/+2
put_tty_driver() is an alias for tty_driver_kref_put(). There is no need for two exported identical functions, therefore switch all users of old put_tty_driver() to new tty_driver_kref_put() and remove the former for good. 2021-07-27tty: stop using alloc_tty_driverJiri Slaby1-4/+4
alloc_tty_driver was deprecated by tty_alloc_driver in commit 7f0bc6a68ed9 (TTY: pass flags to alloc_tty_driver) in 2012. I never got into eliminating alloc_tty_driver until now. So we still have two functions for allocating drivers which might be confusing. So get rid of alloc_tty_driver uses to eliminate it for good in the next patch. Note we need to switch return value checking as tty_alloc_driver uses ERR_PTR. And flags are now a parameter of tty_alloc_driver. 2021-01-07tty_port: drop last traces of low_latencyJiri Slaby1-1/+0

2018-04-23tty: ipwireless: Replace GFP_ATOMIC with GFP_KERNEL in ipwireless_network_createJia-Ju Bai1-1/+1
ipwireless_network_create() is never called in atomic context. The call chain ending up at ipwireless_network_create() is: [1] ipwireless_network_create() <- config_ipwireless() <- ipwireless_attach() ipwireless_attach() is only set as ".probe" in struct pcmcia_driver. Despite never getting called from atomic context, ipwireless_network_create() calls kzalloc() with GFP_ATOMIC, which does not sleep for allocation. GFP_ATOMIC is not necessary and can be replaced with GFP_KERNEL, which can sleep and improve the possibility of sucessful allocation. This is found by a static analysis tool named DCNS written by myself. And I also manually check it. 2017-11-21treewide: setup_timer() -> timer_setup()Kees Cook1-6/+5
This converts all remaining cases of the old setup_timer() API into using timer_setup(), where the callback argument is the structure already holding the struct timer_list. These should have no behavioral changes, since they just change which pointer is passed into the callback with the same available pointers after conversion. It handles the following examples, in addition to some other variations. Casting from unsigned long: void my_callback(unsigned long data) { struct something *ptr = (struct something *)data; ... } ... setup_timer(&ptr->my_timer, my_callback, ptr); and forced object casts: void my_callback(struct something *ptr) { ... } ... setup_timer(&ptr->my_timer, my_callback, (unsigned long)ptr); become: void my_callback(struct timer_list *t) { struct something *ptr = from_timer(ptr, t, my_timer); ... } ... timer_setup(&ptr->my_timer, my_callback, 0); Direct function assignments: void my_callback(unsigned long data) { struct something *ptr = (struct something *)data; ... } ... ptr->my_timer.function = my_callback; have a temporary cast added, along with converting the args: void my_callback(struct timer_list *t) { struct something *ptr = from_timer(ptr, t, my_timer); ... } ... ptr->my_timer.function = (TIMER_FUNC_TYPE)my_callback; And finally, callbacks without a data assignment: void my_callback(unsigned long data) { ... } ... setup_timer(&ptr->my_timer, my_callback, 0); have their argument renamed to verify they're unused during conversion: void my_callback(struct timer_list *unused) { ... } ... timer_setup(&ptr->my_timer, my_callback, 0); The conversion is done with the following Coccinelle script: spatch --very-quiet --all-includes --include-headers \ -I ./arch/x86/include -I ./arch/x86/include/generated \ -I ./include -I ./arch/x86/include/uapi \ -I ./arch/x86/include/generated/uapi -I ./include/uapi \ -I ./include/generated/uapi --include ./include/linux/kconfig.h \ --dir . \ --cocci-file ~/src/data/timer_setup.cocci @fix_address_of@ expression e; 2017-11-08tty: add SPDX identifiers to all remaining files in drivers/tty/Greg Kroah-Hartman1-0/+1
It's good to have SPDX identifiers in all files to make it easier to audit the kernel tree for correct licenses. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. 2017-11-02License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no licenseGreg Kroah-Hartman8-0/+8
Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license. By default all files without license information are under the default license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2. Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0' SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and Philippe Ombredanne. How this work was done: Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of the use cases: - file had no licensing information it it. - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it, - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information, Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords. The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files. The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s) to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was: - Files considered eligible had to be source code files. - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5 lines of source - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5 lines). All documentation files were explicitly excluded. The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license identifiers to apply. - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was considered to have no license information in it, and the top level COPYING file license applied. For non */uapi/* files that summary was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 11139 and resulted in the first patch in this series. If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930 and resulted in the second patch in this series. - if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in it (per prior point). Results summary: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------ GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270 GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17 LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15 GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14 ((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5 LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4 LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1 and that resulted in the third patch in this series. - when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became the concluded license(s). - when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a license but the other didn't, or they both detected different licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred. - In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics). - When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. - If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier, the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later in time. In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so they are related. Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks in about 15000 files. In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the correct identifier. Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch version early this week with: - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected license ids and scores - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+ files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the different types of files to be modified. These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to generate the patches. 2014-02-28tty: Fix low_latency BUGPeter Hurley1-3/+0
The user-settable knob, low_latency, has been the source of several BUG reports which stem from flush_to_ldisc() running in interrupt context. Since 3.12, which added several sleeping locks (termios_rwsem and buf->lock) to the input processing path, the frequency of these BUG reports has increased. Note that changes in 3.12 did not introduce this regression; sleeping locks were first added to the input processing path with the removal of the BKL from N_TTY in commit a88a69c91256418c5907c2f1f8a0ec0a36f9e6cc, 'n_tty: Fix loss of echoed characters and remove bkl from n_tty' and later in commit 38db89799bdf11625a831c5af33938dcb11908b6, 'tty: throttling race fix'. Since those changes, executing flush_to_ldisc() in interrupt_context (ie, low_latency set), is unsafe. However, since most devices do not validate if the low_latency setting is appropriate for the context (process or interrupt) in which they receive data, some reports are due to misconfiguration. Further, serial dma devices for which dma fails, resort to interrupt receiving as a backup without resetting low_latency. Historically, low_latency was used to force wake-up the reading process rather than wait for the next scheduler tick. The effect was to trim multiple milliseconds of latency from when the process would receive new data. Recent tests [1] have shown that the reading process now receives data with only 10's of microseconds latency without low_latency set. Remove the low_latency rx steering from tty_flip_buffer_push(); however, leave the knob as an optional hint to drivers that can tune their rx fifos and such like. Cleanup stale code comments regarding low_latency. 2012-11-15TTY: call tty_port_destroy in the rest of driversJiri Slaby1-0/+1
After commit "TTY: move tty buffers to tty_port", the tty buffers are not freed in some drivers. This is because tty_port_destructor is not called whenever a tty_port is freed. This was an assumption I counted with but was unfortunately untrue. So fix the drivers to fulfil this assumption. To be sure, the TTY buffers (and later some stuff) are gone along with the tty_port, we have to call tty_port_destroy at tear-down places. This is mostly where the structure containing a tty_port is freed. This patch does exactly that -- put tty_port_destroy at those places. 2012-10-02Merge branch 'for-3.7' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tj/wqLinus Torvalds2-3/+3
Pull workqueue changes from Tejun Heo: "This is workqueue updates for v3.7-rc1. A lot of activities this round including considerable API and behavior cleanups. * delayed_work combines a timer and a work item. The handling of the timer part has always been a bit clunky leading to confusing cancelation API with weird corner-case behaviors. delayed_work is updated to use new IRQ safe timer and cancelation now works as expected. * Another deficiency of delayed_work was lack of the counterpart of mod_timer() which led to cancel+queue combinations or open-coded timer+work usages. mod_delayed_work[_on]() are added. These two delayed_work changes make delayed_work provide interface and behave like timer which is executed with process context. * A work item could be executed concurrently on multiple CPUs, which is rather unintuitive and made flush_work() behavior confusing and half-broken under certain circumstances. This problem doesn't exist for non-reentrant workqueues. While non-reentrancy check isn't free, the overhead is incurred only when a work item bounces across different CPUs and even in simulated pathological scenario the overhead isn't too high. All workqueues are made non-reentrant. This removes the distinction between flush_[delayed_]work() and flush_[delayed_]_work_sync(). The former is now as strong as the latter and the specified work item is guaranteed to have finished execution of any previous queueing on return. * In addition to the various bug fixes, Lai redid and simplified CPU hotplug handling significantly. * Joonsoo introduced system_highpri_wq and used it during CPU hotplug. There are two merge commits - one to pull in IRQ safe timer from tip/timers/core and the other to pull in CPU hotplug fixes from wq/for-3.6-fixes as Lai's hotplug restructuring depended on them." Fixed a number of trivial conflicts, but the more interesting conflicts were silent ones where the deprecated interfaces had been used by new code in the merge window, and thus didn't cause any real data conflicts. Tejun pointed out a few of them, I fixed a couple more. * 'for-3.7' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tj/wq: (46 commits) workqueue: remove spurious WARN_ON_ONCE(in_irq()) from try_to_grab_pending() workqueue: use cwq_set_max_active() helper for workqueue_set_max_active() workqueue: introduce cwq_set_max_active() helper for thaw_workqueues() workqueue: remove @delayed from cwq_dec_nr_in_flight() workqueue: fix possible stall on try_to_grab_pending() of a delayed work item workqueue: use hotcpu_notifier() for workqueue_cpu_down_callback() workqueue: use __cpuinit instead of __devinit for cpu callbacks workqueue: rename manager_mutex to assoc_mutex workqueue: WORKER_REBIND is no longer necessary for idle rebinding workqueue: WORKER_REBIND is no longer necessary for busy rebinding workqueue: reimplement idle worker rebinding workqueue: deprecate __cancel_delayed_work() workqueue: reimplement cancel_delayed_work() using try_to_grab_pending() workqueue: use mod_delayed_work() instead of __cancel + queue workqueue: use irqsafe timer for delayed_work workqueue: clean up delayed_work initializers and add missing one workqueue: make deferrable delayed_work initializer names consistent workqueue: cosmetic whitespace updates for macro definitions workqueue: deprecate system_nrt[_freezable]_wq workqueue: deprecate flush[_delayed]_work_sync() ...

2012-08-20workqueue: deprecate flush[_delayed]_work_sync()Tejun Heo2-3/+3
flush[_delayed]_work_sync() are now spurious. Mark them deprecated and convert all users to flush[_delayed]_work(). If you're cc'd and wondering what's going on: Now all workqueues are non-reentrant and the regular flushes guarantee that the work item is not pending or running on any CPU on return, so there's no reason to use the sync flushes at all and they're going away. This patch doesn't make any functional difference. 2012-08-13TTY: use tty_port_register_deviceJiri Slaby1-1/+1
Currently we have no way to assign tty->port while performing tty installation. There are two ways to provide the link tty_struct => tty_port. Either by calling tty_port_install from tty->ops->install or tty_port_register_device called instead of tty_register_device when the device is being set up after connected. In this patch we modify most of the drivers to do the latter. When the drivers use tty_register_device and we have tty_port already, we switch to tty_port_register_device. So we have the tty_struct => tty_port link for free for those.
