2016-02-22ARM: 8543/1: decompressor: rename suffix_y to compress-yMasahiro Yamada1-6/+6
The "$(suffix_y)" no longer appears in the file names, but it just specifies the method of the file compression. The "compress-y" sounds more suitable. Signed-off-by: Masahiro Yamada <yamada.masahiro@socionext.com> Signed-off-by: Russell King <rmk+kernel@arm.linux.org.uk>
2016-02-22ARM: 8542/1: decompressor: merge piggy.*.S and simplify MakefileMasahiro Yamada7-38/+8
The files piggy.$(suffix).S are similar enough to be merged into a single file. This also allows clean up of the Makefile. Signed-off-by: Masahiro Yamada <yamada.masahiro@socionext.com> Signed-off-by: Russell King <rmk+kernel@arm.linux.org.uk>
2016-02-22ARM: 8541/1: decompressor: drop redundant FORCE in MakefileMasahiro Yamada1-1/+1
The object "piggy.$(suffix_y).o" is created from "piggy.$(suffix).S" by the following pattern rule defined in scripts/Makefile.build: $(obj)/%.o: $(src)/%.S FORCE $(call if_changed_dep,as_o_S) FORCE is already added to the prerequisite of the object there. Signed-off-by: Masahiro Yamada <yamada.masahiro@socionext.com> Signed-off-by: Russell King <rmk+kernel@arm.linux.org.uk>
2016-02-22ARM: 8540/1: decompressor: use clean-files instead of extra-y to clean filesMasahiro Yamada1-2/+1
This code works fine here, but it is tricky to use "extra-y" for specifying files to be removed during "make clean". Kbuild provides "clean-files" for this purpose. Signed-off-by: Masahiro Yamada <yamada.masahiro@socionext.com> Signed-off-by: Russell King <rmk+kernel@arm.linux.org.uk>
2016-02-22ARM: 8539/1: decompressor: drop more unneeded assignments to "targets"Masahiro Yamada1-1/+1
The objects "font.o" and "misc.o" are contained in $(OBJS), and it is already added to the "targets". Signed-off-by: Masahiro Yamada <yamada.masahiro@socionext.com> Signed-off-by: Russell King <rmk+kernel@arm.linux.org.uk>
2016-02-22ARM: 8538/1: decompressor: drop unneeded assignments to "targets"Masahiro Yamada1-2/+2
The "targets" exists to specify which files need the corresponding ".*_cmd" files to be included during the build. In other words, it is used for files that need to detect the change of the command line by if_changed, if_changed_dep, and if_changed_rule. While, these files are just copied by "$(call cmd, shipped)". Adding them to the "targets" is meaningless because $(call cmd,...) never creates ".*_cmd" files. Such files as ".lib1funcs.S.cmd", ".ashldi3.S.cmd" do not exist in the first place. 2016-02-22ARM: 8534/1: virt: fix hyp-stub build for pre-ARMv7 CPUsJean-Philippe Brucker1-0/+2
ARMv6 CPUs do not have virtualisation extensions, but hyp-stub.S is still included into the image to keep it generic. In order to use ARMv7 instructions during HYP initialisation, add -march=armv7-a flag to hyp-stub's build. On an ARMv6 CPU, __hyp_stub_install returns as soon as it detects that the mode isn't HYP, so we will never reach those instructions. Signed-off-by: Jean-Philippe Brucker <jean-philippe.brucker@arm.com> Signed-off-by: Russell King <rmk+kernel@arm.linux.org.uk>

2016-01-26ARM: 8500/1: fix atags_to_fdt with stack-protector-strongKees Cook1-0/+9
Building with CONFIG_CC_STACKPROTECTOR_STRONG triggers protection code generation under CONFIG_ARM_ATAG_DTB_COMPAT but this is too early for being able to use any of the stack_chk code. Explicitly disable it for only the atags_to_fdt bits. 2015-12-14ARM: add UEFI stub supportRoy Franz4-3/+192
This patch adds EFI stub support for the ARM Linux kernel. The EFI stub operates similarly to the x86 and arm64 stubs: it is a shim between the EFI firmware and the normal zImage entry point, and sets up the environment that the zImage is expecting. This includes optionally loading the initrd and device tree from the system partition based on the kernel command line. We could hit this problem with crashkernel booting that uses kexec loading kernel above 4GiB. 2015-05-08ARM: replace BSYM() with badr assembly macroRussell King1-2/+2
BSYM() was invented to allow us to work around a problem with the assembler, where local symbols resolved by the assembler for the 'adr' instruction did not take account of their ISA. Since we don't want BSYM() used elsewhere, replace BSYM() with a new macro 'badr', which is like the 'adr' pseudo-op, but with the BSYM() mechanics integrated into it. This ensures that the BSYM()-ification is only used in conjunction with 'adr'. 2015-01-29ARM: 8294/1: ATAG_DTB_COMPAT: remove the DT workspace's hardcoded 64KB sizeNicolas Pitre1-9/+30
There is currently a hardcoded limit of 64KB for the DTB to live in and be extended with ATAG info. Some DTBs have outgrown that limit: $ du -b arch/arm/boot/dts/omap3-n900.dtb 70212 arch/arm/boot/dts/omap3-n900.dtb Furthermore, the actual size passed to atags_to_fdt() included the stack size which is obviously wrong. The initial DTB size is known, so use it to size the allocated workspace with a 50% growth assumption and relocate the temporary stack above that. This is also clamped to 32KB min / 1MB max for robustness against bad DTB data. 2014-11-13ARM: 8191/1: decompressor: ensure I-side picks up relocated codeWill Deacon1-4/+16
To speed up decompression, the decompressor sets up a flat, cacheable mapping of memory. However, when there is insufficient space to hold the page tables for this mapping, we don't bother to enable the caches and subsequently skip all the cache maintenance hooks. Skipping the cache maintenance before jumping to the relocated code allows the processor to predict the branch and populate the I-cache with stale data before the relocation loop has completed (since a bootloader may have SCTLR.I set, which permits normal, cacheable instruction fetches regardless of SCTLR.M). This patch moves the cache maintenance check into the maintenance routines themselves, allowing the v6/v7 versions to invalidate the I-cache regardless of the MMU state. 2014-07-18ARM: 8079/1: zImage: identify kernel endiannessNicolas Pitre1-0/+1
With patch #8067/1 ("zImage: ensure header in LE format for BE8 kernels") applied, it is no longer possible to determine the endianness of a compiled kernel image. This normally shouldn't matter to the boot environment, except for those cases where the selection of a ramdisk or root filesystem with a matching endianness has to be automated. Let's add a flag to the zImage header indicating the actual endianness. Four bytes from offset 0x30 can be interpreted as follows: 04 03 02 01 big endian kernel 01 02 03 04 little endian kernel Anything else should be interpreted as "unknown", in which case it is most likely that patch #8067/1 was not applied either and the zImage magic number at offset 0x24 could be used instead to determine endianness. No zImage before this patch ever produced 0x01020304 nor 0x04030201 at offset 0x30 so there is no confusion possible. Pull ARM updates from Russell King: - Major clean-up of the L2 cache support code. The existing mess was becoming rather unmaintainable through all the additions that others have done over time. Commit 017f161a55b4 (ARM: 7877/1: use built-in byte swap function) added bswapsdi2.{o,S} to arch/arm/boot/compressed/Makefile, but didn't update the .gitignore. Thus after a a build git status shows bswapsdi2.S as a new file, which is a little annoying. 2013-12-20stackprotector: Introduce CONFIG_CC_STACKPROTECTOR_STRONGKees Cook1-0/+14
This changes the stack protector config option into a choice of "None", "Regular", and "Strong": CONFIG_CC_STACKPROTECTOR_NONE CONFIG_CC_STACKPROTECTOR_REGULAR CONFIG_CC_STACKPROTECTOR_STRONG "Regular" means the old CONFIG_CC_STACKPROTECTOR=y option. "Strong" is a new mode introduced by this patch. With "Strong" the kernel is built with -fstack-protector-strong (available in gcc 4.9 and later). This option increases the coverage of the stack protector without the heavy performance hit of -fstack-protector-all. For reference, the stack protector options available in gcc are: -fstack-protector-all: Adds the stack-canary saving prefix and stack-canary checking suffix to _all_ function entry and exit. Results in substantial use of stack space for saving the canary for deep stack users (e.g. historically xfs), and measurable (though shockingly still low) performance hit due to all the saving/checking. Really not suitable for sane systems, and was entirely removed as an option from the kernel many years ago. -fstack-protector: Adds the canary save/check to functions that define an 8 (--param=ssp-buffer-size=N, N=8 by default) or more byte local char array. Traditionally, stack overflows happened with string-based manipulations, so this was a way to find those functions. Very few total functions actually get the canary; no measurable performance or size overhead. -fstack-protector-strong Adds the canary for a wider set of functions, since it's not just those with strings that have ultimately been vulnerable to stack-busting. With this superset, more functions end up with a canary, but it still remains small compared to all functions with only a small change in performance. Based on the original design document, a function gets the canary when it contains any of: - local variable's address used as part of the right hand side of an assignment or function argument - local variable is an array (or union containing an array), regardless of array type or length - uses register local variables https://docs.google.com/a/google.com/document/d/1xXBH6rRZue4f296vGt9YQcuLVQHeE516stHwt8M9xyU Find below a comparison of "size" and "objdump" output when built with gcc-4.9 in three configurations: - defconfig 11430641 kernel text size 36110 function bodies - defconfig + CONFIG_CC_STACKPROTECTOR_REGULAR 11468490 kernel text size (+0.33%) 1015 of 36110 functions are stack-protected (2.81%) - defconfig + CONFIG_CC_STACKPROTECTOR_STRONG via this patch 11692790 kernel text size (+2.24%) 7401 of 36110 functions are stack-protected (20.5%) With -strong, ARM's compressed boot code now triggers stack protection, so a static guard was added. Since this is only used during decompression and was never used before, the exposure here is very small. Once it switches to the full kernel, the stack guard is back to normal. Chrome OS has been using -fstack-protector-strong for its kernel builds for the last 8 months with no problems. 2013-12-10ARM: Rename ARCH_SHMOBILE to ARCH_SHMOBILE_LEGACYLaurent Pinchart1-1/+1
SH-Mobile platforms are transitioning from non-multiplatform to multiplatform kernel. A new ARCH_SHMOBILE_MULTI configuration symbol has been created to group all multiplatform-enabled SH-Mobile SoCs. The existing ARCH_SHMOBILE configuration symbol groups SoCs that haven't been converted yet. This arrangement works fine for the arch/ code, but lots of drivers needed on both ARCH_SHMOBILE and ARCH_SHMOBILE_MULTI depend on ARCH_SHMOBILE only. In order to avoid changing them, rename ARCH_SHMOBILE to ARCH_SHMOBILE_LEGACY, and create a new boolean ARCH_SHMOBILE configuration symbol that is selected by both ARCH_SHMOBILE_LEGACY and ARCH_SHMOBILE_MULTI. Perf updates from Will Deacon 5. Additional prefetching and other performance improvements from Will. 6. Neon-optimised AES implementation fro Ard. 7. A number of smaller fixes scattered around the place. There is a rather horrid merge conflict in tools/perf - I was never notified of the conflict because it originally occurred between Will's tree and other stuff. Consequently I have a resolution which Will forwarded me, which I'll forward on immediately after sending this mail. The other notable thing is I'm expecting some build breakage in the crypto stuff on ARM only with Ard's AES patches. These were merged into a stable git branch which others had already pulled, so there's little I can do about this. The problem is caused because these patches have a dependency on some code in the crypto git tree - I tried requesting a branch I can pull to resolve these, and all I got each time from the crypto people was "we'll revert our patches then" which would only make things worse since I still don't have the dependent patches. I've no idea what's going on there or how to resolve that, and since I can't split these patches from the rest of this pull request, I'm rather stuck with pushing this as-is or reverting Ard's patches. Since it should "come out in the wash" I've left them in - the only build problems they seem to cause at the moment are with randconfigs, and since it's a new feature anyway. However, if by -rc1 the dependencies aren't in, I think it'd be best to revert Ard's patches" I resolved the perf conflict roughly as per the patch sent by Russell, but there may be some differences. The Shark machine sub-architecture (also known as DNARD, the DIGITAL Network Appliance Reference Design) lacks a maintainer able to apply and test patches to modernize the architecture. It is suspected that the current kernel, while it compiles, does not even boot on this machine. The listed maintainer has expressed that he will not be able to spend any time on the maintenance for the coming year. So let's delete it from the kernel for now.
