2018-08-02block: Switch struct packet_command to use struct scsi_sense_hdrKees Cook1-18/+18
There is a lot of needless struct request_sense usage in the CDROM code. These can all be struct scsi_sense_hdr instead, to avoid any confusion over their respective structure sizes. This patch is a lot of noise changing "sense" to "sshdr", but the final code is more readable to distinguish between "sense" meaning "struct request_sense" and "sshdr" meaning "struct scsi_sense_hdr". 2017-08-23block: replace bi_bdev with a gendisk pointer and partitions indexChristoph Hellwig1-6/+5
This way we don't need a block_device structure to submit I/O. The block_device has different life time rules from the gendisk and request_queue and is usually only available when the block device node is open. Other callers need to explicitly create one (e.g. the lightnvm passthrough code, or the new nvme multipathing code). For the actual I/O path all that we need is the gendisk, which exists once per block device. But given that the block layer also does partition remapping we additionally need a partition index, which is used for said remapping in generic_make_request. Note that all the block drivers generally want request_queue or sometimes the gendisk, so this removes a layer of indirection all over the stack. 2017-06-20block: Make most scsi_req_init() calls implicitBart Van Assche1-1/+0
Instead of explicitly calling scsi_req_init() after blk_get_request(), call that function from inside blk_get_request(). Add an .initialize_rq_fn() callback function to the block drivers that need it. Merge the IDE .init_rq_fn() function into .initialize_rq_fn() because it is too small to keep it as a separate function. Keep the scsi_req_init() call in ide_prep_sense() because it follows a blk_rq_init() call. 2017-06-18pktcdvd: use bio_clone_fast() instead of bio_clone()NeilBrown1-2/+10
pktcdvd doesn't change the bi_io_vec of the clone bio, so it is more efficient to use bio_clone_fast(), and not clone the bi_io_vec. This requires providing a bio_set, and it is safest to provide a dedicated bio_set rather than sharing fs_bio_set, which filesytems use. This new bio_set, pkt_bio_set, can also be use for the bio_split() call as the two allocations (bio_clone_fast, and bio_split) are independent, neither can block a bio allocated by the other. 2017-04-20scsi: introduce a result field in struct scsi_requestChristoph Hellwig1-1/+1
This passes on the scsi_cmnd result field to users of passthrough requests. Currently we abuse req->errors for this purpose, but that field will go away in its current form. 2017-01-31block: fold cmd_type into the REQ_OP_ spaceChristoph Hellwig1-1/+1
Instead of keeping two levels of indirection for requests types, fold it all into the operations. The little caveat here is that previously cmd_type only applied to struct request, while the request and bio op fields were set to plain REQ_OP_READ/WRITE even for passthrough operations. Instead this patch adds new REQ_OP_* for SCSI passthrough and driver private requests, althought it has to add two for each so that we can communicate the data in/out nature of the request. 2016-11-07pktcdvd: don't scribble over the bvec arrayChristoph Hellwig1-41/+6
Hi Peter, hi Jens, I've been looking over the multi page bio vec work again recently, and one of the stumbling blocks is raw biovec access in the pktcdvd. The first issue is that it directly sets up the page and offset pointers in the biovec just before calling bio_add_page. As bio_add_page already does the setup it's trivial to just switch it to stack variables for the arguments. The second issue is the copy code in pkt_make_local_copy, which effectively is an opencoded version of bio_copy_data except that it skips pages that already are the same in the ѕource and destination. But we look at the only calleer we just set up the bio using bio_add_page to point exactly to the page array that pkt_make_local_copy compares, so the pages will always be the same and we can just remove this function. Note that all this is done based on code inspection, I don't have any packet writing hardware myself. Signed-off-by: Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de> Signed-off-by: Jens Axboe <axboe@fb.com>
2016-10-28block: split out request-only flags into a new namespaceChristoph Hellwig1-1/+1

This patch adds a new req_flags_t rq_flags field to struct request for them, and thus dramatically shrinks the number of common requests. It also removes the unfortunate situation where we have to fit the fields from the same enum into 32 bits for struct bio and 64 bits for struct request. The latter should clear __GFP_DIRECT_RECLAIM so kswapd will still wake. As clearing __GFP_WAIT behaves differently, there is a risk that people will clear the wrong flags. 2015-08-13block: make generic_make_request handle arbitrarily sized biosKent Overstreet1-2/+4
The way the block layer is currently written, it goes to great lengths to avoid having to split bios; upper layer code (such as bio_add_page()) checks what the underlying device can handle and tries to always create bios that don't need to be split. But this approach becomes unwieldy and eventually breaks down with stacked devices and devices with dynamic limits, and it adds a lot of complexity. If the block layer could split bios as needed, we could eliminate a lot of complexity elsewhere - particularly in stacked drivers. Code that creates bios can then create whatever size bios are convenient, and more importantly stacked drivers don't have to deal with both their own bio size limitations and the limitations of the (potentially multiple) devices underneath them. In the future this will let us delete merge_bvec_fn and a bunch of other code. We do this by adding calls to blk_queue_split() to the various make_request functions that need it - a few can already handle arbitrary size bios. Note that we add the call _after_ any call to blk_queue_bounce(); this means that blk_queue_split() and blk_recalc_rq_segments() don't need to be concerned with bouncing affecting segment merging. Some make_request_fn() callbacks were simple enough to audit and verify they don't need blk_queue_split() calls. The skipped ones are: * nfhd_make_request (arch/m68k/emu/nfblock.c) * axon_ram_make_request (arch/powerpc/sysdev/axonram.c) * simdisk_make_request (arch/xtensa/platforms/iss/simdisk.c) * brd_make_request (ramdisk - drivers/block/brd.c) * mtip_submit_request (drivers/block/mtip32xx/mtip32xx.c) * loop_make_request * null_queue_bio * bcache's make_request fns Some others are almost certainly safe to remove now, but will be left for future patches. 2015-07-29block: add a bi_error field to struct bioChristoph Hellwig1-16/+16
Currently we have two different ways to signal an I/O error on a BIO: (1) by clearing the BIO_UPTODATE flag (2) by returning a Linux errno value to the bi_end_io callback The first one has the drawback of only communicating a single possible error (-EIO), and the second one has the drawback of not beeing persistent when bios are queued up, and are not passed along from child to parent bio in the ever more popular chaining scenario. Having both mechanisms available has the additional drawback of utterly confusing driver authors and introducing bugs where various I/O submitters only deal with one of them, and the others have to add boilerplate code to deal with both kinds of error returns. So add a new bi_error field to store an errno value directly in struct bio and remove the existing mechanisms to clean all this up. 2015-06-02writeback: separate out include/linux/backing-dev-defs.hTejun Heo1-0/+1
With the planned cgroup writeback support, backing-dev related declarations will be more widely used across block and cgroup; unfortunately, including backing-dev.h from include/linux/blkdev.h makes cyclic include dependency quite likely. This patch separates out backing-dev-defs.h which only has the essential definitions and updates blkdev.h to include it. c files which need access to more backing-dev details now include backing-dev.h directly. This takes backing-dev.h off the common include dependency chain making it a lot easier to use it across block and cgroup. v2: fs/fat build failure fixed. 2014-08-28block,scsi: fixup blk_get_request dead queue scenariosJoe Lawrence1-2/+2
The blk_get_request function may fail in low-memory conditions or during device removal (even if __GFP_WAIT is set). To distinguish between these errors, modify the blk_get_request call stack to return the appropriate ERR_PTR. Verify that all callers check the return status and consider IS_ERR instead of a simple NULL pointer check. For consistency, make a similar change to the blk_mq_alloc_request leg of blk_get_request. It may fail if the queue is dead, or the caller was unwilling to wait. 2014-08-26block,scsi: verify return pointer from blk_get_requestJoe Lawrence1-0/+2
The blk-core dead queue checks introduce an error scenario to blk_get_request that returns NULL if the request queue has been shutdown. 2014-06-06block: add blk_rq_set_block_pc()Jens Axboe1-1/+1
With the optimizations around not clearing the full request at alloc time, we are leaving some of the needed init for REQ_TYPE_BLOCK_PC up to the user allocating the request. Add a blk_rq_set_block_pc() that sets the command type to REQ_TYPE_BLOCK_PC, and properly initializes the members associated with this type of request. Update callers to use this function instead of manipulating rq->cmd_type directly. Includes fixes from Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de> for my half-assed attempt. 2013-11-23block: Introduce new bio_split()Kent Overstreet1-62/+74
The new bio_split() can split arbitrary bios - it's not restricted to single page bios, like the old bio_split() (previously renamed to bio_pair_split()). It also has different semantics - it doesn't allocate a struct bio_pair, leaving it up to the caller to handle completions. Then convert the existing bio_pair_split() users to the new bio_split() - and also nvme, which was open coding bio splitting. (We have to take that BUG_ON() out of bio_integrity_trim() because this bio_split() needs to use it, and there's no reason it has to be used on bios marked as cloned; BIO_CLONED doesn't seem to have clearly documented semantics anyways.)
