2022-01-20parisc: Autodetect default output device and set console= kernel parameterHelge Deller1-0/+11
Usually palo (the PA-RISC boot loader) will check at boot time if the machine/firmware was configured to use the serial line (ttyS0, SERIAL_x) or the graphical display (tty0, graph) as default output device and add the correct "console=ttyS0" or "console=tty0" Linux kernel parameter to the kernel command line when starting the Linux kernel. But the kernel could also have been started via the HP-UX boot loader or directly in qemu, in which cases the console parameter is missing. 2019-05-03parisc: Use per-pagetable spinlockMikulas Patocka1-0/+6
PA-RISC uses a global spinlock to protect pagetable updates in the TLB fault handlers. When multiple cores are taking TLB faults simultaneously, the cache line containing the spinlock becomes a bottleneck. This patch embeds the spinlock in the top level page directory, so that every process has its own lock. It improves performance by 30% when doing parallel compilations. At least on the N class systems, only one PxTLB inter processor broadcast can be active at any one time on the Merced bus. 2019-04-06parisc: Detect QEMU earlier in boot processHelge Deller1-0/+3
While adding LASI support to QEMU, I noticed that the QEMU detection in the kernel happens much too late. For example, when a LASI chip is found by the kernel, it registers the LASI LED driver as well. But when we run on QEMU it makes sense to avoid spending unnecessary CPU cycles, so we need to access the running_on_QEMU flag earlier than before. This patch now makes the QEMU detection the fist task of the Linux kernel by moving it to where the kernel enters the C-coding. 2018-10-17parisc: Add alternative coding infrastructureHelge Deller1-0/+81
This patch adds the necessary code to patch a running kernel at runtime to improve performance. The current implementation offers a few optimizations variants: - When running a SMP kernel on a single UP processor, unwanted assembler statements like locking functions are overwritten with NOPs. When multiple instructions shall be skipped, one branch instruction is used instead of multiple nop instructions. - In the UP case, some pdtlb and pitlb instructions are patched to become pdtlb,l and pitlb,l which only flushes the CPU-local tlb entries instead of broadcasting the flush to other CPUs in the system and thus may improve performance. - fic and fdc instructions are skipped if no I- or D-caches are installed. This should speed up qemu emulation and cacheless systems. - If no cache coherence is needed for IO operations, the relevant fdc and sync instructions in the sba and ccio drivers are replaced by nops. - On systems which share I- and D-TLBs and thus don't have a seperate instruction TLB, the pitlb instruction is replaced by a nop. Live-patching is done early in the boot process, just after having run the system inventory. No drivers are running and thus no external interrupts should arrive. The only difference is that pcxl supports dma coherent allocations, while pcx only supports non-consistent allocations and otherwise fails. But dma_alloc* is not in the fast path, and merging these two allows an easy migration path to the generic dma-noncoherent implementation, so do it. 2017-01-20sched/clock: Fix hotplug crashPeter Zijlstra1-0/+2
Mike reported that he could trigger the WARN_ON_ONCE() in set_sched_clock_stable() using hotplug. This exposed a fundamental problem with the interface, we should never mark the TSC stable if we ever find it to be unstable. Therefore set_sched_clock_stable() is a broken interface. The reason it existed is that not having it is a pain, it means all relevant architecture code needs to call clear_sched_clock_stable() where appropriate. Of the three architectures that select HAVE_UNSTABLE_SCHED_CLOCK ia64 and parisc are trivial in that they never called set_sched_clock_stable(), so add an unconditional call to clear_sched_clock_stable() to them. For x86 the story is a lot more involved, and what this patch tries to do is ensure we preserve the status quo. So even is Cyrix or Transmeta have usable TSC they never called set_sched_clock_stable() so they now get an explicit mark unstable. It would seem either the flushes in parisc_setup_cache_timing or smp_callin have corrupted kernel memory. The attached patch reworks parisc_setup_cache_timing to remove the races in setting the cache and TLB flush thresholds. It also corrects the number of bytes flushed in the TLB calculation. The patch flushes the cache and TLB on cpu0 before starting the secondary processors so that they are started from a known state. Tested with a few reboots on c8000. Increase the initial kernel default page mapping size for SMP kernels to 32MB and add a runtime check which panics early if the kernel is bigger than the initial mapping size. This fixes boot crashes of 32bit SMP kernels. Due to the introduction of huge page support in kernel 4.4 and it's required initial kernel layout in memory, a 32bit SMP kernel usually got bigger (in layout, not size) than 16MB. 2015-11-22parisc: Add Huge Page and HUGETLBFS supportHelge Deller1-1/+10
This patch adds huge page support to allow userspace to allocate huge pages and to use hugetlbfs filesystem on 32- and 64-bit Linux kernels. A later patch will add kernel support to map kernel text and data on huge pages. The only requirement is, that the kernel needs to be compiled for a PA8X00 CPU (PA2.0 architecture). Older PA1.X CPUs do not support variable page sizes. 64bit Kernels are compiled for PA2.0 by default. A fault vector on parisc needs to be 2K aligned. Furthermore the checksum of the fault vector needs to sum up to 0 which is being calculated and written at runtime. Up to now we aligned both PA20 and PA11 fault vectors on the same 4K page in order to easily write the checksum after having mapped the kernel read-only (by mapping this page only as read-write). But when we want to map the kernel text and data on huge pages this makes things harder. In case we fail to power up other CPUs in a SMP system, the kernel currently shows a wrong number of online CPUs. This change makes the output more verbose on how many of the CPUs are online. 2013-05-06parisc: fix partly 16/64k PAGE_SIZE bootHelge Deller1-0/+2
This patch fixes partly PAGE_SIZEs of 16K or 64K by adjusting the assembler PTE lookup code and the assembler TEMPALIAS code. Furthermore some data alignments for PAGE_SIZE have been limited to 4K (or less) to not waste too much memory with greater page sizes. As a side note, the palo loader can (currently) only handle up to 10 ELF segments which is fixed with tighter aligning as well. My testings indicated that the ldci command in the sba iommu coding needed adjustment by the PAGE_SHIFT value and that the I/O PDIR Page size was only set to 4K for my machine (C3000). All this fixes partly the boot, but there are still quite some caching problems left. Examples are e.g. the symbios logic driver which is failing: sym0: <896> rev 0x7 at pci 0000:00:0f.0 irq 69 sym0: PA-RISC Firmware, ID 7, Fast-40, SE, parity checking CACHE TEST FAILED: DMA error (dstat=0x81).sym0: CACHE INCORRECTLY CONFIGURED. and the tulip network driver which doesn't seem to work correctly either: Sending BOOTP requests .net eth0: Setting full-duplex based on MII#1 link partner capability of 05e1 ..... timed out! Bang in our own start_parisc call, which initializes the PDC width, and turns on the FPU. Previously, if CONFIG_PRINTK_TIME was on, we'd attempt to use the FPU before we had enabled it, resulting in a difficult to diagnose panic. This patch causes init_per_cpu to redundantly set these for cpu0, but this is harmless.

pdc_stable v0.30: This patch introduces 3 more files to the /sys/firmware/stable tree: - diagnostic, which contains a cryptic hex string - osdep1, a 16 bytes os-dependent storage area always available - osdep2, another os-dependent storage area which existence/size depends on hversion. This patch also adds code to setup the "Linux" signature in stable storage. That is to say that starting with this patch, the kernel will now sign its OSID (0x0006, thx LaMont) in Stable Storage upon boot, whether pdc_stable is enabled or not.
