2019-12-18hfs/hfsplus: use 64-bit inode timestampsArnd Bergmann1-6/+22
The interpretation of on-disk timestamps in HFS and HFS+ differs between 32-bit and 64-bit kernels at the moment. Use 64-bit timestamps consistently so apply the current 64-bit behavior everyhere. According to the official documentation for HFS+ [1], inode timestamps are supposed to cover the time range from 1904 to 2040 as originally used in classic MacOS. The traditional Linux usage is to convert the timestamps into an unsigned 32-bit number based on the Unix epoch and from there to a time_t. On 32-bit systems, that wraps the time from 2038 to 1902, so the last two years of the valid time range become garbled. On 64-bit systems, all times before 1970 get turned into timestamps between 2038 and 2106, which is more convenient but also different from the documented behavior. Looking at the Darwin sources [2], it seems that MacOS is inconsistent in yet another way: all timestamps are wrapped around to a 32-bit unsigned number when written to the disk, but when read back, all numeric values lower than 2082844800U are assumed to be invalid, so we cannot represent the times before 1970 or the times after 2040. smack ->d_instantiate() uses ->setxattr(), so to be able to call it before we'd hashed the new dentry and attached it to inode, we need ->setxattr() instances getting the inode as an explicit argument rather than obtaining it from dentry. Similar change for ->getxattr() had been done in commit ce23e64. Unlike ->getxattr() (which is used by both selinux and smack instances of ->d_instantiate()) ->setxattr() is used only by smack one and unfortunately it got missed back then. Instances either don't look at it at all (the majority of cases) or only want it to find the superblock (which can be had as dentry->d_sb). A few cases that want more are actually safe with dentry->d_inode - the only precaution needed is the check that it hadn't been replaced with NULL by rmdir() or by overwriting rename(), which case should be simply treated as cache miss. hfs_find_init() may fail with ENOMEM, but there are places, where the returned value is not checked. The consequences can be very unpleasant, e.g. kfree uninitialized pointer and inappropriate mutex unlocking. The patch adds checks for errors in hfs_find_init(). 2012-07-22hfs: get rid of hfs_sync_superArtem Bityutskiy1-1/+8
This patch makes hfs stop using the VFS '->write_super()' method along with the 's_dirt' superblock flag, because they are on their way out. The whole "superblock write-out" VFS infrastructure is served by the 'sync_supers()' kernel thread, which wakes up every 5 (by default) seconds and writes out all dirty superblocks using the '->write_super()' call-back. But the problem with this thread is that it wastes power by waking up the system every 5 seconds, even if there are no diry superblocks, or there are no client file-systems which would need this (e.g., btrfs does not use '->write_super()'). So we want to kill it completely and thus, we need to make file-systems to stop using the '->write_super()' VFS service, and then remove it together with the kernel thread. Change d_compare so it may be called from lock-free RCU lookups. This does put significant restrictions on what may be done from the callback, however there don't seem to have been any problems with in-tree fses. If some strange use case pops up that _really_ cannot cope with the rcu-walk rules, we can just add new rcu-unaware callbacks, which would cause name lookup to drop out of rcu-walk mode. This patch removes almost all inclusions of linux/version.h. The 3 #defines are unused in most of the touched files. Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
