2014-10-07net: better IFF_XMIT_DST_RELEASE supportEric Dumazet1-1/+1
Testing xmit_more support with netperf and connected UDP sockets, I found strange dst refcount false sharing. Current handling of IFF_XMIT_DST_RELEASE is not optimal. Dropping dst in validate_xmit_skb() is certainly too late in case packet was queued by cpu X but dequeued by cpu Y The logical point to take care of drop/force is in __dev_queue_xmit() before even taking qdisc lock. As Julian Anastasov pointed out, need for skb_dst() might come from some packet schedulers or classifiers. This patch adds new helper to cleanly express needs of various drivers or qdiscs/classifiers. Drivers that need skb_dst() in their ndo_start_xmit() should call following helper in their setup instead of the prior : dev->priv_flags &= ~IFF_XMIT_DST_RELEASE; -> netif_keep_dst(dev); Instead of using a single bit, we use two bits, one being eventually rebuilt in bonding/team drivers. The other one, is permanent and blocks IFF_XMIT_DST_RELEASE being rebuilt in bonding/team. Eventually, we could add something smarter later. schedule() schedule(), io_schedule() and schedule_timeout() always return with TASK_RUNNING state set, so one more setting is unnecessary. (All places in patch are visible good, only exception is kiblnd_scheduler() from: drivers/staging/lustre/lnet/klnds/o2iblnd/o2iblnd_cb.c Its schedule() is one line above standard 3 lines of unified diff) No places where set_current_state() is used for mb(). 2014-09-02qeth: don't query for info if hardware not ready.Eugene Crosser3-7/+17
When qeth device is queried for ethtool data, hardware operation is performed to extract the necessary information from the card. If the card is not online at the moment (e.g. it is undergoing recovery), this operation produces undesired effects like temporarily freezing the system. This patch prevents execution of the hardware query operation when the card is not online. In such case, ioctl() operation returns error with errno ENODEV. Because of the embedded qdio_buffer array struct qeth_qdio_out_q is quite large resulting in an order 4 allocation. This is likely to fail at runtime and wastes a lot of memory since the actual size is just about 34K. Since there is no need for this buffer to be contiguous split it up using qdio buffer helpers. 2014-04-28qeth: Fix default queue setting in priority queueingStefan Raspl1-3/+5
The default queue for queueing modes prio_queueing_prec and prio_queueing_tos is supposed to be QETH_DEFAULT_QUEUE. However, neither mode will reset the default default_out_queue value when enabled, leaving a previously set value activate as the default. E.g. enabling one of the fixed queueing modes, e.g. no_prio_queueing:0, and successively switching to any of the prio_queueing_* modes will leave default_out_queue at the previous (wrong) value 0. The maximum usable buffer size of the s390 debug feature (when using the sprintf_view) is 11 * sizeof(long) (1 pointer for the format string + 10 arguments). When a larger buffer size is specified the additional memory is unused and wasted per debug entry. So reducing the buffer size to its maximum (or to the actual buffer size used) will make more precious debug feature space usable. For pci_msg, chsc_msg, and cio_crw we use the additional usable dbf space to reduce the number of allocated pages. Pull networking updates from David Miller: 1) The addition of nftables. No longer will we need protocol aware firewall filtering modules, it can all live in userspace. At the core of nftables is a, for lack of a better term, virtual machine that executes byte codes to inspect packet or metadata (arriving interface index, etc.) and make verdict decisions. Besides support for loading packet contents and comparing them, the interpreter supports lookups in various datastructures as fundamental operations. For example sets are supports, and therefore one could create a set of whitelist IP address entries which have ACCEPT verdicts attached to them, and use the appropriate byte codes to do such lookups. Since the interpreted code is composed in userspace, userspace can do things like optimize things before giving it to the kernel. Another major improvement is the capability of atomically updating portions of the ruleset. In the existing netfilter implementation, one has to update the entire rule set in order to make a change and this is very expensive. Userspace tools exist to create nftables rules using existing netfilter rule sets, but both kernel implementations will need to co-exist for quite some time as we transition from the old to the new stuff. Kudos to Patrick McHardy, Pablo Neira Ayuso, and others who have worked so hard on this. 2) Daniel Borkmann and Hannes Frederic Sowa made several improvements to our pseudo-random number generator, mostly used for things like UDP port randomization and netfitler, amongst other things. In particular the taus88 generater is updated to taus113, and test cases are added. 3) Support 64-bit rates in HTB and TBF schedulers, from Eric Dumazet and Yang Yingliang. 4) Add support for new 577xx tigon3 chips to tg3 driver, from Nithin Sujir. 5) Fix two fatal flaws in TCP dynamic right sizing, from Eric Dumazet, Neal Cardwell, and Yuchung Cheng. 6) Allow IP_TOS and IP_TTL to be specified in sendmsg() ancillary control message data, much like other socket option attributes. From Francesco Fusco. 7) Allow applications to specify a cap on the rate computed automatically by the kernel for pacing flows, via a new SO_MAX_PACING_RATE socket option. Fix various weird constructions of strncpy(dst, src, strlen(src)). Length limits should be about the space available in the destination, not repurposed as a method to either always include or always exclude a trailing NULL byte. Either the NULL should always be copied (using strlcpy), or it should not be copied (using something like memcpy). Readable code should not depend on the weird behavior of strncpy when it hits the length limit. Better to avoid the anti-pattern entirely. blkt settings (or LAN idle settings) for an OSA Express card determine when and how often an OSA Express card tells the operating system about new incoming packets. The semantic of these settings has changed starting with OSA Express3. Currently the qeth standard settings apply to OSA Express2 and older generations of OSA Express cards, while new generations of OSA Express cards require extra coding of their reasonable default. To cover future OSA Express generations the qeth default standard blkt setting is now the desired setting for OSA generations starting with OSA Express3, while the fixed set of older OSA Express cards receives its blkt settings explicitly.
