2018-06-01kbuild: add machine size to CHECKFLAGSLuc Van Oostenryck1-1/+1
By default, sparse assumes a 64bit machine when compiled on x86-64 and 32bit when compiled on anything else. This can of course create all sort of problems for the other archs, like issuing false warnings ('shift too big (32) for type unsigned long'), or worse, failing to emit legitimate warnings. Fix this by adding the -m32/-m64 flag, depending on CONFIG_64BIT, to CHECKFLAGS in the main Makefile (and so for all archs). Also, remove the now unneeded -m32/-m64 in arch specific Makefiles. The kernel depends on macros like __BYTE_ORDER__, __BIG_ENDIAN__ or __LITTLE_ENDIAN__. OTOH, sparse doesn't know about the endianness of the kernel and by default uses the same as the machine on which sparse was built. Ensure that sparse can predefine the macros corresponding to how the kernel was configured by adding -m{big,little}-endian to CHECKFLAGS in the main Makefile (and so for all archs). It uses a combination of two strategies: For sys_msgctl, sys_semctl and sys_shmctl, I do not introduce a completely new set of replacement system calls, but instead extend the existing ones to return data in the reserved fields of the normal data structure. This should be completely transparent to any existing user space, and only after the 32-bit time_t wraps, it will make a difference in the returned data. libc implementations will consequently have to provide their own data structures when they move to 64-bit time_t, and convert the structures in user space from the ones returned by the kernel. In contrast, mq_timedsend, mq_timedreceive and and semtimedop all do need to change because having a libc redefine the timespec type breaks the ABI, so with this series there will be two separate entry points for 32-bit architectures. There are three cases here: - little-endian architectures (except powerpc and mips) can use the normal layout and just cast the data structure to the user space type that contains 64-bit numbers. - parisc and sparc can do the same thing with big-endian user space - little-endian powerpc and most big-endian architectures have to flip the upper and lower 32-bit halves of the time_t value in memory, but can otherwise keep using the normal layout - mips and big-endian xtensa need to be more careful because they are not consistent in their definitions, and they have to provide custom libc implementations for the system calls to use 64-bit time_t."

Filling in struct siginfo before calling force_sig_info a tedious and error prone process, where once in a great while the wrong fields are filled out, and siginfo has been inconsistently cleared. Simplify this process by using the helper force_sig_fault. Which takes as a parameters all of the information it needs, ensures all of the fiddly bits of filling in struct siginfo are done properly and then calls force_sig_info. In short about a 5 line reduction in code for every time force_sig_info is called, which makes the calling function clearer. Call clear_siginfo to ensure every stack allocated siginfo is properly initialized before being passed to the signal sending functions. Note: It is not safe to depend on C initializers to initialize struct siginfo on the stack because C is allowed to skip holes when initializing a structure. The initialization of struct siginfo in tracehook_report_syscall_exit was moved from the helper user_single_step_siginfo into tracehook_report_syscall_exit itself, to make it clear that the local variable siginfo gets fully initialized. In a few cases the scope of struct siginfo has been reduced to make it clear that siginfo siginfo is not used on other paths in the function in which it is declared. The read_persistent_clock() uses a timespec, which is not year 2038 safe on 32bit systems. On parisc architecture, we have implemented generic RTC drivers that can be used to compensate the system suspend time, but the RTC time can not represent the nanosecond resolution, so this patch just converts to read_persistent_clock64() with timespec64. parisc, uses a nonstandard variation of the generic sysvipc data structures, intended to have the padding moved around so it can deal with big-endian 32-bit user space that has 64-bit time_t. Unlike most architectures, parisc actually succeeded in defining this right for big-endian CPUs, but as everyone else got it wrong, we just use the same hack everywhere. This takes just take the same approach here that we have for the asm-generic headers and adds separate 32-bit fields for the upper halves of the timestamps, to let libc deal with the mess in user space. Typically these system calls take a 'struct timespec' argument, but that structure is defined in user space by the C library and its layout will change. The kernel already supports handling the 32-bit time_t on 64-bit architectures through the CONFIG_COMPAT mechanism. As there are a total of 51 system calls suffering from this problem, reusing that mechanism on 32-bit architectures. We already have patches for most of the remaining system calls, but this set contains most of the complexity and is best tested. There was one last-minute regression that prevented it from going into 4.17, but that is fixed now. The compat syscalls are repurposed to provide backward compatibility by using them as native syscalls as well for 32 bit architectures. They will continue to use timespec at syscall boundaries. CONFIG_64_BIT_TIME controls whether the syscalls use __kernel_timespec or timespec at syscall boundaries. The series does the following: 1. Enable compat syscalls on 32 bit architectures. 2. Add a new __kernel_timespec type to be used as the data structure for all the new syscalls. 3. Add new config CONFIG_64BIT_TIME(intead of the CONFIG_COMPAT_TIME in [1] and [2] to switch to new definition of __kernel_timespec. It is the same as struct timespec otherwise. 4. Add new CONFIG_32BIT_TIME to conditionally compile compat syscalls.

2018-04-11mm: introduce MAP_FIXED_NOREPLACEMichal Hocko1-0/+1
Patch series "mm: introduce MAP_FIXED_NOREPLACE", v2. This has started as a follow up discussion [3][4] resulting in the runtime failure caused by hardening patch [5] which removes MAP_FIXED from the elf loader because MAP_FIXED is inherently dangerous as it might silently clobber an existing underlying mapping (e.g. stack). The reason for the failure is that some architectures enforce an alignment for the given address hint without MAP_FIXED used (e.g. for shared or file backed mappings). One way around this would be excluding those archs which do alignment tricks from the hardening [6]. The patch is really trivial but it has been objected, rightfully so, that this screams for a more generic solution. We basically want a non-destructive MAP_FIXED. The first patch introduced MAP_FIXED_NOREPLACE which enforces the given address but unlike MAP_FIXED it fails with EEXIST if the given range conflicts with an existing one. The flag is introduced as a completely new one rather than a MAP_FIXED extension because of the backward compatibility. We really want a never-clobber semantic even on older kernels which do not recognize the flag. Unfortunately mmap sucks wrt flags evaluation because we do not EINVAL on unknown flags. On those kernels we would simply use the traditional hint based semantic so the caller can still get a different address (which sucks) but at least not silently corrupt an existing mapping. I do not see a good way around that. Except we won't export expose the new semantic to the userspace at all. It seems there are users who would like to have something like that. Jemalloc has been mentioned by Michael Ellerman [7] Florian Weimer has mentioned the following: : glibc ld.so currently maps DSOs without hints. This means that the kernel : will map right next to each other, and the offsets between them a completely : predictable. We would like to change that and supply a random address in a : window of the address space. If there is a conflict, we do not want the : kernel to pick a non-random address. Instead, we would try again with a : random address. John Hubbard has mentioned CUDA example : a) Searches /proc/<pid>/maps for a "suitable" region of available : VA space. The main problem of this flag is, however, that it is inherently dangerous because it unmaps existing mappings covered by the requested range. This can cause silent memory corruptions. While the current semantic might be really desiderable in many cases there are others which would want to enforce the given range but rather see a failure than a silent memory corruption on a clashing range. Please note that there is no guarantee that a given range is obeyed by the mmap even when it is free - e.g. arch specific code is allowed to apply an alignment. Introduce a new MAP_FIXED_NOREPLACE flag for mmap to achieve this behavior. It has the same semantic as MAP_FIXED wrt. the given address request with a single exception that it fails with EEXIST if the requested address is already covered by an existing mapping. We still do rely on get_unmaped_area to handle all the arch specific MAP_FIXED treatment and check for a conflicting vma after it returns. Patch series "exec: Pin stack limit during exec". Attempts to solve problems with the stack limit changing during exec continue to be frustrated[1][2]. In addition to the specific issues around the Stack Clash family of flaws, Andy Lutomirski pointed out[3] other places during exec where the stack limit is used and is assumed to be unchanging. Given the many places it gets used and the fact that it can be manipulated/raced via setrlimit() and prlimit(), I think the only way to handle this is to move away from the "current" view of the stack limit and instead attach it to the bprm, and plumb this down into the functions that need to know the stack limits. This series implements the approach. Drop our own compat binfmt implementation in arch/parisc/kernel/binfmt_elf32.c in favour of the generic implementation with CONFIG_COMPAT_BINFMT_ELF. While cleaning up the dependencies, I noticed that ELF_PLATFORM was strangely defined: On a 32-bit kernel, it was defined to "PARISC", while when running in compat mode on a 64-bit kernel it was defined to "PARISC32". Since it doesn't seem to be used in glibc yet, it's now defined in both cases to "PARISC". In any case, it can be distinguished because it's either a 32-bit or a 64-bit ELF file. Thanks to commit 4b3ef9daa4fc ("mm/swap: split swap cache into 64MB trunks"), after swapoff the address_space associated with the swap device will be freed. So page_mapping() users which may touch the address_space need some kind of mechanism to prevent the address_space from being freed during accessing. The dcache flushing functions (flush_dcache_page(), etc) in architecture specific code may access the address_space of swap device for anonymous pages in swap cache via page_mapping() function. But from cachetlb.txt and Russell King, flush_dcache_page() only care about file cache pages, for anonymous pages, flush_anon_page() should be used. The implementation of flush_dcache_page() in all architectures follows this too. They will check whether page_mapping() is NULL and whether mapping_mapped() is true to determine whether to flush the dcache immediately. And they will use interval tree (mapping->i_mmap) to find all user space mappings. While mapping_mapped() and mapping->i_mmap isn't used by anonymous pages in swap cache at all. So, to fix the race between swapoff and flush dcache, __page_mapping() is add to return the address_space for file cache pages and NULL otherwise. All page_mapping() invoking in flush dcache functions are replaced with page_mapping_file(). Therefore, system call functions such as sys_xyzzy() or compat_sys_xyzzy() should only be called from userspace via the syscall table, but not from elsewhere in the kernel. At least on 64-bit x86, it will likely be a hard requirement from v4.17 onwards to not call system call functions in the kernel: It is better to use use a different calling convention for system calls there, where struct pt_regs is decoded on-the-fly in a syscall wrapper which then hands processing over to the actual syscall function. This means that only those parameters which are actually needed for a specific syscall are passed on during syscall entry, instead of filling in six CPU registers with random user space content all the time (which may cause serious trouble down the call chain). Those x86-specific patches will be pushed through the x86 tree in the near future. Moreover, rules on how data may be accessed may differ between kernel data and user data. This is another reason why calling sys_xyzzy() is generally a bad idea, and -- at most -- acceptable in arch-specific code. This patchset removes all in-kernel calls to syscall functions in the kernel with the exception of arch/.
