git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/crng/random Pull random number generator updates from Jason Donenfeld: - Replace prandom_u32_max() and various open-coded variants of it, there is now a new family of functions that uses fast rejection sampling to choose properly uniformly random numbers within an interval: get_random_u32_below(ceil) - [0, ceil) get_random_u32_above(floor) - (floor, U32_MAX] get_random_u32_inclusive(floor, ceil) - [floor, ceil] Coccinelle was used to convert all current users of prandom_u32_max(), as well as many open-coded patterns, resulting in improvements throughout the tree. I'll have a "late" 6.1-rc1 pull for you that removes the now unused prandom_u32_max() function, just in case any other trees add a new use case of it that needs to converted. According to linux-next, there may be two trivial cases of prandom_u32_max() reintroductions that are fixable with a 's/.../.../'. So I'll have for you a final conversion patch doing that alongside the removal patch during the second week. This is a treewide change that touches many files throughout. - More consistent use of get_random_canary(). - Updates to comments, documentation, tests, headers, and simplification in configuration. - The arch_get_random*_early() abstraction was only used by arm64 and wasn't entirely useful, so this has been replaced by code that works in all relevant contexts. - The kernel will use and manage random seeds in non-volatile EFI variables, refreshing a variable with a fresh seed when the RNG is initialized. The RNG GUID namespace is then hidden from efivarfs to prevent accidental leakage. These changes are split into random.c infrastructure code used in the EFI subsystem, in this pull request, and related support inside of EFISTUB, in Ard's EFI tree. These are co-dependent for full functionality, but the order of merging doesn't matter. - Part of the infrastructure added for the EFI support is also used for an improvement to the way vsprintf initializes its siphash key, replacing an sleep loop wart. - The hardware RNG framework now always calls its correct random.c input function, add_hwgenerator_randomness(), rather than sometimes going through helpers better suited for other cases. - The add_latent_entropy() function has long been called from the fork handler, but is a no-op when the latent entropy gcc plugin isn't used, which is fine for the purposes of latent entropy. But it was missing out on the cycle counter that was also being mixed in beside the latent entropy variable. So now, if the latent entropy gcc plugin isn't enabled, add_latent_entropy() will expand to a call to add_device_randomness(NULL, 0), which adds a cycle counter, without the absent latent entropy variable. - The RNG is now reseeded from a delayed worker, rather than on demand when used. Always running from a worker allows it to make use of the CPU RNG on platforms like S390x, whose instructions are too slow to do so from interrupts. It also has the effect of adding in new inputs more frequently with more regularity, amounting to a long term transcript of random values. Plus, it helps a bit with the upcoming vDSO implementation (which isn't yet ready for 6.2). - The jitter entropy algorithm now tries to execute on many different CPUs, round-robining, in hopes of hitting even more memory latencies and other unpredictable effects. It also will mix in a cycle counter when the entropy timer fires, in addition to being mixed in from the main loop, to account more explicitly for fluctuations in that timer firing. And the state it touches is now kept within the same cache line, so that it's assured that the different execution contexts will cause latencies. * tag 'random-6.2-rc1-for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/crng/random: (23 commits) random: include <linux/once.h> in the right header random: align entropy_timer_state to cache line random: mix in cycle counter when jitter timer fires random: spread out jitter callback to different CPUs random: remove extraneous period and add a missing one in comments efi: random: refresh non-volatile random seed when RNG is initialized vsprintf: initialize siphash key using notifier random: add back async readiness notifier random: reseed in delayed work rather than on-demand random: always mix cycle counter in add_latent_entropy() hw_random: use add_hwgenerator_randomness() for early entropy random: modernize documentation comment on get_random_bytes() random: adjust comment to account for removed function random: remove early archrandom abstraction random: use random.trust_{bootloader,cpu} command line option only stackprotector: actually use get_random_canary() stackprotector: move get_random_canary() into stackprotector.h treewide: use get_random_u32_inclusive() when possible treewide: use get_random_u32_{above,below}() instead of manual loop treewide: use get_random_u32_below() instead of deprecated function ...

2022-11-08mm: remove kern_addr_valid() completelyKefeng Wang3-9/+1
Most architectures (except arm64/x86/sparc) simply return 1 for kern_addr_valid(), which is only used in read_kcore(), and it calls copy_from_kernel_nofault() which could check whether the address is a valid kernel address. So as there is no need for kern_addr_valid(), let's remove it. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/crng/random Pull more random number generator updates from Jason Donenfeld: "This time with some large scale treewide cleanups. The intent of this pull is to clean up the way callers fetch random integers. The current rules for doing this right are: - If you want a secure or an insecure random u64, use get_random_u64() - If you want a secure or an insecure random u32, use get_random_u32() The old function prandom_u32() has been deprecated for a while now and is just a wrapper around get_random_u32(). Same for get_random_int(). - If you want a secure or an insecure random u16, use get_random_u16() - If you want a secure or an insecure random u8, use get_random_u8() - If you want secure or insecure random bytes, use get_random_bytes(). The old function prandom_bytes() has been deprecated for a while now and has long been a wrapper around get_random_bytes() - If you want a non-uniform random u32, u16, or u8 bounded by a certain open interval maximum, use prandom_u32_max() I say "non-uniform", because it doesn't do any rejection sampling or divisions. Hence, it stays within the prandom_*() namespace, not the get_random_*() namespace. I'm currently investigating a "uniform" function for 6.2. We'll see what comes of that. By applying these rules uniformly, we get several benefits: - By using prandom_u32_max() with an upper-bound that the compiler can prove at compile-time is ≤65536 or ≤256, internally get_random_u16() or get_random_u8() is used, which wastes fewer batched random bytes, and hence has higher throughput. - By using prandom_u32_max() instead of %, when the upper-bound is not a constant, division is still avoided, because prandom_u32_max() uses a faster multiplication-based trick instead. - By using get_random_u16() or get_random_u8() in cases where the return value is intended to indeed be a u16 or a u8, we waste fewer batched random bytes, and hence have higher throughput. This series was originally done by hand while I was on an airplane without Internet. Later, Kees and I worked on retroactively figuring out what could be done with Coccinelle and what had to be done manually, and then we split things up based on that. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/kees/linux Pull kernel hardening updates from Kees Cook: "Most of the collected changes here are fixes across the tree for various hardening features (details noted below). The most notable new feature here is the addition of the memcpy() overflow warning (under CONFIG_FORTIFY_SOURCE), which is the next step on the path to killing the common class of "trivially detectable" buffer overflow conditions (i.e. on arrays with sizes known at compile time) that have resulted in many exploitable vulnerabilities over the years (e.g. BleedingTooth). This feature is expected to still have some undiscovered false positives. It's been in -next for a full development cycle and all the reported false positives have been fixed in their respective trees. All the known-bad code patterns we could find with Coccinelle are also either fixed in their respective trees or in flight. The commit message in commit 54d9469bc515 ("fortify: Add run-time WARN for cross-field memcpy()") for the feature has extensive details, but I'll repeat here that this is a warning _only_, and is not intended to actually block overflows (yet). The many patches fixing array sizes and struct members have been landing for several years now, and we're finally able to turn this on to find any remaining stragglers. Summary: Various fixes across several hardening areas: - loadpin: Fix verity target enforcement (Matthias Kaehlcke). - zero-call-used-regs: Add missing clobbers in paravirt (Bill Wendling). - CFI: clean up sparc function pointer type mismatches (Bart Van Assche). - Clang: Adjust compiler flag detection for various Clang changes (Sami Tolvanen, Kees Cook). - fortify: Fix warnings in arch-specific code in sh, ARM, and xen. 2022-10-02kbuild: remove head-y syntaxMasahiro Yamada1-2/+0
Kbuild puts the objects listed in head-y at the head of vmlinux. Conventionally, we do this for head*.S, which contains the kernel entry point. A counter approach is to control the section order by the linker script. Actually, the code marked as __HEAD goes into the ".head.text" section, which is placed before the normal ".text" section. I do not know if both of them are needed. From the build system perspective, head-y is not mandatory. If you can achieve the proper code placement by the linker script only, it would be cleaner. I collected the current head-y objects into head-object-list.txt. It is a whitelist. My hope is it will be reduced in the long run. 2022-10-02kbuild: use obj-y instead extra-y for objects placed at the headMasahiro Yamada1-2/+1
The objects placed at the head of vmlinux need special treatments: - arch/$(SRCARCH)/Makefile adds them to head-y in order to place them before other archives in the linker command line. - arch/$(SRCARCH)/kernel/Makefile adds them to extra-y instead of obj-y to avoid them going into built-in.a. This commit gets rid of the latter. Create vmlinux.a to collect all the objects that are unconditionally linked to vmlinux. The objects listed in head-y are moved to the head of vmlinux.a by using 'ar m'. With this, arch/$(SRCARCH)/kernel/Makefile can consistently use obj-y for builtin objects. There is no *.o that is directly linked to vmlinux. Drop unneeded code in scripts/clang-tools/gen_compile_commands.py. $(AR) mPi needs 'T' to workaround the llvm-ar bug. The fix was suggested by Nathan Chancellor [1]. 2022-09-09termios: get rid of non-UAPI asm/termios.hAl Viro1-8/+0
All non-UAPI asm/termios.h consist of include of UAPI counterpart and, possibly, include of linux/uaccess.h The latter can't be simply removed, even though nothing in linux/termios.h doesn't depend upon it anymore - there are several places that rely upon that indirect chain of includes to pull linux/uaccess.h. So the include needs to be lifted out of there - we lift into tty_driver.h, serdev.h and places that pull asm/termios.h, but none of * linux/uaccess.h (obvious) * net/sock.h (pulls uaccess.h) * linux/{tty,tty_driver,serdev}.h (tty.h pulls tty_driver.h) That leaves us just with the include of UAPI asm/termios.h, which is what <asm/termios.h> will resolve to if we simply remove non-UAPI header. 2022-09-09termios: consolidate values for VDISCARD in INIT_C_CCAl Viro1-2/+2
On old systems it used to be ^O. Linux had never actually used the value, but INIT_C_CC (on i386) did initialize it to ^O; unfortunately, it had a typo in the comment claiming that to be ^U. Most of the architectures copied the (correct) definition along with mistaken comment. alpha, powerpc and sparc tried to make the definition match comment. However, util-linux still resets it to ^O on any architecture, ^O is the historical value, kernel ignores it anyway and finally, Linus said "Just change everybody to do the same, nobody cares about VDISCARD". 2022-09-08sparc: Fix the generic IO helpersLinus Walleij2-0/+24
This enables the Sparc to use <asm-generic/io.h> to fill in the missing (undefined) [read|write]sq I/O accessor functions. This is needed if Sparc[64] ever wants to uses CONFIG_REGMAP_MMIO which has been patches to use accelerated _noinc accessors such as readsq/writesq that Sparc64, while being a 64bit platform, as of now not yet provide. This comes with the requirement that everything the architecture already provides needs to be defined, rather than just being, say, static inline functions. Bite the bullet and just provide the definitions and make it work. Compile-tested on sparc32 and sparc64. 2022-09-05asm-generic: Conditionally enable do_softirq_own_stack() via Kconfig.Sebastian Andrzej Siewior1-1/+1
Remove the CONFIG_PREEMPT_RT symbol from the ifdef around do_softirq_own_stack() and move it to Kconfig instead. Enable softirq stacks based on SOFTIRQ_ON_OWN_STACK which depends on HAVE_SOFTIRQ_ON_OWN_STACK and its default value is set to !PREEMPT_RT. This ensures that softirq stacks are not used on PREEMPT_RT and avoids a 'select' statement on an option which has a 'depends' statement. This is useful to battery-powered systems such as ChromeOS and Android. In addition, a new RCU_NOCB_CPU_CB_BOOST kernel boot parameter prevents offloaded callbacks from interfering with real-time workloads and with energy-efficiency mechanisms - Polled grace-period updates, perhaps most notably making these APIs account for both normal and expedited grace periods - Tasks RCU updates, perhaps most notably reducing the CPU overhead of RCU tasks trace grace periods by more than a factor of two on a system with 15,000 tasks. The reduction is expected to increase with the number of tasks, so it seems reasonable to hypothesize that a system with 150,000 tasks might see a 20-fold reduction in CPU overhead - Torture-test updates - Updates that merge RCU's dyntick-idle tracking into context tracking, thus reducing the overhead of transitioning to kernel mode from either idle or nohz_full userspace execution for kernels that track context independently of RCU. 2022-07-29profile: setup_profiling_timer() is moslty not implementedBen Dooks2-11/+0
The setup_profiling_timer() is mostly un-implemented by many architectures. In many places it isn't guarded by CONFIG_PROFILE which is needed for it to be used. Make it a weak symbol in kernel/profile.c and remove the 'return -EINVAL' implementations from the kenrel. There are a couple of architectures which do return 0 from the setup_profiling_timer() function but they don't seem to do anything else with it. To keep the /proc compatibility for now, leave these for a future update or removal. On ARM, this fixes the following sparse warning: arch/arm/kernel/smp.c:793:5: warning: symbol 'setup_profiling_timer' was not declared. Should it be static? 2022-07-29sparc: Use generic pci_mmap_resource_range()Arnd Bergmann2-150/+5
The main feature of the sparc-specific implementation of pci_mmap_resource_range() is that it allows mapping the entire PCI I/O space for a PCI host bridge using the /proc/bus/pci interface on a bridge device. The generic implementation cannot do this, but it also appears that this got broken for sparc by commit 9eff02e2042f ("PCI: check mmap range of /proc/bus/pci files too"), which enforces that each address is part of a BAR for kernels after 2.6.28. Remove it all, assuming that the corresponding user space code has already been changed to access /dev/ioport instead a long time ago. Add pci_iobar_pfn() to make it possible to map I/O resources. This is adapted from the powerpc version. 2022-07-29PCI: Remove pci_mmap_page_range() wrapperArnd Bergmann1-4/+9
The ARCH_GENERIC_PCI_MMAP_RESOURCE symbol came up in a recent discussion, and I noticed that this was left behind by an unfinished cleanup from 2017. The only architecture that still relies on providing its own pci_mmap_page_range() helper instead of using the generic pci_mmap_resource_range() is sparc. Presumably the reasons for this have not changed, but at least this can be simplified by converting sparc to use the same interface as the others. The only difference between the two is the device-specific offset that gets added to or subtracted from vma->vm_pgoff. Change the only caller of pci_mmap_page_range() in common code to subtract this offset and call the modern interface, while adding it back in the sparc implementation to preserve the existing behavior. This removes the complexities of the dual interfaces from the common code, and keeps it all specific to the sparc architecture code. According to David Miller, the sparc code lets user space poke into the VGA I/O port registers by mmapping the I/O space of the parent bridge device, which is something that the generic pci_mmap_resource_range() code apparently does not. 2022-07-22PCI: Move isa_dma_bridge_buggy out of asm/dma.hStafford Horne1-8/+0
The isa_dma_bridge_buggy symbol is only used for x86_32, and only x86_32 platforms or quirks ever set it. Add a new linux/isa-dma.h header that #defines isa_dma_bridge_buggy to 0 except on x86_32, where we keep it as a variable, and remove all the arch- specific definitions.
