Use the generic pci_enable_resources() instead of the arch-specific code. 2008-03-15[PARISC] pdc_console: fix bizarre panic on bootKyle McMartin2-12/+34
Commit 721fdf34167580ff98263c74cead8871d76936e6 introduced a subtle bug by accidently removing the "static" from iodc_dbuf. This resulted in, what appeared to be, a trap without *current set to a task. Probably the result of a trap in real mode while calling firmware. Also do other misc clean ups. 2008-02-14Embed a struct path into struct nameidata instead of nd->{dentry,mnt}Jan Blunck1-1/+1
This is the central patch of a cleanup series. In most cases there is no good reason why someone would want to use a dentry for itself. This series reflects that fact and embeds a struct path into nameidata. Mark arches that support A.OUT format by including the following in their master Kconfig files: config ARCH_SUPPORTS_AOUT def_bool y This should also be set if the arch provides compatibility A.OUT support for an older arch, for instance x86_64 for i386 or sparc64 for sparc. I've guessed at which arches don't, based on comments in the code, however I'm sure that some of the ones I've marked as 'yes' actually should be 'no'. 2008-02-07Introduce flags for reserve_bootmem()Bernhard Walle1-5/+9
This patchset adds a flags variable to reserve_bootmem() and uses the BOOTMEM_EXCLUSIVE flag in crashkernel reservation code to detect collisions between crashkernel area and already used memory. This patch: Change the reserve_bootmem() function to accept a new flag BOOTMEM_EXCLUSIVE. If that flag is set, the function returns with -EBUSY if the memory already has been reserved in the past. This is to avoid conflicts. Because that code runs before SMP initialisation, there's no race condition inside reserve_bootmem_core(). Linus: On the per-architecture side, I do think it would be better to *not* have internal architecture knowledge in a generic file, and as such a line like depends on X86_32 || IA64 || PPC || S390 || SPARC64 || X86_64 || AVR32 really shouldn't exist in a file like kernel/Kconfig.instrumentation. It would be much better to do depends on ARCH_SUPPORTS_KPROBES in that generic file, and then architectures that do support it would just have a bool ARCH_SUPPORTS_KPROBES default y in *their* architecture files. That would seem to be much more logical, and is readable both for arch maintainers *and* for people who have no clue - and don't care - about which architecture is supposed to support which interface... Changelog: Actually, I know I gave this as the magic incantation, but now that I see it, I realize that I should have told you to just use config ARCH_SUPPORTS_KPROBES def_bool y instead, which is a bit denser. 2008-01-30spinlock: lockbreak cleanupNick Piggin1-0/+5
The break_lock data structure and code for spinlocks is quite nasty. Not only does it double the size of a spinlock but it changes locking to a potentially less optimal trylock. Put all of that under CONFIG_GENERIC_LOCKBREAK, and introduce a __raw_spin_is_contended that uses the lock data itself to determine whether there are waiters on the lock, to be used if CONFIG_GENERIC_LOCKBREAK is not set. Rename need_lockbreak to spin_needbreak, make it use spin_is_contended to decouple it from the spinlock implementation, and make it typesafe (rwlocks do not have any need_lockbreak sites -- why do they even get bloated up with that break_lock then?). The timer interrupt had accidentally been marked IRQ_DISABLED since IRQ_PER_CPU had been OR-ed in, instead of set. This had been working by accident for quite a while. 2007-10-19pid namespaces: changes to show virtual ids to userPavel Emelyanov1-1/+1
This is the largest patch in the set. Make all (I hope) the places where the pid is shown to or get from user operate on the virtual pids. The idea is: - all in-kernel data structures must store either struct pid itself or the pid's global nr, obtained with pid_nr() call; - when seeking the task from kernel code with the stored id one should use find_task_by_pid() call that works with global pids; - when showing pid's numerical value to the user the virtual one should be used, but however when one shows task's pid outside this task's namespace the global one is to be used; - when getting the pid from userspace one need to consider this as the virtual one and use appropriate task/pid-searching functions. pcibios_link_hba_resources() could corrupt the resource tree by inserting resources in the wrong place. Fix this by calling pci_claim_resource() for PCI-PCI bridges. Delete pcibios_link_hba_resources as we shouldn't need it any more. Also get rid of lba_claim_dev_resources() and just call pci_claim_resource() directly.
