2016-11-22ptrace: Don't allow accessing an undumpable mmEric W. Biederman1-2/+2
It is the reasonable expectation that if an executable file is not readable there will be no way for a user without special privileges to read the file. This is enforced in ptrace_attach but if ptrace is already attached before exec there is no enforcement for read-only executables. As the only way to read such an mm is through access_process_vm spin a variant called ptrace_access_vm that will fail if the target process is not being ptraced by the current process, or the current process did not have sufficient privileges when ptracing began to read the target processes mm. In the ptrace implementations replace access_process_vm by ptrace_access_vm. There remain several ptrace sites that still use access_process_vm as they are reading the target executables instructions (for kernel consumption) or register stacks. As such it does not appear necessary to add a permission check to those calls. This bug has always existed in Linux. 2016-10-19mm: replace access_process_vm() write parameter with gup_flagsLorenzo Stoakes1-2/+3
This removes the 'write' argument from access_process_vm() and replaces it with 'gup_flags' as use of this function previously silently implied FOLL_FORCE, whereas after this patch callers explicitly pass this flag. We make this explicit as use of FOLL_FORCE can result in surprising behaviour (and hence bugs) within the mm subsystem. 2016-10-07nmi_backtrace: generate one-line reports for idle cpusChris Metcalf1-0/+1
When doing an nmi backtrace of many cores, most of which are idle, the output is a little overwhelming and very uninformative. Suppress messages for cpus that are idling when they are interrupted and just emit one line, "NMI backtrace for N skipped: idling at pc 0xNNN". We do this by grouping all the cpuidle code together into a new .cpuidle.text section, and then checking the address of the interrupted PC to see if it lies within that section. This commit suitably tags x86 and tile idle routines, and only adds in the minimal framework for other architectures. 2016-08-24ftrace: Add return address pointer to ftrace_ret_stackJosh Poimboeuf1-1/+1
Storing this value will help prevent unwinders from getting out of sync with the function graph tracer ret_stack. Now instead of needing a stateful iterator, they can compare the return address pointer to find the right ret_stack entry. Note that an array of 50 ftrace_ret_stack structs is allocated for every task. So when an arch implements this, it will add either 200 or 400 bytes of memory usage per task (depending on whether it's a 32-bit or 64-bit platform). 2016-08-04dma-mapping: use unsigned long for dma_attrsKrzysztof Kozlowski1-4/+4
The dma-mapping core and the implementations do not change the DMA attributes passed by pointer. Thus the pointer can point to const data. However the attributes do not have to be a bitfield. Instead unsigned long will do fine: 1. This is just simpler. Both in terms of reading the code and setting attributes. Instead of initializing local attributes on the stack and passing pointer to it to dma_set_attr(), just set the bits. 2. It brings safeness and checking for const correctness because the attributes are passed by value. 2016-02-16gpio: Include linux/gpio.h instead of asm/gpio.hBjorn Helgaas1-1/+1
Most arches have an asm/gpio.h that merely includes linux/gpio.h. The others select ARCH_HAVE_CUSTOM_GPIO_H, and when that's selected, linux/gpio.h includes asm/gpio.h. 2015-02-12all arches, signal: move restart_block to struct task_structAndy Lutomirski1-1/+1
If an attacker can cause a controlled kernel stack overflow, overwriting the restart block is a very juicy exploit target. This is because the restart_block is held in the same memory allocation as the kernel stack. Moving the restart block to struct task_struct prevents this exploit by making the restart_block harder to locate. Note that there are other fields in thread_info that are also easy targets, at least on some architectures. It's also a decent simplification, since the restart code is more or less identical on all architectures. 2014-08-26blackfin: Replace __get_cpu_var usesChristoph Lameter1-5/+5
__get_cpu_var() is used for multiple purposes in the kernel source. One of them is address calculation via the form &__get_cpu_var(x). This calculates the address for the instance of the percpu variable of the current processor based on an offset. Other use cases are for storing and retrieving data from the current processors percpu area. __get_cpu_var() can be used as an lvalue when writing data or on the right side of an assignment. __get_cpu_var() is defined as : #define __get_cpu_var(var) (*this_cpu_ptr(&(var))) __get_cpu_var() always only does an address determination. However, store and retrieve operations could use a segment prefix (or global register on other platforms) to avoid the address calculation. this_cpu_write() and this_cpu_read() can directly take an offset into a percpu area and use optimized assembly code to read and write per cpu variables. This patch converts __get_cpu_var into either an explicit address calculation using this_cpu_ptr() or into a use of this_cpu operations that use the offset. Thereby address calculations are avoided and less registers are used when code is generated. At the end of the patch set all uses of __get_cpu_var have been removed so the macro is removed too. The patch set includes passes over all arches as well. Once these operations are used throughout then specialized macros can be defined in non -x86 arches as well in order to optimize per cpu access by f.e. using a global register that may be set to the per cpu base. Transformations done to __get_cpu_var() 1. Determine the address of the percpu instance of the current processor. DEFINE_PER_CPU(int, y); int *x = &__get_cpu_var(y); Converts to int *x = this_cpu_ptr(&y); 2. Same as #1 but this time an array structure is involved. DEFINE_PER_CPU(int, y[20]); int *x = __get_cpu_var(y); Converts to int *x = this_cpu_ptr(y); 3. Retrieve the content of the current processors instance of a per cpu variable. DEFINE_PER_CPU(int, y); int x = __get_cpu_var(y) Converts to int x = __this_cpu_read(y); 4. Retrieve the content of a percpu struct DEFINE_PER_CPU(struct mystruct, y); struct mystruct x = __get_cpu_var(y); Converts to memcpy(&x, this_cpu_ptr(&y), sizeof(x)); 5. Assignment to a per cpu variable DEFINE_PER_CPU(int, y) __get_cpu_var(y) = x; Converts to __this_cpu_write(y, x); 6. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rostedt/linux-trace Pull tracing updates from Steven Rostedt: "This pull request has a lot of work done. The main thing is the changes to the ftrace function callback infrastructure. It's introducing a way to allow different functions to call directly different trampolines instead of all calling the same "mcount" one. The only user of this for now is the function graph tracer, which always had a different trampoline, but the function tracer trampoline was called and did basically nothing, and then the function graph tracer trampoline was called. The difference now, is that the function graph tracer trampoline can be called directly if a function is only being traced by the function graph trampoline. If function tracing is also happening on the same function, the old way is still done. The accounting for this takes up more memory when function graph tracing is activated, as it needs to keep track of which functions it uses. I have a new way that wont take as much memory, but it's not ready yet for this merge window, and will have to wait for the next one. Another big change was the removal of the ftrace_start/stop() calls that were used by the suspend/resume code that stopped function tracing when entering into suspend and resume paths. The stop of ftrace was done because there was some function that would crash the system if one called smp_processor_id()! The stop/start was a big hammer to solve the issue at the time, which was when ftrace was first introduced into Linux. Now ftrace has better infrastructure to debug such issues, and I found the problem function and labeled it with "notrace" and function tracing can now safely be activated all the way down into the guts of suspend and resume Other changes include clean ups of uprobe code, clean up of the trace_seq() code, and other various small fixes and clean ups to ftrace and tracing" * tag 'trace-3.17' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rostedt/linux-trace: (57 commits) ftrace: Add warning if tramp hash does not match nr_trampolines ftrace: Fix trampoline hash update check on rec->flags ring-buffer: Use rb_page_size() instead of open coded head_page size ftrace: Rename ftrace_ops field from trampolines to nr_trampolines tracing: Convert local function_graph functions to static ftrace: Do not copy old hash when resetting tracing: let user specify tracing_thresh after selecting function_graph ring-buffer: Always run per-cpu ring buffer resize with schedule_work_on() tracing: Remove function_trace_stop and HAVE_FUNCTION_TRACE_MCOUNT_TEST s390/ftrace: remove check of obsolete variable function_trace_stop arm64, ftrace: Remove check of obsolete variable function_trace_stop Blackfin: ftrace: Remove check of obsolete variable function_trace_stop metag: ftrace: Remove check of obsolete variable function_trace_stop microblaze: ftrace: Remove check of obsolete variable function_trace_stop MIPS: ftrace: Remove check of obsolete variable function_trace_stop parisc: ftrace: Remove check of obsolete variable function_trace_stop sh: ftrace: Remove check of obsolete variable function_trace_stop sparc64,ftrace: Remove check of obsolete variable function_trace_stop tile: ftrace: Remove check of obsolete variable function_trace_stop ftrace: x86: Remove check of obsolete variable function_trace_stop ...
