2022-07-11MIPS: vdso: Utilize __pa() for gic_pfnFlorian Fainelli1-1/+1
The GIC user offset is mapped into every process' virtual address and is therefore part of the hot-path of arch_setup_additional_pages(). Utilize __pa() such that we are more optimal even when CONFIG_DEBUG_VIRTUAL is enabled, and while at it utilize PFN_DOWN() instead of open-coding the right shift by PAGE_SHIFT. This struct kthread going away during execve in turned made a use after free of struct kthread possible. Here, commit 343f4c49f243 ("kthread: Don't allocate kthread_struct for init and umh") is enough to fix the use after free and is simple enough to be backportable. The rest of the changes pass struct kernel_clone_args to clean things up and cause the code to make sense. In making init and the user mode helpers tasks purely user mode tasks I ran into two complications. The function task_tick_numa was detecting tasks without an mm by testing for the presence of PF_KTHREAD. The initramfs code in populate_initrd_image was using flush_delayed_fput to ensuere the closing of all it's file descriptors was complete, and flush_delayed_fput does not work in a userspace thread. In the current code, the users usually need to make sure the value of mem parameter is correct, but it is better to do some check to avoid potential boot hangs. 2022-05-12MIPS: Use NOKPROBE_SYMBOL() instead of __kprobes annotationTiezhu Yang1-12/+24
If define CONFIG_KPROBES, __kprobes annotation forces the whole function into the ".kprobes.text" section, NOKPROBE_SYMBOL() only stores the given function address in the "_kprobe_blacklist" section which is introduced to maintain kprobes blacklist. Modify the related code to use NOKPROBE_SYMBOL() to protect functions from kprobes instead of __kprobes annotation under arch/mips. When process exits or execute new binary, it will call function exit_mmap with old mm, there is such function call trace: exit_mmap(struct mm_struct *mm) --> tlb_finish_mmu(&tlb, 0, -1) --> arch_tlb_finish_mmu(tlb, start, end, force) --> tlb_flush_mmu(tlb); --> tlb_flush(struct mmu_gather *tlb) --> flush_tlb_mm(tlb->mm) It is not necessary to flush tlb since oldmm is not used anymore by the process, there is similar operations on IA64/ARM64 etc, this patch adds such optimization on MIPS. Add fn and fn_arg members into struct kernel_clone_args and test for them in copy_thread (instead of testing for PF_KTHREAD | PF_IO_WORKER). This allows any task that wants to be a user space task that only runs in kernel mode to use this functionality. The code on x86 is an exception and still retains a PF_KTHREAD test because x86 unlikely everything else handles kthreads slightly differently than user space tasks that start with a function. The functions that created tasks that start with a function have been updated to set ".fn" and ".fn_arg" instead of ".stack" and ".stack_size". Compile-tested only on x86. As noted in the first patch, s390 should take this conversion a bit further, but I'm not inclined to do that work myself. This patch (of 3): Instead of passing in a 'buf' and 'userbuf' argument, pass in an iov_iter. s390 needs more work to pass the iov_iter down further, or refactor, but I'd be more comfortable if someone who can test on s390 did that work. It's more convenient to convert the whole of read_from_oldmem() to take an iov_iter at the same time, so rename it to read_from_oldmem_iter() and add a temporary read_from_oldmem() wrapper that creates an iov_iter. Fix the discrepancy between the two places we check for the CP0 counter erratum in along with the incorrect comparison of the R4400 revision number against 0x30 which matches none and consistently consider all R4000 and R4400 processors affected, as documented in processor errata publications[1][2][3], following the mapping between CP0 PRId register values and processor models: PRId | Processor Model ---------+-------------------- 00000422 | R4000 Revision 2.2 00000430 | R4000 Revision 3.0 00000440 | R4400 Revision 1.0 00000450 | R4400 Revision 2.0 00000460 | R4400 Revision 3.0 No other revision of either processor has ever been spotted. Contrary to what has been stated in commit ce202cbb9e0b ("[MIPS] Assume R4000/R4400 newer than 3.0 don't have the mfc0 count bug") marking the CP0 counter as buggy does not preclude it from being used as either a clock event or a clock source device. It just cannot be used as both at a time, because in that case clock event interrupts will be occasionally lost, and the use as a clock event device takes precedence. Compare against 0x4ff in `can_use_mips_counter' so that a single machine instruction is produced. 2022-03-22drivers/base/node: consolidate node device subsystem initialization in ↵David Hildenbrand1-5/+0
node_dev_init() ... and call node_dev_init() after memory_dev_init() from driver_init(), so before any of the existing arch/subsys calls. All online nodes should be known at that point: early during boot, arch code determines node and zone ranges and sets the relevant nodes online; usually this happens in setup_arch(). This is in line with memory_dev_init(), which initializes the memory device subsystem and creates all memory block devices. Similar to memory_dev_init(), panic() if anything goes wrong, we don't want to continue with such basic initialization errors. The important part is that node_dev_init() gets called after memory_dev_init() and after cpu_dev_init(), but before any of the relevant archs call register_cpu() to register the new cpu device under the node device. The latter should be the case for the current users of topology_init(). Unfortunately, Clang did not have support for "sp" as a global register definition, and was crashing after the addition of current_stack_pointer. This has been fixed in Clang 14, but earlier Clang versions need to avoid this code, so add a versioned test and revert back to the open-coded asm instances. 2022-03-07MIPS: fix fortify panic when copying asm exception handlersAlexander Lobakin1-11/+11
With KCFLAGS="-O3", I was able to trigger a fortify-source memcpy() overflow panic on set_vi_srs_handler(). Although O3 level is not supported in the mainline, under some conditions that may've happened with any optimization settings, it's just a matter of inlining luck. The panic itself is correct, more precisely, 50/50 false-positive and not at the same time. From the one side, no real overflow happens. Exception handler defined in asm just gets copied to some reserved places in the memory. But the reason behind is that C code refers to that exception handler declares it as `char`, i.e. something of 1 byte length. It's obvious that the asm function itself is way more than 1 byte, so fortify logics thought we are going to past the symbol declared. The standard way to refer to asm symbols from C code which is not supposed to be called from C is to declare them as `extern const u8[]`. This is fully correct from any point of view, as any code itself is just a bunch of bytes (including 0 as it is for syms like _stext/_etext/etc.), and the exact size is not known at the moment of compilation. Adjust the type of the except_vec_vi_*() and related variables. Make set_handler() take `const` as a second argument to avoid cast-away warnings and give a little more room for optimization. Address errors have always been treated as unaliged accesses and handled as such. But address errors are also issued for illegal accesses like user to kernel space or accesses outside of implemented spaces. This change implements Linux exception handling for accesses to the illegal space above the CPU implemented maximum virtual user address and the MIPS 64bit architecture maximum. With this we can now use a fixed value for the maximum task size on every MIPS CPU and get a more optimized access_ok(). On x86, we decided that the READ_IMPLIES_EXEC flag needed to reflect the expectations, not the architectural behavior due to bad interactions as noted above, as always returning "1" on non-NX hardware breaks some mappings. The other part of the issue is "what does the MIPS toolchain do for PT_GNU_STACK?" The answer seems to be "by default, include PT_GNU_STACK, but mark it executable" (likely due to concerns over non-NX hardware): $ mipsel-linux-gnu-gcc -o hello_world hello_world.c $ llvm-readelf -lW hellow_world | grep GNU_STACK GNU_STACK 0x000000 0x00000000 0x00000000 0x00000 0x00000 RWE 0x10 Given that older hardware doesn't support non-executable memory, it seems safe to make the "PT_GNU_STACK is absent" logic mean "assume non-executable", but this might break very old software running on modern MIPS. This situation matches the ia32-on-x86_64 logic x86 uses (which assumes needing READ_IMPLIES_EXEC in that situation). But modern toolchains on modern MIPS hardware should follow a safer default (assume NX stack). A follow-up to this change would be to switch the MIPS toolchain to emit a non-executable PT_GNU_STACK, as this seems to be unneeded. Basic debug printks right before the mentioned line say: [ 0.048170] CPU: 1, smt_mask: So smt_mask, which is sibling mask obviously, is empty when entering the function. This is critical, as sched_core_cpu_starting() calculates core-scheduling parameters only once per CPU start, and it's crucial to have all the parameters filled in at that moment (at least it uses cpu_smt_mask() which in fact is `&cpu_sibling_map[cpu]` on MIPS). A bit of debugging led me to that set_cpu_sibling_map() performing the actual map calculation, was being invocated after notify_cpu_start(), and exactly the latter function starts CPU HP callback round (sched_core_cpu_starting() is basically a CPU HP callback). While the flow is same on ARM64 (maps after the notifier, although before calling set_cpu_online()), x86 started calculating sibling maps earlier than starting the CPU HP callbacks in Linux 4.14 (see [0] for the reference). Neither me nor my brief tests couldn't find any potential caveats in calculating the maps right after performing delay calibration, but the WARN splat is now gone. Removal of profile_task_ext, profile_munmap, and profile_handoff_task are the big successes for dead code removal this round. A bunch of small bug fixes are included, as most of the issues reported were small enough that they would not affect bisection so I simply added the fixes and did not fold the fixes into the changes they were fixing. There was a bug that broke coredumps piped to systemd-coredump. I dropped the change that caused that bug and replaced it entirely with something much more restrained. Unfortunately that required some rebasing. Some successes after this set of changes: There are few enough calls to do_exit to audit in a reasonable amount of time. The lifetime of struct kthread now matches the lifetime of struct task, and the pointer to struct kthread is no longer stored in set_child_tid. The flag SIGNAL_GROUP_COREDUMP is removed. The field group_exit_task is removed. Issues where task->exit_code was examined with signal->group_exit_code should been examined were fixed. There are several loosely related changes included because I am cleaning up and if I don't include them they will probably get lost.
