git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/akpm/mm Pull MM updates from Andrew Morton: - Yu Zhao's Multi-Gen LRU patches are here. They've been under test in linux-next for a couple of months without, to my knowledge, any negative reports (or any positive ones, come to that). - Also the Maple Tree from Liam Howlett. An overlapping range-based tree for vmas. It it apparently slightly more efficient in its own right, but is mainly targeted at enabling work to reduce mmap_lock contention. Liam has identified a number of other tree users in the kernel which could be beneficially onverted to mapletrees. Yu Zhao has identified a hard-to-hit but "easy to fix" lockdep splat at [1]. This has yet to be addressed due to Liam's unfortunately timed vacation. He is now back and we'll get this fixed up. - Dmitry Vyukov introduces KMSAN: the Kernel Memory Sanitizer. It uses clang-generated instrumentation to detect used-unintialized bugs down to the single bit level. KMSAN keeps finding bugs. New ones, as well as the legacy ones. - Yang Shi adds a userspace mechanism (madvise) to induce a collapse of memory into THPs. - Zach O'Keefe has expanded Yang Shi's madvise(MADV_COLLAPSE) to support file/shmem-backed pages. - userfaultfd updates from Axel Rasmussen - zsmalloc cleanups from Alexey Romanov - cleanups from Miaohe Lin: vmscan, hugetlb_cgroup, hugetlb and memory-failure - Huang Ying adds enhancements to NUMA balancing memory tiering mode's page promotion, with a new way of detecting hot pages. - memcg updates from Shakeel Butt: charging optimizations and reduced memory consumption. - memcg cleanups from Kairui Song. - memcg fixes and cleanups from Johannes Weiner. - Vishal Moola provides more folio conversions - Zhang Yi removed ll_rw_block() :( - migration enhancements from Peter Xu - migration error-path bugfixes from Huang Ying - Aneesh Kumar added ability for a device driver to alter the memory tiering promotion paths. For optimizations by PMEM drivers, DRM drivers, etc. - vma merging improvements from Jakub Matěn. - NUMA hinting cleanups from David Hildenbrand. - xu xin added aditional userspace visibility into KSM merging activity. - THP & KSM code consolidation from Qi Zheng. - more folio work from Matthew Wilcox. - KASAN updates from Andrey Konovalov. - DAMON cleanups from Kaixu Xia. - DAMON work from SeongJae Park: fixes, cleanups. - hugetlb sysfs cleanups from Muchun Song. - Mike Kravetz fixes locking issues in hugetlbfs and in hugetlb core. 2022-10-02kbuild: remove head-y syntaxMasahiro Yamada1-2/+0
Kbuild puts the objects listed in head-y at the head of vmlinux. Conventionally, we do this for head*.S, which contains the kernel entry point. A counter approach is to control the section order by the linker script. Actually, the code marked as __HEAD goes into the ".head.text" section, which is placed before the normal ".text" section. I do not know if both of them are needed. From the build system perspective, head-y is not mandatory. If you can achieve the proper code placement by the linker script only, it would be cleaner. I collected the current head-y objects into head-object-list.txt. It is a whitelist. My hope is it will be reduced in the long run. 2022-10-02kbuild: use obj-y instead extra-y for objects placed at the headMasahiro Yamada1-2/+2
The objects placed at the head of vmlinux need special treatments: - arch/$(SRCARCH)/Makefile adds them to head-y in order to place them before other archives in the linker command line. - arch/$(SRCARCH)/kernel/Makefile adds them to extra-y instead of obj-y to avoid them going into built-in.a. This commit gets rid of the latter. Create vmlinux.a to collect all the objects that are unconditionally linked to vmlinux. The objects listed in head-y are moved to the head of vmlinux.a by using 'ar m'. With this, arch/$(SRCARCH)/kernel/Makefile can consistently use obj-y for builtin objects. There is no *.o that is directly linked to vmlinux. Drop unneeded code in scripts/clang-tools/gen_compile_commands.py. $(AR) mPi needs 'T' to workaround the llvm-ar bug. The fix was suggested by Nathan Chancellor [1]. This is useful to battery-powered systems such as ChromeOS and Android. In addition, a new RCU_NOCB_CPU_CB_BOOST kernel boot parameter prevents offloaded callbacks from interfering with real-time workloads and with energy-efficiency mechanisms - Polled grace-period updates, perhaps most notably making these APIs account for both normal and expedited grace periods - Tasks RCU updates, perhaps most notably reducing the CPU overhead of RCU tasks trace grace periods by more than a factor of two on a system with 15,000 tasks. The reduction is expected to increase with the number of tasks, so it seems reasonable to hypothesize that a system with 150,000 tasks might see a 20-fold reduction in CPU overhead - Torture-test updates - Updates that merge RCU's dyntick-idle tracking into context tracking, thus reducing the overhead of transitioning to kernel mode from either idle or nohz_full userspace execution for kernels that track context independently of RCU. Enable qspinlock by the requirements mentioned in a8ad07e5240c9 ("asm-generic: qspinlock: Indicate the use of mixed-size atomics"). C-SKY only has "ldex/stex" for all atomic operations. So csky give a strong forward guarantee for "ldex/stex." That means when ldex grabbed the cache line into $L1, it would block other cores from snooping the address with several cycles. The atomic_fetch_add & xchg16 has the same forward guarantee level in C-SKY. Qspinlock has better code size and performance in a fast path. 2022-07-29profile: setup_profiling_timer() is moslty not implementedBen Dooks1-5/+0
The setup_profiling_timer() is mostly un-implemented by many architectures. In many places it isn't guarded by CONFIG_PROFILE which is needed for it to be used. Make it a weak symbol in kernel/profile.c and remove the 'return -EINVAL' implementations from the kenrel. There are a couple of architectures which do return 0 from the setup_profiling_timer() function but they don't seem to do anything else with it. To keep the /proc compatibility for now, leave these for a future update or removal. On ARM, this fixes the following sparse warning: arch/arm/kernel/smp.c:793:5: warning: symbol 'setup_profiling_timer' was not declared. Should it be static? Scattered across the archs are 3 basic forms of tlb_{start,end}_vma(). Provide two new MMU_GATHER_knobs to enumerate them and remove the per arch tlb_{start,end}_vma() implementations. - MMU_GATHER_NO_FLUSH_CACHE indicates the arch has flush_cache_range() but does *NOT* want to call it for each VMA. - MMU_GATHER_MERGE_VMAS indicates the arch wants to merge the invalidate across multiple VMAs if possible. With these it is possible to capture the three forms: 1) empty stubs; select MMU_GATHER_NO_FLUSH_CACHE and MMU_GATHER_MERGE_VMAS 2) start: flush_cache_range(), end: empty; select MMU_GATHER_MERGE_VMAS 3) start: flush_cache_range(), end: flush_tlb_range(); default Obviously, if the architecture does not have flush_cache_range() then it also doesn't need to select MMU_GATHER_NO_FLUSH_CACHE. Patch series "arch: make PxD_ORDER generically available", v2. The question what does PxD_ORDER define raises from time to time and there is still a conflict between MIPS and DAX definitions. Some time ago Matthew Wilcox suggested to use PMD_TABLE_ORDER to define the order of page table allocation: [1] https://lore.kernel.org/linux-arch/YPCJftSTUBEnq2lI@casper.infradead.org/ The parisc patch made it in, but mips didn't. Now mips defines from asm/include/pgtable.h were copied to loongarch which made it worse. Let's deal with it once and for all and rename PxD_ORDER defines to PxD_TABLE_ORDER or just drop them when the only possible order of page table is 0. This patch (of 15): This is the order of the page table allocation, not the order of a PTE. Since its always hardwired to 0, simply drop it. 2022-06-16mm: avoid unnecessary page fault retires on shared memory typesPeter Xu1-0/+4
I observed that for each of the shared file-backed page faults, we're very likely to retry one more time for the 1st write fault upon no page. It's because we'll need to release the mmap lock for dirty rate limit purpose with balance_dirty_pages_ratelimited() (in fault_dirty_shared_page()). Then after that throttling we return VM_FAULT_RETRY. We did that probably because VM_FAULT_RETRY is the only way we can return to the fault handler at that time telling it we've released the mmap lock. However that's not ideal because it's very likely the fault does not need to be retried at all since the pgtable was well installed before the throttling, so the next continuous fault (including taking mmap read lock, walk the pgtable, etc.) could be in most cases unnecessary. It's not only slowing down page faults for shared file-backed, but also add more mmap lock contention which is in most cases not needed at all. To observe this, one could try to write to some shmem page and look at "pgfault" value in /proc/vmstat, then we should expect 2 counts for each shmem write simply because we retried, and vm event "pgfault" will capture that. To make it more efficient, add a new VM_FAULT_COMPLETED return code just to show that we've completed the whole fault and released the lock. It's also a hint that we should very possibly not need another fault immediately on this page because we've just completed it. This patch provides a ~12% perf boost on my aarch64 test VM with a simple program sequentially dirtying 400MB shmem file being mmap()ed and these are the time it needs: Before: 650.980 ms (+-1.94%) After: 569.396 ms (+-1.38%) I believe it could help more than that. We need some special care on GUP and the s390 pgfault handler (for gmap code before returning from pgfault), the rest changes in the page fault handlers should be relatively straightforward. Another thing to mention is that mm_account_fault() does take this new fault as a generic fault to be accounted, unlike VM_FAULT_RETRY. I explicitly didn't touch hmm_vma_fault() and break_ksm() because they do not handle VM_FAULT_RETRY even with existing code, so I'm literally keeping them as-is. 2022-05-19csky: Use do_kernel_power_off()Dmitry Osipenko1-4/+2
Kernel now supports chained power-off handlers. Use do_kernel_power_off() that invokes chained power-off handlers. It also invokes legacy pm_power_off() for now, which will be removed once all drivers will be converted to the new sys-off API. 2022-05-13printk: stop including cache.h from printk.hPeter Collingbourne1-1/+1
An inclusion of cache.h in printk.h was added in 2014 in commit c28aa1f0a847 ("printk/cache: mark printk_once test variable __read_mostly") in order to bring in the definition of __read_mostly. The usage of __read_mostly was later removed in commit 3ec25826ae33 ("printk: Tie printk_once / printk_deferred_once into .data.once for reset") which made the inclusion of cache.h unnecessary, so remove it. We have a small amount of code that depended on the inclusion of cache.h from printk.h; fix that code to include the appropriate header. This fixes a circular inclusion on arm64 (linux/printk.h -> linux/cache.h -> asm/cache.h -> linux/kasan-enabled.h -> linux/static_key.h -> linux/jump_label.h -> linux/bug.h -> asm/bug.h -> linux/printk.h) that would otherwise be introduced by the next patch. Build tested using {allyesconfig, defconfig} x {arm64,x86_64}. 2022-05-07fork: Generalize PF_IO_WORKER handlingEric W. Biederman1-4/+3
Add fn and fn_arg members into struct kernel_clone_args and test for them in copy_thread (instead of testing for PF_KTHREAD | PF_IO_WORKER). This allows any task that wants to be a user space task that only runs in kernel mode to use this functionality. The code on x86 is an exception and still retains a PF_KTHREAD test because x86 unlikely everything else handles kthreads slightly differently than user space tasks that start with a function. The functions that created tasks that start with a function have been updated to set ".fn" and ".fn_arg" instead of ".stack" and ".stack_size". These functions are fork_idle(), create_io_thread(), kernel_thread(), and user_mode_thread(). Link: https://lkml.kernel.org/r/20220506141512.516114-4-ebiederm@xmission.com Signed-off-by: "Eric W. 2022-05-07fork: Pass struct kernel_clone_args into copy_threadEric W. Biederman1-5/+5
With io_uring we have started supporting tasks that are for most purposes user space tasks that exclusively run code in kernel mode. The kernel task that exec's init and tasks that exec user mode helpers are also user mode tasks that just run kernel code until they call kernel execve. Pass kernel_clone_args into copy_thread so these oddball tasks can be supported more cleanly and easily. v2: Fix spelling of kenrel_clone_args on h8300 Link: https://lkml.kernel.org/r/20220506141512.516114-2-ebiederm@xmission.com Signed-off-by: "Eric W. Add conditional atomic operations' optimization: - arch_atomic_fetch_add_unless - arch_atomic_inc_unless_negative - arch_atomic_dec_unless_positive - arch_atomic_dec_if_positive Comments by Boqun: FWIW, you probably need to make sure that a barrier instruction inside an lr/sc loop is a good thing. IIUC, the execution time of a barrier instruction is determined by the status of store buffers and invalidate queues (and probably other stuffs), so it may increase the execution time of the lr/sc loop, and make it unlikely to succeed.
