2016-10-19Merge branch 'gup_flag-cleanups'Linus Torvalds1-2/+3
Merge the gup_flags cleanups from Lorenzo Stoakes: "This patch series adjusts functions in the get_user_pages* family such that desired FOLL_* flags are passed as an argument rather than implied by flags. The purpose of this change is to make the use of FOLL_FORCE explicit so it is easier to grep for and clearer to callers that this flag is being used. The use of FOLL_FORCE is an issue as it overrides missing VM_READ/VM_WRITE flags for the VMA whose pages we are reading from/writing to, which can result in surprising behaviour. The patch series came out of the discussion around commit 38e088546522 ("mm: check VMA flags to avoid invalid PROT_NONE NUMA balancing"), which addressed a BUG_ON() being triggered when a page was faulted in with PROT_NONE set but having been overridden by FOLL_FORCE. do_numa_page() was run on the assumption the page _must_ be one marked for NUMA node migration as an actual PROT_NONE page would have been dealt with prior to this code path, however FOLL_FORCE introduced a situation where this assumption did not hold. See https://marc.info/?l=linux-mm&m=147585445805166 for the patch proposal" Additionally, there's a fix for an ancient bug related to FOLL_FORCE and FOLL_WRITE by me. [ This branch was rebased recently to add a few more acked-by's and reviewed-by's ] * gup_flag-cleanups: mm: replace access_process_vm() write parameter with gup_flags mm: replace access_remote_vm() write parameter with gup_flags mm: replace __access_remote_vm() write parameter with gup_flags mm: replace get_user_pages_remote() write/force parameters with gup_flags mm: replace get_user_pages() write/force parameters with gup_flags mm: replace get_vaddr_frames() write/force parameters with gup_flags mm: replace get_user_pages_locked() write/force parameters with gup_flags mm: replace get_user_pages_unlocked() write/force parameters with gup_flags mm: remove write/force parameters from __get_user_pages_unlocked() mm: remove write/force parameters from __get_user_pages_locked() mm: remove gup_flags FOLL_WRITE games from __get_user_pages()
2016-10-19mm: replace access_process_vm() write parameter with gup_flagsLorenzo Stoakes1-2/+3
This removes the 'write' argument from access_process_vm() and replaces it with 'gup_flags' as use of this function previously silently implied FOLL_FORCE, whereas after this patch callers explicitly pass this flag. We make this explicit as use of FOLL_FORCE can result in surprising behaviour (and hence bugs) within the mm subsystem. 2016-10-07nmi_backtrace: generate one-line reports for idle cpusChris Metcalf1-0/+1
When doing an nmi backtrace of many cores, most of which are idle, the output is a little overwhelming and very uninformative. Suppress messages for cpus that are idling when they are interrupted and just emit one line, "NMI backtrace for N skipped: idling at pc 0xNNN". We do this by grouping all the cpuidle code together into a new .cpuidle.text section, and then checking the address of the interrupted PC to see if it lies within that section. This commit suitably tags x86 and tile idle routines, and only adds in the minimal framework for other architectures. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/linusw/linux-gpio Pull GPIO updates from Linus Walleij: "This is the bulk of GPIO changes for the v4.9 series: Subsystem improvements: - do away with the last users of the obsolete Kconfig options ARCH_REQUIRE_GPIOLIB and ARCH_WANT_OPTIONAL_GPIOLIB (the latter always sounded like an item on a wishlist to Santa Claus to me). We can now select GPIOLIB and be done with it, for all archs. After some struggle it even work on UM. Not that it has GPIO, but if it wants to, it can select the library. - continued efforts to make drivers properly either tristate or bool. - introduce a warning for drivers assigning default triggers to their irqchip lines when probed from device tree, so we find and fix these ambigous drivers. It is agreed that in the OF config path, the device tree defines trigger characteristics. - the same warning, mutatis mutandis, for ACPI-probed GPIO irqchips. - we introduce the ability to mark certain IRQ lines as "unusable" as they can be taken by BIOS/firmware, unrouted in silicon and generally nasty if you use them, and such things. This is put to good use in the STMPE driver and also in the Cherryview pin control driver. - a new "mockup" virtual GPIO device that can be used for testing. The plan is to add unit tests under tools/* for exercising this device and verify that the kernel code paths are working as they should. - make memory-mapped I/O-drivers depend on HAS_IOMEM. This was implicit all the time, but when people started building UM with allyesconfig or allmodconfig it exploded in their face. - move some stray bits of device tree and ACPI HW description callbacks down into their respective implementation silo. These were causing issues when compiling on !HAS_IOMEM as well, so now eventually UM compiles the GPIOLIB library if it wants to. New drivers: - new driver for the Aspeed GPIO front-end companion to the pin controller merged through the pin control tree. - new driver for the LP873x PMIC GPIO portions. - new driver for Technologic Systems' I2C FPGA GPIO such as TS4900, TS-7970, TS-7990 and TS-4100. - new driver for the Broadcom BCM63xx series including BCM6338 and BCM6345. - new driver for the Intel WhiskeyCove PMIC GPIO. - new driver for the Allwinner AXP209 PMIC GPIO portions. - new driver for Diamond Systems 48 line GPIO-MM, another of these port-mapped I/O expansion cards. - support the STMicroelectronics STMPE1600 variant in the STMPE driver. Driver improvements: - the STMPE driver now supports rising/falling edge detection properly for IRQs. - the PCA954x will now fetch and enable its VCC regulator properly. - major rework of the PCA953x driver with the goal of eventually switching it over to use regmap and thus modernize it even more. - switch the IOP driver to use the generic MMIO GPIO library. - move the ages old HTC EGPIO (extended GPIO) GPIO expander driver over to this subsystem from MFD, achieveing some separation of concerns" * tag 'gpio-v4.9-1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/linusw/linux-gpio: (81 commits) gpio: add missing static inline gpio: OF: localize some gpiochip init functions gpio: acpi: separation of concerns gpio: OF: separation of concerns gpio: make memory-mapped drivers depend on HAS_IOMEM gpio: stmpe: use BIT() macro gpio: stmpe: forbid unused lines to be mapped as IRQs mfd/gpio: Move HTC GPIO driver to GPIO subsystem gpio: MAINTAINERS: Add an entry for GPIO mockup driver gpio/mockup: add virtual gpio device gpio: Added zynq specific check for special pins on bank zero gpio: axp209: Implement get_direction gpio: aspeed: remove redundant return value check gpio: loongson1: remove redundant return value check ARM: omap2: fix missing include gpio: tc3589x: fix up complaints on unsigned gpio: tc3589x: add .get_direction() and small cleanup gpio: f7188x: use gpiochip_get_data instead of container_of gpio: tps65218: use devm_gpiochip_add_data() for gpio registration gpio: aspeed: fix return value check in aspeed_gpio_probe() ...

2016-08-31miscdevice: Add helper macro for misc device boilerplatePrasannaKumar Muralidharan1-12/+1
Many modules call misc_register and misc_deregister in its module init and exit methods without any additional code. This ends up being boilerplate. This patch adds helper macro module_misc_device(), that replaces module_init()/ module_exit() with template functions. This patch also converts drivers to use new macro. Change since v1: Add device.h include in miscdevice.h as module_driver macro was not available from other include files in some architectures. 2016-08-28net: smc91x: fix SMC accessesRussell King2-2/+4
Commit b70661c70830 ("net: smc91x: use run-time configuration on all ARM machines") broke some ARM platforms through several mistakes. Firstly, the access size must correspond to the following rule: (a) at least one of 16-bit or 8-bit access size must be supported (b) 32-bit accesses are optional, and may be enabled in addition to the above. Secondly, it provides no emulation of 16-bit accesses, instead blindly making 16-bit accesses even when the platform specifies that only 8-bit is supported. Reorganise smc91x.h so we can make use of the existing 16-bit access emulation already provided - if 16-bit accesses are supported, use 16-bit accesses directly, otherwise if 8-bit accesses are supported, use the provided 16-bit access emulation. If neither, BUG(). This exactly reflects the driver behaviour prior to the commit being fixed. Since the conversion incorrectly cut down the available access sizes on several platforms, we also need to go through every platform and fix up the overly-restrictive access size: Arnd assumed that if a platform can perform 32-bit, 16-bit and 8-bit accesses, then only a 32-bit access size needed to be specified - not so, all available access sizes must be specified. This likely fixes some performance regressions in doing this: if a platform does not support 8-bit accesses, 8-bit accesses have been emulated by performing a 16-bit read-modify-write access. Tested on the Intel Assabet/Neponset platform, which supports only 8-bit accesses, which was broken by the original commit. 2016-08-24ftrace: Add return address pointer to ftrace_ret_stackJosh Poimboeuf1-1/+1
Storing this value will help prevent unwinders from getting out of sync with the function graph tracer ret_stack. Now instead of needing a stateful iterator, they can compare the return address pointer to find the right ret_stack entry. Note that an array of 50 ftrace_ret_stack structs is allocated for every task. So when an arch implements this, it will add either 200 or 400 bytes of memory usage per task (depending on whether it's a 32-bit or 64-bit platform). 2016-08-04dma-mapping: use unsigned long for dma_attrsKrzysztof Kozlowski1-4/+4
The dma-mapping core and the implementations do not change the DMA attributes passed by pointer. Thus the pointer can point to const data. However the attributes do not have to be a bitfield. Instead unsigned long will do fine: 1. This is just simpler. Both in terms of reading the code and setting attributes. Instead of initializing local attributes on the stack and passing pointer to it to dma_set_attr(), just set the bits. 2. It brings safeness and checking for const correctness because the attributes are passed by value. Semantic patches for this change (at least most of them): virtual patch virtual context @r@ identifier f, attrs; @@ f(..., - struct dma_attrs *attrs + unsigned long attrs , ...) { ... } @@ identifier r.f; @@ f(..., - NULL + 0 ) and // Options: --all-includes virtual patch virtual context @r@ identifier f, attrs; type t; @@ t f(..., struct dma_attrs *attrs); @@ identifier r.f; @@ f(..., - NULL + 0 ) Link: http://lkml.kernel.org/r/1468399300-5399-2-git-send-email-k.kozlowski@samsung.com Signed-off-by: Krzysztof Kozlowski <k.kozlowski@samsung.com> Acked-by: Vineet Gupta <vgupta@synopsys.com> Acked-by: Robin Murphy <robin.murphy@arm.com> Acked-by: Hans-Christian Noren Egtvedt <egtvedt@samfundet.no> Acked-by: Mark Salter <msalter@redhat.com> [c6x] Acked-by: Jesper Nilsson <jesper.nilsson@axis.com> [cris] Acked-by: Daniel Vetter <daniel.vetter@ffwll.ch> [drm] Reviewed-by: Bart Van Assche <bart.vanassche@sandisk.com> Acked-by: Joerg Roedel <jroedel@suse.de> [iommu] Acked-by: Fabien Dessenne <fabien.dessenne@st.com> [bdisp] Reviewed-by: Marek Szyprowski <m.szyprowski@samsung.com> [vb2-core] Acked-by: David Vrabel <david.vrabel@citrix.com> [xen] Acked-by: Konrad Rzeszutek Wilk <konrad.wilk@oracle.com> [xen swiotlb] Acked-by: Joerg Roedel <jroedel@suse.de> [iommu] Acked-by: Richard Kuo <rkuo@codeaurora.org> [hexagon] Acked-by: Geert Uytterhoeven <geert@linux-m68k.org> [m68k] Acked-by: Gerald Schaefer <gerald.schaefer@de.ibm.com> [s390] Acked-by: Bjorn Andersson <bjorn.andersson@linaro.org> Acked-by: Hans-Christian Noren Egtvedt <egtvedt@samfundet.no> [avr32] Acked-by: Vineet Gupta <vgupta@synopsys.com> [arc] Acked-by: Robin Murphy <robin.murphy@arm.com> [arm64 and dma-iommu] Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>

This patch updates/fixes all spin_unlock_wait() implementations. The update is in semantics; where it previously was only a control dependency, we now upgrade to a full load-acquire to match the store-release from the spin_unlock() we waited on. This ensures that when spin_unlock_wait() returns, we're guaranteed to observe the full critical section we waited on. This fixes a number of spin_unlock_wait() users that (not unreasonably) rely on this. I also fixed a number of ticket lock versions to only wait on the current lock holder, instead of for a full unlock, as this is sufficient. Furthermore; again for ticket locks; I added an smp_rmb() in between the initial ticket load and the spin loop testing the current value because I could not convince myself the address dependency is sufficient, esp. if the loads are of different sizes. I'm more than happy to remove this smp_rmb() again if people are certain the address dependency does indeed work as expected. 2016-05-20printk/nmi: generic solution for safe printk in NMIPetr Mladek1-0/+1
printk() takes some locks and could not be used a safe way in NMI context. The chance of a deadlock is real especially when printing stacks from all CPUs. This particular problem has been addressed on x86 by the commit a9edc8809328 ("x86/nmi: Perform a safe NMI stack trace on all CPUs"). The patchset brings two big advantages. First, it makes the NMI backtraces safe on all architectures for free. Second, it makes all NMI messages almost safe on all architectures (the temporary buffer is limited. We still should keep the number of messages in NMI context at minimum). Note that there already are several messages printed in NMI context: WARN_ON(in_nmi()), BUG_ON(in_nmi()), anything being printed out from MCE handlers. These are not easy to avoid. This patch reuses most of the code and makes it generic. It is useful for all messages and architectures that support NMI. The alternative printk_func is set when entering and is reseted when leaving NMI context. It queues IRQ work to copy the messages into the main ring buffer in a safe context. __printk_nmi_flush() copies all available messages and reset the buffer. Then we could use a simple cmpxchg operations to get synchronized with writers. There is also used a spinlock to get synchronized with other flushers. We do not longer use seq_buf because it depends on external lock. It would be hard to make all supported operations safe for a lockless use. It would be confusing and error prone to make only some operations safe. The code is put into separate printk/nmi.c as suggested by Steven Rostedt. It needs a per-CPU buffer and is compiled only on architectures that call nmi_enter(). This is achieved by the new HAVE_NMI Kconfig flag. The are MN10300 and Xtensa architectures. We need to clean up NMI handling there first. Let's do it separately. The patch is heavily based on the draft from Peter Zijlstra, see https://lkml.org/lkml/2015/6/10/327 [arnd@arndb.de: printk-nmi: use %zu format string for size_t] [akpm@linux-foundation.org: min_t->min - all types are size_t here] Signed-off-by: Petr Mladek <pmladek@suse.com> Suggested-by: Peter Zijlstra <peterz@infradead.org> Suggested-by: Steven Rostedt <rostedt@goodmis.org> Cc: Jan Kara <jack@suse.cz> Acked-by: Russell King <rmk+kernel@arm.linux.org.uk> [arm part] Cc: Daniel Thompson <daniel.thompson@linaro.org> Cc: Jiri Kosina <jkosina@suse.com> Cc: Ingo Molnar <mingo@redhat.com> Cc: Thomas Gleixner <tglx@linutronix.de> Cc: Ralf Baechle <ralf@linux-mips.org> Cc: Benjamin Herrenschmidt <benh@kernel.crashing.org> Cc: Martin Schwidefsky <schwidefsky@de.ibm.com> Cc: David Miller <davem@davemloft.net> Cc: Daniel Thompson <daniel.thompson@linaro.org> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>

2016-03-25arch, ftrace: for KASAN put hard/soft IRQ entries into separate sectionsAlexander Potapenko1-0/+1
KASAN needs to know whether the allocation happens in an IRQ handler. This lets us strip everything below the IRQ entry point to reduce the number of unique stack traces needed to be stored. Move the definition of __irq_entry to <linux/interrupt.h> so that the users don't need to pull in <linux/ftrace.h>. Also introduce the __softirq_entry macro which is similar to __irq_entry, but puts the corresponding functions to the .softirqentry.text section. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/linusw/linux-gpio Pull GPIO updates from Linus Walleij: "This is the bulk of GPIO changes for kernel v4.6. There is quite a lot of interesting stuff going on. The patches to other subsystems and arch-wide are ACKed as far as possible, though I consider things like per-arch <asm/gpio.h> as essentially a part of the GPIO subsystem so it should not be needed. Core changes: - The gpio_chip is now a *real device*. Until now the gpio chips were just piggybacking the parent device or (gasp) floating in space outside of the device model. We now finally make GPIO chips devices. The gpio_chip will create a gpio_device which contains a struct device, and this gpio_device struct is kept private. Anything that needs to be kept private from the rest of the kernel will gradually be moved over to the gpio_device. - As a result of making the gpio_device a real device, we have added resource management, so devm_gpiochip_add_data() will cut down on overhead and reduce code lines. A huge slew of patches convert almost all drivers in the subsystem to use this. - Building on making the GPIO a real device, we add the first step of a new userspace ABI: the GPIO character device. We take small steps here, so we first add a pure *information* ABI and the tool "lsgpio" that will list all GPIO devices on the system and all lines on these devices. We can now discover GPIOs properly from userspace. We still have not come up with a way to actually *use* GPIOs from userspace. - To encourage people to use the character device for the future, we have it always-enabled when using GPIO. The old sysfs ABI is still opt-in (and can be used in parallel), but is marked as deprecated. We will keep it around for the foreseeable future, but it will not be extended to cover ever more use cases. Cleanup: - Bjorn Helgaas removed a whole slew of per-architecture <asm/gpio.h> includes. This dates back to when GPIO was an opt-in feature and no shared library even existed: just a header file with proper prototypes was provided and all semantics were up to the arch to implement. These patches make the GPIO chip even more a proper device and cleans out leftovers of the old in-kernel API here and there. Still some cruft is left but it's very little now. - There is still some clamping of return values for .get() going on, but we now return sane values in the vast majority of drivers and the errorpath is sanitized. Some patches for powerpc, blackfin and unicore still drop in. - We continue to switch the ARM, MIPS, blackfin, m68k local GPIO implementations to use gpiochip_add_data() and cut down on code lines. - MPC8xxx is converted to use the generic GPIO helpers. - ATH79 is converted to use the generic GPIO helpers. blackfin allmodconfig build fails with the error: ../sound/core/pcm_native.c: In function 'snd_pcm_lib_default_mmap': ../sound/core/pcm_native.c:3386:24: error: implicit declaration of function 'pgprot_writecombine' [-Werror=implicit-function-declaration] area->vm_page_prot = pgprot_writecombine(area->vm_page_prot); ^ ../sound/core/pcm_native.c:3386:22: error: incompatible types when assigning to type 'pgprot_t {aka struct <anonymous>}' from type 'int' area->vm_page_prot = pgprot_writecombine(area->vm_page_prot); ^ When !MMU, asm-generic will not define default pgprot_writecombine, so blackfin needs to define it by itself. 2016-03-13ipv4: Update parameters for csum_tcpudp_magic to their original typesAlexander Duyck1-2/+2
This patch updates all instances of csum_tcpudp_magic and csum_tcpudp_nofold to reflect the types that are usually used as the source inputs. For example the protocol field is populated based on nexthdr which is actually an unsigned 8 bit value. The length is usually populated based on skb->len which is an unsigned integer. This addresses an issue in which the IPv6 function csum_ipv6_magic was generating a checksum using the full 32b of skb->len while csum_tcpudp_magic was only using the lower 16 bits. As a result we could run into issues when attempting to adjust the checksum as there was no protocol agnostic way to update it. With this change the value is still truncated as many architectures use "(len + proto) << 8", however this truncation only occurs for values greater than 16776960 in length and as such is unlikely to occur as we stop the inner headers at ~64K in size. I did have to make a few minor changes in the arm, mn10300, nios2, and score versions of the function in order to support these changes as they were either using things such as an OR to combine the protocol and length, or were using ntohs to convert the length which would have truncated the value. I also updated a few spots in terms of whitespace and type differences for the addresses. Most of this was just to make sure all of the definitions were in sync going forward. 2016-03-08PCI: Include pci/hotplug Kconfig directly from pci/KconfigBjorn Helgaas1-2/+0
Include pci/hotplug/Kconfig directly from pci/Kconfig, so arches don't have to source both pci/Kconfig and pci/hotplug/Kconfig. Note that this effectively adds pci/hotplug/Kconfig to the following arches, because they already sourced drivers/pci/Kconfig but they previously did not source drivers/pci/hotplug/Kconfig: alpha arm avr32 frv m68k microblaze mn10300 sparc unicore32 Inspired-by-patch-from: Bogicevic Sasa <brutallesale@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Bjorn Helgaas <bhelgaas@google.com>

2016-03-07PCI: Move pci_dma_* helpers to common codeChristoph Hellwig1-1/+0
For a long time all architectures implement the pci_dma_* functions using the generic DMA API, and they all use the same header to do so. Move this header, pci-dma-compat.h, to include/linux and include it from the generic pci.h instead of having each arch duplicate this include. 2016-03-01arch/hotplug: Call into idle with a proper stateThomas Gleixner1-1/+1
Let the non boot cpus call into idle with the corresponding hotplug state, so the hotplug core can handle the further bringup. That's a first step to convert the boot side of the hotplugged cpus to do all the synchronization with the other side through the state machine. For now it'll only start the hotplug thread and kick the full bringup of the cpu. 2016-02-16gpio: Include linux/gpio.h instead of asm/gpio.hBjorn Helgaas8-8/+8
Most arches have an asm/gpio.h that merely includes linux/gpio.h. The others select ARCH_HAVE_CUSTOM_GPIO_H, and when that's selected, linux/gpio.h includes asm/gpio.h. Therefore, code should include linux/gpio.h instead of including asm/gpio.h directly. Remove includes of asm/gpio.h, adding an include of linux/gpio.h when necessary. Pull MTD updates from Brian Norris: "Generic MTD: - populate the MTD device 'of_node' field (and get a proper 'of_node' symlink in sysfs) This yielded some new helper functions, and changes across a variety of drivers - partitioning cleanups, to prepare for better device-tree based partitioning in the future Eliminate a lot of boilerplate for drivers that want to use OF-based partition parsing The DT bindings for this didn't settle yet, so most non-cleanup portions are deferred for a future release NAND: - embed a struct mtd_info inside struct nand_chip This is really long overdue; too many drivers have to do the same silly boilerplate to allocate and link up two "independent" structs, when in fact, everyone is assuming there is an exact 1:1 relationship between a NAND chips struct and its underlying MTD. This aids improved helpers and should make certain abstractions easier in the future. Also causes a lot of churn, helped along by some automated code transformations - add more core support for detecting (and "correcting") bitflips in erased pages; requires opt-in by drivers, but at least we kill a few bad implementations and hopefully stave off future ones - pxa3xx_nand: cleanups, a few fixes, and PM improvements - new JZ4780 NAND driver SPI NOR: - provide default erase function, for controllers that just want to send the SECTOR_ERASE command directly - fix some module auto-loading issues with device tree ("jedec,spi-nor") - error handling fixes - new Mediatek QSPI flash driver Other: - cfi: force valid geometry Kconfig (finally!)
