With the recent innovations in CPU hardware acceleration technologies
from Intel and AMD, VMware ran a few experiments to compare these
techniques to guest paravirtualization technique on VMware's platform.
These hardware assisted virtualization techniques have outperformed the
performance benefits provided by VMI in most of the workloads. VMware
expects that these hardware features will be ubiquitous in a couple of
years, as a result, VMware has started a phased retirement of this
feature from the hypervisor.
Please note that VMI has always been an optimization and non-VMI kernels
still work fine on VMware's platform.
Latest versions of VMware's product which support VMI are,
Workstation 7.0 and VSphere 4.0 on ESX side, future maintainence
releases for these products will continue supporting VMI.
For more details about VMI retirement take a look at this,
http://blogs.vmware.com/guestosguide/2009/09/vmi-retirement.html
This feature removal was scheduled for 2.6.37 back in September 2009.

Currently IRQ0..IRQ15 are assigned to IRQ0_VECTOR..IRQ15_VECTOR's on
all the cpu's.
If these IRQ's are handled by legacy pic controller, then the kernel
handles them only on cpu 0. So there is no need to block this vector
space on all cpu's.
Similarly if these IRQ's are handled by IO-APIC, then the IRQ affinity
will determine on which cpu's we need allocate the vector resource for
that particular IRQ. This can be done dynamically and here also there
is no need to block 16 vectors for IRQ0..IRQ15 on all cpu's.
Fix this by initially assigning IRQ0..IRQ15 to IRQ0_VECTOR..IRQ15_VECTOR's only
on cpu 0. If the legacy controllers like pic handles these irq's, then
this configuration will be fixed. If more modern controllers like IO-APIC
handle these IRQ's, then we start with this configuration and as IRQ's
migrate, vectors (/and cpu's) associated with these IRQ's change dynamically.
This will freeup the block of 16 vectors on other cpu's which don't handle
IRQ0..IRQ15, which can now be used for other IRQ's that the particular cpu
handle.
[ hpa: this also an architectural cleanup for future legacy-PIC-free
configurations. ]

FIRST_DEVICE_VECTOR is going away and it looks like a bad hack to steal

IRQ0_VECTOR.

TSC calibration is modified by the vmware hypervisor and paravirt by
separate means. Moorestown wants to add its own calibration routine as
well. So make calibrate_tsc a proper x86_init_ops function and
override it by paravirt or by the early setup of the vmware
hypervisor.

Impact: cleanup
Make x86_quirks support more transparent. The highlevel
methods are now named:
extern void x86_quirk_pre_intr_init(void);
extern void x86_quirk_intr_init(void);
extern void x86_quirk_trap_init(void);
extern void x86_quirk_pre_time_init(void);
extern void x86_quirk_time_init(void);
This makes it clear that if some platform extension has to
do something here that it is considered ... weird, and is
discouraged.
Also remove arch_hooks.h and move it into setup.h (and other
header files where appropriate).

Right now nobody cares, but the suspend/resume code will eventually want
to suspend device interrupts without suspending the timer, and will
depend on this flag to know.
The modern x86 timer infrastructure uses the local APIC timers and never
shows up as a device interrupt at all, so it isn't affected and doesn't
need any of this.

The x86/Voyager subarch used to have this distinction between
'x86 SMP support' and 'Voyager SMP support':
config X86_SMP
bool
depends on SMP && ((X86_32 && !X86_VOYAGER) || X86_64)
This is a pointless distinction - Voyager can (and already does) use
smp_ops to implement various SMP quirks it has - and it can be extended
more to cover all the specialities of Voyager.
So remove this complication in the Kconfig space.

Impact: change calling convention of existing clock_event APIs

as does the ->broadcast function.

Rather than remove and/or mangle inb_p/outb_p we want to remove the use
of them from inappropriate places. For the PIC/PIT this may eventually
depend on 32/64bitism or similar so start by adding inb/outb_pit and
inb/outb_pic so that we can make them use any scheme we settle on without
disturbing the existing, correct (for ISA), port 0x80 usage. (eg we can
make inb_pit use udelay without messing up inb_p).
Floppy already does this for the fdc. That really only leaves the CMOS as
a core logic item to tackle, and bits of parallel port handling in the
chipset layers.
