2022-03-22drivers/base/node: consolidate node device subsystem initialization in ↵David Hildenbrand1-12/+0
node_dev_init() ... and call node_dev_init() after memory_dev_init() from driver_init(), so before any of the existing arch/subsys calls. All online nodes should be known at that point: early during boot, arch code determines node and zone ranges and sets the relevant nodes online; usually this happens in setup_arch(). This is in line with memory_dev_init(), which initializes the memory device subsystem and creates all memory block devices. Similar to memory_dev_init(), panic() if anything goes wrong, we don't want to continue with such basic initialization errors. The important part is that node_dev_init() gets called after memory_dev_init() and after cpu_dev_init(), but before any of the relevant archs call register_cpu() to register the new cpu device under the node device. The latter should be the case for the current users of topology_init(). 2022-03-22mm: merge pte_mkhuge() call into arch_make_huge_pte()Anshuman Khandual1-0/+1
Each call into pte_mkhuge() is invariably followed by arch_make_huge_pte(). Instead arch_make_huge_pte() can accommodate pte_mkhuge() at the beginning. This updates generic fallback stub for arch_make_huge_pte() and available platforms definitions. This makes huge pte creation much cleaner and easier to follow. 2022-02-25Merge branch 'set_fs-4' of ↵Arnd Bergmann14-98/+90
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/arnd/asm-generic into asm-generic Christoph Hellwig and a few others spent a huge effort on removing set_fs() from most of the important architectures, but about half the other architectures were never completed even though most of them don't actually use set_fs() at all. I did a patch for microblaze at some point, which turned out to be fairly generic, and now ported it to most other architectures, using new generic implementations of access_ok() and __{get,put}_kernel_nocheck(). Three architectures (sparc64, ia64, and sh) needed some extra work, which I also completed. * 'set_fs-4' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/arnd/asm-generic: uaccess: remove CONFIG_SET_FS ia64: remove CONFIG_SET_FS support sh: remove CONFIG_SET_FS support sparc64: remove CONFIG_SET_FS support lib/test_lockup: fix kernel pointer check for separate address spaces uaccess: generalize access_ok() uaccess: fix type mismatch warnings from access_ok() arm64: simplify access_ok() m68k: fix access_ok for coldfire MIPS: use simpler access_ok() MIPS: Handle address errors for accesses above CPU max virtual user address uaccess: add generic __{get,put}_kernel_nofault nios2: drop access_ok() check from __put_user() x86: use more conventional access_ok() definition x86: remove __range_not_ok() sparc64: add __{get,put}_kernel_nofault() nds32: fix access_ok() checks in get/put_user uaccess: fix nios2 and microblaze get_user_8() uaccess: fix integer overflow on access_ok()
2022-02-25uaccess: remove CONFIG_SET_FSArnd Bergmann4-22/+0
There are no remaining callers of set_fs(), so CONFIG_SET_FS can be removed globally, along with the thread_info field and any references to it. This turns access_ok() into a cheaper check against TASK_SIZE_MAX. As CONFIG_SET_FS is now gone, drop all remaining references to set_fs()/get_fs(), mm_segment_t, user_addr_max() and uaccess_kernel(). 2022-02-25sparc64: remove CONFIG_SET_FS supportArnd Bergmann9-49/+9
sparc64 uses address space identifiers to differentiate between kernel and user space, using ASI_P for kernel threads but ASI_AIUS for normal user space, with the option of changing between them. As nothing really changes the ASI any more, just hardcode ASI_AIUS everywhere. Kernel threads are not allowed to access __user pointers anyway. Signed-off-by: Arnd Bergmann <arnd@arndb.de>
2022-02-25uaccess: generalize access_ok()Arnd Bergmann4-28/+6
There are many different ways that access_ok() is defined across architectures, but in the end, they all just compare against the user_addr_max() value or they accept anything. Provide one definition that works for most architectures, checking against TASK_SIZE_MAX for user processes or skipping the check inside of uaccess_kernel() sections. For architectures without CONFIG_SET_FS(), this should be the fastest check, as it comes down to a single comparison of a pointer against a compile-time constant, while the architecture specific versions tend to do something more complex for historic reasons or get something wrong. Type checking for __user annotations is handled inconsistently across architectures, but this is easily simplified as well by using an inline function that takes a 'const void __user *' argument. A handful of callers need an extra __user annotation for this. Some architectures had trick to use 33-bit or 65-bit arithmetic on the addresses to calculate the overflow, however this simpler version uses fewer registers, which means it can produce better object code in the end despite needing a second (statically predicted) branch. 2022-02-25uaccess: fix type mismatch warnings from access_ok()Arnd Bergmann1-1/+1
On some architectures, access_ok() does not do any argument type checking, so replacing the definition with a generic one causes a few warnings for harmless issues that were never caught before. 2022-02-25uaccess: add generic __{get,put}_kernel_nofaultArnd Bergmann1-2/+0
Nine architectures are still missing __{get,put}_kernel_nofault: alpha, ia64, microblaze, nds32, nios2, openrisc, sh, sparc32, xtensa. Add a generic version that lets everything use the normal copy_{from,to}_kernel_nofault() code based on these, removing the last use of get_fs()/set_fs() from architecture-independent code. 2022-02-25sparc64: add __{get,put}_kernel_nofault()Arnd Bergmann1-0/+78
sparc64 is one of the architectures that uses separate address spaces for kernel and user addresses, so __get_kernel_nofault() can not just call into the normal __get_user() without the access_ok() check. Instead duplicate __get_user() and __put_user() into their in-kernel versions, with minor changes for the calling conventions and leaving out the address space modifier on the assembler instruction. This could surely be written more elegantly, but duplicating it gets the job done. Signed-off-by: Arnd Bergmann <arnd@arndb.de>

2022-02-17treewide: Replace zero-length arrays with flexible-array membersGustavo A. R. Silva1-5/+5
There is a regular need in the kernel to provide a way to declare having a dynamically sized set of trailing elements in a structure. Kernel code should always use “flexible array members”[1] for these cases. The older style of one-element or zero-length arrays should no longer be used[2]. 2022-02-11lib/xor: make xor prototypes more friendly to compiler vectorizationArd Biesheuvel2-21/+42
Modern compilers are perfectly capable of extracting parallelism from the XOR routines, provided that the prototypes reflect the nature of the input accurately, in particular, the fact that the input vectors are expected not to overlap. This is not documented explicitly, but is implied by the interchangeability of the various C routines, some of which use temporary variables while others don't: this means that these routines only behave identically for non-overlapping inputs. So let's decorate these input vectors with the __restrict modifier, which informs the compiler that there is no overlap. While at it, make the input-only vectors pointer-to-const as well. 2022-01-20mm: percpu: generalize percpu related configKefeng Wang1-9/+3
Patch series "mm: percpu: Cleanup percpu first chunk function". When supporting page mapping percpu first chunk allocator on arm64, we found there are lots of duplicated codes in percpu embed/page first chunk allocator. This patchset is aimed to cleanup them and should no function change. The currently supported status about 'embed' and 'page' in Archs shows below, embed: NEED_PER_CPU_PAGE_FIRST_CHUNK page: NEED_PER_CPU_EMBED_FIRST_CHUNK embed page ------------------------ arm64 Y Y mips Y N powerpc Y Y riscv Y N sparc Y Y x86 Y Y ------------------------ There are two interfaces about percpu first chunk allocator, extern int __init pcpu_embed_first_chunk(size_t reserved_size, size_t dyn_size, size_t atom_size, pcpu_fc_cpu_distance_fn_t cpu_distance_fn, - pcpu_fc_alloc_fn_t alloc_fn, - pcpu_fc_free_fn_t free_fn); + pcpu_fc_cpu_to_node_fn_t cpu_to_nd_fn); extern int __init pcpu_page_first_chunk(size_t reserved_size, - pcpu_fc_alloc_fn_t alloc_fn, - pcpu_fc_free_fn_t free_fn, - pcpu_fc_populate_pte_fn_t populate_pte_fn); + pcpu_fc_cpu_to_node_fn_t cpu_to_nd_fn); The pcpu_fc_alloc_fn_t/pcpu_fc_free_fn_t is killed, we provide generic pcpu_fc_alloc() and pcpu_fc_free() function, which are called in the pcpu_embed/page_first_chunk(). 1) For pcpu_embed_first_chunk(), pcpu_fc_cpu_to_node_fn_t is needed to be provided when archs supported NUMA. 2) For pcpu_page_first_chunk(), the pcpu_fc_populate_pte_fn_t is killed too, a generic pcpu_populate_pte() which marked '__weak' is provided, if you need a different function to populate pte on the arch(like x86), please provide its own implementation. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ebiederm/user-namespace Pull signal/exit/ptrace updates from Eric Biederman: "This set of changes deletes some dead code, makes a lot of cleanups which hopefully make the code easier to follow, and fixes bugs found along the way. The end-game which I have not yet reached yet is for fatal signals that generate coredumps to be short-circuit deliverable from complete_signal, for force_siginfo_to_task not to require changing userspace configured signal delivery state, and for the ptrace stops to always happen in locations where we can guarantee on all architectures that the all of the registers are saved and available on the stack. Removal of profile_task_ext, profile_munmap, and profile_handoff_task are the big successes for dead code removal this round. A bunch of small bug fixes are included, as most of the issues reported were small enough that they would not affect bisection so I simply added the fixes and did not fold the fixes into the changes they were fixing. There was a bug that broke coredumps piped to systemd-coredump. I dropped the change that caused that bug and replaced it entirely with something much more restrained. Unfortunately that required some rebasing. Some successes after this set of changes: There are few enough calls to do_exit to audit in a reasonable amount of time. The lifetime of struct kthread now matches the lifetime of struct task, and the pointer to struct kthread is no longer stored in set_child_tid. The flag SIGNAL_GROUP_COREDUMP is removed. The field group_exit_task is removed. Issues where task->exit_code was examined with signal->group_exit_code should been examined were fixed. There are several loosely related changes included because I am cleaning up and if I don't include them they will probably get lost. 2021-12-13exit: Add and use make_task_dead.Eric W. Biederman2-6/+2
There are two big uses of do_exit. The first is it's design use to be the guts of the exit(2) system call. The second use is to terminate a task after something catastrophic has happened like a NULL pointer in kernel code. Add a function make_task_dead that is initialy exactly the same as do_exit to cover the cases where do_exit is called to handle catastrophic failure. In time this can probably be reduced to just a light wrapper around do_task_dead. For now keep it exactly the same so that there will be no behavioral differences introducing this new concept. Replace all of the uses of do_exit that use it for catastraphic task cleanup with make_task_dead to make it clear what the code is doing. As part of this rename rewind_stack_do_exit rewind_stack_and_make_dead. Signed-off-by: "Eric W. Biederman" <ebiederm@xmission.com>

2021-11-19signal: Replace force_fatal_sig with force_exit_sig when in doubtEric W. Biederman2-3/+3
Recently to prevent issues with SECCOMP_RET_KILL and similar signals being changed before they are delivered SA_IMMUTABLE was added. Unfortunately this broke debuggers[1][2] which reasonably expect to be able to trap synchronous SIGTRAP and SIGSEGV even when the target process is not configured to handle those signals. Add force_exit_sig and use it instead of force_fatal_sig where historically the code has directly called do_exit. This has the implementation benefits of going through the signal exit path (including generating core dumps) without the danger of allowing userspace to ignore or change these signals. This avoids userspace regressions as older kernels exited with do_exit which debuggers also can not intercept. In the future is should be possible to improve the quality of implementation of the kernel by changing some of these force_exit_sig calls to force_fatal_sig. That can be done where it matters on a case-by-case basis with careful analysis. 2021-11-16bpf: Change value of MAX_TAIL_CALL_CNT from 32 to 33Tiezhu Yang1-1/+1
In the current code, the actual max tail call count is 33 which is greater than MAX_TAIL_CALL_CNT (defined as 32). The actual limit is not consistent with the meaning of MAX_TAIL_CALL_CNT and thus confusing at first glance. We can see the historical evolution from commit 04fd61ab36ec ("bpf: allow bpf programs to tail-call other bpf programs") and commit f9dabe016b63 ("bpf: Undo off-by-one in interpreter tail call count limit"). In order to avoid changing existing behavior, the actual limit is 33 now, this is reasonable. After commit 874be05f525e ("bpf, tests: Add tail call test suite"), we can see there exists failed testcase. On all archs when CONFIG_BPF_JIT_ALWAYS_ON is not set: # echo 0 > /proc/sys/net/core/bpf_jit_enable # modprobe test_bpf # dmesg | grep -w FAIL Tail call error path, max count reached jited:0 ret 34 != 33 FAIL On some archs: # echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/core/bpf_jit_enable # modprobe test_bpf # dmesg | grep -w FAIL Tail call error path, max count reached jited:1 ret 34 != 33 FAIL Although the above failed testcase has been fixed in commit 18935a72eb25 ("bpf/tests: Fix error in tail call limit tests"), it would still be good to change the value of MAX_TAIL_CALL_CNT from 32 to 33 to make the code more readable. The 32-bit x86 JIT was using a limit of 32, just fix the wrong comments and limit to 33 tail calls as the constant MAX_TAIL_CALL_CNT updated. For the mips64 JIT, use "ori" instead of "addiu" as suggested by Johan Almbladh. For the riscv JIT, use RV_REG_TCC directly to save one register move as suggested by Björn Töpel. For the other implementations, no function changes, it does not change the current limit 33, the new value of MAX_TAIL_CALL_CNT can reflect the actual max tail call count, the related tail call testcases in test_bpf module and selftests can work well for the interpreter and the JIT. Here are the test results on x86_64: # uname -m x86_64 # echo 0 > /proc/sys/net/core/bpf_jit_enable # modprobe test_bpf test_suite=test_tail_calls # dmesg | tail -1 test_bpf: test_tail_calls: Summary: 8 PASSED, 0 FAILED, [0/8 JIT'ed] # rmmod test_bpf # echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/core/bpf_jit_enable # modprobe test_bpf test_suite=test_tail_calls # dmesg | tail -1 test_bpf: test_tail_calls: Summary: 8 PASSED, 0 FAILED, [8/8 JIT'ed] # rmmod test_bpf # ./test_progs -t tailcalls #142 tailcalls:OK Summary: 1/11 PASSED, 0 SKIPPED, 0 FAILED Signed-off-by: Tiezhu Yang <yangtiezhu@loongson.cn> Signed-off-by: Daniel Borkmann <daniel@iogearbox.net> Tested-by: Johan Almbladh <johan.almbladh@anyfinetworks.com> Tested-by: Ilya Leoshkevich <iii@linux.ibm.com> Acked-by: Björn Töpel <bjorn@kernel.org> Acked-by: Johan Almbladh <johan.almbladh@anyfinetworks.com> Acked-by: Ilya Leoshkevich <iii@linux.ibm.com> Link: https://lore.kernel.org/bpf/1636075800-3264-1-git-send-email-yangtiezhu@loongson.cn

This set of changes introduces force_fatal_sig a way of sending a signal and not allowing it to be caught, and corrects the misuse of the existing abstractions that I found. A lot of the misuse of the existing abstractions are silly things such as doing something after calling a no return function, rolling BUG by hand, doing more work than necessary to terminate a kernel thread, or calling do_exit(SIGKILL) instead of calling force_sig(SIGKILL). In the review a deficiency in force_fatal_sig and force_sig_seccomp where ptrace or sigaction could prevent the delivery of the signal was found. I have added a change that adds SA_IMMUTABLE to change that makes it impossible to interrupt the delivery of those signals, and allows backporting to fix force_sig_seccomp And Arnd found an issue where a function passed to kthread_run had the wrong prototype, and after my cleanup was failing to build." * 'exit-cleanups-for-v5.16' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ebiederm/user-namespace: (23 commits) soc: ti: fix wkup_m3_rproc_boot_thread return type signal: Add SA_IMMUTABLE to ensure forced siganls do not get changed signal: Replace force_sigsegv(SIGSEGV) with force_fatal_sig(SIGSEGV) exit/r8188eu: Replace the macro thread_exit with a simple return 0 exit/rtl8712: Replace the macro thread_exit with a simple return 0 exit/rtl8723bs: Replace the macro thread_exit with a simple return 0 signal/x86: In emulate_vsyscall force a signal instead of calling do_exit signal/sparc32: In setup_rt_frame and setup_fram use force_fatal_sig signal/sparc32: Exit with a fatal signal when try_to_clear_window_buffer fails exit/syscall_user_dispatch: Send ordinary signals on failure signal: Implement force_fatal_sig exit/kthread: Have kernel threads return instead of calling do_exit signal/s390: Use force_sigsegv in default_trap_handler signal/vm86_32: Properly send SIGSEGV when the vm86 state cannot be saved. signal/vm86_32: Replace open coded BUG_ON with an actual BUG_ON signal/sparc: In setup_tsb_params convert open coded BUG into BUG signal/powerpc: On swapcontext failure force SIGSEGV signal/sh: Use force_sig(SIGKILL) instead of do_group_exit(SIGKILL) signal/mips: Update (_save|_restore)_fp_context to fail with -EFAULT signal/sparc32: Remove unreachable do_exit in do_sparc_fault ...
