2010-03-30include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking ↵Tejun Heo3-0/+3
implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies. percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is used as the basis of conversion. http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py The script does the followings. * Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used, gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h. * When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered - alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there doesn't seem to be any matching order. * If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the file. The conversion was done in the following steps. 1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400 files. 2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion, some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added inclusions to around 150 files. 3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits from #2 to make sure no file was left behind. 4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed. e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually. 5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as necessary. 6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h. 7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq). * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config. * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig * ia64 SMP allmodconfig * s390 SMP allmodconfig * alpha SMP allmodconfig * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig 8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as a separate patch and serve as bisection point. Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step 6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch. If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of the specific arch. 2010-02-20MM: Pass a PTE pointer to update_mmu_cache() rather than the PTE itselfRussell King1-2/+2
On VIVT ARM, when we have multiple shared mappings of the same file in the same MM, we need to ensure that we have coherency across all copies. We do this via make_coherent() by making the pages uncacheable. This used to work fine, until we allowed highmem with highpte - we now have a page table which is mapped as required, and is not available for modification via update_mmu_cache(). Ralf Beache suggested getting rid of the PTE value passed to update_mmu_cache(): On MIPS update_mmu_cache() calls __update_tlb() which walks pagetables to construct a pointer to the pte again. Passing a pte_t * is much more elegant. Maybe we might even replace the pte argument with the pte_t? Ben Herrenschmidt would also like the pte pointer for PowerPC: Passing the ptep in there is exactly what I want. I want that -instead- of the PTE value, because I have issue on some ppc cases, for I$/D$ coherency, where set_pte_at() may decide to mask out the _PAGE_EXEC. So, pass in the mapped page table pointer into update_mmu_cache(), and remove the PTE value, updating all implementations and call sites to suit. 2009-06-21Move FAULT_FLAG_xyz into handle_mm_fault() callersLinus Torvalds1-1/+1
This allows the callers to now pass down the full set of FAULT_FLAG_xyz flags to handle_mm_fault(). All callers have been (mechanically) converted to the new calling convention, there's almost certainly room for architectures to clean up their code and then add FAULT_FLAG_RETRY when that support is added. 2009-04-01generic debug pageallocAkinobu Mita1-18/+0
CONFIG_DEBUG_PAGEALLOC is now supported by x86, powerpc, sparc64, and s390. This patch implements it for the rest of the architectures by filling the pages with poison byte patterns after free_pages() and verifying the poison patterns before alloc_pages(). This generic one cannot detect invalid page accesses immediately but invalid read access may cause invalid dereference by poisoned memory and invalid write access can be detected after a long delay. 2009-01-06arch/avr32: Eliminate NULL test and memset after alloc_bootmemJulia Lawall1-1/+0
As noted by Akinobu Mita in patch b1fceac2b9e04d278316b2faddf276015fc06e3b, alloc_bootmem and related functions never return NULL and always return a zeroed region of memory. Thus a NULL test or memset after calls to these functions is unnecessary. This was fixed using the following semantic patch. This also removes the following redundant information display: - free pages, printed by show_free_areas() - pages in slabs, printed by show_free_areas() - pages in swapcache, printed by show_swap_cache_info() where show_mem() calls show_free_areas(), which calls show_swap_cache_info(). 2008-07-24PAGE_ALIGN(): correctly handle 64-bit values on 32-bit architecturesAndrea Righi1-0/+1
On 32-bit architectures PAGE_ALIGN() truncates 64-bit values to the 32-bit boundary. For example: u64 val = PAGE_ALIGN(size); always returns a value < 4GB even if size is greater than 4GB. The problem resides in PAGE_MASK definition (from include/asm-x86/page.h for example): #define PAGE_SHIFT 12 #define PAGE_SIZE (_AC(1,UL) << PAGE_SHIFT) #define PAGE_MASK (~(PAGE_SIZE-1)) ... #define PAGE_ALIGN(addr) (((addr)+PAGE_SIZE-1)&PAGE_MASK) The "~" is performed on a 32-bit value, so everything in "and" with PAGE_MASK greater than 4GB will be truncated to the 32-bit boundary. Using the ALIGN() macro seems to be the right way, because it uses typeof(addr) for the mask. Also move the PAGE_ALIGN() definitions out of include/asm-*/page.h in include/linux/mm.h. 2008-07-24mm: drop unneeded pgdat argument from free_area_init_node()Johannes Weiner1-1/+1
free_area_init_node() gets passed in the node id as well as the node descriptor. 2008-07-02avr32: Store virtual addresses in the PGDHaavard Skinnemoen1-1/+3
Instead of storing physical addresses along with page flags in the PGD, store virtual addresses and use NULL to indicate a not present second-level page table. A non-page-aligned page table indicates a bad PMD. This simplifies the TLB miss handler since it no longer has to check the Present bit and no longer has to convert the PGD entry from physical to virtual address. Instead, it has to check for a NULL entry, which is slightly cheaper than either. Signed-off-by: Haavard Skinnemoen <haavard.skinnemoen@atmel.com>

2007-12-07[AVR32] Fix copy_to_user_page() breakageHaavard Skinnemoen1-10/+10
The current implementation of copy_to_user_page() gives "vaddr" to the cache instruction when trying to sync the icache with the dcache. If vaddr does not exist in the TLB, the CPU will silently abort the operation, which may result in the caches staying out of sync. To fix this, pass the "dst" parameter to flush_icache_range() instead -- we know this is valid because we just wrote to it. Signed-off-by: Haavard Skinnemoen <hskinnemoen@atmel.com>
2007-10-19pid namespaces: define is_global_init() and is_container_init()Serge E. Hallyn1-3/+3
is_init() is an ambiguous name for the pid==1 check. Split it into is_global_init() and is_container_init(). A cgroup init has it's tsk->pid == 1. A global init also has it's tsk->pid == 1 and it's active pid namespace is the init_pid_ns. But rather than check the active pid namespace, compare the task structure with 'init_pid_ns.child_reaper', which is initialized during boot to the /sbin/init process and never changes. Changelog: 2.6.22-rc4-mm2-pidns1: - Use 'init_pid_ns.child_reaper' to determine if a given task is the global init (/sbin/init) process. This would improve performance and remove dependence on the task_pid(). 2.6.21-mm2-pidns2: - [Sukadev Bhattiprolu] Changed is_container_init() calls in {powerpc, ppc,avr32}/traps.c for the _exception() call to is_global_init(). This way, we kill only the cgroup if the cgroup's init has a bug rather than force a kernel panic. dma_cache_(wback|inv|wback_inv) were the earliest attempt on a generalized cache managment API for I/O purposes. Originally it was basically the raw MIPS low level cache API exported to the entire world. 2007-10-16During VM oom condition, kill all threads in process groupWill Schmidt1-1/+1
We have had complaints where a threaded application is left in a bad state after one of it's threads is killed when we hit a VM: out_of_memory condition. Killing just one of the process threads can leave the application in a bad state, whereas killing the entire process group would allow for the application to restart, or be otherwise handled, and makes it very obvious that something has gone wrong. This change allows the entire process group to be taken down, rather than just the one thread. 2007-07-19mm: fault feedback #2Nick Piggin1-12/+11
This patch completes Linus's wish that the fault return codes be made into bit flags, which I agree makes everything nicer. This requires requires all handle_mm_fault callers to be modified (possibly the modifications should go further and do things like fault accounting in handle_mm_fault -- however that would be for another patch). 2007-06-23[AVR32] Fix bug in invalidate_dcache_region()Haavard Skinnemoen1-9/+5
If (start + size) is not cacheline aligned and (start & mask) > (end & mask), the last but one cacheline won't be invalidated as it should. Fix this by rounding `end' down to the nearest cacheline boundary if it gets adjusted due to misalignment. Also flush the write buffer unconditionally -- if the dcache wrote back a line just before we invalidated it, the dirty data may be sitting in the write buffer waiting to corrupt our buffer later. 2007-05-13[AVR32] optimize pagefault pathChristoph Hellwig1-24/+12

2007-05-09[AVR32] Implement dma_{alloc,free}_writecombine()Haavard Skinnemoen1-4/+8
Implement dma_alloc_writecombine() and its dma_free_writecombine() counterpart. These will do basically the same thing as dma_alloc_coherent() except that the virtual mapping will allow write buffering, causing better performance for certain use cases like frame buffers. The same API is already available on ARM. Signed-off-by: Haavard Skinnemoen <hskinnemoen@atmel.com>
2007-05-08move die notifier handling to common codeChristoph Hellwig1-1/+1
This patch moves the die notifier handling to common code. Previous various architectures had exactly the same code for it. Note that the new code is compiled unconditionally, this should be understood as an appel to the other architecture maintainer to implement support for it aswell (aka sprinkling a notify_die or two in the proper place) arm had a notifiy_die that did something totally different, I renamed it to arm_notify_die as part of the patch and made it static to the file it's declared and used at. avr32 used to pass slightly less information through this interface and I brought it into line with the other architectures. 2007-04-27[AVR32] Clean up exception handling codeHaavard Skinnemoen1-75/+41
* Use generic BUG() handling * Remove some useless debug statements * Use a common function _exception() to send signals or oops when an exception can't be handled. This makes sure init doesn't enter an infinite exception loop as well. Borrowed from powerpc. * Add some basic exception tracing support to the page fault code. * Rework dump_stack(), show_regs() and friends and move everything into process.c * Print information about configuration options and chip type when oopsing Signed-off-by: Haavard Skinnemoen <hskinnemoen@atmel.com>
2007-03-07[AVR32] Don't use kmap() in flush_icache_page()Haavard Skinnemoen1-2/+1

2007-02-12[PATCH] mark struct file_operations const 2Arjan van de Ven1-1/+1
Many struct file_operations in the kernel can be "const". Marking them const moves these to the .rodata section, which avoids false sharing with potential dirty data. In addition it'll catch accidental writes at compile time to these shared resources. 2006-12-07[PATCH] Pass struct dev pointer to dma_cache_sync()Ralf Baechle1-1/+1
Pass struct dev pointer to dma_cache_sync() dma_cache_sync() is ill-designed in that it does not have a struct device pointer argument which makes proper support for systems that consist of a mix of coherent and non-coherent DMA devices hard. 2006-09-26[PATCH] avr32 architectureHaavard Skinnemoen9-0/+1718
This adds support for the Atmel AVR32 architecture as well as the AT32AP7000 CPU and the AT32STK1000 development board. AVR32 is a new high-performance 32-bit RISC microprocessor core, designed for cost-sensitive embedded applications, with particular emphasis on low power consumption and high code density. The AVR32 architecture is not binary compatible with earlier 8-bit AVR architectures. The AVR32 architecture, including the instruction set, is described by the AVR32 Architecture Manual, available from http://www.atmel.com/dyn/resources/prod_documents/doc32000.pdf The Atmel AT32AP7000 is the first CPU implementing the AVR32 architecture. It features a 7-stage pipeline, 16KB instruction and data caches and a full Memory Management Unit. It also comes with a large set of integrated peripherals, many of which are shared with the AT91 ARM-based controllers from Atmel. Full data sheet is available from http://www.atmel.com/dyn/resources/prod_documents/doc32003.pdf while the CPU core implementation including caches and MMU is documented by the AVR32 AP Technical Reference, available from http://www.atmel.com/dyn/resources/prod_documents/doc32001.pdf Information about the AT32STK1000 development board can be found at http://www.atmel.com/dyn/products/tools_card.asp?tool_id=3918 including a BSP CD image with an earlier version of this patch, development tools (binaries and source/patches) and a root filesystem image suitable for booting from SD card. Alternatively, there's a preliminary "getting started" guide available at http://avr32linux.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/GettingStarted which provides links to the sources and patches you will need in order to set up a cross-compiling environment for avr32-linux. This patch, as well as the other patches included with the BSP and the toolchain patches, is actively supported by Atmel Corporation.
