2022-10-05cpufreq: amd-pstate: Add explanation for X86_AMD_PSTATE_UTMeng Li1-0/+8
This kernel module is used for testing. It's safe to say M here. It can also be built-in without X86_AMD_PSTATE enabled. Currently, only tests for amd-pstate are supported. If X86_AMD_PSTATE is set disabled, it can tell the users test can only run on amd-pstate driver, please set X86_AMD_PSTATE enabled. In the future, comparison tests will be added. It can set amd-pstate disabled and set acpi-cpufreq enabled to run test cases, then compare the test results. 2021-12-30cpufreq: amd-pstate: Introduce a new AMD P-State driver to support future ↵Huang Rui1-0/+17
processors AMD P-State is the AMD CPU performance scaling driver that introduces a new CPU frequency control mechanism on AMD Zen based CPU series in Linux kernel. The new mechanism is based on Collaborative processor performance control (CPPC) which is finer grain frequency management than legacy ACPI hardware P-States. Current AMD CPU platforms are using the ACPI P-states driver to manage CPU frequency and clocks with switching only in 3 P-states. AMD P-State is to replace the ACPI P-states controls, allows a flexible, low-latency interface for the Linux kernel to directly communicate the performance hints to hardware. AMD P-State leverages the Linux kernel governors such as *schedutil*, *ondemand*, etc. to manage the performance hints which are provided by CPPC hardware functionality. The first version for AMD P-State is to support one of the Zen3 processors, and we will support more in future after we verify the hardware and SBIOS functionalities. There are two types of hardware implementations for AMD P-State: one is full MSR support and another is shared memory support. It can use X86_FEATURE_CPPC feature flag to distinguish the different types. Using the new AMD P-State method + kernel governors (*schedutil*, *ondemand*, ...) to manage the frequency update is the most appropriate bridge between AMD Zen based hardware processor and Linux kernel, the processor is able to adjust to the most efficiency frequency according to the kernel scheduler loading. Please check the detailed CPU feature and MSR register description in Processor Programming Reference (PPR) for AMD Family 19h Model 51h, Revision A1 Processors: https://www.amd.com/system/files/TechDocs/56569-A1-PUB.zip Signed-off-by: Huang Rui <ray.huang@amd.com> Signed-off-by: Rafael J. Since commit 84af7a6194e4 ("checkpatch: kconfig: prefer 'help' over '---help---'"), the number of '---help---' has been gradually decreasing, but there are still more than 2400 instances. This commit finishes the conversion. While I touched the lines, I also fixed the indentation. There are a variety of indentation styles found. a) 4 spaces + '---help---' b) 7 spaces + '---help---' c) 8 spaces + '---help---' d) 1 space + 1 tab + '---help---' e) 1 tab + '---help---' (correct indentation) f) 1 tab + 1 space + '---help---' g) 1 tab + 2 spaces + '---help---' In order to convert all of them to 1 tab + 'help', I ran the following commend: $ find . -name 'Kconfig*' | xargs sed -i 's/^[[:space:]]*---help---/\thelp/' Signed-off-by: Masahiro Yamada <masahiroy@kernel.org>

2016-11-30sched/x86: Change CONFIG_SCHED_ITMT to CONFIG_SCHED_MC_PRIOTim Chen1-1/+1
Rename CONFIG_SCHED_ITMT for Intel Turbo Boost Max Technology 3.0 to CONFIG_SCHED_MC_PRIO. This makes the configuration extensible in future to other architectures that wish to similarly establish CPU core priorities support in the scheduler. The description in Kconfig is updated to reflect this change with added details for better clarity. The configuration is explicitly default-y, to enable the feature on CPUs that have this feature. It has no effect on non-TBM3 CPUs. 2016-04-28cpufreq: intel_pstate: Enforce _PPC limitsSrinivas Pandruvada1-0/+1
Use ACPI _PPC notification to limit max P state driver will request. ACPI _PPC change notification is sent by BIOS to limit max P state in several cases: - Reduce impact of platform thermal condition - When Config TDP feature is used, a changed _PPC is sent to follow TDP change - Remote node managers in server want to control platform power via baseboard management controller (BMC) This change registers with ACPI processor performance lib so that _PPC changes are notified to cpufreq core, which in turns will result in call to .setpolicy() callback. Also the way _PSS table identifies a turbo frequency is not compatible to max turbo frequency in intel_pstate, so the very first entry in _PSS needs to be adjusted. 2015-11-19Revert "cpufreq: intel_pstate: Use ACPI perf configuration"Rafael J. Wysocki1-1/+0
Revert commit 37afb0003242 (cpufreq: intel_pstate: Use ACPI perf configuration) that is reported to cause a regression to happen on a system where invalid data are returned by the ACPI _PSS object. Since that commit makes assumptions regarding the _PSS output correctness that may turn out to be overly optimistic in general, there is a concern that it may introduce regression on more systems, so it's better to revert it now and we'll revisit the underlying issue in the next cycle with a more robust solution. 2015-10-15cpufreq: intel_pstate: Use ACPI perf configurationSrinivas Pandruvada1-0/+1
Use ACPI _PSS to limit the Intel P State turbo, max and min ratios. This driver uses acpi processor perf lib calls to register performance. The following logic is used to adjust Intel P state driver limits: - If there is no turbo entry in _PSS, then disable Intel P state turbo and limit to non turbo max - If the non turbo max ratio is more than _PSS max non turbo value, then set the max non turbo ratio to _PSS non turbo max - If the min ratio is less than _PSS min then change the min ratio matching _PSS min - Scale the _PSS turbo frequency to max turbo frequency based on control value. 2013-02-15cpufreq / intel_pstate: Change to disallow module buildDirk Brandewie1-6/+1
Load order is important in order for intel_pstate to take over as the default scaling driver from acpi-cpufreq. If both are built-in, acpi-cpufreq uses late_initcall() and intel_pstate uses device_initcall() so it will be able to register as the scaling before acpi-cpufreq for the processors supported by intel_pstate. If acpi-cpufreq is built as a module then intel_pstate still gets first option to become the scaling driver.
