Patch series "remove Xen tmem leftovers". Since the removal of the Xen tmem driver in 2019, the cleancache hooks are entirely unused, as are large parts of frontswap. This series against linux-next (with the folio changes included) removes cleancaches, and cuts down frontswap to the bits actually used by zswap. The end-game which I have not yet reached yet is for fatal signals that generate coredumps to be short-circuit deliverable from complete_signal, for force_siginfo_to_task not to require changing userspace configured signal delivery state, and for the ptrace stops to always happen in locations where we can guarantee on all architectures that the all of the registers are saved and available on the stack. Removal of profile_task_ext, profile_munmap, and profile_handoff_task are the big successes for dead code removal this round. A bunch of small bug fixes are included, as most of the issues reported were small enough that they would not affect bisection so I simply added the fixes and did not fold the fixes into the changes they were fixing. There was a bug that broke coredumps piped to systemd-coredump. I dropped the change that caused that bug and replaced it entirely with something much more restrained. Unfortunately that required some rebasing. Some successes after this set of changes: There are few enough calls to do_exit to audit in a reasonable amount of time. The lifetime of struct kthread now matches the lifetime of struct task, and the pointer to struct kthread is no longer stored in set_child_tid. The flag SIGNAL_GROUP_COREDUMP is removed. The field group_exit_task is removed. Issues where task->exit_code was examined with signal->group_exit_code should been examined were fixed. There are several loosely related changes included because I am cleaning up and if I don't include them they will probably get lost. find_bit API and bitmap API are closely related, but inclusion paths are different - include/asm-generic and include/linux, correspondingly. In the past it made a lot of troubles due to circular dependencies and/or undefined symbols. Fix this by moving find.h under include/linux. 2022-01-08ptrace/m68k: Stop open coding ptrace_report_syscallEric W. Biederman1-11/+1
The generic function ptrace_report_syscall does a little more than syscall_trace on m68k. The function ptrace_report_syscall stops early if PT_TRACED is not set, it sets ptrace_message, and returns the result of fatal_signal_pending. Setting ptrace_message to a passed in value of 0 is effectively not setting ptrace_message, making that additional work a noop. Returning the result of fatal_signal_pending and letting the caller ignore the result becomes a noop in this change. When a process is ptraced, the flag PT_PTRACED is always set in current->ptrace. Testing for PT_PTRACED in ptrace_report_syscall is just an optimization to fail early if the process is not ptraced. Later on in ptrace_notify, ptrace_stop will test current->ptrace under tasklist_lock and skip performing any work if the task is not ptraced. 2021-12-13exit: Add and use make_task_dead.Eric W. Biederman2-2/+2
There are two big uses of do_exit. The first is it's design use to be the guts of the exit(2) system call. The second use is to terminate a task after something catastrophic has happened like a NULL pointer in kernel code. Add a function make_task_dead that is initialy exactly the same as do_exit to cover the cases where do_exit is called to handle catastrophic failure. In time this can probably be reduced to just a light wrapper around do_task_dead. For now keep it exactly the same so that there will be no behavioral differences introducing this new concept. Replace all of the uses of do_exit that use it for catastraphic task cleanup with make_task_dead to make it clear what the code is doing. Enable the memtest functionality and rearrange some code to prevent it from clobbering the initrd. The code to implement CONFIG_BLK_DEV_INITRD was conditional on !defined(CONFIG_SUN3). For simplicity, remove that test on the basis that m68k_ramdisk.size == 0 on Sun 3. The SLIME source code at http://sammy.net/sun3/ftp/pub/m68k/sun3/slime/slime-2.0.tar.gz indicates that no BI_RAMDISK entry is ever passed to the kernel due to #ifdef 0 around the relevant code. 2021-11-19signal: Replace force_fatal_sig with force_exit_sig when in doubtEric W. Biederman1-1/+1
Recently to prevent issues with SECCOMP_RET_KILL and similar signals being changed before they are delivered SA_IMMUTABLE was added. Unfortunately this broke debuggers[1][2] which reasonably expect to be able to trap synchronous SIGTRAP and SIGSEGV even when the target process is not configured to handle those signals. Add force_exit_sig and use it instead of force_fatal_sig where historically the code has directly called do_exit. This has the implementation benefits of going through the signal exit path (including generating core dumps) without the danger of allowing userspace to ignore or change these signals. This avoids userspace regressions as older kernels exited with do_exit which debuggers also can not intercept. In the future is should be possible to improve the quality of implementation of the kernel by changing some of these force_exit_sig calls to force_fatal_sig. That can be done where it matters on a case-by-case basis with careful analysis. Many architectures do not include asm-generic/cacheflush.h, so turn the includes on their head and add linux/cacheflush.h which includes asm/cacheflush.h. Move the flush_dcache_folio() declaration from asm-generic/cacheflush.h to linux/cacheflush.h and change linux/highmem.h to include linux/cacheflush.h instead of asm/cacheflush.h so that all necessary places will see flush_dcache_folio(). More functions should have their default implementations moved in the future, but those are for follow-on patches. This fixes csky, sparc and sparc64 which were missed in the commit which added flush_dcache_folio(). We want to specify flags when hotplugging memory. Let's prepare to pass flags to memblock_add_node() by adjusting all existing users. Note that when hotplugging memory the system is already up and running and we might have concurrent memblock users: for example, while we're hotplugging memory, kexec_file code might search for suitable memory regions to place kexec images. It's important to add the memory directly to memblock via a single call with the right flags, instead of adding the memory first and apply flags later: otherwise, concurrent memblock users might temporarily stumble over memblocks with wrong flags, which will be important in a follow-up patch that introduces a new flag to properly handle add_memory_driver_managed(). Pull memory folios from Matthew Wilcox: "Add memory folios, a new type to represent either order-0 pages or the head page of a compound page. This should be enough infrastructure to support filesystems converting from pages to folios. The point of all this churn is to allow filesystems and the page cache to manage memory in larger chunks than PAGE_SIZE. The original plan was to use compound pages like THP does, but I ran into problems with some functions expecting only a head page while others expect the precise page containing a particular byte. The folio type allows a function to declare that it's expecting only a head page. Almost incidentally, this allows us to remove various calls to VM_BUG_ON(PageTail(page)) and compound_head(). This converts just parts of the core MM and the page cache. For 5.17, we intend to convert various filesystems (XFS and AFS are ready; other filesystems may make it) and also convert more of the MM and page cache to folios. For 5.18, multi-page folios should be ready. The multi-page folios offer some improvement to some workloads. The 80% win is real, but appears to be an artificial benchmark (postgres startup, which isn't a serious workload). Real workloads (eg building the kernel, running postgres in a steady state, etc) seem to benefit between 0-10%. I haven't heard of any performance losses as a result of this series. Nobody has done any serious performance tuning; I imagine that tweaking the readahead algorithm could provide some more interesting wins. There are also other places where we could choose to create large folios and currently do not, such as writes that are larger than PAGE_SIZE. 'make randconfig' can produce a .config file with "CONFIG_MEMORY_RESERVE=" (no value) since it has no default. When a subsequent 'make all' is done, kconfig restarts the config and prompts for a value for MEMORY_RESERVE. This breaks scripting/automation where there is no interactive user input. 2021-10-24kbuild: use more subdir- for visiting subdirectories while cleaningMasahiro Yamada1-3/+1
Documentation/kbuild/makefiles.rst suggests to use "archclean" for cleaning arch/$(SRCARCH)/boot/, but it is not a hard requirement. Since commit d92cc4d51643 ("kbuild: require all architectures to have arch/$(SRCARCH)/Kbuild"), we can use the "subdir- += boot" trick for all architectures. This can take advantage of the parallel option (-j) for "make clean". I also cleaned up the comments in arch/$(SRCARCH)/Makefile. The "archdep" target no longer exists. Replace the blk_poll interface that requires the caller to keep a queue and cookie from the submissions with polling based on the bio. Polling for the bio itself leads to a few advantages: - the cookie construction can made entirely private in blk-mq.c - the caller does not need to remember the request_queue and cookie separately and thus sidesteps their lifetime issues - keeping the device and the cookie inside the bio allows to trivially support polling BIOs remapping by stacking drivers - a lot of code to propagate the cookie back up the submission path can be removed entirely. Add a m68k-only set_fc helper to set the SFC and DFC registers for the few places that need to override it for special MM operations, but disconnect that from the deprecated kernel-wide set_fs() API. 2021-09-24m68k: Leave stack mangling to asm wrapper of sigreturn()Al Viro5-105/+71
sigreturn has to deal with an unpleasant problem - exception stack frames have different sizes, depending upon the exception (and processor model, as well) and variable-sized part of exception frame may contain information needed for instruction restart. So when signal handler terminates and calls sigreturn to resume the execution at the place where we'd been when we caught the signal, it has to rearrange the frame at the bottom of kernel stack. Worse, it might need to open a gap in the kernel stack, shifting pt_regs towards lower addresses. Doing that from C is insane - we'd need to shift stack frames (return addresses, local variables, etc.) of C call chain, right under the nose of compiler and hope it won't fall apart horribly. What had been actually done is only slightly less insane - an inline asm in mangle_kernel_stack() moved the stuff around, then reset stack pointer and jumped to label in asm glue. However, we can avoid all that mess if the asm wrapper we have to use anyway would reserve some space on the stack between switch_stack and the C stack frame of do_{rt_,}sigreturn(). Then C part can simply memmove() pt_regs + switch_stack, memcpy() the variable part of exception frame into the opened gap - all of that without inline asm, buggering C call chain, magical jumps to asm labels, etc. Asm wrapper would need to know where the moved switch_stack has ended up - it might have been shifted into the gap we'd reserved before do_rt_sigreturn() call. That's where it needs to set the stack pointer to. So let the C part return just that and be done with that. While we are at it, the call of berr_040cleanup() we need to do when returning via 68040 bus error exception frame can be moved into C part as well.
