git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/akpm/mm Pull MM updates from Andrew Morton: - Yu Zhao's Multi-Gen LRU patches are here. They've been under test in linux-next for a couple of months without, to my knowledge, any negative reports (or any positive ones, come to that). - Also the Maple Tree from Liam Howlett. An overlapping range-based tree for vmas. It it apparently slightly more efficient in its own right, but is mainly targeted at enabling work to reduce mmap_lock contention. Liam has identified a number of other tree users in the kernel which could be beneficially onverted to mapletrees. Yu Zhao has identified a hard-to-hit but "easy to fix" lockdep splat at [1]. This has yet to be addressed due to Liam's unfortunately timed vacation. He is now back and we'll get this fixed up. - Dmitry Vyukov introduces KMSAN: the Kernel Memory Sanitizer. It uses clang-generated instrumentation to detect used-unintialized bugs down to the single bit level. KMSAN keeps finding bugs. New ones, as well as the legacy ones. - Yang Shi adds a userspace mechanism (madvise) to induce a collapse of memory into THPs. - Zach O'Keefe has expanded Yang Shi's madvise(MADV_COLLAPSE) to support file/shmem-backed pages. - userfaultfd updates from Axel Rasmussen - zsmalloc cleanups from Alexey Romanov - cleanups from Miaohe Lin: vmscan, hugetlb_cgroup, hugetlb and memory-failure - Huang Ying adds enhancements to NUMA balancing memory tiering mode's page promotion, with a new way of detecting hot pages. - memcg updates from Shakeel Butt: charging optimizations and reduced memory consumption. - memcg cleanups from Kairui Song. - memcg fixes and cleanups from Johannes Weiner. - Vishal Moola provides more folio conversions - Zhang Yi removed ll_rw_block() :( - migration enhancements from Peter Xu - migration error-path bugfixes from Huang Ying - Aneesh Kumar added ability for a device driver to alter the memory tiering promotion paths. For optimizations by PMEM drivers, DRM drivers, etc. - vma merging improvements from Jakub Matěn. - NUMA hinting cleanups from David Hildenbrand. - xu xin added aditional userspace visibility into KSM merging activity. - THP & KSM code consolidation from Qi Zheng. - more folio work from Matthew Wilcox. - KASAN updates from Andrey Konovalov. - DAMON cleanups from Kaixu Xia. - DAMON work from SeongJae Park: fixes, cleanups. - hugetlb sysfs cleanups from Muchun Song. - Mike Kravetz fixes locking issues in hugetlbfs and in hugetlb core. 2022-10-02kbuild: remove head-y syntaxMasahiro Yamada1-2/+0
Kbuild puts the objects listed in head-y at the head of vmlinux. Conventionally, we do this for head*.S, which contains the kernel entry point. A counter approach is to control the section order by the linker script. Actually, the code marked as __HEAD goes into the ".head.text" section, which is placed before the normal ".text" section. I do not know if both of them are needed. From the build system perspective, head-y is not mandatory. If you can achieve the proper code placement by the linker script only, it would be cleaner. I collected the current head-y objects into head-object-list.txt. It is a whitelist. My hope is it will be reduced in the long run. 2022-10-02kbuild: use obj-y instead extra-y for objects placed at the headMasahiro Yamada1-2/+2
The objects placed at the head of vmlinux need special treatments: - arch/$(SRCARCH)/Makefile adds them to head-y in order to place them before other archives in the linker command line. - arch/$(SRCARCH)/kernel/Makefile adds them to extra-y instead of obj-y to avoid them going into built-in.a. This commit gets rid of the latter. Create vmlinux.a to collect all the objects that are unconditionally linked to vmlinux. The objects listed in head-y are moved to the head of vmlinux.a by using 'ar m'. With this, arch/$(SRCARCH)/kernel/Makefile can consistently use obj-y for builtin objects. There is no *.o that is directly linked to vmlinux. Drop unneeded code in scripts/clang-tools/gen_compile_commands.py. $(AR) mPi needs 'T' to workaround the llvm-ar bug. The fix was suggested by Nathan Chancellor [1]. 2022-09-11treewide: defconfig: address renamed CONFIG_DEBUG_INFO=yArnd Bergmann1-1/+1
CONFIG_DEBUG_INFO is now implicitly selected if one picks one of the explicit options that could be DEBUG_INFO_DWARF_TOOLCHAIN_DEFAULT, DEBUG_INFO_DWARF4, DEBUG_INFO_DWARF5. This was actually not what I had in mind when I suggested making it a 'choice' statement, but it's too late to change again now, and the Kconfig logic is more sensible in the new form. Change any defconfig file that had CONFIG_DEBUG_INFO enabled but did not pick DWARF4 or DWARF5 explicitly to now pick the toolchain default. 2022-07-29profile: setup_profiling_timer() is moslty not implementedBen Dooks1-8/+0
The setup_profiling_timer() is mostly un-implemented by many architectures. In many places it isn't guarded by CONFIG_PROFILE which is needed for it to be used. Make it a weak symbol in kernel/profile.c and remove the 'return -EINVAL' implementations from the kenrel. There are a couple of architectures which do return 0 from the setup_profiling_timer() function but they don't seem to do anything else with it. To keep the /proc compatibility for now, leave these for a future update or removal. On ARM, this fixes the following sparse warning: arch/arm/kernel/smp.c:793:5: warning: symbol 'setup_profiling_timer' was not declared. Should it be static? 2022-07-27kbuild: drop support for CONFIG_CC_OPTIMIZE_FOR_PERFORMANCE_O3Nick Desaulniers13-13/+0
The difference in most compilers between `-O3` and `-O2` is mostly down to whether loops with statically determinable trip counts are fully unrolled vs unrolled to a multiple of SIMD width. This patch is effectively a revert of commit 15f5db60a137 ("kbuild, arc: add CONFIG_CC_OPTIMIZE_FOR_PERFORMANCE_O3 for ARC") without re-adding ARCH_CFLAGS Ever since commit cfdbc2e16e65 ("ARC: Build system: Makefiles, Kconfig, Linker script") ARC has been built with -O3, though the reason for doing so was not specified in inline comments or the commit message. This commit does not re-add -O3 to arch/arc/Makefile. Folks looking to experiment with `-O3` (or any compiler flag for that matter) may pass them along to the command line invocation of make: $ make KCFLAGS=-O3 Code that looks to re-add an explicit Kconfig option for `-O3` should provide: 1. A rigorous and reproducible performance profile of a reasonable userspace workload that demonstrates a hot loop in the kernel that would benefit from `-O3` over `-O2`. 2. 2022-06-24jump_label: make initial NOP patching the special caseArd Biesheuvel1-13/+0
Instead of defaulting to patching NOP opcodes at init time, and leaving it to the architectures to override this if this is not needed, switch to a model where doing nothing is the default. This is the common case by far, as only MIPS requires NOP patching at init time. On all other architectures, the correct encodings are emitted by the compiler and so no initial patching is needed. 2022-06-16mm: avoid unnecessary page fault retires on shared memory typesPeter Xu1-0/+4
I observed that for each of the shared file-backed page faults, we're very likely to retry one more time for the 1st write fault upon no page. It's because we'll need to release the mmap lock for dirty rate limit purpose with balance_dirty_pages_ratelimited() (in fault_dirty_shared_page()). Then after that throttling we return VM_FAULT_RETRY. We did that probably because VM_FAULT_RETRY is the only way we can return to the fault handler at that time telling it we've released the mmap lock. However that's not ideal because it's very likely the fault does not need to be retried at all since the pgtable was well installed before the throttling, so the next continuous fault (including taking mmap read lock, walk the pgtable, etc.) could be in most cases unnecessary. It's not only slowing down page faults for shared file-backed, but also add more mmap lock contention which is in most cases not needed at all. To observe this, one could try to write to some shmem page and look at "pgfault" value in /proc/vmstat, then we should expect 2 counts for each shmem write simply because we retried, and vm event "pgfault" will capture that. To make it more efficient, add a new VM_FAULT_COMPLETED return code just to show that we've completed the whole fault and released the lock. It's also a hint that we should very possibly not need another fault immediately on this page because we've just completed it. This patch provides a ~12% perf boost on my aarch64 test VM with a simple program sequentially dirtying 400MB shmem file being mmap()ed and these are the time it needs: Before: 650.980 ms (+-1.94%) After: 569.396 ms (+-1.38%) I believe it could help more than that. We need some special care on GUP and the s390 pgfault handler (for gmap code before returning from pgfault), the rest changes in the page fault handlers should be relatively straightforward. Another thing to mention is that mm_account_fault() does take this new fault as a generic fault to be accounted, unlike VM_FAULT_RETRY. I explicitly didn't touch hmm_vma_fault() and break_ksm() because they do not handle VM_FAULT_RETRY even with existing code, so I'm literally keeping them as-is. Add fn and fn_arg members into struct kernel_clone_args and test for them in copy_thread (instead of testing for PF_KTHREAD | PF_IO_WORKER). This allows any task that wants to be a user space task that only runs in kernel mode to use this functionality. The code on x86 is an exception and still retains a PF_KTHREAD test because x86 unlikely everything else handles kthreads slightly differently than user space tasks that start with a function. The functions that created tasks that start with a function have been updated to set ".fn" and ".fn_arg" instead of ".stack" and ".stack_size". These functions are fork_idle(), create_io_thread(), kernel_thread(), and user_mode_thread(). Link: https://lkml.kernel.org/r/20220506141512.516114-4-ebiederm@xmission.com Signed-off-by: "Eric W. For architectures without CONFIG_SET_FS(), this should be the fastest check, as it comes down to a single comparison of a pointer against a compile-time constant, while the architecture specific versions tend to do something more complex for historic reasons or get something wrong. Type checking for __user annotations is handled inconsistently across architectures, but this is easily simplified as well by using an inline function that takes a 'const void __user *' argument. A handful of callers need an extra __user annotation for this. Some architectures had trick to use 33-bit or 65-bit arithmetic on the addresses to calculate the overflow, however this simpler version uses fewer registers, which means it can produce better object code in the end despite needing a second (statically predicted) branch. On some architectures, access_ok() does not do any argument type checking, so replacing the definition with a generic one causes a few warnings for harmless issues that were never caught before. 2022-01-15arch: remove GENERIC_FIND_FIRST_BIT entirelyYury Norov1-1/+0
In 5.12 cycle we enabled GENERIC_FIND_FIRST_BIT config option for ARM64 and MIPS. It increased performance and shrunk .text size; and so far I didn't receive any negative feedback on the change. https://lore.kernel.org/linux-arch/20210225135700.1381396-1-yury.norov@gmail.com/ Now I think it's a good time to switch all architectures to use find_{first,last}_bit() unconditionally, and so remove corresponding config option. The patch does't introduce functioal changes for arc, arm, arm64, mips, m68k, s390 and x86, for other architectures I expect improvement both in performance and .text size. 2022-01-08kbuild: do not quote string values in include/config/auto.confMasahiro Yamada2-4/+4
The previous commit fixed up all shell scripts to not include include/config/auto.conf. Now that include/config/auto.conf is only included by Makefiles, we can change it into a more Make-friendly form. Previously, Kconfig output string values enclosed with double-quotes (both in the .config and include/config/auto.conf): CONFIG_X="foo bar" Unlike shell, Make handles double-quotes (and single-quotes as well) verbatim. We must rip them off when used. There are some patterns: [1] $(patsubst "%",%,$(CONFIG_X)) [2] $(CONFIG_X:"%"=%) [3] $(subst ",,$(CONFIG_X)) [4] $(shell echo $(CONFIG_X)) These are not only ugly, but also fragile. [1] and [2] do not work if the value contains spaces, like CONFIG_X=" foo bar " [3] does not work correctly if the value contains double-quotes like CONFIG_X="foo\"bar" [4] seems to work better, but has a cost of forking a process. Anyway, quoted strings were always PITA for our Makefiles. This commit changes Kconfig to stop quoting in include/config/auto.conf. These are the string type symbols referenced in Makefiles or scripts: ACPI_CUSTOM_DSDT_FILE ARC_BUILTIN_DTB_NAME ARC_TUNE_MCPU BUILTIN_DTB_SOURCE CC_IMPLICIT_FALLTHROUGH CC_VERSION_TEXT CFG80211_EXTRA_REGDB_KEYDIR EXTRA_FIRMWARE EXTRA_FIRMWARE_DIR EXTRA_TARGETS H8300_BUILTIN_DTB INITRAMFS_SOURCE LOCALVERSION MODULE_SIG_HASH MODULE_SIG_KEY NDS32_BUILTIN_DTB NIOS2_DTB_SOURCE OPENRISC_BUILTIN_DTB SOC_CANAAN_K210_DTB_SOURCE SYSTEM_BLACKLIST_HASH_LIST SYSTEM_REVOCATION_KEYS SYSTEM_TRUSTED_KEYS TARGET_CPU UNUSED_KSYMS_WHITELIST XILINX_MICROBLAZE0_FAMILY XILINX_MICROBLAZE0_HW_VER XTENSA_VARIANT_NAME I checked them one by one, and fixed up the code where necessary. 2021-12-28arc: perf: Move static structs to where they're really usedAlexey Brodkin2-162/+162
It is all well described by Stephen Rothwell who initially spotted that: ----------------------------->8---------------------------- After merging the origin tree, today's linux-next build (arc haps_hs_smp_defconfig+kselftest) produced these warnings: arch/arc/include/asm/perf_event.h:126:27: warning: 'arc_pmu_cache_map' defined but not used [-Wunused-const-variable=] arch/arc/include/asm/perf_event.h:91:27: warning: 'arc_pmu_ev_hw_map' defined but not used [-Wunused-const-variable=] Introduced by commit 0dd450fe13da ("ARC: Add perf support for ARC700 cores") The 2 static arrays should be moved into arch/arc/kernel/perf_event.c (the only place that uses them). We get the warning because perf_event.h is also included by arch/arc/kernel/unaligned.c. ----------------------------->8---------------------------- Could be easily reproduced by running make with "W=1" on any up-to-date sources, when extra warnings get enabled (in particular "-Wunused-const-variable"), otherwise disabled by default in the top-level Makefile as "These warnings generated too much noise in a regular build".
