+Amlogic Meson Display Controller
+================================
+
+The Amlogic Meson Display controller is composed of several components
+that are going to be documented below:
+
+DMC|---------------VPU (Video Processing Unit)----------------|------HHI------|
+ | vd1 _______ _____________ _________________
+D |-------| |----| | | | | HDMI PLL |
+D | vd2 | VIU | | Video Post | | Video Encoders |<---|-----VCLK |
+R |-------| |----| Processing
+ | osd2 | | | |---| Enci ----------|----|-----VDAC------|
+R |-------| CSC |----| Scalers | | Encp ----------|----|----HDMI-TX----|
+A | osd1 | | | Blenders | | Encl ----------|----|---------------|
+M |-------|______|----|____________| |________________
+___|__________________________________________________________|_______________|
+
+
+VIU: Video Input Unit
+---------------------
+
+The Video Input Unit is in charge of the pixel scanout from the DDR memory.
+It fetches the frames addresses, stride and parameters from the "Canvas" memory.
+This part is also in charge of the CSC (Colorspace Conversion).
+It can handle 2 OSD Planes and 2 Video Planes.
+
+VPP: Video Post Processing
+--------------------------
+
+The Video Post Processing is in charge of the scaling and blending of the
+various planes into a single pixel stream.
+There is a special "pre-blending" used by the video planes with a dedicated
+scaler and a "post-blending" to merge with the OSD Planes.
+The OSD planes also have a dedicated scaler for one of the OSD.
+
+VENC: Video Encoders
+--------------------
+
+The VENC is composed of the multiple pixel encoders :
+ - ENCI : Interlace Video encoder for CVBS and Interlace HDMI
+ - ENCP : Progressive Video Encoder for HDMI
+ - ENCL : LCD LVDS Encoder
+The VENC Unit gets a Pixel Clocks (VCLK) from a dedicated HDMI PLL and clock
+tree and provides the scanout clock to the VPP and VIU.
+The ENCI is connected to a single VDAC for Composite Output.
+The ENCI and ENCP are connected to an on-chip HDMI Transceiver.

Dumb Buffer Objects
===================
-The KMS API doesn't standardize backing storage object creation and
-leaves it to driver-specific ioctls. Furthermore actually creating a
-buffer object even for GEM-based drivers is done through a
-driver-specific ioctl - GEM only has a common userspace interface for
-sharing and destroying objects. While not an issue for full-fledged
-graphics stacks that include device-specific userspace components (in
-libdrm for instance), this limit makes DRM-based early boot graphics
-unnecessarily complex.
-
-Dumb objects partly alleviate the problem by providing a standard API to
-create dumb buffers suitable for scanout, which can then be used to
-create KMS frame buffers.
-
-To support dumb objects drivers must implement the dumb_create,
-dumb_destroy and dumb_map_offset operations.
-
-- int (\*dumb_create)(struct drm_file \*file_priv, struct
- drm_device \*dev, struct drm_mode_create_dumb \*args);
- The dumb_create operation creates a driver object (GEM or TTM
- handle) suitable for scanout based on the width, height and depth
- from the struct :c:type:`struct drm_mode_create_dumb
- <drm_mode_create_dumb>` argument. It fills the argument's
- handle, pitch and size fields with a handle for the newly created
- object and its line pitch and size in bytes.
-
-- int (\*dumb_destroy)(struct drm_file \*file_priv, struct
- drm_device \*dev, uint32_t handle);
- The dumb_destroy operation destroys a dumb object created by
- dumb_create.
-
-- int (\*dumb_map_offset)(struct drm_file \*file_priv, struct
- drm_device \*dev, uint32_t handle, uint64_t \*offset);
- The dumb_map_offset operation associates an mmap fake offset with
- the object given by the handle and returns it. Drivers must use the
- :c:func:`drm_gem_create_mmap_offset()` function to associate
- the fake offset as described in ?.
-
-Note that dumb objects may not be used for gpu acceleration, as has been
-attempted on some ARM embedded platforms. Such drivers really must have
-a hardware-specific ioctl to allocate suitable buffer objects.
