2018-09-10tty: hvc: hvc_write() fix break conditionNicholas Piggin1-1/+6
Commit 550ddadcc758 ("tty: hvc: hvc_write() may sleep") broke the termination condition in case the driver stops accepting characters. This can result in unnecessary polling of the busy driver. Restore it by testing the hvc_push return code. 2018-09-10tty: hvc: hvc_poll() fix read loop batchingNicholas Piggin1-2/+22
Commit ec97eaad1383 ("tty: hvc: hvc_poll() break hv read loop") removes get_chars batching entirely, which slows down large console operations like paste -- virtio console "feels worse than a 9600 baud serial line," reports Matteo. This adds back batching in a more latency friendly way. If the caller can sleep then we try to fill the entire flip buffer, releasing the lock and scheduling between each iteration. If it can not sleep, then batches are limited to 128 bytes. Matteo confirms this fixes the performance problem. Latency testing the powerpc OPAL console with OpenBMC UART with a large paste shows about 0.25ms latency, which seems reasonable. 10ms latencies were typical for this case before the latency breaking work, so we still see most of the benefit. kopald-1204 0d.h. 5us : hvc_poll <-hvc_handle_interrupt kopald-1204 0d.h. 5us : __hvc_poll <-hvc_handle_interrupt kopald-1204 0d.h. 5us : _raw_spin_lock_irqsave <-__hvc_poll kopald-1204 0d.h. 5us : tty_port_tty_get <-__hvc_poll kopald-1204 0d.h. 6us : _raw_spin_lock_irqsave <-tty_port_tty_get kopald-1204 0d.h. 6us : _raw_spin_unlock_irqrestore <-tty_port_tty_get kopald-1204 0d.h. 6us : tty_buffer_request_room <-__hvc_poll kopald-1204 0d.h. 7us : __tty_buffer_request_room <-__hvc_poll kopald-1204 0d.h. 7us+: opal_get_chars <-__hvc_poll kopald-1204 0d.h. 36us : tty_buffer_request_room <-__hvc_poll kopald-1204 0d.h. 36us : __tty_buffer_request_room <-__hvc_poll kopald-1204 0d.h. 36us+: opal_get_chars <-__hvc_poll kopald-1204 0d.h. 65us : tty_buffer_request_room <-__hvc_poll kopald-1204 0d.h. 65us : __tty_buffer_request_room <-__hvc_poll kopald-1204 0d.h. 66us+: opal_get_chars <-__hvc_poll kopald-1204 0d.h. 94us : tty_buffer_request_room <-__hvc_poll kopald-1204 0d.h. 95us : __tty_buffer_request_room <-__hvc_poll kopald-1204 0d.h. 95us+: opal_get_chars <-__hvc_poll kopald-1204 0d.h. 124us : tty_buffer_request_room <-__hvc_poll kopald-1204 0d.h. 124us : __tty_buffer_request_room <-__hvc_poll kopald-1204 0d.h. 125us+: opal_get_chars <-__hvc_poll kopald-1204 0d.h. 154us : tty_buffer_request_room <-__hvc_poll kopald-1204 0d.h. 154us : __tty_buffer_request_room <-__hvc_poll kopald-1204 0d.h. 154us+: opal_get_chars <-__hvc_poll kopald-1204 0d.h. 183us : tty_buffer_request_room <-__hvc_poll kopald-1204 0d.h. 184us : __tty_buffer_request_room <-__hvc_poll kopald-1204 0d.h. 184us+: opal_get_chars <-__hvc_poll kopald-1204 0d.h. 213us : tty_buffer_request_room <-__hvc_poll kopald-1204 0d.h. 213us : __tty_buffer_request_room <-__hvc_poll kopald-1204 0d.h. 213us+: opal_get_chars <-__hvc_poll kopald-1204 0d.h. 242us : _raw_spin_unlock_irqrestore <-__hvc_poll kopald-1204 0d.h. 242us : tty_flip_buffer_push <-__hvc_poll kopald-1204 0d.h. 243us : queue_work_on <-tty_flip_buffer_push kopald-1204 0d.h. 243us : tty_kref_put <-__hvc_poll kopald-1204 0d.h. 243us : hvc_kick <-hvc_handle_interrupt kopald-1204 0d.h. 243us : wake_up_process <-hvc_kick kopald-1204 0d.h. 244us : try_to_wake_up <-hvc_kick kopald-1204 0d.h. 244us : _raw_spin_lock_irqsave <-try_to_wake_up kopald-1204 0d.h. 244us : _raw_spin_unlock_irqrestore <-try_to_wake_up Reported-by: Matteo Croce <mcroce@redhat.com> Tested-by: Matteo Croce <mcroce@redhat.com> Tested-by: Jason Gunthorpe <jgg@mellanox.com> Tested-by: Leon Romanovsky <leonro@mellanox.com> Signed-off-by: Nicholas Piggin <npiggin@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@linuxfoundation.org>
2018-09-10tty: hvc: hvc_poll() fix read loop hangNicholas Piggin1-2/+5
Commit ec97eaad1383 ("tty: hvc: hvc_poll() break hv read loop") causes the virtio console to hang at times (e.g., if you paste a bunch of characters to it. The reason is that get_chars must return 0 before we can be sure the driver will kick or poll input again, but this change only scheduled a poll if get_chars had returned a full count. Change this to poll on any > 0 count. 2018-07-24tty: hvc: remove unexplained "just in case" spin delayNicholas Piggin1-7/+1
This delay was in the very first OPAL console commit 6.5 years ago, and came from the vio hvc driver. The firmware console has hardened sufficiently to remove it. 2018-07-24powerpc/powernv: implement opal_put_chars_atomicNicholas Piggin1-5/+13
The RAW console does not need writes to be atomic, so relax opal_put_chars to be able to do partial writes, and implement an _atomic variant which does not take a spinlock. This API is used in xmon, so the less locking that is used, the better chance there is that a crash can be debugged. 2018-07-24powerpc/powernv: move opal console flushing to udbgNicholas Piggin1-0/+5
OPAL console writes do not have to synchronously flush firmware / hardware buffers unless they are going through the udbg path. Remove the unconditional flushing from opal_put_chars. Flush if there was no space in the buffer as an optimisation (callers loop waiting for success in that case). udbg flushing is moved to udbg_opal_putc. 2018-07-23tty: hvc: introduce the hv_ops.flush operation for hvc driversNicholas Piggin2-2/+34
Use .flush to wait for drivers to flush their console outside of the spinlock, to reduce lock/irq latencies. Flush the hvc console driver after each write, which can help messages make it out to the console after a crash. 2018-07-23tty: hvc: hvc_write() may sleepNicholas Piggin1-15/+21
Rework the hvc_write loop to drop and re-take the spinlock on each iteration, add a cond_resched. Don't bother with an initial hvc_push initially, which makes the logic simpler -- just do a hvc_push on each time around the loop. 2018-07-23tty: hvc: hvc_poll() break hv read loopNicholas Piggin1-43/+45
Avoid looping with the spinlock held while there is read data being returned from the hv driver. The kzalloc() function has a 2-factor argument form, kcalloc(). This patch replaces cases of: kzalloc(a * b, gfp) with: kcalloc(a * b, gfp) as well as handling cases of: kzalloc(a * b * c, gfp) with: kzalloc(array3_size(a, b, c), gfp) as it's slightly less ugly than: kzalloc_array(array_size(a, b), c, gfp) This does, however, attempt to ignore constant size factors like: kzalloc(4 * 1024, gfp) though any constants defined via macros get caught up in the conversion. 2018-06-03hvc_opal: don't set tb_ticks_per_usec in udbg_init_opal_common()Stewart Smith1-1/+0
time_init() will set up tb_ticks_per_usec based on reality. time_init() is called *after* udbg_init_opal_common() during boot. from arch/powerpc/kernel/time.c: unsigned long tb_ticks_per_usec = 100; /* sane default */ Currently, all powernv systems have a timebase frequency of 512mhz (512000000/1000000 == 0x200) - although there's nothing written down anywhere that I can find saying that we couldn't make that different based on the requirements in the ISA. So, we've been (accidentally) thwacking the (currently) correct (for powernv at least) value for tb_ticks_per_usec earlier than we otherwise would have. The "sane default" seems to be adequate for our purposes between udbg_init_opal_common() and time_init() being called, and if it isn't, then we should probably be setting it somewhere that isn't hvc_opal.c! 2018-03-09tty: New RISC-V SBI console driverPalmer Dabbelt3-0/+71
The RISC-V ISA defines a simple console that is availiable via SBI calls on all systems. The SBI console is designed to be availiable at all times, so while it's most natural to use this as an early printk target it's also possible to use this as the system console when there isn't a better one availiable. This patch adds support for the RISC-V SBI console via the HVC infastructure. It's entirely independent from our early printk support, which results in early boot messages appearing twice over the SBI console. As far as I can tell that's the fault of our early printk support (we should support earlycon) as opposed to this driver. There is one checkpatch.pl warning here: to check the MAINTAINERS file. They're all matched by the "K: riscv" line. Signed-off-by: Palmer Dabbelt <palmer@sifive.com> Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@linuxfoundation.org>

2017-11-08tty: hvc: Remove redundant license textGreg Kroah-Hartman12-150/+1
Now that the SPDX tag is in all tty files, that identifies the license in a specific and legally-defined manner. So the extra GPL text wording can be removed as it is no longer needed at all. This is done on a quest to remove the 700+ different ways that files in the kernel describe the GPL license text. And there's unneeded stuff like the address (sometimes incorrect) for the FSF which is never needed. No copyright headers or other non-license-description text was removed. 2017-11-02License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no licenseGreg Kroah-Hartman4-0/+4
Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license. By default all files without license information are under the default license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2. Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0' SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and Philippe Ombredanne. How this work was done: Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of the use cases: - file had no licensing information it it. - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it, - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information, Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords. The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files. The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s) to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was: - Files considered eligible had to be source code files. - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5 lines of source - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5 lines). All documentation files were explicitly excluded. The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license identifiers to apply. - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was considered to have no license information in it, and the top level COPYING file license applied. For non */uapi/* files that summary was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 11139 and resulted in the first patch in this series. If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930 and resulted in the second patch in this series. - if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in it (per prior point). Results summary: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------ GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270 GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17 LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15 GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14 ((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5 LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4 LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1 and that resulted in the third patch in this series. - when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became the concluded license(s). - when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a license but the other didn't, or they both detected different licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred. - In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics). - When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. - If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier, the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later in time. In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so they are related. Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks in about 15000 files. In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the correct identifier. Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch version early this week with: - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected license ids and scores - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+ files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the different types of files to be modified. These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to generate the patches. This avoids problems with the percpu allocator on systems with very sparse NUMA layouts. - STRICT_KERNEL_RWX support on PPC32. - A new sched domain topology for Power9, to capture the fact that pairs of cores may share an L2 cache. - Power9 support for VAS, which is a new mechanism for accessing coprocessors, and initial support for using it with the NX compression accelerator. - Major work on the instruction emulation support, adding support for many new instructions, and reworking it so it can be used to implement the emulation needed to fixup alignment faults. - Support for guests under PowerVM to use the Power9 XIVE interrupt controller. 2017-07-31powerpc/udbg: Reduce the footgun potential of EARLY_DEBUG_LPAR(_HVSI)Michael Ellerman1-0/+12
For debugging very early boot problems we have CONFIG_PPC_EARLY_DEBUG, which allows configuring the kernel such that it unconditionally writes to a particular type of console, regardless of whether that console exists or not. This is useful sometimes when the kernel crashes before it can even determine what platform it's on, and therefore what consoles exist. However if you boot a kernel built this way on a different platform, it will generally crash because it writes to a console that doesn't exist. A particularly nasty instance of this is if you enable the hypervisor console early debug, and then boot that kernel on bare metal. The result is that the kernel calls "the hypervisor" very early in boot, but the kernel *is* the hypervisor, so we jump to the system call handler and start executing all sorts of code that isn't ready to be run. This may lead to a machine check or check stop depending on how lucky you are. Luckily there is an easy way to avoid this particular case. We simply read the MSR before installing the hooks, and if we see MSR_HV is set then we are the hypervisor and we definitely should not use the hypervisor console. 2017-06-12s390/hvc_iucv: fix broken Kconfig select statementHeiko Carstens1-1/+1
Select statements in Kconfig do not necessarily enable all required dependencies and can lead to broken configs. This is also the case for the "select IUCV" statement within HVC_IUCV: warning: (HVC_IUCV) selects IUCV which has unmet direct dependencies (NET && S390) Just add the missing "depends on NET" to avoid broken configs. 2016-07-27tty/hvc: Use opal irqchip interface if availableSam Mendoza-Jonas1-1/+7
Update the hvc driver to use the OPAL irqchip if made available by the running firmware. If it is not present, the driver falls back to the existing OPAL event number. Signed-off-by: Samuel Mendoza-Jonas <sam@mendozajonas.com> Signed-off-by: Michael Ellerman <mpe@ellerman.id.au>
2016-07-27tty/hvc: Use IRQF_SHARED for OPAL hvc consolesSam Mendoza-Jonas3-2/+11
Commit 2def86a7200c ("hvc: Convert to using interrupts instead of opal events") enabled the use of interrupts in the hvc_driver for OPAL platforms. However on machines with more than one hvc console, any console after the first will fail to register an interrupt handler in notifier_add_irq() since all consoles share the same IRQ number but do not set the IRQF_SHARED flag: genirq: Flags mismatch irq 31. 00000000 (hvc_console) vs. 00000000 (hvc_console) hvc_open: request_irq failed with rc -16. This error propagates up to hvc_open() and the console is closed, but OPAL will still generate interrupts that are not handled, leading to rcu_sched stall warnings. Set IRQF_SHARED when calling request_irq(), allowing additional consoles to start properly. This is only set for consoles handled by hvc_opal_probe(), leaving other types unaffected. 2016-02-26hvc_xen: fix xenboot for DomUsStefano Stabellini1-6/+26
The xenboot early console has been partially broken for DomU for a long time: the output would only go to the hypervisor via hypercall (HYPERVISOR_console_io), while it wouldn't actually go to the DomU console. The reason is that domU_write_console would return early as no xencons structs are configured for it. Add an appropriate xencons struct for xenboot from the xenboot setup callback. 2016-02-26hvc_xen: add earlycon supportStefano Stabellini1-0/+16
Introduce EARLYCON support in hvc_xen, useful for early debugging on arm and arm64, where xen early_printk is not available. It is different from xenboot_write_console on x86 in two ways: - it does not return if !xen_pv_domain(), not only because ARM guests are xen_hvm_domain(), but also because we want to capture all the early boot messages, before xen support is discovered - it does not try to print to the domU console at all, because xen support will only be discovered at a later point Signed-off-by: Stefano Stabellini <stefano.stabellini@eu.citrix.com> Reviewed-by: Boris Ostrovsky <boris.ostrovsky@oracle.com>
