2020-04-07mm/zswap: allow setting default status, compressor and allocator in KconfigMaciej S. Szmigiero1-8/+12
The compressed cache for swap pages (zswap) currently needs from 1 to 3 extra kernel command line parameters in order to make it work: it has to be enabled by adding a "zswap.enabled=1" command line parameter and if one wants a different compressor or pool allocator than the default lzo / zbud combination then these choices also need to be specified on the kernel command line in additional parameters. Using a different compressor and allocator for zswap is actually pretty common as guides often recommend using the lz4 / z3fold pair instead of the default one. In such case it is also necessary to remember to enable the appropriate compression algorithm and pool allocator in the kernel config manually. Let's avoid the need for adding these kernel command line parameters and automatically pull in the dependencies for the selected compressor algorithm and pool allocator by adding an appropriate default switches to Kconfig. The default values for these options match what the code was using previously as its defaults. Signed-off-by: Maciej S. 2020-03-27mm/hmm: remove HMM_FAULT_SNAPSHOTJason Gunthorpe1-7/+5
Now that flags are handled on a fine-grained per-page basis this global flag is redundant and has a confusing overlap with the pfn_flags_mask and default_flags. Normalize the HMM_FAULT_SNAPSHOT behavior into one place. Callers needing the SNAPSHOT behavior should set a pfn_flags_mask and default_flags that always results in a cleared HMM_PFN_VALID. Then no pages will be faulted, and HMM_FAULT_SNAPSHOT is not a special flow that overrides the masking mechanism. As this is the last flag, also remove the flags argument. If future flags are needed they can be part of the struct hmm_range function arguments. 2020-01-31mm/zswap.c: add allocation hysteresis if pool limit is hitVitaly Wool1-0/+13
zswap will always try to shrink pool when zswap is full. If there is a high pressure on zswap it will result in flipping pages in and out zswap pool without any real benefit, and the overall system performance will drop. The previous discussion on this subject [1] ended up with a suggestion to implement a sort of hysteresis to refuse taking pages into zswap pool until it has sufficient space if the limit has been hit. This is my take on this. Hysteresis is controlled with a sysfs-configurable parameter (namely, /sys/kernel/debug/zswap/accept_threhsold_percent). It specifies the threshold at which zswap would start accepting pages again after it became full. Setting this parameter to 100 disables the hysteresis and sets the zswap behavior to pre-hysteresis state. 2019-09-26mm: treewide: clarify pgtable_page_{ctor,dtor}() namingMark Rutland1-5/+5
The naming of pgtable_page_{ctor,dtor}() seems to have confused a few people, and until recently arm64 used these erroneously/pointlessly for other levels of page table. To make it incredibly clear that these only apply to the PTE level, and to align with the naming of pgtable_pmd_page_{ctor,dtor}(), let's rename them to pgtable_pte_page_{ctor,dtor}(). These changes were generated with the following shell script: ---- git grep -lw 'pgtable_page_.tor' | while read FILE; do sed -i '{s/pgtable_page_ctor/pgtable_pte_page_ctor/}' $FILE; sed -i '{s/pgtable_page_dtor/pgtable_pte_page_dtor/}' $FILE; done ---- ... with the documentation re-flowed to remain under 80 columns, and whitespace fixed up in macros to keep backslashes aligned. There should be no functional change as a result of this patch. 2019-08-20mm: turn migrate_vma upside downChristoph Hellwig1-52/+2
There isn't any good reason to pass callbacks to migrate_vma. Instead we can just export the three steps done by this function to drivers and let them sequence the operation without callbacks. This removes a lot of boilerplate code as-is, and will allow the drivers to drastically improve code flow and error handling further on. 2019-05-14mm/hmm: add default fault flags to avoid the need to pre-fill pfns arraysJérôme Glisse1-0/+35
The HMM mirror API can be use in two fashions. The first one where the HMM user coalesce multiple page faults into one request and set flags per pfns for of those faults. The second one where the HMM user want to pre-fault a range with specific flags. For the latter one it is a waste to have the user pre-fill the pfn arrays with a default flags value. This patch adds a default flags value allowing user to set them for a range without having to pre-fill the pfn array. 2019-05-14mm/hmm: improve driver API to work and wait over a rangeJérôme Glisse1-4/+21
A common use case for HMM mirror is user trying to mirror a range and before they could program the hardware it get invalidated by some core mm event. Instead of having user re-try right away to mirror the range provide a completion mechanism for them to wait for any active invalidation affecting the range. This also changes how hmm_range_snapshot() and hmm_range_fault() works by not relying on vma so that we can drop the mmap_sem when waiting and lookup the vma again on retry. 2018-11-07mm, drm/i915: mark pinned shmemfs pages as unevictableKuo-Hsin Yang1-1/+5
The i915 driver uses shmemfs to allocate backing storage for gem objects. These shmemfs pages can be pinned (increased ref count) by shmem_read_mapping_page_gfp(). When a lot of pages are pinned, vmscan wastes a lot of time scanning these pinned pages. In some extreme case, all pages in the inactive anon lru are pinned, and only the inactive anon lru is scanned due to inactive_ratio, the system cannot swap and invokes the oom-killer. Mark these pinned pages as unevictable to speed up vmscan. Export pagevec API check_move_unevictable_pages(). This patch was inspired by Chris Wilson's change [1]. 2018-09-09Drop all 00-INDEX files from Documentation/Henrik Austad1-50/+0
This is a respin with a wider audience (all that get_maintainer returned) and I know this spams a *lot* of people. Not sure what would be the correct way, so my apologies for ruining your inbox. The 00-INDEX files are supposed to give a summary of all files present in a directory, but these files are horribly out of date and their usefulness is brought into question. Often a simple "ls" would reveal the same information as the filenames are generally quite descriptive as a short introduction to what the file covers (it should not surprise anyone what Documentation/sched/sched-design-CFS.txt covers) A few years back it was mentioned that these files were no longer really needed, and they have since then grown further out of date, so perhaps it is time to just throw them out. A short status yields the following _outdated_ 00-INDEX files, first counter is files listed in 00-INDEX but missing in the directory, last is files present but not listed in 00-INDEX. List of outdated 00-INDEX: Documentation: (4/10) Documentation/sysctl: (0/1) Documentation/timers: (1/0) Documentation/blockdev: (3/1) Documentation/w1/slaves: (0/1) Documentation/locking: (0/1) Documentation/devicetree: (0/5) Documentation/power: (1/1) Documentation/powerpc: (0/5) Documentation/arm: (1/0) Documentation/x86: (0/9) Documentation/x86/x86_64: (1/1) Documentation/scsi: (4/4) Documentation/filesystems: (2/9) Documentation/filesystems/nfs: (0/2) Documentation/cgroup-v1: (0/2) Documentation/kbuild: (0/4) Documentation/spi: (1/0) Documentation/virtual/kvm: (1/0) Documentation/scheduler: (0/2) Documentation/fb: (0/1) Documentation/block: (0/1) Documentation/networking: (6/37) Documentation/vm: (1/3) Then there are 364 subdirectories in Documentation/ with several files that are missing 00-INDEX alltogether (and another 120 with a single file and no 00-INDEX). I don't really have an opinion to whether or not we /should/ have 00-INDEX, but the above 00-INDEX should either be removed or be kept up to date. If we should keep the files, I can try to keep them updated, but I rather not if we just want to delete them anyway. As a starting point, remove all index-files and references to 00-INDEX and see where the discussion is going. Signed-off-by: Henrik Austad <henrik@austad.us> Acked-by: "Paul E.
