Looks like almost all changes to this driver had been tree-wide
refactoring since git era begun. There is one commit from Al
15 years ago which could potentially be fixing a real bug.
The driver is using virt_to_bus() and is a real magnet for pointless
cleanups. It seems unlikely to have real users. Let's try to shed
this maintenance burden.

type3_infoblock()
The definition of macro MOTO_SROM_BUG is:
#define MOTO_SROM_BUG (lp->active == 8 && (get_unaligned_le32(
dev->dev_addr) & 0x00ffffff) == 0x3e0008)
and the if statement
if (MOTO_SROM_BUG) lp->active = 0;
using this macro indicates lp->active could be 8. If lp->active is 8 and
the second comparison of this macro is false. lp->active will remain 8 in:
lp->phy[lp->active].gep = (*p ? p : NULL); p += (2 * (*p) + 1);
lp->phy[lp->active].rst = (*p ? p : NULL); p += (2 * (*p) + 1);
lp->phy[lp->active].mc = get_unaligned_le16(p); p += 2;
lp->phy[lp->active].ana = get_unaligned_le16(p); p += 2;
lp->phy[lp->active].fdx = get_unaligned_le16(p); p += 2;
lp->phy[lp->active].ttm = get_unaligned_le16(p); p += 2;
lp->phy[lp->active].mci = *p;
However, the length of array lp->phy is 8, so array overflows can occur.
To fix these possible array overflows, we first check lp->active and then
return -EINVAL if it is greater or equal to ARRAY_SIZE(lp->phy) (i.e. 8).

On i386, when builtin (not a loadable module), the winbond-840 driver
inspects boot_cpu_data to see what CPU family it is running on, and
then acts on that data. The "family" struct member (x86) does not exist
when running on UML, so prevent that test and do the default action.
Prevents this build error on UML + i386:
../drivers/net/ethernet/dec/tulip/winbond-840.c: In function ‘init_registers’:

Commit 406f42fa0d3c ("net-next: When a bond have a massive amount
of VLANs...") introduced a rbtree for faster Ethernet address look
up. To maintain netdev->dev_addr in this tree we need to make all
the writes to it got through appropriate helpers.
This patch takes care of drivers which cast netdev->dev_addr to
a 16bit type, often with an explicit byte order.

Most users of ndo_do_ioctl are ethernet drivers that implement
the MII commands SIOCGMIIPHY/SIOCGMIIREG/SIOCSMIIREG, or hardware
timestamping with SIOCSHWTSTAMP/SIOCGHWTSTAMP.
Separate these from the few drivers that use ndo_do_ioctl to
implement SIOCBOND, SIOCBR and SIOCWANDEV commands.
This is a purely cosmetic change intended to help readers find
their way through the implementation.

The tulip driver has a debugging method over ioctl built-in, but it
does not actually check the command type, which may end up leading
to random behavior when trying to run other ioctls on it.
Change the driver to use ndo_siocdevprivate and limit the execution
further to the first private command code. If anyone still has tools
to run these debugging commands, they might have to be patched for
it if they pass different ioctl command.
The function has existed in this form since the driver was merged in
Linux-1.1.86.

The register reads should be OK, because the current
implementation of readl and friends will always execute even
without an lvalue.
When it makes sense, just remove the lvalue assignment and the
local. Other times, just remove the offending code, and
occasionally, just mark the variable as maybe unused since it
could be used in an ifdef or debug scenario.

Two minor conflicts:
1) net/ipv4/route.c, adding a new local variable while
moving another local variable and removing it's
initial assignment.
2) drivers/net/dsa/microchip/ksz9477.c, overlapping changes.
One pretty prints the port mode differently, whilst another
changes the driver to try and obtain the port mode from
the port node rather than the switch node.

It has been compile tested.
When memory is allocated in 'tulip_init_one()' GFP_KERNEL can be used
because it is a probe function and no lock is taken in the between.

The wrappers in include/linux/pci-dma-compat.h should go away.
The patch has been generated with the coccinelle script below and has been
hand modified to replace GFP_ with a correct flag.
It has been compile tested.
When memory is allocated in 'de_alloc_rings()' GFP_KERNEL can be used
because it is only called from 'de_open()' which is a '.ndo_open'
function. Such functions are synchronized using the rtnl_lock() semaphore
and no lock is taken in the between.

Organize driver documentation by device type. Most documents
have fairly verbose yet uninformative names, so let users
first select a well defined device type, and then search for
a particular driver.
While at it rename the section from Vendor drivers to
Hardware drivers. This seems more accurate, besides people
sometimes refer to out-of-tree drivers as vendor drivers.

With stable support of generic PM callbacks, drivers no longer need to use
legacy .suspend() and .resume() in which they had to maintain PCI states
changes and device's power state themselves.
Earlier, .resume() was invoking pci_enable_device(). Drivers should not
call PCI legacy helper functions, hence, it was removed. This should not
change the behavior of the device as this function is called by PCI core
if somehow pm_ops is not able to bind with the driver, else, required tasks
are managed by the core itself.

With legacy PM hooks, it was the responsibility of a driver to manage PCI
states and also the device's power state. The generic approach is to let the
PCI core handle the work.
The legacy suspend() and resume() were making use of
pci_read/write_config_dword() to enable/disable wol. Driver editing
configuration registers of a device is not recommended. Thus replace them
all with device_wakeup_enable/disable().

Since commit 84af7a6194e4 ("checkpatch: kconfig: prefer 'help' over
'---help---'"), the number of '---help---' has been gradually
decreasing, but there are still more than 2400 instances.
This commit finishes the conversion. While I touched the lines,
I also fixed the indentation.
There are a variety of indentation styles found.
a) 4 spaces + '---help---'
b) 7 spaces + '---help---'
c) 8 spaces + '---help---'
d) 1 space + 1 tab + '---help---'
e) 1 tab + '---help---' (correct indentation)
f) 1 tab + 1 space + '---help---'
g) 1 tab + 2 spaces + '---help---'
In order to convert all of them to 1 tab + 'help', I ran the
following commend:
$ find . -name 'Kconfig*' | xargs sed -i 's/^[[:space:]]*---help---/\thelp/'

The current codebase makes use of the zero-length array language
extension to the C90 standard, but the preferred mechanism to declare
variable-length types such as these ones is a flexible array member[1][2],
introduced in C99:
struct foo {
int stuff;
struct boo array[];
};
By making use of the mechanism above, we will get a compiler warning
in case the flexible array does not occur last in the structure, which
will help us prevent some kind of undefined behavior bugs from being
inadvertently introduced[3] to the codebase from now on.
Also, notice that, dynamic memory allocations won't be affected by
this change:
"Flexible array members have incomplete type, and so the sizeof operator
may not be applied. As a quirk of the original implementation of
zero-length arrays, sizeof evaluates to zero."[1]
This issue was found with the help of Coccinelle.
