It's always 0. Note that we theoretically could use ~0U as well - result will be the same modulo 0xffff, _if_ the damn thing did the right thing for any value of initial sum; later we'll make use of that when convenient. quite a few architectures have the same csum_partial_copy_nocheck() - simply memcpy() the data and then return the csum of the copy. hexagon, parisc, ia64, s390, um: explicitly spelled out that way. arc, arm64, csky, h8300, m68k/nommu, microblaze, mips/GENERIC_CSUM, nds32, nios2, openrisc, riscv, unicore32: end up picking the same thing spelled out in lib/checksum.h (with varying amounts of perversions along the way). everybody else (alpha, arm, c6x, m68k/mmu, mips/!GENERIC_CSUM, powerpc, sh, sparc, x86, xtensa) have non-generic variants. For all except c6x the declaration is in their asm/checksum.h. c6x uses the wrapper from asm-generic/checksum.h that would normally lead to the lib/checksum.h instance, but in case of c6x we end up using an asm function from arch/c6x instead. Screw that mess - have architectures with private instances define _HAVE_ARCH_CSUM_AND_COPY in their asm/checksum.h and have the default one right in net/checksum.h conditional on _HAVE_ARCH_CSUM_AND_COPY *not* defined. It seems there is nothing really stopping all of them to take pointer to const. This patch (of 4): The ioreadX() and ioreadX_rep() helpers have inconsistent interface. On some architectures void *__iomem address argument is a pointer to const, on some not. Implementations of ioreadX() do not modify the memory under the address so they can be converted to a "const" version for const-safety and consistency among architectures. 2020-08-12alpha: fix annotation of io{read,write}{16,32}be()Luc Van Oostenryck1-4/+4
These accessors must be used to read/write a big-endian bus. The value returned or written is native-endian. However, these accessors are defined using be{16,32}_to_cpu() or cpu_to_be{16,32}() to make the endian conversion but these expect a __be{16,32} when none is present. Keeping them would need a force cast that would solve nothing at all. So, do the conversion using swab{16,32}, like done in asm-generic for similar situations. 2020-08-07asm-generic: pgalloc: provide generic pmd_alloc_one() and pmd_free_one()Mike Rapoport1-14/+1
For most architectures that support >2 levels of page tables, pmd_alloc_one() is a wrapper for __get_free_pages(), sometimes with __GFP_ZERO and sometimes followed by memset(0) instead. More elaborate versions on arm64 and x86 account memory for the user page tables and call to pgtable_pmd_page_ctor() as the part of PMD page initialization. Move the arm64 version to include/asm-generic/pgalloc.h and use the generic version on several architectures. The pgtable_pmd_page_ctor() is a NOP when ARCH_ENABLE_SPLIT_PMD_PTLOCK is not enabled, so there is no functional change for most architectures except of the addition of __GFP_ACCOUNT for allocation of user page tables. The pmd_free() is a wrapper for free_page() in all the cases, so no functional change here. 2020-08-07mm: remove unneeded includes of <asm/pgalloc.h>Mike Rapoport1-1/+0
Patch series "mm: cleanup usage of <asm/pgalloc.h>" Most architectures have very similar versions of pXd_alloc_one() and pXd_free_one() for intermediate levels of page table. These patches add generic versions of these functions in <asm-generic/pgalloc.h> and enable use of the generic functions where appropriate. In addition, functions declared and defined in <asm/pgalloc.h> headers are used mostly by core mm and early mm initialization in arch and there is no actual reason to have the <asm/pgalloc.h> included all over the place. The first patch in this series removes unneeded includes of <asm/pgalloc.h> In the end it didn't work out as neatly as I hoped and moving pXd_alloc_track() definitions to <asm-generic/pgalloc.h> would require unnecessary changes to arches that have custom page table allocations, so I've decided to move lib/ioremap.c to mm/ and make pgalloc-track.h local to mm/. This patch (of 8): In most cases <asm/pgalloc.h> header is required only for allocations of page table memory. Most of the .c files that include that header do not use symbols declared in <asm/pgalloc.h> and do not require that header. As for the other header files that used to include <asm/pgalloc.h>, it is possible to move that include into the .c file that actually uses symbols from <asm/pgalloc.h> and drop the include from the header file. The process was somewhat automated using sed -i -E '/[<"]asm\/pgalloc\.h/d' \ $(grep -L -w -f /tmp/xx \ $(git grep -E -l '[<"]asm/pgalloc\.h')) where /tmp/xx contains all the symbols defined in arch/*/include/asm/pgalloc.h. 2020-06-12alpha: fix memory barriers so that they conform to the specificationMikulas Patocka1-15/+59
The commits cd0e00c10672 and 92d7223a7423 broke boot on the Alpha Avanti platform. The patches move memory barriers after a write before the write. The result is that if there's iowrite followed by ioread, there is no barrier between them. The Alpha architecture allows reordering of the accesses to the I/O space, and the missing barrier between write and read causes hang with serial port and real time clock. This patch makes barriers confiorm to the specification. 1. We add mb() before readX_relaxed and writeX_relaxed - memory-barriers.txt claims that these functions must be ordered w.r.t. each other. Alpha doesn't order them, so we need an explicit barrier. 2. We add mb() before reads from the I/O space - so that if there's a write followed by a read, there should be a barrier between them. 2020-06-09mm: consolidate pte_index() and pte_offset_*() definitionsMike Rapoport1-12/+2
All architectures define pte_index() as (address >> PAGE_SHIFT) & (PTRS_PER_PTE - 1) and all architectures define pte_offset_kernel() as an entry in the array of PTEs indexed by the pte_index(). For the most architectures the pte_offset_kernel() implementation relies on the availability of pmd_page_vaddr() that converts a PMD entry value to the virtual address of the page containing PTEs array. Let's move x86 definitions of the PTE accessors to the generic place in <linux/pgtable.h> and then simply drop the respective definitions from the other architectures. The architectures that didn't provide pmd_page_vaddr() are updated to have that defined. The generic implementation of pte_offset_kernel() can be overridden by an architecture and alpha makes use of this because it has special ordering requirements for its version of pte_offset_kernel(). Patch series "mm: consolidate definitions of page table accessors", v2. The low level page table accessors (pXY_index(), pXY_offset()) are duplicated across all architectures and sometimes more than once. For instance, we have 31 definition of pgd_offset() for 25 supported architectures. 2020-05-12floppy: split the base port from the register in I/O accessesWilly Tarreau1-2/+2
Currently we have architecture-specific fd_inb() and fd_outb() functions or macros, taking just a port which is in fact made of a base address and a register. The base address is FDC-specific and derived from the local or global "fdc" variable through the FD_IOPORT macro used in the base address calculation. This change splits this by explicitly passing the FDC's base address and the register separately to fd_outb() and fd_inb(). It affects the following archs: - x86, alpha, mips, powerpc, parisc, arm, m68k: simple remap of port -> base+reg - sparc32: use of reg only, since the base address was already masked out and the FDC controller is known from a static struct. - sparc64: like x86 for PCI, like sparc32 for 82077 Some archs use inline functions and others macros. This was not unified in order to minimize the number of changes to review. For the same reason checkpatch still spews a few warnings about things that were already there before. The parisc still uses hard-coded register values and could be cleaned up by taking the register definitions. The sparc per-controller inb/outb functions could further be refined to explicitly take an FDC register instead of a port in argument but it was not needed yet and may be cleaned later. Currently there are many platforms that dont enable ARCH_HAS_PTE_SPECIAL but required to define quite similar fallback stubs for special page table entry helpers such as pte_special() and pte_mkspecial(), as they get build in generic MM without a config check. This creates two generic fallback stub definitions for these helpers, eliminating much code duplication. mips platform has a special case where pte_special() and pte_mkspecial() visibility is wider than what ARCH_HAS_PTE_SPECIAL enablement requires. This restricts those symbol visibility in order to avoid redefinitions which is now exposed through this new generic stubs and subsequent build failure. arm platform set_pte_at() definition needs to be moved into a C file just to prevent a build failure. These patches convert several architectures to use page table folding and remove __ARCH_HAS_4LEVEL_HACK along with include/asm-generic/4level-fixup.h. For the nommu configurations the folding is already implemented by the generic code so the only change was to use the appropriate header file. As for the rest, the changes are mostly about mechanical replacement of pgd accessors with pud/pmd ones and the addition of higher levels to page table traversals. With Vineet's patches from "elide extraneous generated code for folded p4d/pud/pmd" series [1] there is a small shrink of the kernel size of about -0.01% for the defconfig builds. Both pgtable_cache_init() and pgd_cache_init() are used to initialize kmem cache for page table allocations on several architectures that do not use PAGE_SIZE tables for one or more levels of the page table hierarchy. Most architectures do not implement these functions and use __weak default NOP implementation of pgd_cache_init(). Since there is no such default for pgtable_cache_init(), its empty stub is duplicated among most architectures. Rename the definitions of pgd_cache_init() to pgtable_cache_init() and drop empty stubs of pgtable_cache_init(). These have been around for a long time, but have not got much traction in the last decade and are only used on ia64 and sh architectures. If anybody wants to resurrect this it's in the git history, but it's unhelpful to have this code and divergent allocator behaviour for minor archs. Also it might be better to instead make more general improvements to page allocator if this is still so slow. alpha allocates PTE pages with __get_free_page() and uses GFP_KERNEL | __GFP_ZERO for the allocations. Switch it to the generic version that does exactly the same thing for the kernel page tables and adds __GFP_ACCOUNT for the user PTEs. As a step towards making the atomic64 API use consistent types treewide, let's have the alpha atomic64 implementation use s64 as the underlying type for atomic64_t, rather than long, matching the generated headers. As atomic64_read() depends on the generic defintion of atomic64_t, this still returns long. This will be converted in a subsequent patch. Otherwise, there should be no functional change as a result of this patch. As the generic rwsem-xadd code is using the appropriate acquire and release versions of the atomic operations, the arch specific rwsem.h files will not be that much faster than the generic code as long as the atomic functions are properly implemented. So we can remove those arch specific rwsem.h and stop building asm/rwsem.h to reduce maintenance effort. Currently, only x86, alpha and ia64 have implemented architecture specific fast paths. I don't have access to alpha and ia64 systems for testing, but they are legacy systems that are not likely to be updated to the latest kernel anyway. For x86-64, using the generic C code fast path seems to be a little bit faster than the assembly version with low lock contention. Looking at the assembly version of the fast paths, there are assembly to/from C code wrappers that save and restore all the callee-clobbered registers (7 registers on x86-64). The assembly generated from the generic C code doesn't need to do that. That may explain the slight performance gain here. The generic asm rwsem.h can also be merged into kernel/locking/rwsem.h with no code change as no other code other than those under kernel/locking needs to access the internal rwsem macros and functions. For the architectures that do not implement their own tlb_flush() but do already use the generic mmu_gather, there are two options: 1) the platform has an efficient flush_tlb_range() and asm-generic/tlb.h doesn't need any overrides at all. 2) the platform lacks an efficient flush_tlb_range() and we select MMU_GATHER_NO_RANGE to minimize full invalidates. Convert all 'simple' architectures to one of these two forms. alpha: has no range invalidate -> 2 arc: already used flush_tlb_range() -> 1 c6x: has no range invalidate -> 2 hexagon: has an efficient flush_tlb_range() -> 1 (flush_tlb_mm() is in fact a full range invalidate, so no need to shoot down everything) m68k: has inefficient flush_tlb_range() -> 2 microblaze: has no flush_tlb_range() -> 2 mips: has efficient flush_tlb_range() -> 1 (even though it currently seems to use flush_tlb_mm()) nds32: already uses flush_tlb_range() -> 1 nios2: has inefficient flush_tlb_range() -> 2 (no limit on range iteration) openrisc: has inefficient flush_tlb_range() -> 2 (no limit on range iteration) parisc: already uses flush_tlb_range() -> 1 sparc32: already uses flush_tlb_range() -> 1 unicore32: has inefficient flush_tlb_range() -> 2 (no limit on range iteration) xtensa: has efficient flush_tlb_range() -> 1 Note this also fixes a bug in the existing code for a number platforms. Those platforms that did: tlb_end_vma() -> if (!full_mm) flush_tlb_*() tlb_flush -> if (full_mm) flush_tlb_mm() missed the case of shift_arg_pages(), which doesn't have @fullmm set, nor calls into tlb_*vma(), but still frees page-tables and thus needs an invalidate. The new code handles this by detecting a non-empty range, and either issuing the matching range invalidate or a full invalidate, depending on the capabilities. No change in behavior intended. I do not see any consistency about headers_install of <linux/kvm_para.h> and <asm/kvm_para.h>. According to my analysis of Linux 5.1-rc1, there are 3 groups: [1] Both <linux/kvm_para.h> and <asm/kvm_para.h> are exported alpha, arm, hexagon, mips, powerpc, s390, sparc, x86 [2] <asm/kvm_para.h> is exported, but <linux/kvm_para.h> is not arc, arm64, c6x, h8300, ia64, m68k, microblaze, nios2, openrisc, parisc, sh, unicore32, xtensa [3] Neither <linux/kvm_para.h> nor <asm/kvm_para.h> is exported csky, nds32, riscv This does not match to the actual KVM support. At least, [2] is half-baked. Nor do arch maintainers look like they care about this. For example, commit 0add53713b1c ("microblaze: Add missing kvm_para.h to Kbuild") exported <asm/kvm_para.h> to user-space in order to fix an in-kernel build error. We have two ways to make this consistent: [A] export both <linux/kvm_para.h> and <asm/kvm_para.h> for all architectures, irrespective of the KVM support [B] Match the header export of <linux/kvm_para.h> and <asm/kvm_para.h> to the KVM support My first attempt was [A] because the code looks cleaner, but Paolo suggested [B]. So, this commit goes with [B]. For most architectures, <asm/kvm_para.h> was moved to the kernel-space. I changed include/uapi/linux/Kbuild so that it checks generated asm/kvm_para.h as well as check-in ones. This argument is required to extend the generic ptrace API with PTRACE_GET_SYSCALL_INFO request: syscall_get_arch() is going to be called from ptrace_request() along with syscall_get_nr(), syscall_get_arguments(), syscall_get_error(), and syscall_get_return_value() functions with a tracee as their argument. The primary intent is that the triple (audit_arch, syscall_nr, arg1..arg6) should describe what system call is being called and what its arguments are.
